Budget midfielder Burke starts up front for Sheffield United in Leeds derby clash

FPL midfielder Oliver Burke (£4.5m) earns a second consecutive out-of-position start for Sheffield United in Sunday afternoon’s Yorkshire derby.

The Blades’ new signing keeps £5.9m men Billy Sharp and Oli McBurnie on Chris Wilder’s bench.

John Fleck (£5.9m) – who has a slight knock – and Oliver Norwood (£4.9m) are also among the substitutes, while Jack O’Connell (£5.0m) is a notable absentee from the matchday squad.

On O’Connell’s injury, Wilder told BT Sport:

Really bad news from our point of view. Jack’s possibly going to be out for the season.

He needs an operation on a knee that he injured last year.

With O’Connell sidelined, Jack Robinson (£4.4m) lines up alongside loanee Ethan Ampadu (£4.5m), who is deputising in the heart of the Blades’ defence for the suspended John Egan (£4.9m). Robinson could now be set for an extended run of games in Wilder’s back-three system.

The visitors make one enforced change from their 4-3 win against Fulham in Gameweek 2.

Tyler Roberts (£5.0m) replaces the injured Pablo Hernandez (£5.9m) in midfield.

Forward Rodrigo (£5.9m) did come into the Leeds XI in GW2 after Hernandez pulled up in the pre-match warm-up, though Marcelo Bielsa signalled that Roberts could be favoured in his press conference ahead of Gameweek 3.

The Leeds United boss also put a two-week timescale on Hernandez’ return.

FPL bosses who have invested in players such as Patrick Bamford (£5.7m), Mateusz Klich (£5.6m) and Helder Costa (£5.6m) will be hoping Leeds’ goalscoring exploits can continue against a makeshift Blades defence.

New defensive signing Diego Llorente (£4.5m) is not part of the Leeds squad after joining on Thursday.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; Robinson, Ampadu, Basham; Stevens, Osborn, Berge, Lundstram, Baldock; McGoldrick, Burke.

Leeds United XI (4-1-4-1): Meslier; Dallas, Cooper, Koch, Ayling; Phillips; Harrison, Roberts, Klich, Costa; Bamford.

    An opinion piece 🙂

Such an echo chamber FFS and Twitter have become. There are so many voices that it is inevitable the herd flock to the FPL haut monde for guidance, and we get decisions such as starting the season Salah-less; Werner(c), despite not having scored a goal in the premier league; and the curious case of Podence. Even Daniel himself must be wondering why he was trending last week.

The Podence ascendence is an interesting one. Signed by Wolves in January last season, he mustered just 25 points over 285 minutes. So why was he everyone's priority transfer leading up to GW3?

When scouting for new players to replace our failed punts, it's fair to say we search by budget then, depending on the type of manager you are, fixtures or form. Following the Sheff Utd and Man City performances, Wolves ticked both fixtures and form. We also had the backdrop of Diego Jota moving to Liverpool, and Neto and Podence suddenly looked like underpriced bargains.

What has been overlooked in the scramble for Podence, is that the FPL grandmasters advocating him were not on their wildcard. They had Saint-Maximin to move on, and so were restricted to shopping in the 5.5m price range. Consider the Samedo signing this week and Traore moving to RW and the picture doesn't look quite as rosy.

Look, I'm not here to preach or be Captain Hindsight about it. Just pointing out that we should all consider the context in which pro pundits are bringing in the player they are. If their budget was 6.5m perhaps they'd have advocated Foden or Traore, and at 7m, Harvey Barnes? Listen to their advice but apply your own critical thinking and circumstances.

Podence was so popular for two reasons....

      1) He's looked very threatening in the games he's played so far.
      2) He's 5.5mil (well, 5.6 now)

No herd mentality from my part. Just those two reasons!

I missed that Gink, great post. It's difficult isn't it? I mean pages move so quickly that the crux of your question becomes an A/B comparison. If we had a thread based forum then we could have separate areas discussing the merits of each player - exactly like club fan forum sites do.

Thank you for reposting that comment. I for one always think of the "A or B" question as a question about the rest of the season - a question about a player's potential for consistent minutes and being put in positions that lend to a player being more productive (attacking positions, being on set pieces, penalties).

Especially at a salary slot of 5.5 midfielder, I don't think it would be a really productive use of transfers rearranging those particular deck chairs . . . I'd be more inclined to think about that slot as being for someone who I had reason to think would be good long term. At that price point I'd be more likely to be locked in barring an injury at another club that ended up giving another player an opportunity to step up (Todd Cantwell last season).

but you're definitely right that a lot of the questions here lack the appropriate context to allow for interested parties to provide the most helpful perspective possible.

I agree about echo chambers being dangerous to good decision-making. I'm wary of them. I like to poke my head in each one to get a feel for what's going on, and then come to my own decision using all the information.

Podence was a really tough decision, high risk high reward. But I decided he was worth a punt. Nuno was praising his performance, which is a very good sign. He's playing up front and has tremendous fixtures. Worse case, I gain a couple of price rises, and 5.5m of my budget gets wasted in the short-term. The injury rumours are a concern though...

I considered him, of course I did, but if I was to double up it would be on Wolves defence - Samedo comes in at the same price as Podence and is a nailed on wingback. There was that, and also preferring Foden and James Rodriguez on a wildcard.

Wolves’ fixtures scream goals to me, not clean sheets. Most of the teams they’re facing in this good run are teams that concede a lot, Palace being the exception. Hence why I doubled up in attack and only one defender.

fair point. I love a wingback and the double up with Saiss looks a strong move given his goal threat so far.

The concept of punts is poorly understood here. Its ok to have some high risk high reward players in your team, but recognise what you are doing.

Podence vs Zaha is not a fair comparison out of context as one has a much lower ceiling and lower floor. It all depends on the rest of the team and strategy.

Podence was never a thought for me, I have Grealish in my team. He takes the stupidity/punt/inspired spot in my team.

Players like Podence though could become a key centre-piece to our seasons. So many times in the past I've missed out on a 1.0m worth of rises because I stubbornly thought he was too risky and he turned out to be owned by everyone in the 2nd half of the season.

Trying to be more aggressive this season. Jumping on these sorts of players, and if it fails, fine, I can jump off. But missing out these players is more costly than them failing imo, because of the permeant rises...

i liked Podence, and he was in my draft for about 24 hours before i decided that

        1) Foden was superior, both in absolute and value-adjusted terms; and
        2) I preferred double defence, rather than double wolves attack.
        3) if im fishing down at that price point then i prefer soucek (indeed i'll forecast that podence to soucek in around wk8 looks like the move the pundits will do)

It was a difficult decision, if there were a 6th mid slot he'd probably be in it.

and btw, why are they PRO-pundits? that implies they are getting paid and do it as a full time job?

Whilst I agree with what you're saying in general and I know that this isn't your main point, the Werner part is very hindsighted.

He had a crazy good record in Bundesliga and they're playing West Brom who don't acknowledge that there is defence, even an out of sorts Chelsea can score against them (and they did thrice to be fair). He hit the crossbar and almost had an assist, it would have been a very different story. Form starts somewhere innit?

My point is really around the captaincy. It's a win-or-bust mentality where if it doesn't come off, you're emotionally invested in (rage) transferring him out for someone you can trust with captaincy. For those with KdB, Sterling or Salah(c), I bet they're more inclined to keep Werner and see if he comes good vs Palace and Southampton.

He’s looked good in both of his games and has an assist to boot. He has a nice run of fixtures. A 5.5 punt isn’t exactly the end of the world 3 weeks in is it?

Absolutely not. But take a look on the last page and there's someone saying their season is over because of the Podence rumours!

I'm trying to get people to think why Podence was at the forefront of their minds to transfer in. Particularly if you were on a wildcard.

Isn't Podence the frontrunner to take Jota's minutes now that Jota has moved on the Liverpool?

It's nice that he's looked good in limited minutes and it's a slight cause of concern that the rumorsphere claims he's carrying an injury, but I'd argue that it's more important to focus on the potential that he's going to be getting consistent minutes in an attacking position playing for a credible attacking side.

My Google skills haven't found any information on Podence, but thinking long-term he looks like a good option at 5.5. to me for the reasons I've articulated above. What I've learned in playing 30+ years of fantasy sports is that one needs to become a little bit blind to things in the short term (avoid knee-jerk reactions) and that the key to success in fantasy sports is to identify players who get consistent playing time and are put in positions to score fantasy points (baseball players hitting near the top of the lineup, for example).

If you spent 104 minutes yesterday thinking that Bruno looked like garbage and now you want to bring him in because he converted a penalty, you're missing the point in both directions.

I don't think he's a great option following the Samedo signing, no. Podence and Neto are largely competing for the same spot if you accept Traore is more likely in the RW spot.

Everyone would have Armstrong @5.5m if he wasn't out GW1, but he's back now, had a price drop and is looking lively.

I'm feeling like I saw a lot more of Neto on the right last season, and I definitely remember avoiding Traore over inconsistent playing time last season.

My current resident of that low-budgetish midfielder position is Phil Foden. If he get 2000 minutes in that offense then he's a gem at 6.5.

            • 14 Years

Agree totally - at 6.5m if there's a period where it looks like Foden is more likely to start than not, then he's effectively an 8m priced player based on his PPG.

and of course the question is how much of David Silva moving on turns into "Foden is more likely to start than not". Pep was really clear down the stretch last season that the club wasn't going to buy a replacement for Dilva because they already had the replacement in Foden. I'm thinking that 2000 minutes is a conservative estimate.

Especially now with both Kun and Jesus out and probably pushing Sterling into the middle for a while, there's a giant hole on the left attacking side of the formation with Foden's name on it.

comparing him to Foden is unfair as 1m between them

Foden won't start every game either

Podence should start ahead of Neto based on performances, unless Santo favors Neto for some odd reason

Forget his price, and whatever the stats say (even though 25 points in 285 minutes is good imo), he looks very good when he plays, has two assists in two games, and the Wolves fans reckon he'll be one of their greatest ever players.

Alright d1ckhead. Norwood talk them all last year. Berge was signed to replace Norwood not Lundstram. This is the result.

From what I watched of him last season, he genuinely looks like their best striker of the balls. Forwards aren't all up to scratch.

Not sure if that translates to set pieces, but still.

Imagine if he had these duties whilst he was a 4.0 DEF last year. My god...

And now he'll never be classed as a defender again 🙁

I'd like to apologise for the incoming Leeds clean sheet. I got rid of Ayling on my wildcard along with McCarthy, Adams and Bruno among others, so he's going to haul!

Ah ffs.. I hate GWs like these, where sudden injuries pop up long after transfers and deadlines are gone. Makes me hate FPL tbh. But out of my control now I guess.

Podence, Alisson(might make me regret taking Auba out for Kdb), Thiago and Kdb(maybe).

Meslier looking very good, which is odd considering how many they've conceded this season.

All this Brewster optimism but Bamford could well be the better cheap option.

Nobody doubted that, but Brewster is 1 mil cheaper so an option if he can be benched 75% of the time

I'm rotating Mes and McC. Have 12 points from McC and KWP on my bench - hoping for more from Mes and Ayling. Mes deserves a CS, 3 baps and save points.

      Tmworst possible pick

Leeds concede a lot and he has no attacking threat like the other leeds defs

Thanks folks. I understand he is an underwhelming pick but I wouldn’t be playing him. I was busy last night and didn’t activate my WC like planned. Lost value on Werner Martial on Wilson and missed rises on DCL and Jiminez so now I am falling short.
