Podence and Marcal absent as Vinagre is recalled and Semedo makes Wolves debut

The last of four Premier League matches to take place on Sunday sees West Ham United entertain Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Kick-off in east London is at 19:00 BST.

Daniel Podence (£5.6m) won’t play any part in this evening’s game, with the budget Fantasy Premier League midfielder not involved in the visitors’ matchday squad.

Unconfirmed rumours had circulated about his absence ahead of Saturday’s FPL deadline, with Podence not pictured in training ground images.

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo had reported that his squad were suffering from “some knocks” in his pre-match press conference on Friday but didn’t elaborate.

Santo confirmed that Podence that was one of those players ahead of kick-off, however.

Marcal (£5.0m) misses out as expected with a calf problem, meanwhile.

Replacing the injured pair are Ruben Vinagre (£4.4m) and Nelson Semedo (£5.5m), who makes his Wolves debut at right wing-back.

That allows Adama Traore (£6.5m) the opportunity to push forward into an advanced role alongside Raul Jimenez (£8.6m) and Pedro Neto (£5.5m).

Fabian Balbuena (£4.4m) comes in for Issa Diop (£4.5m) in West Ham’s only alteration to their starting XI.

Diop, along with Josh Cullen and manager David Moyes, is absent today after testing positive for COVID-19.

Mark Noble (£4.9m) returns from injury but is only among the substitutes.

West Ham United XI: Fabianski, Fredericks, Balbuena, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Masuaku, Bowen, Soucek, Rice, Fornals, Antonio.

Wolverhampton Wanderers XI: Patricio, Boly, Coady, Saiss, Semedo, Moutinho, Neves, Vinagre, Traore, Jimenez, Neto.

Were most on here aware of the handball rule change pre-season and the implications it may have?

If it was mentioned in articles on this website, I mustn’t have paid it any mind

We had a taster in lockdown, there was a lot of debate about screen monitors and then we’ll documented about rule changes and refs using monitors pre-season. Also champs league gave us a flavour

I don't think the implications were grasped. Refs went around all the clubs to explain in the pre-season but clearly it didn't sink in with them either.

It was mentioned a few times, should have paid more attention. Remembered comparisons to Serie A. This is insane though.

Yes but I apparently underestimated how literally the refs would apply the rule. I had a feeling it would cause more problems than it solved, but I don't think anyone could have anticipated it would be this bad.

No chance. Wanted Fernandes but couldn't afford him on WC because Trent. Castagne has been consistant last 3 games and extremely attacking - this year's Docherty imo

Seems like long ago, but from the lines they drew and showed us on screen, Andy Carrol looked offside but suddenly the decision was onside and that penalty was given. I didn't understand! Anyone noticed that too?

    1. The Ejiptian King
      • 5 Years

Carroll wasn't offside, someone else in the middle was and he didn't interfere with play, I had Doherty so I wish he was.

Anybody else think there needs to be an FPL rule change in terms of goals conceded equally minus points?

Man City defenders walk off pitch after conceding 5 but yet have 0 points. Surely should minus one for each goal.

Man City just an example (clearly)

-3 for missing a penalty but only 0 for conceding 5, doesn't make sense to me.

I'm sure others know what I mean.

You end the game with zero. You let 5 in.
You should get less then zero for such a performance.

Just to put a bit of perspective into all this doom and gloom, the start of a season is never a good time to chase clean sheets. Defences are still taking time to gel. Far better to play a back three of attack minded players. More so this season which is unlike any other. The hand ball rules means more penalties and there is a different feel to stadiums because of the pandemic. Once you accept that bad luck is more likely this season the game will be more enjoyable to play and risky punts decisions become easier to take.

Death by stats. You only use stats like xg in conjunction with fundamental observations. Vardy is the only striker in a competitive team with a track record of banging them in at this level for years. XG is based on 3 games! He’s basically fixture proof, takes pens... what more do you want?

I would add he's also consistently +xG delta, meaning he's a better than average finisher (Opposite of, say, Jesus, who consistently scores fewer goals than he should.)
