Pro Pundits - Tom

Who has created the most chances in FPL and why Solly March can be a budget gem

In his latest column, five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman discusses the players creating the most chances so far in 2020/21, a new Leicester City asset for the watchlist, Stuart Dallas and a Brighton differential.

Gameweek 3 has drawn to a close, and all in all, it’s been a pretty good one for me.

A total of 52 points has seen my overall rank rise to 453,222, and though it’s still early days, it’s been a positive start.

Mohamed Salah (£12.1m) led the way with 10 captain points but there were also returns for Alex McCarthy (£4.5m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Luke Ayling (£4.5m), Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) and Patrick Bamford (£5.8m), who has started well and exceeded expectations.

So, in this my latest article as part of the Pro Pundits initiative, I thought I’d touch upon a few things that have piqued my interest over the last few weeks.

I tend to make a lot of notes on a day-to-day basis and I suppose this is me downloading some of that information. If one or two of you can take something away from it, it’ll be worth it.

The Creators

Knowing the identity of each club’s most creative player, whether or not it’s from open play or set pieces, is something I like to keep note of. After just three Gameweeks, we’re still working with a small sample size and waiting for statistics to settle down, but in an attempt to pick up on any early trends, I thought I’d share it.

How do you feel about Everton?
Do you think they can keep this form and battle for top 4 this season... or the honeymoon is over after Brighton?

They have made some great signings for sure. I think they could comfortably finish 7th or 8th, perhaps even higher.

If they can keep Rodriguez fit... their depth isn't great but if they have a bit of luck with no injuries they look really capable of challenging Spurs United and Chelsea I could see 4-6 being really possible now.

Higher. I think the current Everton side are top 6 material. At least one of Spurs, ManUtd, Arsenal or Chelsea will implode and they clearly have the quality to make the CL. Them and Leicester.

I think it might be ManUtd. They have no reinforcements, shortened pre-season and a clueless board and manager. Arsenal will be fine I think, Chelsea need time but have too much talent to let slip. I also think 2nd season Mourinho will have some magic moments and will finish top 6 unless for some reason Kane and Son get injured for long periods.

Liverpool fan so might be biased but...

Can see that central defence/goalkeeper letting them down badly. Need consistency for T4 or even T6 these days and they'll concede far too many for that.

Started well though w/good signings so I could be proven wrong. Long old season though. Plenty of sides that started well end up fading and finishing 11th.

Podence starts with Neto which means Traore at RWB & no Semedo
Podence starts instead of Neto which means Semedo at RWB
Same starting 11 as whu with Semedo & Traore on the right

Home/away advantage looks like it has largely been erased this season.

So far, 18 of 28 premier league games have been won by the away side. Therefore choosing captains/players on the basis of fixtures should be focused more on the absolute strength of opponents.

For me, that means targeting clear relegation contenders like Fulham, West Brom, Burnley, West Ham(?), Newcastle and Sheffield United regardless of home/away advantage.

I think it might be useful as well to build a mock table to assess teams. Teams like Everton, Leeds, Brighton, Villa and Crystal Palace have impressed so far and therefore a lot of fixture tickers may have assessed the fixture difficulty incorrectly.

Meanwhile, teams like Southampton, Burnley, Sheffield United and even Chelsea have had disappointing starts and defensively, they look like they can be targeted. I know that Chelsea away for instance is no longer a really hard fixture. It might even be easier than Crystal Palace at home on current form, but you won't find a fixture ticket that says that.

      • 5 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

Love how the fixture ticker on here allows you to change the difficulty to what you feel is the current climate

Don't like that midfield, prefer something closer to Magnus Carlsen's (coincidentally I have the exact same midfield as him: Salah KDB Hamez Foden). He's got Werner and Mitrovic up front with DCL, so he wouldn't be able to afford both Jimenez and Ings, but could still get one of them plus a decent 6.5.

This is the classic troll manager comment where you think okay, so if he has a chance to make it for this week then surely he'll definitely be fit for the following game especially after an international break, and then he's not fit for that game either and you kept an expensive asset losing value for no reason

Maupay vs. Ings. Maupay wins on shots/ BCT and expected to score higher for next year. On a WC and Going for Maupay buys a lot elsewhere.

Prefer Ings, but the other 2 strikers you have mean you can have Maupay and reinvest in other areas.

If I was on a WC now I’d probably get Maupay as my 3rd striker to go with Ings and Jimi.

Miraculous recovery is on the cards. Son loves to play and is known to recover quickly. I think he might start...

Joking of course, i think he will be fit in 2 weeks.

Any chance of some input please following a bad week:
      McCarthy
      TAA Justin Lascelles Doherty (Mitchell)
Salah KDB Fernandes Podence (Oriol Romeu)
      Martial Mitro (Davies)
      1FT & 1.5 TSB

          Cheers.
          I was initially contemplating either
          1. Mitro - DCL
          2.Martial - Jimi

            1. DCL in form, so can't argue there. Although I can't bring myself to include him.
            2. I think Jimi is set and forget, one bad week makes people skip over what a class act Wolves are. Great fixtures too.

I know I'm not sure if I trust him either. My thoughts exactly with Jiminez.
Is there anything better you could recommend?

WC thoughts, trying to find some differentials:

      McCarthy
      Robbo - KWP - James
      KDB - Mane - Pereira - Barnes
      Kane - Jimi - Bamford

Bench - Nyland, Lamptey, Mitchel & Mendy
      ITB - £0.1m

Looks good but i think you'll pay the price going with Robba & Mane over TAA & Salah imo that's the weakness I can see its very risky

Agree on TAA vs. Robbo, but first 3 games have leant towards Robbo.
Mane vs. Salah, I think Mane is looking sharper, hungrier & better value. Missing the penalty opp, which is going crazy atm, but potentially bigger returns outside that.

          Cheers for the input.

I cant dispute either of your points. I feel Salah is the riskier one of the two to leave out like you said he is on pens and just seems that little bit "greedier" for goals for the minute price difference I think he is more than worth it with pens alone

        Decent enough

Don’t get holding McCarthy on WC in a Southampton double up. Burnley are a really poor attack to judge a defence on. Get Meslier or Dallas/Ayling.

Feel settled on my WC team as long as no injuries between now and deadline..

      Martinez,
      TAA,Saiss,Justin
      Zaha,Barnes,Salah, KDB,Soucek
      Richi, Jimi

      Steer, Brewster, Lamptey, Mitchell

2ITB - Spend now or wait as looking to swap Barnes for Son GW5 if he is back. Also hoping Brewster signs for Sheffield. Mourinho comments have me a little confused now if Son will be back or not.

Think Son could be out for a while longer than reported.
Zaha - trying to get that transfer atm, so going all out. Window closes, he goes back to not caring.
Soucek - WHM have horrible fixtures coming up...
        Richi vs. DCL thoughts?

      The new normal.

My 15 year old son wakes up ill. Got a constant hacking cough, said his morning probiotic drink tasted bland. Temperature under 37.5, but got two of the 3 symptoms so got to get him tested and stay at home.

Foolishly forget and send 13 year old daughter to school.

School rings up, you got to pick up your daughter and she has to stay home too until results of your son’s test is known.

Gone are the days when you could just send them to school and let the teachers send them home if they felt unwell!

That's tough to hear, how easy are you managing to get tests local to you?

When we had to test our daughter 2 weeks ago my wife had to do a 2 hour drive from Bristol to Builth Wells in mid Wales.

Luckily, I managed to get him one for this evening at Bristol Airport which is about 29 mins drive away.

It’s just kind of funny how it impacts all of us now as we can’t go out anywhere till we know his test result, which will probably be Friday night/ Saturday morning.

But absolutely agree that you have to test in those circumstances and we have to isolate until we know the result.

Absolutely, you've done the right thing but for some people doing the right things becomes harder when they have to travel so far just to get a test or suffer financial hardship as a result. The only way we are gonna progress through this is properly available and fast testing.

Hope you and your family are well.

              Thanks Miguel.

I'm OK. My daughter is miffed as she would rather be at school. My wife is at work, she works in isolation in an annexe all by herself, but she works part time so after today she's not due back in till next Thursday anyway.

My son definitely not feeling well and temperature rising. Poor chap.

My step mum developed a permeant lung condition as a result of covid. She's really suffering with it. The doctors say it's incurable 🙁

Shame some people treat this as a joke and don’t realise it really does affect some people, especially the elderly.
