Pro Pundits - Tom

Who has created the most chances in FPL and why Solly March can be a budget gem

In his latest column, five-time top 1k finisher Tom Freeman discusses the players creating the most chances so far in 2020/21, a new Leicester City asset for the watchlist, Stuart Dallas and a Brighton differential.

Gameweek 3 has drawn to a close, and all in all, it’s been a pretty good one for me.

A total of 52 points has seen my overall rank rise to 453,222, and though it’s still early days, it’s been a positive start.

Mohamed Salah (£12.1m) led the way with 10 captain points but there were also returns for Alex McCarthy (£4.5m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Luke Ayling (£4.5m), Tomas Soucek (£5.0m) and Patrick Bamford (£5.8m), who has started well and exceeded expectations.

So, in this my latest article as part of the Pro Pundits initiative, I thought I’d touch upon a few things that have piqued my interest over the last few weeks.

I tend to make a lot of notes on a day-to-day basis and I suppose this is me downloading some of that information. If one or two of you can take something away from it, it’ll be worth it.

The Creators

Knowing the identity of each club’s most creative player, whether or not it’s from open play or set pieces, is something I like to keep note of. After just three Gameweeks, we’re still working with a small sample size and waiting for statistics to settle down, but in an attempt to pick up on any early trends, I thought I’d share it.

Tarkowski and Mee are the preferred pair. Dunne is 4th choice, I think. Won't be playing much longer.

    Ok so I got this:

    Ryan, Button
    TAA, Justin, Dallas, Dunne, Ferguson
    Salah, Sterling, Son, JRod, Zaha
    Jimenez, Mitrović, Wickham

Would you do Son and Wickham to Barnes and DCL for -8? If not, what should I do? Maybe someone else like Foden? Is Barnes a better option than Maddison?

Barnes better than Maddison at the moment imo

      No to the -8

I would look to move on Son to Barnes only and play 3-5-2

he's gone from red flag back to 25% chance off the back of some comments made today/yesterday.

there was no obvious break down from him, so he may have caught it before it went. one to keep an eye on this week (i haven't taken him out yet, and won't be until i hear more).

Unbelievably... Yes. I'd say it's like 25-30% chance he'll start against MUN lol.

Son recovers quickly and is really eager to play. Jose really needs him even if he's not 100% fit. If he's cleared to play, he'll play.

Wolves are a good consistent reliable team. I am not sure there is any need to panic transfer them out after one bad week. I have both Jiminez and Podence and happy to keep them for at least the next two and I am not worried at all about Wolves not scoring or doing well defensively. They have the same core players. Their fixtures are amazing as well especially the next two.

surprised how many WCs this week don't have Vardy. He's already punished the doubters, and when he's hot he goes on long runs.

The doubters have good reason to doubt. 4 of his 5 big chances have been penalties. City literally gift wrapped him two PKs. He got nothing from open play in a 4-2 win at Burnley.

This rate of penalties is not sustainable.

        1. No Professionals

I was looking at him for GW4-9 or so initially but was put off by the fact his two goals against West Brom were penalties and he didn't have another shot on target, and in a game where they scored 4 against Burnley he was hardly involved. But he looked much sharper against City and won those penalties himself. Clumsiness from the City defence helped naturally but even without the goals he looks good right now.

Yeah, I kinda get that, but only the Liverpool guys have touched the ball more in the final third so far, which suggests it won't be too much of an issue? And he's a wing-back in a back three system too, which helps.

I do realise he's 5.0 tho, and not going to get returns too often.

Yeah, much prefer Lamptey at 0.5 cheaper and also gets points for CSs... Lamptey sometimes looks like he’s playing as a second striker with his central runs

Why is Lampard playing Werner out on the left wing and how long is that expected to continue for?

One of the best strikers in Europe when played down the centre.

Arteta doing likewise with Aubamayang. Can someone explain the 'theory' behind this for me?

Probably till Ziyech and Pulisic are back.

Probably due to the lack of quality wingers with speed combined with having somewhat decent strikers to start if Werner/Auba are deployed on the flank

Werner is not an out and out striker I believe. His biggest asset is his pace, which, presumably, could hurt opponents more from the wing as compared to the congested center.

Saiss though Justin's offensive potential appeals but I predict for West Ham to score

Dunno, statistically Wolves defence has been pretty poor so far (yeah, small sample I know, but still).

Fulham are dreadful, that's the main reason. Wolves can surely deal with their one tactic of "pass to Mitrovic" and I back them to come good over time.

    1 FT, 0.0 ITB
    Willing to take a hit!

Players I want : Ings, Maddison, Vardy, Periera

Probably going out : Werner, Jorginho, Son

Which combination would you prefer from the pool above??

Played my WC and was wondering:

    - Vardy orJimenez?
    - Is Rashford viable? I don't actually want to go for B.Silva as he may deliver but is not actually performing.

    B) Boly (FUL)
    C) Trossard (eve)

I've got a fair few eggs in not many baskets here...how does this look? Have 1.1 itb, and want to sure up my bench, or fix those under threat of rotation like Podence.

    Ryan
    TAA Robbo James Saiss
    Salah KDB Foden Podence
    Jimmy Ings

    Forster; Alzate, Mitchell, Davis

Team looks good, agree that bench would be where I'd be looking maybe Alzate -> Soucek

Yep, might be able to crawl to GW8 and get Soucek then. Also considering March per the article above, but not nearly as good an option as Soucek.

    Which combination on WC?

    A) Robbo + Pereira + Richarlison (3x LIV & 2x EVE)

    B) Saiss + Pereira + Vardy

    C) Castagne + Barnes + Ings (2x LEI)

Really like Robertson & Richarlison as picks, Richy on pens is huge.

I'd go Trossard personally but like Perreira too

Trossard and Pereira would both be in the team in that case. Would be Salah, KDB, Trossard & Pereira in MF.

            Thanks for the response!

      1-3

Laporte should be back for City, so I don't see them conceding a lot.

Not sure if surfaced here yesterday but, given all the excitement about penalty takers, two reports that refs will be urged to show more leniency from this weekend:

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/sep/29/premier-league-referees-to-be-more-lenient-on-handball-after-outcry

Basically: Ward and Lindelof would be overturned, Dier (and Maupay) would have stayed

Is not about Leniency is about using Common Sense!

In the past there was the difference ball to hand and hand to ball. All gone down the drain with modern football.

I am not expressing an opinion, merely saying this has an affect on the chance of penalties which may have FPL implications...

Yep, looks like it and thanks for sharing. Will be interesting as leniency is another subjective matter. But any kind of focus is better than it's been.

The current rule is fine with me. Every handball that is not fixed to the body should be given a penalty.

Very, though I don't have any need to make the move early. Semedo -> Dias at GW10 to exploit the fixture swing is currently on my mind. City CS record is excellent with Laporte. Only issue is it locks me out of triple City attack for that run, I'd like KDB + Aguero and another could be added.

Not really - still lots of competition there with Laporte, Ake, Garcia and Fernandinho

    McCarthy (Steer)
    TAA, Saiss, Davies, Justin (Mitchell)
    Salah, KDB, Son, Podence (Bissouma)
    Werner, Ings (Davis)

    (A) Son --> Mahrez (stick with 4-4-2)
    (B) Son, Davis --> Barnes, Maupay for a -4 (move to a 3-4-3)
