Pro Pundits - Zophar

The best strikers to buy, sell and hold based on FPL goal threat from open play

With so many goals already this season, it’s all about strikers in Fantasy Premier League – but which ones should we sell, keep or buy?

We have already witnessed 103 goals over the first 28 matches of the campaign, an average of 3.68 per game. To put that into perspective, the previous Premier League record across the course of a full season was an average of 2.82 goals per game.

With nets bulging up and down the country, it is natural to assume that the bulk of the goals will be scored by strikers and, with the new handball regulations leading to more penalties being awarded, it is only natural to favour front-men on spot kick duties.

The FPL Eye Test - Gameweek 3 3

For example, the following forwards take penalties for their respective clubs:

  1. Neal Maupay (£6.5m) – Brighton
  2. Chris Wood (£6.5m) – Burnley
  3. Richarlison (£8.0m) – Everton
  4. Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) – Fulham
  5. Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) – Leicester City
  6. Callum Wilson (£6.4m) – Newcastle
  7. Danny Ings (£8.4m) – Southampton
  8. Harry Kane (£10.5m) – Spurs
  9. Charlie Austin/Hal Robson-Kanu (£5.4m) – West Brom
  10. Michail Antonio (£6.4m) – West Ham
  11. Raul Jimenez (£8.6m) – Wolves

CHECK OUT THE FULL PENALTY TAKERS LIST HERE

That’s a pretty large share out of the 20 teams. So, while 3-5-2 has been gaining popularity over the last few years, the number of penalty takers available at budget prices in forward positions may very well help cement the classic 3-4-3 as the preferred formation.

But do we want to be investing in strikers who rely exclusively on penalties? While there could be merit in that approach, surely we want to investing those who offer plenty of threat from open play as well.

So, let’s have a look how the league’s strikers have done so far using the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

    Martinez
    Semedo - Saiss - James
    KDB - Foden - Havertz - Son*** - Salah
    Jimenez - DCL

    Button - Lamptey - Brewster - Mitchell

    1ft, 0.0m itb.

    A. Son to Harvey Barnes. Gives me 2m to do Saiss/Semedo to Robertson the following week.
Guess one Pool fullback is essential. Too good.

    OR

    B. Keep Son. Bench this week if he doesn't start because he's likely to be back after the IB with good fixtures.

    Thanks!

B for sure. Spurs hitting form at the right time before a good run of fixtures and son was never really gonna do anything away at man utd this week anyways

I’d do A. Missing some Pool defence myself and it feels a bit stupid not having any

Yes, needs a Pool fullback. How you do that is another issue entirely. I would downgrade Son and Barnes is a great potential pick.

Current team, with 1FT and 0,5 ITB.
    McCarthy (Steer)
    James, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, Taylor, Walker-Peters
    Salah, Sterling, Son (Saint-Maximin) (Reed)
    Adams, Werner (Davis)

    What to do?
    1) Son->Mahrez
    2) Son->Barnes
    3) Saint-Maximin->Podence/Soucek
    4) Hope either Son or Saint-Maximin plays and save transfer.

I am lowkey hoping that Lampard comes out with a "Werner is injured" statement on the presser so that it gives me the excuse to do Werner to Ings as my FT 😀

He's 7.5 now. Could have got him for 7.1 last week. When you think of it like that, it really makes you feel like you've missed the boat and therefore makes him easier to ignore. The law of FPL stubbornness (stupidity).

What are peoples thoughts on how Barkley will do at Villa? or are their better options in the price bracket. Team below. £0itb

    Martinez - Nyland

    Lamptey - Mitchell - Robertson - James - Dunn

    Salah - KDB - Bruno - Barkley - Stephens

    DCL - Vardy - Bamford

Do we think Saiss or Semedo are worth bringing in on a WC?

Wolves defense hasn't been great so far but the fixtures are excellent and you'd expect them to improve.

Same issue. The fixtures are too appealing. I got podence and jimi before price rises and now trying to work out how mad triple wolves is

      Definitely.

One poor game against WHU doesn't mean that they're a no go. Their fixtures are amazing. If they keep a clean sheet this week (and they're top of the clean sheet odds), watch people flock back to them again.

You'd be trolling yourself. United will still be a low-scoring team. For an extra 1.5 there are a range of options for far more reliable forwards.

They were a low scoring team with dreadful strikers. I'll give Brewster a few GWs to show what he's got but if he comes good then I've got no qualms about utilizing the strategy above.

Sure, if he goes all DCL over us I'll change my view, but I won't be rushing to drop Ings or Jimi for him.

I dunno. Compare him to the 4.5 midfielders and he’ll definitely out score them. Means a switch in team structure but a regularly starting main striker at 4.5 is too hard to resist

@Zophar Did you write this BBC article? https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54359583

Personally I see more value in the 442.

Even in this climate a defender is still better value than a striker. We have so many great attacking defenders across all price brackets.

The funds you save from going 442 are very useful with so many expensive players in the game... It allows you to really take advantage of good fixtures.

Do you really think 4-4-2 makes sense though given the real lack of clean sheets across the league this season?

I'm not entirely convinced. What makes you think it's best?

If you're going 4-4-2 with TAA and Robbo okay maybe I see the point, but that's not really a 4-4-2 because those Liverpool defenders are basically mids.

      1. Brosstan
        • 9 Years

As shown on black box last night there's really not a lower amount of clean sheets so far this season despite the amount of goals scored.

      2. Piggs Boson
        • 12 Years

It's not a trend I see continuing. It isn't uncommon to see lots of goals and few clean sheets in the first few weeks.

And yeah, of course that's still a 442. Yes they are like mids, so are a few of the other defenders. And many mids are like forwards. But that's the point.

with cheap forwards I prefer 3 up top and playing 4.5 / 5.0 mid of my bench rather than a non playing 4.5 attacker on my bench - covid means your subs may be called into use a bit more than normal as winter approaches

    3. Kindness

I think 4 4 2 could turn out to be the optimal formation as this is what I started with but definitely not at the moment with there being so many strikers doing well. You lose an attacking slot with a 4 4 2. Who apart from digne, castagne or the Liverpool guys are the great attacking defenders?

Given they play 2 different positions it might be helpful to mention who you're pairing them up with, e.g

        TAA+def1 or
        Son+mid1

I have a chance to upgrade Lascelles to TAA and he will be set and forget...but that means taking Son out for a 6.0 or less e.g Trossard

And thats why the question about who is better long term between TAA and Son.
Also am thinking i cant bravely captain TAA like i can Son

            He’ll get minutes though.
At 4.5m he will be better than any midfielder at that price.

Him and Soucek for 9.5m is a bargain.

Mitro is also on the chopping board but dcl now way out of reach so he can survive one more week

      1ft 1.2m banked

      Leno
      Robbo Saïss Taylor Justin
      Mane(c) auba* Rodriguez zaha
      Vardy Mitro

If Mane and Covid is not fake news, you would say you only have one captain option in Vardy. Arsenal fixtures not so great and even though Aubameyang is solid he rarely hauls...you'll be strong but average....i think you'll have to get KDB as another captain option. DCL too if you can

He's clearly got highly rated talent and I suspect Wilder is putting his trust in him after United's struggles in front of goal, there's definitely potential there.
