The best strikers to buy, sell and hold based on FPL goal threat from open play

With so many goals already this season, it’s all about strikers in Fantasy Premier League – but which ones should we sell, keep or buy?

We have already witnessed 103 goals over the first 28 matches of the campaign, an average of 3.68 per game. To put that into perspective, the previous Premier League record across the course of a full season was an average of 2.82 goals per game.

With nets bulging up and down the country, it is natural to assume that the bulk of the goals will be scored by strikers and, with the new handball regulations leading to more penalties being awarded, it is only natural to favour front-men on spot kick duties.

The FPL Eye Test - Gameweek 3 3

For example, the following forwards take penalties for their respective clubs:

  1. Neal Maupay (£6.5m) – Brighton
  2. Chris Wood (£6.5m) – Burnley
  3. Richarlison (£8.0m) – Everton
  4. Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) – Fulham
  5. Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) – Leicester City
  6. Callum Wilson (£6.4m) – Newcastle
  7. Danny Ings (£8.4m) – Southampton
  8. Harry Kane (£10.5m) – Spurs
  9. Charlie Austin/Hal Robson-Kanu (£5.4m) – West Brom
  10. Michail Antonio (£6.4m) – West Ham
  11. Raul Jimenez (£8.6m) – Wolves

CHECK OUT THE FULL PENALTY TAKERS LIST HERE

That’s a pretty large share out of the 20 teams. So, while 3-5-2 has been gaining popularity over the last few years, the number of penalty takers available at budget prices in forward positions may very well help cement the classic 3-4-3 as the preferred formation.

But do we want to be investing in strikers who rely exclusively on penalties? While there could be merit in that approach, surely we want to investing those who offer plenty of threat from open play as well.

So, let’s have a look how the league’s strikers have done so far using the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

    What have Son owners done?

    In GW3

I now think I am cursed.

Already have 2 City mids, Salah and Jamez.

Is Barnes a good shout or shall I hold?

#sufc: Told a deal for Brewster to sign is ‘close’, after terms of the transfer were agreed. Medical TBC’d and personal terms TBC’D.
The deal has to be done by midday today if he’s to be able to face #Arsenal on Sunday.

They have made quite a few decent chances but no one has been able to finish them. Brewster might do that and at 4.5 he doesn't need a whole lot of goals to be of value

After monitoring the Rhian Brewster transfer speculation for the last few weeks, I thought he'd be a shoo in as a 4.5 playing striker for Sheffield United.

However with the abundance of mid price forwards on pens like Ings, Maupay, Mitrovic, Jiminez, and Antonio, it seems there is value up front already.

Looking at it, that extra 1.5 or 2 million is nice, but is it worth the upgrade, especially the midfield? Not much of a difference between the 5/5.5 options (podence, klich, soucek) and the 7/7.5 options (mount, zaha, barnes). Especially at the expense of bringing in Brewster for one of the aforementioned forwards.

Not for me. Sheffield are relegation fodder this season and are incapable of scoring goals. Jimenez, Ings, DCL, Maupay and Antonio when fixtures improve are far superior for the extra outlay

        1. Zimo
          • 5 Years

How many goals does he need to get to be better value than them? 10 at most i think. He'll get that many. Remember that mcgoldrick is a huge chance waster that's why Sheffield don't score. They still make a decent amount of chances to score.

to be fair, they created plenty against Wolves and were unlucky not to score, likewise against Leeds who have Meslier to thank for some GK heroics.

McGoldrick accumulated 17 Big Chances and scored 2, McBurnie had 13 Big Chances and scored 3. Brewster's stronger finishing ability and quality will give him viability for sure. I would wait before writing him off or jumping on him, though I expect he'll be in my starting 11 against Fulham next GW.

U17 WC Golden Boot, 2nd top scorer in Championship after his move to Swansea and he's pretty highly rated so he should be more than decent with his off the ball movement.

Hit or miss in terms of doing that and correlation to success in the prem. Could be gold, could be uninvolved. My only point which I'm sure you agree with is this is a wait and see, not a cert to rip up a team for

There's not any difference between 5.5 and 7.5 mids yet but it won't continue for the rest of the season. A nailed 4.5 is always useful.

The likes of Antonio and Maupay are fantastic value for attacking players, but not great value compared to defenders. Value is relative.

              Which is why I prefer a 442.

I think the likes of Reece James, Lamptey, Trent, Robertson, Castagne, Digne or even KWP are better value than the forwards.

Currently have DCL Jimenez as my front 2, but I will probably have DCL Antonio up front eventually, when West Ham's fixtures improve and Wolves' drop. Then I'll pack the midfield.

I think the likes of Pulisic and Bale will come into our thinking soon, and with Salah/Mane/Sterling/KDB/Auba/Bruno/Rashford/Son all vying for our attention too, I think the midfield is the place to invest. Having an extra defender over a forward allows you to do this, and is better value.

Brewster enables this. For me he's someone you can bring off the bench when another one of your players has a bad fixture, or you need an auto-sub. I don't think he's going to score a whole lot of points, probably not more than a Lamptey, so he'd be primarily a benchee for me.

I have him in my team. IF he plays better option than most 4.5-5 defenders and a huge saving on anyone else up front.

makes 3-4-3 a very tasty, stick him alongside a pair from Jimi/Ings/DCL and you have big money to spend elsewhere.

Will his club update to sheff utd now then once the move is made as its not a loan move (hope so, robertson trent double up is then possible alongside salah)

Put it this way..... I currently have Bissouma coming in at 2nd sub at 4.5... Brewster could take that spot and instead of going up to a mitrovic or wood you can upgrade a 5 mill defender to Robertson.....

Your argument seems to be based on the fact, that the 1.5 - 2.0 more expensive forwards compared to Brewster are on pens.

Then I don't like the fact, that you subsequently state there is not much difference in Podence vs. Zaha 😉

Personally I like 3-5-2 more than 3-4-3, and therefore I think Brewster is fine.

Interesting perspective, but it's easy for me: you have to have three bench players, at least one of whom has to be a midfielder or a forward, which means that unless you spend a whole load extra to rotate viable cheap options (Soucek and Podence maybe), most people will have a fodder forward or midfielder at some point anyway.

Brewster is perfect for a forward fodder slot. He's as cheap as a forward can be and he's likely to end up spearheading the attack of a decent, well-managed PL team. 4.5m players are priced according to the following rough expectations:

              - Will never play for a bigger club
              - Will hardly ever play for a medium club
              - Will sometimes play for a smaller club but won't do much

He's extremely likely to exceed expectations in that middle bracket with this move. United don't have loads of money to waste on bench fodder. He will almost certainly represent excellent value.

Hell, even if he rarely plays he's an OK asset as you can keep him on the bench for 0.5m above baseline, and the potential upside is enormous. Well worth the risk involved in moving early, and likely to catch some hefty price rises if he starts to perform.

Yes, there is value at the moment up front but the template formation changes several times a season, and you don't need many injuries to key forwards to make the pool too thin to make you want to draw from them.

              Brewster's a no-brainer for me.

Great post, he wouldn't be on your bench for 0.5m above baseline though would he? Merely at baseline, as you say one benched asset must be a mid or forward anyway and their prices only start at 4.5m.

Completely agree and thanks for picking this up. I was working on the false assumption you could have 3x 4.0s on the bench - not true of course! So you have to spend at least 4.5 on at least one mid/fwd and in order to get a productive player in this bracket you need to stretch to 5.0 bare mimimum (Soucek), or more likely 5.5.

Thanks for the nice words 🙂

Agree and SHU were 10th for big chances created last season but scored very few. Brewsters quality means he should convert a few more than Mcburnie and McGoldrick.

Great question. Right now, I think I'd rather have the performing 6-7.5 m forwards and ignore him. I think he could be useful later in the season though if a switch to 3-5-2 is desired to get in the likes of Greenwood, Pulisic, Ziyech, Son etc as 3rd/4th mids, who are all currently non-options due to injury and transfer speculation.

I think for the time being going with a front 7 of:

Salah, KDB, Rodriguez, Podence (Burke benched)
              DCL, Ings, Jiminez

              or similar looks sensible.

Then in a few weeks, for the West Ham fixture swing and lets say that Chelsea have Ziyech and Pulisic back and firing, you could switch to:

              Salah, KDB, Son, Pulisic, Soucek
              Antonio, DCL (Brewster benched)

I think more than being a great asset in his own right, its importantly to be mindful of the potential he unlocks elsewhere in our squads. Sheffield united strikers tend to get very few chances, there's very little creativity in that side.

I'm biased because I got him in a GW2 WC, but I think people are underestimating Sheffield United. They have been unlucky not to score so far because their big chances (and penalty) fell to Lundstram. I can see a proper finisher doing very, very well.

A first choice (and he will be) 4.5 striker playing for an acceptable team, in a season where penalties are being won and scored at this rate

                Yes please

There's a lot of talk about United not creating enough opportunities or scoring enough goals. Good strikers create opportunities with their intelligence and movement. They do not have good strikers. It seems likely he'll improve them.

It also frees up a spot for me to chuck a playing defender, perhaps even a 4.0, on the bench

It all looks very rosy. Hope he does well. I already owned him so am biased!

As a 3rd striker he's surely a must now. Won't play until GW5, he'll have time with the squad and on U21 duty to keep fit and updated on shape. He takes penalties, albeit not well from the Shield result, and could easily take that duty from Lordstram, who also missed GW2.
I'm not going to take a -4 this week unless it's clear that I'll lose 0.2 team value, but with 13 hours left before price change I might be okay.

I wouldn't plan to play him in my XI without more evidence, but if he looks good, you could rotate him or nail him into your XI to save big money.

I wouldn't say there's an abundance of mid priced forward options. I can't see many competing with the likes of Ings, Jimenez and above for points, besides maybe DLC. Below DLC, I think returns will be scarce, long-term, and you're getting into the territory of considering playing an extra defender instead. So may as well drop to Brewster and bench him imo.

Another solid fodder option allows for more dodgy, unnailed, risky rotation picks like Foden, Greenwood, Mahrez, Saka etc, or defenders like Gabriel, Holding, Maitland-Niles, if playing more than 3 defenders, and good backup for corona emergencies. You can also consider non-Arsenal defenders 😆

But if you have 3 forwards in your plans, then he's not essential, especially if you plan to bench him, as I would. A fodder mid will do instead. You can still jump on him for cheap later on if you want rid of a forward, fo an easy boost in cash.

Maybe someone who hasn't had a double digit score in a while, has a series of no attacking returns, or has very low ownership.

WBA at home will probably suit R. Bertrand well as WBA have been extremely vunerable down the left flank. Other less owned players that might do well this week: H. Barnes and Neto.

6% ownership is too tasty to pass up vs the 2nd worst defense 'statistically' in the league so far playing upfront

Sterling to finally get in the goals. 14 away last season, brace midweek, Leeds will leave space. And Citeh love wallopping teams after they've lost a game

Why not? Against a Brighton side struggling for goals and leaking goals?

Me too. Arguably Everton's toughest fixture so far - with injuries and newfound expectation vs. solid team with pace. Countering. Strong defensively.

I'll be captaining him for the 3rd gw running.
He's outperformed a lot more expensive captain picks in that time.
