The Fantasy Flutter: Leeds and City to pay the penalty?

Sponsored by bet365

Every Saturday morning, we combine Fantasy football with a flutter as we put a small wager or two on the weekend fixtures.

Focusing exclusively on the Gameweek 4 matches, we’ll be turning to the vast array of data available in our Premium Members Area to inspire a few sensibly staked bets this weekend.

The odds featured in this piece are all provided by our official sportsbook partner, bet365.

Please gamble responsibly and always remember: when the fun stops, stop.

MISFIRING MAGPIES

Unsurprisingly bottom of the shots on target table this season are Newcastle United, who have mustered only three such efforts – and scored from all of them.

The Magpies were indebted to a controversial penalty award in Gameweek 4 in order for them to salvage a point from their clash with Spurs, while they were comprehensively outplayed by Brighton on home soil a week before that.

Only West Bromwich Albion (0.66) are averaging fewer big chances per match than Newcastle (1.00) among Premier League clubs this season.

Burnley are next up for Steve Bruce’s side, with the Clarets recording clean sheets in both meetings with the Tyneside club in 2019/20.

The return of James Tarkowski should help solidify a backline that hasn’t yet recorded a shut-out this season but who kept 15 of them in the campaign just gone.

The Clarets are 15/4 with bet365 to win to nil, with a 1-0 Burnley victory priced at 8/1.

For some reason, bet365’s Bore Draw Money Back offer sprung to mind when we saw this fixture…

Bore Draw Money Back

Refund for any Soccer game that finishes 0-0 at bet365.

Applies to losing pre-match bets on any Correct Score, Half-Time/Full-Time or Scorecast markets. Bet restrictions and T&Cs apply. New and eligible customers only.

FLOUNDERING FULHAM

Backing against the Premier League whipping boys isn’t big or clever – but who knows, it might be profitable.

Fulham have conceded at least three goals in all three of their Premier League fixtures to date and even did so again in the EFL Cup in midweek, going down 3-0 to Championship side Brentford.

A wounded Wolves outfit are up next for Scott Parker’s beleaguered troops, who will also be without arguably their stand-out performer at the back (an injured Kenny Tete) when they make the trip to Molineux.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side seldom seem to put teams to the sword and have scored four or more goals only once in their 79 Premier League fixtures since promotion was sealed in May 2018.

Three goals is within their grasp, however: they have managed this on a further nine occasions since they came back up from the second tier of English football.

With uncertainty raging over who will start for Santo’s troops this week, there is at least the knowledge that Raul Jimenez is a ‘nailed’ presence in attack.

The Mexican started 37 of Wolves’ 38 league games in 2019/20 and played a part in 50% of the goals that his club scored when he was on the pitch.

A Jimenez goal at any time in a 3-0 win for Wolves over Fulham this weekend is 13/1 with bet365, with the Jimenez anytime/Wolves 3-1 combo available for 18/1.

SPOT-KICK SURRENDERERS

There has been much talk of penalty awards since the 2020/21 campaign got underway, with a whopping 20 of them arriving in the first 28 fixtures of this season – as many as we had in the first nine Gameweeks of 2019/20.

A softening of the handball rule could come into place this weekend but it won’t stop all of the contentious awards; the one that Spurs conceded last weekend, for instance, would still have been given.

A remarkable eight of the 20 penalties that have been awarded have come in matches involving Leeds United and Manchester City – who just happen to meet each other this weekend.

Bet365 are offering 6/4 for any penalty to be awarded in this game, with the Whites 6/1 to score from the spot and City at 5/2.

Backing the sides to miss from 12 yards returns 20/1 and 10/1 respectively.

SUPER SIX?

This seems like one of those Gameweeks that is too good to be true: your FPL team looks great on paper, there is an abundance of captaincy choices and the fixtures are favourable.

It’s at this point where the universe usually intervenes – but that won’t stop us from going for broke with our sixfold of home wins.

All of the above are matches in which the home side is odds-on to win in Gameweek 4 – and an accumulator not only returns 15/1 with bet365, it also comes with a 15% bonus on top of that.

Soccer Accumulator Bonus

Up to 70% bonus for accumulators on a wide range of selected leagues and competitions. Applies to pre-match accumulators of 3+ selections on standard Full Time Result, Both Teams To Score or Result/Both Teams To Score markets only.

Bonus percentage is dependent on number of selections. Bonus capped at £100k and applied to returns. Bet restrictions and T&Cs apply. New and eligible customers only.

I think West Ham is very underrated team now. Can see them ending up in the top half of the table or even fighting for 8th place. Maybe I'm crazy but considering tripling up on WHU if I'm on WC around GW8 (Antonio, Bowen and one of Masuaku or Soucek).

Well, Masuaku only played 2 games but is top for xA among the defenders. That could have been just the up side of the variance but he is rinteresting. Will monitor him closely. Soucek is a good value and possibly 4.9m soon. For how offensively he plays he's an interesting asset, even despite a lot of people ditched him already because of not scoring every GW in tough fixtures (and we're talking about 5m player...). Antonio if he is 6.2 or so will be such a good value. I still think he is massively underrated as stats doesn't show he declined massively from the end of last season. Underlying stats are still there. (only he's finishing could be a problem. It seems he tends to underperform xG).

I agree they've looked good in last two, the benefit of having a plan from GW8 is more games to assess before committing. I am certainly thinking of a Soucek/Antonio double up from 8

And btw, they don't have to score FPL points in every GW. They only have to perform well for their price. FPL is about finding value and underpriced players...

Avoid the triple up. Our fixtures definitely turn in a few weeks time but we haven’t looked solid defensively for a few years now, clean sheets are few and far between.
Bowen is the one attacker that I would be happy to own throughout the season, he’s been absolutely immense & I expect big returns for him this year.

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 7 Years

Thanks for the opinion. I was thinking about Masuaku more because of his attacking threat. He has some really good stats so far this season. But as for now I think I wouldn't get him, but I will monitor him closely. But as I say, I don't have time to watch all the games so stats can also be misleading (especially from small samples). Bowen & Antonio is what is interesting me the most.

        1. BoleynWin
          • 6 Years

No worries pal. Masuaku has been playing very well to be fair, 99% of West Ham fans were really displeased with his performances over the last season or two. Simply because he can’t defend & was a liability at left back, Moyes has pushed him further up into the three behind the striker and he has excelled so far. He can beat a man and his crossing has definitely improved, whether he will hold and nail that spot down remains to be seen as Yarmalenko / Snodgrass have been knocking on the door in the development squad the last few weeks. Keep an eye on it though

What’s changed?! Not the rules!! Until the powers that be change the laws of the game, referees have to adhere, otherwise you get huge inconsistencies between refs and that would be a much worse situation

Sterling vs Arsenal doesn't really appeal to me. Neither does Salah vs Everton.

What are the Covid19 rules? Will the players have to be out for x days or just until they can document a negative test?

    Gut feeling: Ings
    Majority + brain: KDB

I can't decide who should be my Captain

Had the armband on KDB, Jimenez, Ings and DCL throughout the week. But think I’m gonna go with Sterling. Thoughts?

For me Sterling is the best pick. I'm worried not having him if Leeds defend like they did against Liverpool.

Stupid using a FH just to get Sterling and Ings in my side and erase a -4 I did for Son, Werner to Barnes, Jimenez?

    G2G?

    VVD Saiss James Taylor
    Salah Sterling Rodriguez Podence*
    DCL Jimi

    Nyland Mitchell Davis Son*

    Save with no transfers?

    Ryan | McCarthy
    TAA | Doherty* | KWP | Lascelles* | Ferguson
    Salah | KdB | Greenwood* | Podence | Bissouma
    Kane | Mitrovic* | Adams

WC over the International Break or not?

    My thoughts:
    1. I'm pretty set on my core (TAA, Salah, KdB, Kane) and wouldn't change it barring any injuries

    2. Ferguson, Bissouma (4.5 mid) and GKs are not players I'm looking to change anyway. Might go Brewster as 4.5 FWD and switch to 3-5-2 depending on how he plays. But that'll be after a week or two.

3: KWP and Adams and have good underlying stats and good fixtures going forward. So, doesn't make sense to remove them. Unless I decide to go Ings instead of Adams.

4: Doherty, Lascelles, Greenwood and Mitrovic are 4 players I am thinking of changing in the coming 2 weeks.

So, should I take a punt this week and WC next week or just use transfers on these 4 players and take a couple of hits combined over 2 weeks?

tldr: Punt transfer this week and WC over International Break or save WC and just take a couple of hits over 2 weeks?

Personally, I'd wildcard as I don't like your strikers. Also, you can do much better than Doherty and Lascelles for £10.5M. Ferguson needs to go as well.

So I made a mistake and got Vinagre as part of a -8 hit, but then realised he may be transferred, so panicked and got Coady in, but now on -12.

    Question

    a) stick with -12 and swallow it
    b) free hit
    c) major surgery on my team with an early WC

    Thanks!

It's not the worst time for a -12 tbh. If you're happy with your team going forward, I'd stick. This GW will be bad but you should make up for it in the coming weeks.
