Jimenez blanks as Saiss earns bonus from wing-back berth and Vinagre departs

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 1-0 FULHAM

  • Goals: Pedro Neto (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Leander Dendoncker (£4.9m)
  • Bonus:  Max Kilman (£4.0m) x3, Romain Saiss (£5.1m), Willy Boly (£5.5m) x2

A dour 1-0 win for Wolves at home to Fulham did very little to repay the faith shown by the net 141,000 managers who brought in Raul Jimenez (£8.6m) for Gameweek 4.

Nuno Espirito Santo summed the game up with three lines in his post-match offering:

Not quite (the performance I wanted). Not so compact in defence and not quite creative in attack. I think we should improve.

Going into more detail, the Wolves boss added:

We started the game well, organised. We had some problems in attack. Fulham were organised.

Second half we were much better, we created and were on the front foot and got the goal. It was important to bounce back from last week but we know it is important to improve.

We made a lot of things better than last week but with our standards I believe we should do better. We should manage the game better after we score.

I want to see what’s missing – we need to be sharper, we need to pass the ball faster, we need to control the ball, combine, turn faster, win duels. There are a lot of things to improve.

JIM PICKINGS

Nuno was spot on in his assessment of Wolves’ attack in the first half, though seven chances created in the whole game is indicative of a poor attacking performance across the 90 minutes.

Of Jimenez’s three shots in the game, only the one after 54 minutes was a particularly decent scoring opportunity: a Max Kilman (£4.0m) clearance ended up putting the Mexico striker in a one-on-one situation with Alphonse Areola (£4.5m). Jimenez, fresh from signing a new four-year deal at Molineux, shot straight at the Fulham goalkeeper and Areola then held the ball from Leander Dendoncker‘s (£4.9m) follow-up attempt.

Two minutes later, a blocked Dendoncker effort ended up at the feet of Pedro Neto (£5.5m), who slotted a left-footed effort into the right-hand side of the net.

PRE-SAISS PLAY

With Marcal (£4.9m) injured and Ruben Vinagre (£4.4m) on his way out of the club, Romain Saiss (£5.1m) took over at left wing-back. However, it appears likely that the Moroccan will revert to his usual position with Wolves adding further cover at left wing-back.

Saiss was joint-top for clearances, blocks and interceptions (seven) with Kilman, who operated on the left-hand side of Wolves’ central defensive unit and ended up bagging maximum bonus points.

Saiss’ eight-point score was also a bonus for those who invested in Wolves for a sustained run of favourable fixtures from Gameweek 4.

CANDID KAMARA

As with Wolves, Fulham fashioned just one ‘big’ opportunity in the tie which fell to Aboubakar Kamara (pictured above with Saiss).

The £5.0m midfielder was unselfishly found in the area by Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m), who had been released after excellent play by substitute Ademola Lookman (£5.0m).

Kamara only managed to shoot straight at Rui Patricio (£5.5m), mirroring Jimenez’s failure to make a gilt-edged chance count.

Scott Parker, however, was upbeat about his team’s performance despite a fourth consecutive defeat in four gameweeks.

The Fulham chief said:

I am delighted and proud of the team in what they produced today. They showed every facet of what a team needs to show, it has been well documented defensively in terms of conceding goals.

For large parts we nullified their threat as a counter-attacking team and on the other side of it we defended as best we can. We have been absolutely gutted at some of the goals we have conceded – the players are hurting as much as anyone they are not winning games.

I think we got a performance today. We have had that in other games as well. If you could, you would wave a magic wand or click a finger and everything would be perfect but it is not that easy.

On Lookman, who was part of a more sustained offensive threat from Fulham in the last quarter of the game, Parker added:

You saw the boy’s quality in the time he had on the pitch. There is a directness about him, a willingness to cause problems and that is what we need. He will be a massive asset for us.

Parker set his troops up in a 4-2-3-1 formation at Molineux, with Joe Bryan (£4.9m) and Antonee Robinson (£4.4m) interchangeable on the left flank.

NELSON’S COLUMN

Nelson Semedo (£5.5m) came within inches of scoring in the opening half, with Areola just about managing to deflect the defender’s effort over the bar with a sprawling save.

That opportunity came about after the keeper had spilled a Neto shot into Semedo’s path.

The wing-back came off after 77 minutes with what looked like an injury, though it was downplayed by Nuno after the game.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Kilman, Coady, Boly; Saiss, Neves, Dendoncker, Semedo (Hoever 77′); Neto (Traoré 83′), Jimenez, Podence (Moutinho 70′).

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Robinson, Ream, Le Marchand, Aina; Anguissa, Cairney; Bryan (Kamara 67′), De Cordova-Reid (Kebano 81′), Cavaleiro (Lookman 67′); Mitrovic.

    Thoughts on the following WC?

    Martinez (Steer)
    Robertson, Justin, Mitchell (KWP, Konsa)
    Salah, KDB, Son, Rodriguez (Bissouma)
    Kane, DCL, Brewster

Would you downgrade KDB in order to improve defence / Brewster?

You're predicting future points not past ones. KdB still created 5 chances in the Leeds game, hit the post and has pens.

Still think Son(9) + Jrod(7.8) will outscore KDB (11.6) + 5.2 midfielder in the next 5/6 games. Well, not if Jorginho (5.1) gets a penalty a game 😉

Feels like a slightly tenuous comparison. & I don't think one freak game is enough to banish the idea of a Robbo / TAA double up. They're still gonna score higher than most more expensive attacking players this season.

I ditched Mahrez instead. I have a sneaking feeling that 8.4m midfield slot belonging to a Chelsea mid is going to be a nice differential slot that people are going to really struggle to fill.

It's amusing how TAA opinions like "essential" and "would have him at 8.5" or "worth it for his attacking returns alone" have completely disappeared. Goes to show how quickly the landscape can change in FPL.

I dont think they are essential to have, LIV would be impossible to repeat last year's scores. Plus they were fortunate to practically play the same starting XI every GW, no big injuries or rotation. I expect all of them to lose games this year and even when they play, i think conceding 3 to Leeds and 7 to AVL when you have invested 6.5, 7 or 7.5 for a defender (or even more than that if you have to of them) you would prefer to just get 5 defs with 4.5 and invest all your budget in attack. I dont have LIV defs and cant see me getting one of them unless their ownership goes much lower.

I'm looking to bring Robbo in. I think he'll outscore TAA this year based on his more aggressive positioning and equal duty on set pieces (other than direct FKs).

He's looked a better FPL asset all season.

          Goalposts change.

Last season, Mark refused to get KdB and persisted with Sterling to his detriment. Nobody would have said at the start of the season that KdB would be the better FPL asset and yet positioning, set pieces and PKs tilted it in his favor.

I see more of Liverpool's attacking going down the left and TAA being pushed back more because teams know that Liverpool's right was more dangerous but also weaker, so they are being pressed back more.

I think Robertson's increased goal threat outstrips it.

So far, Robbo's xG is 0.86 vs TAAs 0.24.

TAA scored 3 free kicks last season and one goal from open play. I don't think this is worth 0.5m more. Robbo has already scored a goal from open play and now he's on corners on the left side (and gotten an assist).

I just don't think there's 0.5m in value there. I would have said there was at the start of the season, but as I said, the goalposts change.

Good luck. I’ll have you a formerly bet that TAA gets more points per £ from here on. You e also got tsimikas who might take more game time off robbo - make him more ‘testable’ than TAA. Price aside, I don’t see an argument for robbo - certainly not this speculation that Liverpool will attack down the opposite side to the one that Salah plays on. Of Trent drops to 7.4 as looks likely then it changes the goalsoosts again for you

Okay, I'll take that friendly bet.

Robbo to outscore TAA in terms of points per £ for the season. We'll bookmark it and come back to it.

this is a good point, Robertson has more freedom knowing he has VVD behind. Gomez has been a train wreck since project restart, and that is being reflected in a deeper position for TAA (who is also an average defender).

You can see teams increasingly targeting Liverpool's right flank.

You could also argue that TAA has Salah infront of Homs nd crosses to mane who is better in the air. But I wouldn’t use either argument to overlook that Trent takes the vast majority of free kicks

of course he is a danger from free kicks. but in open play Robertson looks better. even if the two cancel each other out, Robertson is cheaper.

Robertson takes freekicks on the left side when they're deep as well as the left sided corners. The only thing TAA takes that Robbo doesn't is direct FKs.

Don't think Arsenal(A), Leicester (A),West Ham(A) and Leeds in the next 6 are nice fixtures for Villa. We are all still hungover from the Liverpool match

What would you do about 4.0 def spot while on WC? Mitchell surely gonna lost or already lost his place.

No good options at that price point. These guys are just budget enablers. Rumours that PVA could still be sold today, so might be one to watch

Mitchell is 4.1, you are better off finding 0.3 to get Cooper or Balbuena at 4.4. Otherwise take gamble on Kilman at 4.0

Foden up against Arsenal is quite an attractive fixture, IMO, and Bamford has delivered so far - no reason to take him out yet.

If you picked Foden than stick for at least few more games cuz this is that kind of pick where you may get 1-2 points in 2 games and haul in third one.
Maupay looks like really nice pick esp with pens so B if rest of the team is fine.

    Martinez (Foster)
    Saiss - James - Justin (C. Taylor - Mitchell)
Grealish - KDB - Salah - Rodriguez (Burke)
    Kane - Maupay - Jimenez

    Anything to improve?

Watkins will be a solid pick, looking at our fixtures from GW6 onwards.

Rodrigo looked excellent too, but I still don't think he's nailed on.

Ousmane Dembele apparently joining MU. Could really do with a different CB than Maguire. Would even start Smalling with Bailly or Lindelof against Newcastle.

Maguire is the best CB we have. He might not be playing very well but still better than Lindelof and especially Bailly.

May I get some educated thoughts on this please?

Aurier vs Reguilon on a WC and why?

Reguilon, cause Aurier won't start much once Doherty is fit.

      He's also very good.

Reguilon will start most games, Davies will take some time too though, so i d have a backup playing def. Aurier showed quality but is not consistent at all, i believe he ll share time with Doherty during the heavy schedule

Comparing of Son and Watkins (14.9m) versus Kane and Grealish (17.6m), which duo looks the best?

The money saved with Son and Watkins, can be used second premium def in or moves a podence up to a Barnes/JRob, or is the extra for Kane and Jack worth it due to pens

I don't think Jack is on pens.

Who is on penalties for Villa? Im considering Grealish, and kind of assumed it would be him.

Grealish has taken one penalty for Villa and he missed it.

Watkins has missed 3 of his last 4 (trusting transfrmarkt stats...)

So I think it might be Barkley. Not sure though.
