Scoutcast Episode 347 – Making sense of the first four Gameweeks

Joe and Az are joined by Karam to try to make sense of a bizarre opening four Gameweeks of the Fantasy Premier League season.

With Aston Villa and West Ham United notching surprise wins against Liverpool and Leicester City respectively, the last set of fixtures were particularly odd.

Armed with Premium Members Area statistics and information, they use the international break to investigate why certain defences are performing better. Could the ‘new normal’ of this socially distanced, fan-free campaign be a factor?

Top attacks are also considered with Tottenham Hotspur’s revival as a goal-scoring force among issues picked out by Joe.

Meanwhile, Karam’s focus is on the best strikers to target. From premium picks to budget buys, there is plenty of choice.

Az ponders the merits of expensive defenders, when so many cheaper alternatives are delivering for FPL managers. His section of the Scoutcast includes a shocking fact involving the most creative defenders so far.

Elsewhere, there’s another extended ‘Rough with the Smooth’ section, as results conspire to bring joy, and certainly woe, to many in the community.

This week’s focus is firmly on the season so far and whether there are any lessons to learn for our trio. Next week’s episode will focus in more detail on Gameweek 5 transfer and captaincy plans, especially as most international fixtures will have been completed by then.

Am forced to if I decide to go with KDB on my WC. If I go without him then I can stretch to Robbo which I think I prefer!

Me. I'm on WC and can't afford a 6.5m-7.0m def that barely gets returns and makes me make sacrifices elsewhere for nothing!
I'm going all out mids and forwarders.

Your third midfielder is 5.5m, that will not give you much flexibility in the future. Shaw and Vardy aren't great picks.

    B) Kane + Grealish

Dcl slightly over grealish as Everton is more attacking overall .

Son and Kane on a par for me with Son being cheaper. DCL is the better pick over Grealish for me so id go A

Value is the same because of FanTeam.

In FPL, Son + DCL is way better because it saves a lot of money. But in FanTeam, B is actually cheaper!

Finding this tough to call, A or B on WC:

I think B now, with an eye to get KDB back from GW9. It's tough, though because KDB and MCI haven't become terrible overnight and they're about to get Aguero back. However, Kane has the fixtures and the form and they're about to add Bale to the mix which could improve Kane's assist and pens potential (or be a complete flop!).

I guess you mean you ll bench either Brewster or Soucek. Kane seems capable to get more points than KDB at this point and Soucek is a great first sub, although keep in mind that he can score vs anyone so you may bench some good points there. Anyway, B by far

      B

Kane better than KDB at this moment and Soucek seems to be good value at that price. Brewster is an unknown given that he is joining a team in bad form.

    Best Wildcard Draft?

    A) 3-4-3
    Martinez, Forster
    Robbo, Chilwell, Semedo, Dallas, Mitchell
    Salah, Son, JRod, Grealish, Bissouma
    Kane, DCL, Maupay

    B) 3-5-2

Theoretically (if you have KDB at 11.5 and got DCL early):

      4.5 - 4.0
      Robertson - 5.0 - 4.5 - Lamptey - Mitchell

Yes, i have seen several teams with 3-5-2 with those 4 but not too many teams who can accommodate them in a (strong) 3-4-3. Which is the formation I prefer for this season given how value forwards are performing.

Just saw the players' schedule, some of them will play three games in 8 days, and then travel back during the virus madness. I guess this GW we ll have more hits than all the previous weeks together.

But if those transfers were for Son / Salah they make a bit more sense because they have no IB commitments or travel.

I agree, although doubt most people transferring in Son or Salah knew about it. I usually do early transfers at this point to get a bit of value, since later it could be handy, although i am pretty sure at least one hit will be needed now, hopefully no more!

    Pick two for a wildcard:

    A) Pulisic
    B) Rodriguez
    C) Zaha
    D) Grealish

Price doesn't matter as I want to be flexible and be able to switch between them.

On a WC. Really stuck with this decision. Have Son already.

      A. Kane
      B. KDB

Kane feels more exciting while Man City don't look great.
KDB pick based mostly on fear. He punished me instantly for taking him out before Arsenal last year.

It’s probably Kane at the moment on a WC. You need a route to a city mid in a few weeks though.

        KDB.

Unpopular opinion, but Kane is still a bit overpriced. His points per 90 last season was less than Son's and yet he costs 1.5m more. Nothing to suggest so far that he's better than Son either.

Used FT for Bruno to Son. I have another FT and 2.5M in bank

      McCarthy, Steer
      TAA, Justin, Lascelles, Taylor, Mitchell
      Salah, KDB, Son, Podence, Bissouma
      Ings, Mitrovic, DCL

      1 - Lascelles --> Chilwell
      2 - Ings ---> Kane
      3 - Podence ---> Grealish/JRod
      4 - Mitrovic ---> Maupay/Watkins
      5 - Wildcard

On a wildcard at the moment, playing about.

-Wilson and Saiss/Zouma (Any defender worth up to 5.1)
      -or Robbo and Brewster?

Def is kinda weak with Zouma, Mitchell, Justin, KWP and Kilman
Up top is Kane & DCL & wilson.

I've always had the idea of going with consistency, that's why I'm worried about missing out with Robbo. Get penalized when I don't but I agree with you here.

      A) Justin + Jrod

      B) Chilwell + Grealish

      Other defenders

      Jwp + Saiss.

Pretty weak back line and even weaker bench.

First stab at WC Team. I think need some Chelsea/City midfield and attack but not sure who...

      McCarthy (Nyland)
      Robbo, Chilwell, Saiss (Justin)(Mitchell)
      Salah, Son, Rod, Grealish (Bissouma)
      Kane, DCL, Maupay

Need KDB imo, taking out the FA cup result vs Arsenal. Man City have scored 3 in their last three meetings (to my knowledge), then West Ham, well yeah.. goals galore.

Looks fine for now and will be only 2 transfers away from getting in KDB at a later point.

Justin not nailed so might as well change to a guaranteed option to save a transfer down the line.

Why is nobody talking about Kilman (Wolves defender) for just 4.0m?

He played his first game last weekend and already was one of the best defenders in the game....in fact he got 3 bonus points too.

True, he might not be nailed but he can still be a useful shoe-in for those like me squeezing all they can in a WC to go strong on the mids.

I still think he impressed Nuno last time round though...we will see. If Kilman plays next GW, prepare for the Bandwagon !

I look at the stats. If you ignore the first game which they were rubbish, Arsenal 3 shots on target, Wolves 2 shots on target, Leicester 0 shot on target. If 3 games 5 shots on target isn't impressive I don't know what is.

Fixtures are not good and they are not popular, although Cres proves to be a good punt even with the tough fixtures. I do not know if they can keep it up but apart from the first game they were very serious and surprisingly stable in defence and attack. I do not think Spurs will win easily but there is a chance the break will change many things and the teams as we know them so far. I agree on WC at least one WHU asset has to be included in the team with this form and they will have finished an amazingly tough schedule after 3 GWs
