Scoutcast Episode 347 – Making sense of the first four Gameweeks

Joe and Az are joined by Karam to try to make sense of a bizarre opening four Gameweeks of the Fantasy Premier League season.

With Aston Villa and West Ham United notching surprise wins against Liverpool and Leicester City respectively, the last set of fixtures were particularly odd.

Armed with Premium Members Area statistics and information, they use the international break to investigate why certain defences are performing better. Could the ‘new normal’ of this socially distanced, fan-free campaign be a factor?

Top attacks are also considered with Tottenham Hotspur’s revival as a goal-scoring force among issues picked out by Joe.

Meanwhile, Karam’s focus is on the best strikers to target. From premium picks to budget buys, there is plenty of choice.

Az ponders the merits of expensive defenders, when so many cheaper alternatives are delivering for FPL managers. His section of the Scoutcast includes a shocking fact involving the most creative defenders so far.

Elsewhere, there’s another extended ‘Rough with the Smooth’ section, as results conspire to bring joy, and certainly woe, to many in the community.

This week’s focus is firmly on the season so far and whether there are any lessons to learn for our trio. Next week’s episode will focus in more detail on Gameweek 5 transfer and captaincy plans, especially as most international fixtures will have been completed by then.

It's also strange how nobody speaks of Sterling & Mane, but just KDB and Salah.

It's easy to forget their potential. Mane nearly got his hat trick 2 GW's ago too (without penalties) and nearly equaled Salah before his covid mishap and Sterling is starting to show his form inside the box again.

    Just food for thought.

I would double up on Salah & Mane if the stars we aligned, don’t think I would the two City players because of fear that one could be benched.

But there is such value elsewhere in the likes Son, Bruno, James, Chelsea mids etc so I think I will only have one top priced premium out of Salah, Mane, KDB & Sterling long term ... and that is Salah

I'll likely double up on City attack (some combination of 2 of KDB/Sterling/Aguero) from GW10 when they have BUR, FUL, mun, WBA, sou, NEW.

It makes no sense now. Very surprised to see how many top managers did it.

I would be happy with Kun/Jesus (depending on injuries) and a mid, but not both Sterling & KDB at the same time.

People use small factors as tiebreakers between them as it's the easy way to do it and a majority flock to one side, but in reality, they are both 50-50 calls.

Salah, Son or Kane on the C?

What are we thinking of Ollie Watkins, DCL/Ings of last year or an one off game?

I trust Grealish more from last season and this season already but I’ll have to wait another week avoiding hits.
If I was to get in Watkins, I would probably have to take out Maupay and despite Brighton’s poor performance against Everton. Maupay feels consistent enough for 6.5m

Also a small possibility of getting Callum Wilson but as a Newcastle Fan, I don’t trust Newcastle to play the football they are at the moment.

Game late Wednesday night, Bd then the early kick off Saturday. Really unfortunate set of fixtures. Can see a benching tbh

The game is Tuesday night local time in South America. It's after midnight UK time (1:30 BST) which is why people are saying here that it's on Wednesday. Also worth noting that Colombia only have two total matches, unlike many European teams that have three.

In any case, he certainly could blank, but he is a professional athlete and I don't see Carlo benching him in a very important game.

Lots a single digit price rises but who has players that have actually provided a sell price profit? I am sitting on these but have a couple of players that have dropped too

    Salah .1, 12.0 -12.2
    James .1, 7.5-7.8
    DCL .3, 7.0-7.6

Its fair to say, if you had DCL & James from season start, got the two hauls of Kane & Son and had Salah from Day 1, then you are safely in the worlds top 1000. Maybe thats pointing out the obvious!

Connor Roberts, the Swansea & Wales right wing back replying to a question about his team mate Joe Rodon going to Spurs or WHU etc. ....
"I would say he's been pretty poor over the last season or so, so I'm not sure why the big clubs are looking at him because he's been poor and not performing well, so I think it would be best if he did stay at Swansea and continued to try and improve."

How many and which big hitters - 9.0 and above, would you have in your team now?

I assume you may have 3 of them to keep some balance in the team (Or do you disagree?), so I would go with Kane, Son and Salah. Don't really think that KDB/Sterling, being also 11.5!, should significantly (If at all) outcore these 3 guys for now.

Not really a fair comparison, very rarely would I ever expect a premium midfielder to blank, they can get points against anyone. A defender getting points against Liverpool however is generally quite unlikely

I feel premium defenders are premium for a reason... they can get attacking returns against anyone. Digne could easily assist against Pool

He could... but Ayling and Saiss have better clean sheet odds plus attacking potential and Soucek is massively due a goal

No, but defenders are more sensitive to fixtures than other positions. Their main way of getting points requires conceding no goals, which simply isn't possible in most cases against top opponents. It's much easier for a mid or forward to score a goal against a top opponent.

I agree to a certain extent... premium defenders like TAA almost play as attackers rather than defenders. They score their 200+ a season due to their attacking return hauls, not so much their CSs.

A player is priced for the points they are likely to return over a large number of games, not on a game by game basis. If you looked at player's expected value on a game by game basis their price would fluctuate massively depending on the fixture, you'd have some weeks where 'cheap' defenders would be priced higher than a 'premium' defender. I don't think you should view things as black and white as premium vs non premium for benching decisions

I prefer the rule of benching players you think are most likely to score the least points in the current gameweek.

I always own TAA and bench him in Man City games. It has worked great for me so far.

I dont mind benching a premium def in those games, i agree with the starting XI. Having 4 players from the first game could go really well or horrible, better to spread the possible returns.

I'm on something similar to A, slightly different defense and not sure about the 3rd striker. Antonio or Watkins under consideration.

Hey Fellas, Care to comment on my WC team?

    Martinez Forster
    Robertson Chilwell Aurier Ayling Dunne
    Salah Son James Grealish ?
    Kane DCL ?

Should i get Zaha (play 3-5-2) or Maupay (3-4-3l ? Any other suggestions? Feel like Aurier would be the first choice RB after his performance against united. Thanks!

Aurier rotation risk Reguilon is safer and I would say DCL + Maupay and KDB

      A

Think it's always worth naming a player rather than simply putting 4.5 def as it will probably skewer results

The problem with A is you wouldn't want to put chilwell on bench ever because of Fomo. I'd prefer rotating 4.5s

    Semedo Lamptey James
KDB (c) Son Salah Grealish Barnes
    DCL Jimi
    Steer Saiss Brewster Mitchell

Brewster on the bench with FUL...

Problem is, I don't see what choice you have. I wish I had picked Brewster over Davis...

James a bit of a rotation risk for me, rest isn't bad at all though.

Kieran Tierney has to self isolate for 14 days (starting yesterday) after Scotland midfielder Stuart Armstrong tested positive for Covid, according to the Scottish FA. Tierney has been deemed to have been in close contact with Armstrong.

That would rule him out of Man City away.

No Trent. And I know it's tough to help without any context of the rest of the team but I'm looking at this purely based on short term fixtures/potential

    Mccarthy button
    TAA James ayling Taylor mitchell
    Kdb sterling Bruno soucek bissouma
    DCL jimmy Adams

    A) sterling to son
