Scoutcast Episode 347 – Making sense of the first four Gameweeks

Joe and Az are joined by Karam to try to make sense of a bizarre opening four Gameweeks of the Fantasy Premier League season.

With Aston Villa and West Ham United notching surprise wins against Liverpool and Leicester City respectively, the last set of fixtures were particularly odd.

Armed with Premium Members Area statistics and information, they use the international break to investigate why certain defences are performing better. Could the ‘new normal’ of this socially distanced, fan-free campaign be a factor?

Top attacks are also considered with Tottenham Hotspur’s revival as a goal-scoring force among issues picked out by Joe.

Meanwhile, Karam’s focus is on the best strikers to target. From premium picks to budget buys, there is plenty of choice.

Az ponders the merits of expensive defenders, when so many cheaper alternatives are delivering for FPL managers. His section of the Scoutcast includes a shocking fact involving the most creative defenders so far.

Elsewhere, there’s another extended ‘Rough with the Smooth’ section, as results conspire to bring joy, and certainly woe, to many in the community.

This week’s focus is firmly on the season so far and whether there are any lessons to learn for our trio. Next week’s episode will focus in more detail on Gameweek 5 transfer and captaincy plans, especially as most international fixtures will have been completed by then.

I was very tempted to wildcard this week but have decided to save. I have a few issues like Doherty, Mitro and maybe Podence (too much of a rotation risk at this moment in time for me). As well as that a few players might drop in price (Davis & KDB already, TAA likely). Will probably have 1m less in squad value not using the WC, but that is the main downside as I think my team is decent apart from those 2/3 issues.

However there seems to be a new covid case in the league everyday right now. It could get worse. Should this be considered when playing a wildcard? There is so much uncertainty that maybe this season it makes sense to be particularly cautious, and the threshold for how bad your team needs to look to push the wildcard button should be higher. A more 'save for a rainy day' approach rather than 'seize the opportunity'.

I'm holding on to my WC for that reason. I'm generally happy with my team aside from a few players losing value (ASM), I just need a couple of FTs to tidy it up a bit and get some Everton players in for deadweight.

Wish i had kept ASM rather than got Podence for a hit! My team value might go below 100m by the end of the week. Feels awful, but don’t think my team is too bad. Just hope it doesn’t bite me later on.

      Absolutely.

Also, if you do wind up not needing the WC until GW16, then you can use it to set up for DGW19.

I’ve got a lot of the same issues as you. Doherty, Mitro, Podence, TAA, KDB. I've thought about wildcarding but haven't yet. I think Mitro might get some points in the next few fixtures. Hopefully Lookman and RLC will help create chances.

Yep I watched the Wolves Fulham game and Lookman completely changed the game. Mitro was feeding off scraps before that. I think he's *ok* and not worth a transfer given other issues, but definitely other similar priced strikers I'd rather have. And yes 4 good fixtures coming up. Those wildcarding in GW2 and GW3 don't seem to have benefitted so hopefully it is the same this week 🙂

I don't think KDB and TAA are "issues." They're literally two of the best players in the world who just had one bad game. Be wary of recency bias.

I expect one game week to be hit with a few injuries and then no doubt a covid blow and be down to 8 or 9 front line players and having to rely on my bench to save me ... so likewise I have held off on my WC this week.

I have 14 players that should start and a bench of McCarthy, Soucek, KWP & 4.0 Bernardo, but worry if a couple of my big hitters get a late covid quarantine, in which case the WC will be chucked in the pot

Yep. It is probably the only reason i haven't wildcarded yet. I was going to put Son in for KDB tonight but i probably should hold now. It is all kicking off again. Hold the WC imo

In retrospect it hasn’t worked out so far. And with Allison out, he admites he will probably have to sell one of his Pool defenders. It’s easy enough to throw mud looking at a 4 GW window, it’s where you end up at the end of the season that counts.

    Martinez (4.0)
    Robbo Chilwell KWP (Lewis, Mitchell)

Out of interest why you not keen on Brewster? I’m thinking the opposite and he’ll be gold at 4.5 esp with the right games rotated with cheapo mid as it frees up loads of cash?

I am a Swansea fan and whilst he scored goals for us last season, was our main focus and had great service from the likes of Andre Ayew, Wayne Routledge & Connor Gallagher, his all round play was not great.

I don’t think he will find it easy in a struggling SU team, if he actually starts at all for the first 5 game weeks.

I never said that, but Brewster is an out and out striker so is competing with McGoldrick, McBurnie and Sharp.

Not sure he will do well in a two up top and he has only played as a loan striker at Swansea, not as a partnership.

I will be surprised if he starts for a few weeks, but I am sure that is not what you want to hear 😉

Maybe he will start, but I watched most of his games last season and I don’t think he is ready for the PL.

He´s gonna go straight into that starting 11, you dont spend a club record fee on a striker to not play him when your team scored 1 goal in 4 matches...

that is exactly what Sheff Utd did last season with McBurnie as their record £20 mill (ish) fee striker - didn’t start a game until game week 4.

It’s the international break and Brewster would hardly have trained with the team.

It’s just my opinion, but will wait and see before committing my precious 3rd striker position to someone who may not start for a few games when we have 6.5 (ish) or less for Wilson, Watkins, Bamford, Maupay, Antonio, Robinson etc

I'd expect him to play regularly, but there is a risk that if you build a team around him there's nowhere to run to if he doesn't, without 2 transfers anyway. Just a thought. If you can stretch up to Maupay, Watkins or Antonio then you have a bit more flexibility. Having Brewster in doesn't half upgrade the rest though!

    Hey all,

What are people's thoughts on the best 2 defenders with a £9m budget. Likely to be benched most weeks but could be called upon with all the COVID cases currently coming in. Currently thinking KWP and Dallas as Mitchel looks like he might drop off soon.

Keen to hear people's thoughts or is it worth having Mitchell sat in the 3rd bench spot as is rock bottom price and doesn't matter about that 3rd sub?

I think the wealth of cheap and mid-priced forwards this season is hindering the use of Brewster up top. Most managers want to play 3 up top until the points dry up. Ings, Jimenez, Maupay, DCL, Wilson, Bamford, Watkins, Antonio.....

    DCL, Maupey, (Brewster)
    0,3 ITB

    or

    Martinez (Forster)
    Lamptey, Robertson, Dallas, (Konsa), (KWP)
    Salah, KDB, Grealish, Son, (Soucek)
    DCL, Maupey, Wilson
1,2 ITB (could upgrade to a 5,7 defender or save it for Pulisic later on)

Leaning towards 3-4-3. James' trip to Colombia could be an issue, and not sure I would want double Everton attack long-term.
    Thoughts?

Given you'll probably never captain a defender which would you think gets most points over a season?

    TAA, 4.5, 4.5

    -OR-

3x 5.5m attacking defenders like Chilwell, Reguilón, and Semedo

Defenders' transfers are not as usual as mids or strikers but cant keep the same defenders for the whole season. TAA's ownership is too high for my taste and chasing defenders' attacking points is like gambling. A 4.5 AVL defender like Konsa can score more points than TAA in a random GW and ruin any plan. I d say chasing the fixtures for defence makes much more sense than the attack, but this season cs points seem close to disappear. For me no defender this season is worth more than 5.5, so something like 5.5, 5, 5, 4.5, 4.5 seems ok for defence rotation

If you think TAA cant be similar to last season, 210 points, more like 150-160 points Im sure he is not worth it. For now clean sheet seems more difficult, so I can see 3xsolid attacking defenders would be good. Dallas/Ayling might be gold in a few weeks, very cheap and attacking. It can change for sure but if I were on WC maybe just Chilwell and then cheaper.

Its a lot easier to double up on 5.5s compared to the Liverpool duo without crippling your team. Feel like Chilwell and Reguilon could both get 140+ points each, Trent/Robbo 180 points.

Tempted to go Chilwell, Bellerin, and Reguilon on my WC.

I’d be tempted to WC. You need to get rid of one of Sterling/KDB, the three premiums are killing your team

    How's my WC looking?

    Martinez // Steer
Robertson, Chillwell, Saiss // KWP, Mitchell
Salah, KDB, Son, Rodriguez // Stephens
    DCL, Maupay, Wilson

    Wildcard .
    Martinez Forster
    Saiss Chilwell Mitchell Lewis Dallas
    Son KDB Salah Grealish Stephens
    Kane Wilson Dcl
    Nothing in bank.

    Any thoughts?

How many and which big hitters - 9.0 and above, would you have in your team now ?

I assume you may have 3 of them to keep some balance in the team (Or do you disagree?), so I would go with Kane, Son and Salah. Don't really think that KDB/Sterling, being also 11.5!, should significantly (If at all) outcore these 3 guys for now.

There’s a big difference between Son and KDB price wise.

Work out your captaincy options for the next few and go from there. I don’t think you need any city until GW11.

Not sold on James Rod just yet.
Also I think the big points are to be found up the field this season rather than in defense.
