How underlying statistics can help cut through variance of FPL this season

It has been the most remarkable start to a Fantasy Premier League season in recent memory and arguably the hardest to predict accurately. So what now for FPL managers?

There has been a bucket-load of goals, an abundance of penalties, and yet so many of us are struggling to gain real traction in the Fantasy rankings.

As each team has come into the campaign with different preparations, and some even starting on a Blank Gameweek has hampered transfer progress for Fantasy managers and robbed us of easy access to consistent trends.

But the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area holds the key for isolating these from the perspective of underlying statistics.

Delving deeper into the data yields greater clarity on the reliable trends for our FPL sides going forward as we try to pinpoint our transfers and potential wildcard plans for Gameweek 5 and beyond…

I think the effect of Adrian in goal will push the defensive line back making attacking returns a bit tougher or they continue with the high line and continue conceding. I would wait and see how they get on to a usually blunt Blades attack.

I did. No defenders amongst the 10 players with most points. Going medium to low priced for the time being. If it changes I’ll reconsider.

No. Still think TAA and Robbo are worth it. Robertson is now the better pick imo. Very attacking and could have scored against Villa if he had better finishing.

How do I get taa and robbo together
      this week ditch them.
It's not how to play the game

I agree, but I do think Adrian in goal has to be taken into account... he looked horrendous and TAA doesn't look up to speed. Robbo on his own is enough now I think.

I sold Liverpool defence with an eye to get one back after the Everton game - that's still my plan!

They're very attacking, will still keep clean sheets, and have arguably the two defenders who are most likely to score 20+ points in a GW

      1. OverTinker

Second to Robertson going on past 4 GWs. He's taken away a lot of corners and indirect freekicks from him.

I’m keeping Trent but have gone off the idea of doubling up, not while Adrián is in goal anyway. I also think Robertson is in danger of getting flogged over the international break with him being the Scotland captain and Tierney now being out.

Keep, they will still be the top scoring defenders outscoring all midfielders at their price range, the disaster against Aston Villa is an anomaly, and even a game vs Everton might prove all the doubters wrong. They are still beasts with big attacking potential, and will be amongst the top of CS list in the end as well.

I own Robertson and Van Dijk. Happy to keep Rob, but would ditch the double-up if I was on WC.
I don't really see the hurry in using a FT for getting VVD out.

Look at Liverpool's defensive record in the last 2 seasons.

They go on streaks of conceding and streaks of clean sheets. When they start getting clean sheets, get their defenders, regardless of fixtures.

      Simple.

I’ve been a strong proponent of double and even triple Pool defense the last 2-3 years.

The last 2 years, Pool kept a majority of their clean sheets as the middle of the season approached (~Gws 10-20). I remember last year, it still took a month for cleanies to come after Alison returned.

Pool have a great fixtures run beginning in GW 9 which will hopefully coincide with Alison returning.

Even with goals flying in and cheap strikers hauling, I’m more confident with a Robbo+ TAA than 6.5-7.5 million attackers as I trust the pedigree of the Pool fullbacks.

Currently on WC now and my head says to ditch TAA + Robbo until after the play City but have a feeling the double up will stay in my 11 the entire season

They got 3 Out of 8 CS when Adrian played last season. Although 3 out of that 8 were Chelsea, Arsenal and another top 6 team which I am not remember

      Hold.
If you got them, keep them. Good potential for attacking returns even if CS potential reduced due to Adrian
If you don't have them, not worth ripping your team up to get them in.
Wait for the keeper to return and fixtures to ease / crowds return

Play Saiss or bring in Chilwell for James for a -4:

    A) Saiss (lee)

Heard some people say they're getting Maupay now and will switch to Antonio GW8, Antonio does have Fulham GW8 but even Maupay has Burnley who look like serious relegation candidates.. still a while to go but doesn't that look like a sideways move?

That could backfire for sure. I’m looking to do Jimenez to Antonio that week and will probably make him captain, I think it’s justifiable given the fixture swings for those teams.

Thought about this move too, then thought I might just get Antonio now and save the transfer. No one can defend and he's capable of scoring anytime, plus he's better than Maupay.

Not a Wolves fan but Semedo does seem like the best pick from their defense. Saiss, Marcal and Ait Nouri are rotation risks. Coady is safe but never scores and rarely gets bonus points. Boly is the bonus points magnet if they get a clean sheet. Semedo is the most attacking and should be very nailed so I'd go with him.

        1. Patron

thank you very much Aapoman! So u think even Saiss is at rotation risk? Anyways Im for wingbacks that can provide assists every game rather than CBs that can score once in 10 games.

            • 10 Years

Marcal can play wingback or LCB so that makes Saiss' position a little more uncertain. Still think he will get good amount of playing time but wouldn't be surprised to see him sit on the bench also. Coady, Boly and Semedo should be as nailed as it can get. If I had the funds/option I'd definetly go for Semedo in Wolves defense.

yea very true...maybe going double villa is too much... change Grealish to a lower priced mid and upgrade one of my 4.5 defenders?

well double villa is too much for me, if its between everton and villa i would go for everton assets. Also, I would strengthen attack a bit.

If people have kept Werner for this long and already taken 0.2 in price falls, why bother removing him for a hit especially? Soton his most favourable fixture to date...

His positioning and runs have been great, just hasn’t received those through balls due to the deep lying defences he’s played. Soton’s high line will be perfect for him... he’s due

pens and a better player and soon going to be 7.9 !

Taking 1 penalty doesn't mean that he's the main taker, probably only to boost his confidence. If DCL keep on scoring then higher chance that he's gonna be the taker so he can contend the top scorer's spot

      1. Emiliano Sala
        • 7 Years

By having richarlison and james I will most certainly have the penalty taker if siggy is not on the pitch I suppose.

        100% B.
Villa will score more goals than Newcastle and have much better creativity to supply striker. Also, it is far too risky to have 2 non-playing cheapies in defence. Just need 1 defender to miss out for any reason and you are playing with 10 men.

  26. Arteta
    • 8 Years
    3 years, 5 months ago

    Leno
    Bellerín - Luiz - Magalhães - Tierney
    Partey - Xhaka
    Pépé - Ceballos/Willian - Saka
    Aubameyang

It's debatable but I think this is the strongest possible line up after switch from 3-4-3 to another system. Arteta can be flexible with formations and players. Saliba will be eased in this season so Luiz stays in for now. Lacazette has been reliable goal scorer so far but I'd still like to see Aubameyang up front and some creative players behind him. Solid bench with second half subs and changes can also make the big difference during the game itself.

Heres an interesting one.. To get all my defenders playing and some flexibility (ie not 2 x 4.0 .. with 0.2 ITB) I can drop 3 defenders at 4.4, what do you think

    A) (mitchell + ferguson 4.0) Ayling , walker peters , chilwell (+0.2ITB) ... this would be changed to B

    B) (mitchell) cooper (leeds), jermal lewis (new), jack robinson (SHU), chilwell

    what do you think?

You're betting with no premium defender, could work for 2-3 GWs but probably not for long term.

At a glance, looks like chance of clean sheets is low but statistic said that out of 38 games in the first 4 GWs , there are 16 clean sheets so it's around 42% of games (almost half)

After a while, if clean sheets increasing, bigger chance for premium defender to enjoy the benefit of it and teams like Leeds, Newcastle, or Sheffield (now) probably harder to have clean sheets
