How underlying statistics can help cut through variance of FPL this season

It has been the most remarkable start to a Fantasy Premier League season in recent memory and arguably the hardest to predict accurately. So what now for FPL managers?

There has been a bucket-load of goals, an abundance of penalties, and yet so many of us are struggling to gain real traction in the Fantasy rankings.

As each team has come into the campaign with different preparations, and some even starting on a Blank Gameweek has hampered transfer progress for Fantasy managers and robbed us of easy access to consistent trends.

But the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area holds the key for isolating these from the perspective of underlying statistics.

Delving deeper into the data yields greater clarity on the reliable trends for our FPL sides going forward as we try to pinpoint our transfers and potential wildcard plans for Gameweek 5 and beyond…

Loads of managers thinking of getting rid of Liverpool defense after one nightmare .

Every season is different. Rather spend funds up front. That doesn't mean those 3 are bad picks, it's just a different strategy

It doesnt have to do with stats only. Their first goalie is out, and easy to blame the number of goals against them on this

No one (hopefully) thinks they won’t be back at the top averaging over the season but are they worth using up the funds now? That’s a bigger question and justifiably some are going without FOR NOW (big disclaimer!)

    Morning gents

    On WC:

    A) 3-4-3/ 4-4-2
    Martinez, Forster
    Chilwell, ROBBO, SEMEDO, DALLAS, Mitchell
    Salah, Son, Rodriguez, GREALISH, BISSOUMA
    Kane, DCL, MAUPAY

    B) 3-5-2/ 3-4-3
    Martinez, Forster
    Chilwell, KWP, SAISS, COOPER, Mitchell
    Salah, Son, Rodriguez, KDB, SOUCEK
    Kane, DCL, BREWSTER

Currently on A but is the weaker defence and Brewster in B worth it to get in KDB now?

    Thanks!

That’s what my gut says but until just before I hadn’t managed to put together a draft with Kane, Son, DCL, KDB, Salah, JRod. So now it’s made me think!

I'm also on a WC and am looking at a lineup very similar to A. By having the same midfield I can have a much more balanced squad overall.

I am thinking of swapping Kane to Aguero for GW10 to cover the City attack.

3 Villa and 2 West Ham if she was to WC now. Somehow I think if we give it another couple of weeks this won't be the case.

Bit of balance is needed, we're only a few games into the season.. It doesn't make the likes of Konsa and Cresswell good options. And just because Liverpool haven't been too solid in defense so far, doesn't mean we should be going without TAA and Robbo. Make no mistake, they will still both be the top 2 point scoring defenders in the game by the end of the season.

      Agree.
I find our community so reactive, and I am part of it of course. It could be that Adrian will lower Liverpool number of CS but it is not really only up to him, the whole defense was shambles against Villa.

      • 14 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

That may be true about TAA, but the point is still to have him when he’s actually scoring. If you brought him in from the start, it’s cost you a ton of points. Lots of cheaper options would have got you mire points and saved you 2 million to allow you to get Kane or Hamez or others. It’s not like you couldn’t just bring him in later when clean sheets looked more likely for Liverpool.

The sample size this season is too small to draw accurate conclusions using data. This was evident on the latest episode of FPL Black Box. Salah wasn’t even discussed as a captaincy option because of Villa’s “amazing” defensive record - but they had only played 10-man Sheffield United and a woeful Fulham side. Liverpool’s defence was just as leaky at this stage last season, then look what happened. Normality will be resorted after the international break with the transfer window closed. I think we’ll see fewer goals and less violent variance.

Please fix this; Wolves only scored 2 goals in Gameweek 1, not 3.

Why are people using WC now? The ideal time would be GW8-10 when fixtures drastically shift negatively for Spurs and Wolves and turn amazing for City and Liverpool and to a lesser extent West Ham (Antonio and Soucek). The other option is to hold for the blanks and doubles around GW18

        1. thegaffer82
          • 12 Years
          3 years, 6 months ago

          We have transfers you know?

Between GW's 8-10 you can bring in 3 or 4 of those players - and even more if you are willing to take hits.

If you're team is a mess now, you should definitely WC to sort that out now. And, then use transfers to manage your team after that.

You yourself gave a 3 week period?

Also, I think you are stuck in the past RE fixtures. Fixtures are becoming more and more meaningless.

Wonder how many people removed ort benched Villa assets because they were playing Liverpool last week. In fact, someone in my mini-league benched Grealish.

If you are playing fixtures this year. Good luck. You'll need it!

Irbox, please adjust your tone away from the tone of a borderline internet troll, which is what you currently sound like. You are employing the classic traits of a forum troll - stating things with certainty, causing arguments, then backtracking and saying yes it's only your opinion but you don't need to say that.

The way you currently express yourself has a negative effect on the level of conversation on this forum.

I find it impossible to convey tone in text but well done if you can decipher that from semantics. You may not like my post style, however, that does not make me a troll so please do not comment as such. Cheers

        Brewster owners....

Is this the game week where we unleash him on our team? Or are we worried about a possible cameo and 1pter?

I'm very tempted to play him over Podence this week before benching him for the following three tough games after that.

There's loads of Mid's to choose from too?

So I could say why do you have Bissouma/Anguissa etc... when there's so many amazing mids?

Fact of the matter is, I want to have a 4.5 8th attacker. Brewster looks BY FAR the best option (if you can say that without him having played a minute's football)

Because you won’t play the 5th mid ever. I would bet any amount of money on 3 forwards outperforming 4-5 mids when factoring price and points

I get what you say and I have heard it before. But what you guys FAIL to see is this:

            1. He is a great option to rotate with a 5-6million 5th mid and thus enabling different tactical approaches interchanging between a 3-4-3 & 3-5-2 for example.

            2. On top of point 1, owning Brewster is a great route to own a premium striker (Kane, Aguero) and at the same time keeping your midfield heavy hitters.

It's a strategy and like any other, results will determine it's accuracy.

A bit sideways yeah. I think that Grealish could be a good long term move. Was thinking about doing Podence to Grealish myself, but I want to stick with Podence's good fixtures for some more GWs. I also think Bruno is going to deliver big points this season, despite ManU looking like shite atm. Any other way of getting in Son? He looks like the value-pick so far this season

Anyways, I think Biss is gonna get equal points to ASM. Might as well save the extra cash if he's mainly on your bench

Going without Salah is a recipe for disaster mate. Lose one of Son or Kane

Im gambling on the fact that those 2 (Kane and Son) both haul at various stages in the weeks ahead. I need to make up a bit of ground (like everyone else). Can get Salah in, in other ways though and have kept money back for it.

I'm seeing some debate come up about fixtures vs form again. We have this debate every year. Inevitably someone defies the fixtures and goes on a hot streak and then everyone says fixtures don't matter any more.

I don't think that's the case. I think what is the case, is that we are not evaluating the fixtures correctly.

Home and away advantage is much diminished this year, so I would amend the fixture ticker to give the home team a much slimmer advantage. A team's absolute strength is now a bigger determining factor.

Everton, Villa and West Ham off the back of their strong results should be given upgrades in terms of fixture difficulty, Sheffield United, Fulham, West Brom and Burnley given feeder status. The latter 4 are particularly good to target for defensive returns.

More trends will show, but once we can actually know who the good and bad teams are, we can work on our fixture tickers and target the bad ones.

Excellent post. Time-honoured FPL tactics don't suddenly go out the window just because of a short period of unusual results. With new information, you should adjust your beliefs by a proportionate amount, not by a disproportionate amount, and try to see how the new information fits with existing theory -- which says fixtures are quite important.
