Why impatience can be a virtue in Fantasy Football

Former FPL world champion Simon March discusses when the laissez-faire approach might not be the best one when it comes to Fantasy management.

I sometimes talk in these articles about what I see as the importance of patience as an attribute among Fantasy managers and, while I stand by those views, I’m going to use this article to confuse things a little and suggest that a lack of patience can also be a virtue among Fantasy Premier League bosses, in certain circumstances.

There’s an old Wall Street saying that goes: “Cut your losses and let your winners run.” That basically means: “Sell your losing shares and keep the ones that are making you a profit.” Applied to FPL, this principle would recommend that we sell the blanking or underperforming players and hold onto the ones who are scoring us points. This makes obvious intuitive sense; if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. However, following the ‘let your winners run’ principle too dogmatically can also backfire, and here’s why.

Our tendency as humans to not want to change something that is working is a fairly natural mindset. Even in the world of actual Premier League management, there is a commonly accepted maxim that you should ‘never change a winning team.’ Indeed, in FPL, it’s very difficult to get rid of a player who has been delivering for you. I’m almost certain that anyone who has played this game for any amount of time has, at least once, brought in a player for a set run of good fixtures and ended up keeping them long after that run had ended because they’d done well during that time. This is an example of ‘letting our winners run’.

Obviously, it’s difficult to justify getting rid of a player when they appear to be ‘in form’ but jumping off players at the right time can be as important as bringing them in at the right time in this game. To help illustrate why, consider the following.

Say you created a ‘dead team’ last season (i.e. one you make no changes to over the whole campaign) and all 11 of your starting players averaged 175 points – a very strong return per player that year (almost the equivalent of 11 x Andy Robertson). With captain points doubled, that would equal 2,100 points overall. Let’s be extra generous and chuck in another 50 points for choosing your captain extra well and another 100 points from your chips. That’s 2,250 points which, last season, would have got you approximately a 125k finish. Not bad by any means, but still about 100 points short of what would have been needed to break the aspirational top 10k.

The point here is that, in FPL, you can make really good player and captain choices and still not trouble the top 100k. To do really, really well, you’ll also need to transfer players in and out in an effective manner, to exploit their peaks and to avoid their lows.

So, short of being extremely lucky, how do you do this? Obviously none of us have a conclusive answer (yet) but we each have our own ways of determining a player’s expected return. Some of us, for example, look at fixtures and assume that players will score better in easier than harder matches. Others look at underlying stats with the belief that, if a player is delivering high numbers in a certain attribute, they are worth investing in. Alternatively, we sometimes bring a player in because they are, perhaps temporarily, playing out of position and their scores benefit as a result of that.

The key thing here is that, whatever your objective means of predicting player performance, if you believe it works, then you should, logically, stick to it both with respect to bringing players in, and in moving them out. If your system is successful in predicting that a player will score well, then it stands to reason that it should also be successful in predicting when that player will stop scoring as well. When this happens, it is time to move the player out. The temptation, as discussed, will be to ‘let your winners run’ but the consequences of this may not only be to hold on to a player whose performance subsequently dips but, also, missing out on the opportunity to bring in a player who may outperform them.

So, in summary, while patience in FPL is a virtue when the conditions are right for the player in question to do well, impatience can be equally virtuous when those conditions change to their detriment. Knowing when to make changes is only half the battle; FPL managers need also to be willing to execute those changes and that might mean transferring out previously high performers.

As Charlie Chaplin once said (probably about FPL): “This is a ruthless world, and one must be ruthless to cope with it.”

Simon is a former FPL world champion, claiming the coveted price in 2014/15. But there is more to this man than one season of good fortune. Since 2009, Simon has finished in the top 7k four times, only ending up outside the world’s top 60k once in an 11-campaign career.

Worth bringing Bowen in now (instead of Townsend or Trossard)? His "tougher" matches may not be so tough?

He looks maybe better than Townsend, but his goals group together when WHU are already winning.
He seemed to do well when a ball was crossed (to change attacking sides). Very much a wing, offside trap breaking forward to me.
He looks good, but with risk.
Creswell does some of what he does, too.

I think CRY draw isn't just better than WHU, but looks very good full stop.
Plays probably in a similar way to Bowen, maybe not as good, but we also know him better. Why I feel Vardy made sense over Werner (in that regard).

I also very much like Trossard, but see Brighton in a different light to the above. Some reservations about them still.

      I'd go Townsend.

Vardy straight to Kun ( if back) or Kane might be as good as using 2 transfers to get Son.

The Martinez love is very blinkered. He won’t be saving penalties every week and it is still ultimately Aston Villa.

He (was) 4.5, villa kept a decent amount of clean sheets last year and he's a good goalkeeper, no brainer rather than blinkered

Martinez has always been a quality keeper, just never given the chance.

Think back to when Fabianski was 4.5m. Everyone had him in their team because, even though he was at a poor side, he was getting the save points, kept the odd clean sheet and saved the even rarer penalty.

Can see it going exactly the same way. And that's why people have him, not because of one penalty.

No goalkeeper will be saving penalties every week, and I don't think anyone believes or owns a keeper for that purpose. He will get you some steady points over the season for 4.5, probably the same as McCarthy at the end of the season. At the moment Martinez is going up in price, so that decides it for me.

While it’s quiet around here hoping for some feedback on this team.
I will probably not make a move for GW6 and have will have 2FT for GW 7.
It’s mainly going to be a 451 so feel like I might need to strength the defence.

I would look at the following moves to get another starter up top in your team ... Brewster & Davies is not a great bench if Brewster is eased into the Sheff Utd team and remember if DCL gets injured you will auto sub one of them

        Barnes to Podence (or similar)
        Davis to Watkins

Appreciate the reply as always HFT those moves would be hard for me to do just because I just lost Podence for a hit to do
          Werner and Podence to
          Brewster and Son
But for sure Barnes is the one that will make way and if I lose faith in the 451 those moves could be good.

It’s tough and every week we could do 3 or 4 changes, I am likewise struggling to get it right

I don’t think though I could ever cope with two 4.5 forwards on my bench that may not start as it’s too many eggs in one basket - hopefully Brewster nails down a starting position but I don’t think he will for a few game weeks (Swans fan and he does not have a good all round game and I think will struggle in PL this season)

            GL 🙂

I don’t think he will start and will be surprised if he does.

He may start though, but against this is he isn’t match fit because he hasn’t played for ages (except a few friendlies for Liverpool), would not have trained with Sheff Utd due to International Break, doesn’t know their systems ... also McBurnie (previous record signing) & Sharp are available as alternative to the two who have been starting up top so it’s not as if there are no options

Hopefully Kepa has worked out his mistakes, but Azpil & Chilwell starting for James & Alonso makes Chelsea a much better defensive unit and better for Kepa 😉

A nice rest for Chilwell from international duty (if he was even going to play) is great too 🙂

The stats show Brighton are better defensively than the results have shown and he is a one of the best attacking defenders in the league. And finally it’s fun owning him.
Yellow flagged I think and some with Ryan might not want to double up but it did not stop me getting him,

They said they wouldn't mind TAA or Robbo not keeping CE.. they bought them for attacking return, anything else is bonus

Now they're scrambling to ditch them already. Because Adrian is a threat to their attacking return?

              Van Dijk to 4.8 defender
              Or

Generally I like to wait until the fixtures become congested in December to use my wildcard but I am thinking of using it now. The changes would be:
Out: Ings; Mitro; Barnes: Podence; KWP; Burr
In: DCL; Antonio; Rodriguez; ASM; Lamptey; Ferguson/Branthwaite (either for the anticipated starts when he is fit again or the extra 0.1)

The thing is, KWP has been getting CSs, Barnes is playing well, Podence is a good player in an advanced position albeit in a team without form, Ings is a reliable source of points and Southampton have form and fixtures at the moment. I am also doing well with an OR of around 200k and have green arrowed every week so far.

On the other hand, is there even a rush? Everton have Liverpool next, which I expect to be low scoring, and Antonio's fixtures don't really change until GW8.

Hit the wildcard button or leave it?

Yeah I don't think so either. I just like the team better with the WC. I could probably get the same team (wouldn't bother trading Burr out though) in time for Antonio's fixture shift 1FT at a time too.

the most sideways WC I think I have ever seen and seems to be based upon players that scored points last week

        1. The Big Fella
          • 7 Years
          3 years, 6 months ago

Definitely very sideways and I have done well so far this season precisely because I have not been kneejerking. However, I don't think it is just players that scored last week. Everton are probably the most in form team in the league, Antonio is in anticipation of their fixture swing and ASM is a great player. I actually had him from the start, as I expected him to do well with Wilson and Fraser joining as it would give him more space, but then he got injured so I sold him for Podence..... who then got injured. Newcastle's fixtures swing for the better after this gameweek and are also playing well.

I am in a similar position to you and used the same argument to play my WC this week too, but then decided not too.

            I did
            Lascelles to Chilwell
            Mahrez to Son

Would make 6 more moves because not happy with Jim, Havertz, Bernardo, Taylor, Soucek (fixtures) & TAA to Robbo ... but I am better off using my WC when I actually ‘need’ to rather than when I ‘want’ to

That said, I have DCL & James Rod
