Football Index: The top players of the new Premier League season so far

Sponsored by Football Index

With international football taking centre stage over the next week, we thought it would be a suitable time to check on the stand-out Premier League performers in Football Index (FI) for In-Play and Match Day Dividends.

For those of you who are new to the concept, Football Index is a kind of stock market where people use real money to bet on football.

Those betting with Football Index buy shares in individual players whose value can rise or fall depending on their performance both on and off the field.

Read our introductory guide to betting with Football Index here

In-Play and Match Day Dividends also offer a possible way to make money and give Football Index more of a Fantasy Football feel because they are based on each players’ on-pitch performance.

In-Play Dividends

In-Play Dividends are nice and simple. If a footballer you have bet on scores or assists, or your goalkeeper keeps a clean sheet, you get paid (for the first 30 days you own a share).

Match Day Dividends

Match Day Dividends are slightly different in that they are based on the underlying data that drives a lot of Fantasy games these days, such as shots, chances created and interceptions – most of which can be found in our Premium Members Area.

For example, a goal will earn a player 45 points as part of their Match Day score, whilst a red card sees them deducted 30 points.

On each day that there is a football match in any of the eligible competitions, Football Index ranks all the participating footballers by their Match Day score – and the leading players win dividends for that day.

More details are available here.

Even though domestic football is on hiatus for a fortnight, there are still In-Play and Match Day Dividends dished out in the UEFA European Championship qualifiers, as seen in the above image.

It’s the Premier League that is the main focus of this article, however, as we look at how some of the star performers from the English top flight have been rewarded in Football Index in the opening month of 2020/21.

In-Play Dividends

Football Index rolled out a special offer until the end of September in which In-Play Dividends were multiplied by a whopping five times for every eligible fixture.

As a result, the Premier League players who filled their boots with attacking returns in the first month of 2020/21 were amply rewarded in Football Index.

Harry Kane‘s six attacking returns in the opening three Gameweeks brought him 60p in In-Play Dividends, with his three at Old Trafford last Sunday earning him a further 6p.

With midfielders and forwards getting 2p for either a goal or orthodox assist, it doesn’t really matter whether they are finding the net themselves or setting up a teammate to score when it comes to In-Play Dividends.

The table below looks at how often Premier League players delivered a goal or assist in 2019/20 – although, as we’ve seen to a dramatic extent over the last four weeks, no two seasons are ever the same.

A player not only has to produce a stellar performance to be in with a chance of winning Match Day Dividends, they also have to beat the competition.

On match days where there are lots of fixtures across Europe, this can be a tall order – but far from impossible, as James Rodriguez proved when collecting both the Top Midfielder and Star Player accolades on Saturday.

A breakdown of his superb display against Brighton can be seen in the gallery below:

Betting on players who are in action on quieter match days, such as Monday evening, could be a good tactic with regards to Match Day Dividends: Jorginho and Kevin De Bruyne, for example, both claimed the Top Midfielder accolades on September 14th and 21st respectively, when fewer fixtures were happening elsewhere.

Why did people buy a 5.5m player (Podence) if they were going to sell him after one blank?

    1. Zimo
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 5 months ago

Because they didn't think things through and saw a potential bargain and jumped at it like people going with Brewster now.

      1. Cok3y5murf

And what's changed? So he's not a bargain because he blanked once?

Now they can see he's not nailed, which they convinced themselves was not true or didn't matter, but now they can't ignore the evidence.

What evidence? He missed a game due to injury. He played 70 minutes in the last one. 70 minutes for 5.5 isn't good enough?

I am by no means calling Podence a good asset. That remains to be seen as he's far from a proven asset. Just trying to understand the thinking behind people investing in a 5.5m mid and selling after one blank. Because it looks like they don't know what they're doing and are just kneejerking.

I think he is a good option for £5.5. Got him on a WC a few weeks back and intend to give him a couple more. He is a rotation risk though and I would be looking to get rid if he doesn't deliver in the next 2 "green" fixtures.

With Traore now up front, it's apparent that Nuno will only play at most 2 of Traore, Podence, and Neto at a time.

I'll let people who did actually buy Podence defend their decision themselves rather than doing it for them. I agree with you that it was a trap that people should have avoided.

The obvious needs no defending. 5.5 is a bargain for a Wolves attacker.

Nothing's changed but he was always a crap pick. People rectifying their mistake instead of falling for sunk cost bias

    2. HurriKane
      • 11 Years
      3 years, 5 months ago

Because he is a rotation risk with Neto and Adama.

Plus wolves looks out of sorts in attack at the moment

For 0.5 more you can get Trossard or Pereira who are much better options

      1. Cok3y5murf
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

        A. He's not been rotated yet.

        B. Even if he is, those who got him would've known that it could happen. And he's 5.5. So why did they get him in the first place?

Wolves also didn't look out of sorts in the first 2 games. So just keep changing based on recency bias?

    3. Brosstan

That realization can't possibly come after one game. One blank = garbage pick is just points-chasing.

Well I never brought him in as he was always a risk, unproven player in an unsettled side. Plenty of options for Nuno that will have him fighting hard for game time. Don't see the point in owning him instead of Soucek for instance, who's nailed and a goal threat

Pre-Villa game the "template" was Robbo + TAA and everyone was scrambling to get them both in on WC. The Villa game was unfortunate but I can't see that happing again this season. I would stick as you got them both for a reason.

    Gw1- blank
Gw2- Sold for Martial. Boom 2 goals vs Spurs
    Gw3- 1 goal vs Burnley
Gw4- Back in on Wildcard / Blank

Gw5- Out for Watkins to fund Son move

That is my exact love affair with Son. Some players just ain't happening for you. Watkins is in form and Ings doesn't get a lot of deliveries due to lack of creativity in that side. I can't advise you either way though as it could easily go wrong

I did Werner and Burke to Son and Brewster as my 2FTs and switched to a 3-5-2. If anything, your transfers sound even better on paper. I would go for it. Have you got Salah? Even though I have all 3 of Salah, KDB, and Son I think I am going with Mo next week.

Cheers mate. Got Salah but everton are no pushovers no?

Their underlying defensive stats are strong so far despite having Pickford in goal.

Son has been electric form and an inform Kane next to himi feel like he's the prine captiency option next gw

Can see both teams scoring in that game and I fancy Salah to be on the scoresheet for Pool. I could of course be wrong. I haven't capped Salah a single time this season and now I am leaning towards just perma-capping him and be done with it. Salah would be well rested for that game as well.

Yes, on top of subscriptions for Sky Sports, BT Sports and Amazon Prime.

£15 per match which goes to the PL clubs to make up for loss of matchday revenue.

I could have almost got on board with it had it been set up as a charitable endeavour to help protect struggling clubs in the lower leagues...

That is the straw that will break the camel's back.

They already jacked up my bill after the lockdown discount ended to €133 per month here in Ireland.
Time for a serious market correction for the Premier Leauge clubs and their over payed players.

The league is a mere empty shell without the fans and i for one am struggling to watch the games as i just don't find it all that entertaining without the buzz of the fans.I would probably get a decent dodgy box for €133.

At least we're going back to a normal fixture program. Televising them all one by one was painfully tedious for fpl.

It's not like you need to watch all of them just because they are televised. At least that way you get the option to choose what you want to watch.

The other way to look at is, if your team's game is not televised then paying £15 to watch it helps your club. I'm happy to do this as a supporter.

Couldn't agree more. That useless turd Ozil can use some of his £350k a week. I'm sure there's plenty left even after a Gunnersaurus bail out.

To be honest, I'd rather give the £15 to a beggar, who doesn't actually even need the money, rather than the poorly managed football clubs who will just waste the money anyway.

Anyone else think Ings looks stifled by Adams constant presence in the side? When Long plays, Ings takes up more advanced positions as Long does more grafting and is less of a poacher. But when Trashdams plays Ings is shifted out left and isn't as much in central goal scoring positions.. for the benefit of Adams so he can miss ten big chances a game.. Really poor again from Hassenfraud who is so, so overrated on here.

Premier League games not selected for broadcast in October will be available to fans on a pay-per-view basis.

The five fixtures per round not already picked to be shown live, will be available on BT Sport Box Office or Sky Sports Box Office, priced at £14.95.

I think the main reason for him being that kind of player is set pieces.

I have Saiss and Ayling plus one of these three. Was on Reece James but if Mendy is out, he is just too iffy.

He shares the direct FKs with James but not on corners and indirect FKs which is where a lot of his assists came from in the past.

Why are there season ticket holders this season? Is it because people purchase it for multiple seasons at once or are some fans willing to purchase them just to support the clubs?

I didn't realize there would be any this season until I saw the need for them to be compensated with the PPV in place.

I suppose if you have a season ticket you might be inclined to keep it because if you left it go you would be put to the back of the queue if/when you wanted it back.

Live streams of the clubs matches via the clubs website, priority to match tickets if they become available as the season progresses and probably to support your club as well.

Why not? Jimenez will probably blank again and Kane just needs to get an assist to break even if he gets 1 bonus too with the assist.

What makes you think Jimenez will probably blank again? He doesn't blank very often, hasn't blanked 3 games in a row in PL. It doesn't necessarily mean he'll get returns this match but shows how consistent he is.

Also West Ham have much better defensive stats compared to Leeds.

He blanked every freaking time I relied on him, as a fantasy football asset or in betting slip, and he scor s named every time I do not own him.

I think it might be because Wolves don't tend to destroy weaker teams as people expect but just gets the job done with 1 or 2 goals, which is why Jimenez isn't a good option; unpredictable returns and usually single return in a match.

However his consistency means that his returns are better than most other assets if you hold him long term.

He hasn't been looking like he'll score. Im basing it on eyetest really but i feel another blank incoming. I'm switching to richarlison after leeds match anyways so i hope he gives me a parting scoring gift.
