International Football

How many minutes did FPL assets play over the international break?

A busier-than-usual international break has come to an end and the Premier League players who were in action for their respective homelands have gradually returned to England ahead of Gameweek 5.

Some nations crammed in a triple-header of games over the last fortnight, with a handful of Fantasy assets taking part in all three of their country’s matches.

Fatigue is certainly a concern ahead of the Premier League’s resumption, be it through on-field exertions on the continent or due to long-haul flights back from further afield.

In this article, we’ll round up how many minutes each FPL asset clocked up while on international duty.

MOST MINUTES PLAYED

To the best of our knowledge, these were the players who racked up the most minutes over the international break:

FURTHEST TRAVELLED AND LATEST RETURNEES

Most of the matches that took place over the international break, including the friendlies involving the African teams, Mexico and Japan, were staged in Europe.

There were a number of World Cup qualifiers held in South America, however, so the likes of James Rodriguez (£7.8m), Richarlison (£7.9m), Roberto Firmino (£9.3m) and Alex Telles (£5.5m) have had to endure long-haul flights back from their respective countries after being in action in the early hours of Wednesday morning (UK time).

Everton and Liverpool, of course, meet in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off at Goodison Park.

The South American countries weren’t the last ones in action, however, with a host of European teams – including England, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Italy and France – contesting Nations League games on Wednesday evening.

The dates for all of the international games in October are available here.

CLUB-BY-CLUB ROUND-UP

The team-by-team guide below breaks down the minutes that each player has played per international match over the last week or so, with a total given at the end.

Any players with an asterisk next to their names withdrew from their countries’ squads either at the outset or midway through the international break or picked up an injury at the back-end of it.

We’ll have further details on any lingering fitness concerns in our pre-Gameweek 5 team news round-up on Friday.

There's a big lack of Kane/Son here, aside from that fine.

To avoid burning the FT, it might be worth addressing Justin now and getting a longer term starter in. Otherwise you could do Sterling > Son if he is out.

fair. tough to fit Son/Kane and a city attacker.
For Liverpool defenders it is a real risk

1 FT, £1.2m ITB, don’t know whether to just roll it with all the uncertainty and the fact I’ve got some okay bench fixtures if I need them. What do you think?

    McCarthy
    James Saiss Taylor (Lamptey Mitchell)
    Salah Son KDB Greenwood Podence
    DCL Jimi (Mitro)

Surely Greenwood starts despite poor form with Martial out? Otherwise I’d do Greenwood > Pulisic. Podence and James also a head ache.

I'd be tempted to take a punt on Solly March, nice underlying numbers, decent fixtures ahead, interestingly got a higher xg than Trossard over last 4 GW and similar xgi overall. Also has 13 pen box touches to Trossard 11 too and taken 8 corners. Not saying he's a better pick than Trossard though who id prefer out of the two (more SOT) but at 5.0 I think there's quite a lot to like about Solly March.

    Most unwarranted bandwagon so far?

For me it's either Pulisic or Lamptey. Pulisic picked on post-restart form (which we've seen in many cases doesn't matter); Lamptey's highest score is 4 points and he seems to have fitness issues every week.

Exactly! Resemblance uncanny. Then I realised I have doubled up on an attack that gets about 1 per game.

Wolves in general worry me. Any time a team talks about changing their attacking identity, it's not a good sign.

With Werner, Havertz and Ziyech I can’t see pulisic getting many pts as it’ll be shared out. Also takes players time to get up to full speed. Brighton are too leaky imo and it’s not worth getting a defender purely for assists.

No, and I lost 30 mins of my life watching Gabby's post match analysis in the process ha! The clips were cut tho, so he may well have said it, but I couldn't find it.

Thing is, the conversation could have taken place pre Barkley signing anyway, so I'm really not sure.

I noticed that conversation on FFS the other day & took some time watching the interview on you tube myself. Lots of positive chat about Jack but no mention of pens as you say. I messaged Panda a couple of days later to see of he'd found it but no luck, was adamant he'd heard it said by Gabby though.

Definition of taking one for the team... good point about the conversation happening before Barkley. I've already committed to Grealish but would be a nice bonus if he were on penalties.

pros = in form team, good price and fixtures, opens up a midfield spot to replace Foden (wouldn't get Grealish)
cons = would partner Jimenez and DCL so stops me from getting Antonio unless Jimmy doesn't produce

I could be wrong but for 0.4 - 0.6m more, you could buy the likes of Maupay, Wilson, Antonio etc. who are all proven in the premier league. Right now, I would buy one of these and downgrade to Watkins once we are convinced that he’s the real deal.

I'm a pretty average top 20k player last 5 years.

Played BB in GW1 this season so rank is boosted a bit by that but that was a strategic choice so I would make fewer decision based on value considerations later on in the season.

I remember Semedo coming off in his last game, assuming he's ok now since he isn't flagged?

    Thoughts for -4?

Werner, KDB, Foden --> Son, Kane, Grealish

      Nope, don't like it.

Werner, De Bruyne (if fit) and Foden all look decent options this week.

Hope so! If Chilwell out then Dave could move to LB and James plays.

Agree with this entirely - Chelsea have Sevilla and united away coming up soon so no need to risk Ben

Am I lining up correctly? Got a strong bench for possible Covid and IB injuries but does leave selection dilemmas. Captaining KDB got to work at some point, and if he's out Son will do!

Starting james over both Saiss and Lamptey seems strange.

He could easily come on as a sub if benched

    Hey all,

Mark and I recorded FPL BlackBox Episode 7 – Can we Trust in Spurs? - on Wednesday night and there's lots of ways you can watch / listen if you missed it.

The idea of FPL BlackBox is to reflect back on the mistakes we make during the season to try and become better managers.
