Son Heung-min the most-owned FPL asset in ‘template’ Wildcard squads

Son Heung-min‘s (£9.2m) second haul of 2020/21 inevitably led to a huge surge in demand, with just under two million more Fantasy Premier League managers recruiting the Korean midfielder ahead of Gameweek 5.

Son is indeed the most-owned player in both the top 10k and overall template Wildcard squads, featuring in over 80% of these teams in both instances.

CHECK YOUR LIVE FPL RANK HERE

The squads above are closely matched as one would expect, with only two differences: Callum Wilson (£6.5m) and James Justin (£4.7m) feature in the top 10k Wildcard template team, with Patrick Bamford (£5.8m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) taking their places in the overall set-up.

The top 10k Wildcarders have eschewed premium defenders above £6.0m, with both sets of managers also going with cheap options between the posts.

Over one in three FPL managers have now used their first Wildcards, with that figure down at around 25% for those inside the top 10k at the point of the Gameweek 5 deadline.

Around 60% of managers have yet to use a single chip in 2020/21, both within the top 10k and outside of it.

Over 10% of FPL bosses have used two or more of their chips, with the Triple Captain the next most-popular option after the Wildcard.

Back to Gameweek 5 and there’s a real split in terms of captaincy choices, particularly when we look at the overall picture.

Not one asset was backed with the armband by more than 18% of FPL managers, with Son narrowly the most-popular pick.

Within the top 10,000, the situation is markedly different.

Harry Kane (£10.6m) was handed the captaincy by almost one in two of these high-flying managers ahead of Spurs’ match against West Ham United.

Indeed, only Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) features in more of the top 10,000 teams than Kane – the in-form striker’s ownership is at 70.43% within the leading pack but down at 28.85% overall.

Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m) is an interesting inclusion in the midfield of around one in five squads in the top 10k.

One in four managers overall will be forced into a transfer if Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) is, as rumoured, ruled out for a long period of time.

A similar number still own Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m) despite the Belgian being red-flagged. Even at this early stage of the campaign, “ghost teams” will be starting to skew those overall figures.

Maybe it is time to run the Reeson strategy again? For those who don't what is that it is all 4.5 defenders and rotating them. Max 1 premium defender is allowed in certain periods.

He is the winner with the highest margin in the history of the game, just for the record.

    What do you think?

That's what I've been doing. TAA and a bunch of 4.5s allows me to have a front 7 of Son, Bruno, Salah, Podence, DCL, Ings and Mitro. Got 2.5 ITB from KdB -> Son so Mitro or Podence could be upgraded when needed.

I was in a similar position before WC this week. It might help to make a draft as if you were wildcarding and see how many players you would get rid of if you had unlimited transfers. You have a lot of players who *should* be good picks but for whatever reason they just aren't at the moment, or there are better alternatives at least. Jimenez is a good example. We know he's good but he's not performing for his price.

Do you still have your wildcard? If not, I'd probably prioritise Jimmy and Mitro out.

Bruno may actually be underrated in FPL terms. Most premiums blank a fair bit but you hold because they make up for it with massive hauls from time to time. But Bruno seems incredibly consistent and hardly ever blanks - as well as hauling. You could argue it's a disadvantage that he plays in a worse team than the likes of KDB, Sterling, Salah, Mane and maybe Kane depending on your opinion, but he also seems almost immune to the form of the team. Case in point, United have had a poor start to the season with 2 wins and 2 defeats yet he has 5 attacking returns and is averaging 7+ points per game. Add to that he will never be benched and he's cheaper than all the other premiums mentioned above (albeit Kane is only 0.1m more). Last season he was set and forget for me because I like consistency and I struggle to endure blanks from players like Sterling while waiting for massive 20 point hauls.

Assuming United perform better over the course of the season than they have in the first 4 games, could Bruno finish as the top FPL points scorer?

He is just so good and involved in everything they do going forward.

Many said he wouldn’t be able to sustain his stats back end of last season, but even without penalties he just looks like a points scorer if that makes sense.
My only doubt is United as a team, but glad I’ve kept faith with him until now, no City for me has paid off thus far.

      1. FPL_trail_runner

His underlying stats all point to this not being sustainable

Again today he scored a very low xG shot against a team with an injured goalkeeper

Ive said all year Rashford is the better pick

          • 7 Years

But he keeps delivering, doesn’t the old stat issue imply Vardy won’t keep up the points too? And he continues to break that barrier

If you watch him regularly he definitely has the feel of one of those stats-buster type players. As you say, he is involved in everything and very effective.

            Different.

Vardy has an xG of over a season of e.g around say 18 and usually outperforms it by a range within the models e.g +10% which if one factors in his better than average finishing fits

Bruno is not like this, his underlying data for many goals and assists is like i said the previous time we spoke about this relying on 1 in 100 shots from Martial or Rashford to the top corner from outside the box.

Its not sustainable and different to vardy. He will still score and assist just not on the scale he is currently doing.

He will either regress to lower points OR he may produce points in a different way e.g to set up easy tap ins - which he isnt doing curently that KDB does alot

Nobody has yet not fit the models

Not even Messi. Bruno wont either.

But the fact that he's outperformed his stats for months might mean there's something else at work. He takes up advanced positions, he's a good shooter, and can play some killer through balls.

Stats don't say everything. He certainly passes the eye test.

Stats say many of his assists are coming from chances with low probablity of the players scoring

Its the one metric we should trust.

The fact he is outperforming tells us its not sustainable.

What else could be at work?

He takes up advanced positions - then why isn’t his xG higher?

He’s a good shooter - OK, we can adjust for some expected overperformance

Can play some killer through balls - then why isn’t his xA higher?

I kind of get what you’re saying because he’s scored well for almost half a season now, but I’ve got no reason to believe Bruno is any different to the hundreds/thousands of other players on record. He hasn’t broken football. He’s on a very hot streak from open play and is padded by penalties.

It’s as simple as he’s just a very good and intelligent player.

Having said that I’m not engrossed enough to fully understand how xG and xA actually work so please excuse my ignorance with that.
I play this game from more of a gut/eye test perspective

My honest opinion here is i dont think you fully understand xG currently, I dont mean that as an attack on you in anyway , just think we are talking in circles.

This is not related to his intelligence as a player

I rate Bruno, he is amongst the best players in the league for sure.

However xA of say 0,05 means when he passed to whoever scored, that chance will only be scored 1 in 20 times in every match simulation that ever occured. Accounting for the best players who have played

This is nothing against Bruno, its just saying the points he is currently getting are from very low proability chances

You want your players to be getting tap in like goals , high xG and more likely to occur over and over again at a high rate.

Yes you’re correct, I don’t fully understand xG and xA, I think if I got too bogged down in the data I wouldn’t enjoy the game as much and would actually feel like I’m working!
I get more enjoyment from using my own gut feel but each to their own 🙂

I get your point, will be interesting to see how it pans out, his price of 10.5 certainly should be considered regardless of overperforming opinions too

      Hulk this!

I do think he's great value and deserves more discussion.

Can't see him outpointing Salah, Mane, Son, KDB, Sterling et al. Definitely not all of them

Because the threat he carries is not even close to any of the names mentioned.

Taking KDB as an example - he has similar open play goal threat and 1/3 of the assist threat. Both are on pens, and KDB is a better footballer. The odds are not stacked in Bruno’s favour.

At 10.5 he may not have to, and may come close

Difficult season with everyone’s price points

Holding might be a better game than transferring the boys that can haul any week

Really like the look of Mané and Liverpool, but who to lose for him?
    A) sterling
    B) Bruno
    C) hold
