Son Heung-min the most-owned FPL asset in ‘template’ Wildcard squads

Son Heung-min‘s (£9.2m) second haul of 2020/21 inevitably led to a huge surge in demand, with just under two million more Fantasy Premier League managers recruiting the Korean midfielder ahead of Gameweek 5.

Son is indeed the most-owned player in both the top 10k and overall template Wildcard squads, featuring in over 80% of these teams in both instances.

CHECK YOUR LIVE FPL RANK HERE

The squads above are closely matched as one would expect, with only two differences: Callum Wilson (£6.5m) and James Justin (£4.7m) feature in the top 10k Wildcard template team, with Patrick Bamford (£5.8m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) taking their places in the overall set-up.

The top 10k Wildcarders have eschewed premium defenders above £6.0m, with both sets of managers also going with cheap options between the posts.

Over one in three FPL managers have now used their first Wildcards, with that figure down at around 25% for those inside the top 10k at the point of the Gameweek 5 deadline.

Around 60% of managers have yet to use a single chip in 2020/21, both within the top 10k and outside of it.

Over 10% of FPL bosses have used two or more of their chips, with the Triple Captain the next most-popular option after the Wildcard.

Back to Gameweek 5 and there’s a real split in terms of captaincy choices, particularly when we look at the overall picture.

Not one asset was backed with the armband by more than 18% of FPL managers, with Son narrowly the most-popular pick.

Within the top 10,000, the situation is markedly different.

Harry Kane (£10.6m) was handed the captaincy by almost one in two of these high-flying managers ahead of Spurs’ match against West Ham United.

Indeed, only Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) features in more of the top 10,000 teams than Kane – the in-form striker’s ownership is at 70.43% within the leading pack but down at 28.85% overall.

Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m) is an interesting inclusion in the midfield of around one in five squads in the top 10k.

One in four managers overall will be forced into a transfer if Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) is, as rumoured, ruled out for a long period of time.

A similar number still own Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m) despite the Belgian being red-flagged. Even at this early stage of the campaign, “ghost teams” will be starting to skew those overall figures.

Thinking of getting rid of Trent after Sheff Utd to allow funds to bolster midfield. Crazy going without Pool defender?

    Possibly Trent > Chilwell

I’m very tempted to do the same. Looks like Van Dijk is going to be out for a while so Liverpool’s defence will be massively weakened. Can’t really justify a 7.5m defender who isn’t consistently getting clean sheets.

TAA —> Chillwell and then using the extra money for Justin —> Castagne for example seems very tempting

Chilwell is a season keeper because of attackig returns and the odd clean sheet, at his price point im not sure there is better value?

Fernandes is a season keeper because its seems literally everything Utd do is through him.

    Season keepers for me:

    Chilwell
    Robbo

Salah/Mane (honestly so close it comes to gut feeling)
    Fernandes
JRod (for his sheer value at price point)

    DCL
Kane (if fit) - at less than 10mill you have to have him.

    Agree?

          Time will tell

          His underlying data is better,

I regret not holding him longer. Had him for week 2 and 3, sold him before Spurs at home.

To save us further discussion take a look at understat.com

Rashford has the best underlying predictive stats of all United attackers. Even with Bruno on pens , Rashford still has better underlying data.

Thats what the above is based on.

I will try to get the data i had in pre season, which was on Twitter for 2mor.

Rashford had better stats than Bruno, i believe it was just only looking since restart, even with Bruno on pens.

Before that rash stats are even better with the pens, but as i say without he was still ahead.

Rashford is a close to 20goal a season forward, its not surprising he will be able to outscore Bruno possibly.

Selling Rashford is one of my few regrets this year since i rely heavy on underlying stats, may still get him for Son going forward.

Rashford stats last year were definitely NOT as good as Bruno's when you take out Rashford's penalties. Having said all that, Rashford is worth considering if he's going to keep playing striker for a while. But since Martial is coming back and Cavani coming in, I don't see it.

Wasting transfers to trade in and out of good players is a -EV strategy. You're MUCH better off using valuable transfers weeding out underperformers than trying to catch hot performer streaks at the top

A 4.5m defender from Burnley, Newcastle, Southampton, Palace? So few clean sheets right now spending extra on mids or forwards looks a better deal.

      Saiss or Reguilon

Otherwise I'd go with a 4.5 depending on who rotates best with the rest of your defence but not Lamptey. He is injury prone and plays in a poor defence.

I got sucked into the hype of getting Bale on my wildcard and to do that I took out Rashford at 10:50 this morning, feels bad 🙁

I'd prefer Salah over Trent especially with Adrian and Van Dijk out. Also Salah seems on form and TAA doesn't based on recent games.

      Is Bamford a season keeper?

I am tempted to keep at that price tag & it seems he will keep on scoring.

      Suggestions, thanks

Trying to learn from bad fpl moves going forward

I went against my 2 of my principles in week 4 which has cost me already alot. (Selling defender for a hit and selling players who have returned recently for me)

In week 4 just before the deadline :

I sold Keane for Robbo for a hit, even though he didnt need selling and had got me nice points up to then
Also sold Rashford for Barnes as FT , again after Rashford scored in week 3 for me and didnt need moving

Most of my bad moves are coming when my team is doing well and i am forcing moves out of boredom

Seems i am down 20+ points on 2 bad moves.

Need to keep patient and trust the underlying data. Keane and Rashford were both selected on this and did well and i moved them against the data.

Yep. Many (including myself) moved out Son for a -4 GW3 because Mourinho literally said that he was injured and then he got 18 points the next week. That was extremely painful.

What to do with this mess:

      McCarthy, Steer
      Aylin, Bellerin, Mitchell, Reguilón, TAA
J Rod, Mahrez, Salah, Son, Trossard
      Adams, Timo, Brewster?

      1.7m ITB

      Thanks in advance!
