Brewster not immediately drafted into Sheffield United starting line-up

Rhian Brewster (£4.5m) is on the Sheffield United bench for the Blades’ home clash with Fulham this afternoon.

The budget forward was brought in by over 175,000 managers ahead of Gameweek 5 but has to settle for a place in Chris Wilder’s matchday squad.

On the decision to leave Brewster out of the starting line-up, the manager explained:

He was close, it was a tough decision. He trained well but it was a tight decision. He’ll play a part and it’s great to get him in the building. We’re not only here for results now, we’re building as well for the club’s future.

Sheffield United have managed just one goal so far this season, a David McGoldrick (£5.4m) strike against Arsenal during a 2-1 defeat in Gameweek 4.

The Ireland striker and his international colleague John Egan (£4.9m) both start at Bramall Lane. McGoldrick was an injury doubt, while centre-half Egan has been cleared to play after being noted as a close contact of a positive Covid-19 case in the Ireland squad.

Another Irishman in Enda Stevens (£5.4m) sees a positional change to left centre-back, meaning budget defender Jack Robinson (£4.4m) only makes the bench.

That sees a start for summer signing Max Lowe (£4.4m) at left wing-back, while Oliver Norwood (£4.8m) returns to the starting line-up in midfield.

McGoldrick is joined up front by Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) in Wilder’s familiar 3-5-2 system, with £4.5m midfielder Oliver Burke – who had been carrying a knock – dropping to the bench

Fulham have scored three times so far this season, all during a 4-3 defeat to Leeds in GW2, with both sides desperate for a win at Bramall Lane today following four consecutive defeats apiece.

New signings Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) and Chelsea loanee Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.9m) both come straight into Scott Parker’s XI.

Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) also earns a starting spot after impressing on his off-the-bench debut in GW4 as the Cottagers lost 1-0 to Wolves.

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.9m) again leads the Fulham line, while Antonee Robinson (£4.4m) is favoured at left-back over Joe Bryan (£4.9m). Michael Hector (£4.4m) is not part of the matchday 18.

Joachim Andersen (£4.5m), another new centre-back addition at Craven Cottage, is set for a spell on the treatment table with damaged ankle ligaments.

On the defender and other injury issues, Scott Parker explained:

We’ve had some pretty bad news with Andersen, who’s obviously only just come into the football club. He’s damaged his ankle in training so he’ll be out for the foreseeable future.

I wouldn’t want to put an actual timescale on it but it’s going to be some weeks. It’s disappointing of course, because we had him for two days, we saw his quality, but we’re going to be without him now for a little time.

Hopefully we’ll get him right, get him rehabbed, and get him back as part of the team.

Kenny Tete‘s still struggling and will be out for a few weeks. Mario Lemina‘s back, he’s been training now for 10 days. Harrison Reed is getting there, but the weekend will come too early for him.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; Stevens, Egan, Basham; Lowe, Lundstram, Norwood, Berge, Baldock; McGoldrick, McBurnie.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Robinson, Ream, Adarabioyo, Aina; Cairney, Anguissa; Cavaleiro, Loftus-Cheek, Lookman; Mitrovic.

The thing with Pogba, is if you are paying that much money, then you expect him to influence games significantly. That can be offensively (like KDB or Fernandes) or defensively (like Kante or Fabinho). But with Pogba you don't get that influence enough. He doesn't make enough tackles, interceptions, or defend well at set pieces to make a significant defensive contribution. And he doesn't contribute as an assister of assisters, an assister or a goal scorer enough to make a significant offensive contribution.

The people who brought in Brewster weren't really doing so for one GW anyway, you'd assume. That's more of a structural change to move money to a different area of your team.

I never wildcarded but I did take an 8 pointer. Got rid of Werner, Norwood and KdB.

Werner has already pushed me and it wouldn't surprise me if Norwood does the same today.

It would be so 2020 if the 2 players that lost me money and did nothing the last 4 weeks ended up outscoring their replacements this GW.

If Man City and Man Utd win their games in hand (easier said than done), the PL table will be looking pretty familiar again. Big 6 will be in the top half of the table already and will be poised to assert their dominance.

He will play a good part of the second half
He's played very little football since July remember
Also may be a motivational thing for the other forwards

not trained much with the team, not match fit, hasn’t played a competitive match since July, doesn’t know their systems, young, inexperienced, never played in a 2 man striker partnership ... and the gaffer said it was a big decision whether to start him or not ...

No problem with a Brewster cameo and yellow card to block any filthy bench jam points 🙂

Brewster on the bench doesn’t affect anything, surely nobody brought him in as anything other than 8th attacker bench fodder in a 3-5-2?

What should I do with this? 4.5ITB

    McCarthy
    TAA - Robbo - Saiss
    Bruno - Son - Jhames - Pereira - Soucek
    Jimenez - DCL
    (4.0 - Holding - Johnson - Davis)

Currently have no bench cover, and not happy with GK. Want to upgrade Pereira and Soucek, keeping an eye on Pulisic as a differential for now. Also likely to swap from Son back to KDB in a few weeks, so probably need to keep enough in the bank for that.

I believe he and the United team will take off now. At 10.5 he can easily match the 11.5s and 12.0s. Already have Son, Sterling, Salah in the midfield.

Yea I own Bruno and captained yesterday but he's coming out. They were not good yesterday and they will lose 2 of the next 3. Newcastle made it look more convincing that it was.

Bruno will continue contributing even if they lose. Everything in that team goes through him. And they will remain good in attack.

            Mate.

            Mate

They were not great and still he was one pen conversion away from a 16 pointer.

What are you thinking. It's FPL suicide. He's the 7th highest scoring mid, has played one game fewer and they haven't even really hit third gear

Because I don't have a Liverpool mid. I don't plan to change the rest of my team and I'm just rotating big hitters. Salah/Mane over the next 2 outscore Bruno.

30 points is not close in a season where the top scorer is often around the 250 mark.

But factor in that extra million saving and what you can do with that, like I said at worst I think 30 off (but personally think it will be 15-20)

You can also factor in the captaincy and amplify the 30 points difference based on that too.

If you want an argument look at his numbers since joining utd, hasn't stopped this season either he is only behind Salah out of the ones you've mentioned I think and Salah has had 1 game more

                        3 years, 5 months ago

I’m looking at his numbers (the ones that actually matter from a predictive standpoint) and he can’t keep up. He hasn’t broken football.

He doesn't need to keep up this rate to match the likes of the players you've mentioned though

I'm not a stats guy so not sure what you're referring to but he's a big threat in my eyes

The quality of chances he is creating and getting, with a normalised rate of penalties added back in (united are not doing anything special to win more penalties despite what everyone might think).

I meant he can’t keep up with the players I’ve mentioned. His open play goal threat is about the same as KDBs. His assist threat is about 1/3 of KDBs. They’re both on pens. How can he keep up long term? Nobody can explain it aside from ‘look at these results over 15 games’.

                              1. @persecuted_by_mods
                                  3 years, 5 months ago

It is hard to explain, that said what's worse? Us going look it's happened for half a season and has continued this season or someone consistently saying the stats say this will stop when week after week it doesn't stop. Worryingly for your prediction his goal threat from open play is gonna come to the fore with pogba dropped and if utd keep to a more balanced team rather than cram everyone in he will keep up with all but mane and Salah but again depends on definition of keep up, 30 points? 50? 10?

                                • Goonsquad245

The definition of ‘keep up’ seems to be match or beat on current narrative. I appreciate he is cheaper and so he doesn’t have to.

We’ll see at the end of the season. If his goal threat does improve then it’s a different proposition - can only go on what we’ve seen before now.

Stevens has been playing poorly as LWB since late last season while Lowe has impressed so far, so has every chance to be first choice
