Why Wilder didn’t start Brewster as Mitrovic suffers nightmare outing

SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-1 FULHAM

  • Goals: Billy Sharp (£5.8m) | Ademola Lookman (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Jack Robinson (£4.4m)
  • Bonus: Lookman x3, Sharp x2, Chris Basham (£4.9m) x2

Sunday afternoon was one to forget for Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.9m) and his FPL owners.

The Serbia striker missed a penalty after 57 minutes, skimming the crossbar with Aaron Ramsdale (£4.9m) well beaten.

The forward then managed to foul Jack Robinson (£4.4m) – who had earlier conceded a penalty – during a melee in the Fulham area.

That passage of play led to a Tom Cairney (£4.9m) chance on goal but after the VAR reviewed Mitrovic’s challenge on the Blades substitute, a spot-kick was awarded.

Billy Sharp (£5.8m) made no mistake with his penalty, firing home to earn the home side a point.

It went from bad to worse for Mitrovic in added time as the Fulham hitman headed wide twice from close range following deliveries by the impressive Ademola Lookman (£5.0m) and Cairney.

On the striker, Fulham boss Scott Parker commented:

It was painful for him but he has earned the right [to take the penalty]. Today wasn’t his day but he has scored and assisted a lot of goals. This is someone we owe a lot to. He will dust himself down and go again.

LOOKMAN PASSES EYE TEST

Having impressed from the bench in Gameweek 4, Lookman put in another eye-catching performance against Sheffield United.

It was his goal after 77 minutes that gave Fulham the lead. The winger, having received the ball from Cairney, lost it again but persevered to beat a couple of Sheffield United defenders before hammering an effort past Ramsdale from inside the box.

At just £5.0m, Lookman might be a player worthy of addition to FPL watchlists with Fulham’s fixture list looking decent until Gameweek 11.

BREWSTER LEFT TO SIMMER

Chris Wilder decided not to make immediate use of Rhian Brewster (£4.5m), with the former Liverpool striker named on the bench for Sunday’s bottom-of-the-table clash.

The budget forward entered the fray after 63 minutes and immediately made an impact by setting up a shooting opportunity for Enda Stevens (£5.4m).

The Irishman, who moved back to his regular wing-back berth after Robinson replaced the injured Max Lowe (£4.4m), attempted to return the ball to Brewster when he might have been better off having an effort on goal.

Apart from that moment, Brewster was unable to impact on proceedings from a Fantasy perspective but the profligacy of Oli McBurnie (£5.7m) could mean that the budget FPL option will make Chris Wilder’s XI in Gameweek 6.

On the new signing, the Blades boss said:

It was a big decision before whether to start him. I believed he only had 50 minutes in him so I thought the best way to introduce him would be off the bench, as we did, and get his first minutes as a Sheffield United player.

It’s difficult because younger players get caught up in between the under 23s and the first team and sometimes maybe don’t get up to speed as quickly as they would if they were part of the first team.

John Fleck (£5.8m) was due to be part of the starting team against Fulham but a back injury picked up on Scotland duty will sideline the midfielder for a period.

Wilder explained:

John was due to start today but unfortunately he has picked up an injury and is out for four to six weeks.

SPURNING CHANCES

McBurnie was the chief protagonist in a dominant first-half display from Sheffield United but not in the manner the Scotland international might have hoped.

Having already headed wide from a Chris Basham (£4.9m) cross after 10 minutes, the forward spurned a glorious opportunity as he nodded a Basham delivery at Alphonse Areola (£4.5m) from six yards out.

McBurnie then failed to get a decisive touch on a low Stevens cross, putting it across the Fulham goalkeeper rather than towards the net.

On his team’s display, Wilder commented:

Delighted to get a result, disappointed we didn’t come in at half time upping the game. We were a little bit more like our old selves in the first half and had control of the game.

But we were not like our old selves in the second half. First half us, they dominated the second half.

It is a bit of a battle at the moment, a bit of a grind but delighted to get something out of the game.

Along with McBurnie’s missed chances, the Blades also had a goal ruled out in the first half for offside after Fulham debutant Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m) turned a Sander Berge (£5.0m) cross into his own net.

Wilder’s opposite number Parker also recognised that it was the cliched ‘game of two halves’ at Bramall Lane and believes that Fulham are turning a corner in terms of performance, saying:

I thought in the second-half performance we were exceptional. In the first half, we came with a bit of plan, we needed to tinker things at half time and the players responded very well.

Second half I saw a dynamic team, a team that could create chances and I was pleased overall in that sense. Still plenty of learning and plenty of improvement to do. A young team with young players coming in and making their debuts. Overall pleased.

Playing against a very well-drilled side here and their formation can cause you problems. We tried to nullify their threat. On the counter-attacking side, I thought we looked deadly. Pleased with that but probably need to be a bit more clinical in these moments.

The team is going in the right direction, not just today. The last performance as well was very pleasing. From where we were in the first three games where we had our struggles we appear to be coming out of that and pushing in the right direction.

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; Stevens, Egan, Basham (Sharp 81′); Lowe (J Robinson 19′), Lundstram, Norwood, Berge, Baldock; McGoldrick (Brewster 63′), McBurnie.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Robinson, Ream, Adarabioyo, Aina; Cairney, Anguissa; Lookman, Loftus-Cheek (Lemina 81′), Cavaleiro; Mitrovic.

Salah looks the obvious captain pick this week but I can’t look past Bruno. Looked great last game and Chelsea are so leaky he could have a big haul vs them.
Anyone else considering captain for him?

I think both Burnley and Sheffield will be stubborn to break down. Man U, Chelsea will probably be a goal fest and I can see a pen in it as well

True, Man U,s starting xi was weak though and they conceded early then missed a pen. They looked far better when Donny came on, hopefully Donny starts that game.

Morning all, hope everyone got lots of green arrows this week!

I don't have Kane or Hamez (I know) but a happy Son captainer here on a 71pt week plus Saiss.

I'm forced to choose between the two however as I have just enough cash for either Podence to Rodriguez or Ings to Kane.

I'm loathe to drop Ings but basically the question is this:
    A. Rodriguez and Ings
    B. Kane and Podence

    1. Pegboy
      • 13 Years

I'd normally say to prioritise Kane, but depending on tonight, Podence needs to go.

Tough choice probably Kane is the one who can hurt your rank the most over the next 3 games.

    5. thegaffer82

The second because it has Kane. I also have Podence and he needs to go for sure, but Kane is playing the best I've ever seen him. He's scoring goals like old-school Kane, and assisting like KDB. Best player in the game by far right now!

Get rid of Podence for a hit or wait another week. But do B) for sure

      1. buzzkill
        • 8 Years

I appreciate the reply, thanks. He's clearly a better option than Ings but I know he'll still be knocking them in after I sell which will hurt. But will I care too much when I'm getting Kane's dub-digits every week? Probably not.

Would you do Ings and Podence to Kane and McGinn (or any other

Sadly not, someone else suggested that but I'm 0.3 off doing that move. I do have funds tied up in double pool defence so I've got the cash if/when I downgrade Trent/Robbo but I'm not doing it for a -8. Might do it over 2 weeks

Yeah that's the thing, Rod/Ings surely outscores Kane/Podence over the season and I'll usually captain Salah (or Son for favourite Spurs fixtures anyways). Thank you for your input mate.

    --Martinez
    --Robbo--Chilwell--Lamptey
    --Salah--Grealish--JRod--Barnes
    --Kane--DCL--Bamford.

    --Nyland--Mitchell--KWP--Burke.

    Maybe Barnes to Bruno/Son?

    Thanks guys.

Yeah maybe, I wouldn’t be hitting for Kane this week as I only like to take a hit for captaincy or because I’ll only have 10 players.

3 great fixtures but then I don’t really want him all the way till after Christmas and I’m thinking I’ll want sterling & Kdb (providing fit) from 10 onwards

      Hey all,

      Had a good chat on previous article about this and have revisited, thoughts on the revamped wildcard team please;

      Martinez, 4.0 (any in particular?)
      Cresswell, Konsa, KWP, Dallas, Kilman
      Salah, Rashford, Son, Rodriguez, Barkley*
      Kane, DCL, Bamford

      EXACT funds.

*Any particular reason people are hyping Barkley over McGinn? McGinn already has four assists and a goal this season and he's cheaper by 0.4M

That 0.4M can be put into defence? Also I can downgrade Bamford to someone like Brewster for an extra 1.2M so I can have 1.2M or 1.6M to upgrade the defence if I want too.

Also contemplating Foden over Rodriguez, just so I have City cover and I don't have to worry about an Everton blank (again gives me 1.3M to spend elsewhere).

I'd downgrade Bamford and use money elsewhere. McGinn I'd go over Barks, forget City until they hit form.

So Bamford to Brewster and McGinn over Barkley = 1.6M banked to upgrade (defence) or hold?

I got Barkley last week... takes more shots than McGinn and likely to be on pens. For me he's great value at 5.9 in an attacking, in-form side with good fixtures.

A weekly not so informed 2 line comment on the 8 matches to date. sorry for repost
      Noteable overall information:
Penalties are getting rarer; the refs seem to have gone the other way when making decisions. However, with the high scoring matches still in abundance it maybe time to move away from clean sheet potential and reinvest in attacking returns.

Everton 2 Pool 2: Atticking qualities and defensive frailties seem to be order of the Day with Pool. Maybe time to move TAA on and keep Robbo especially with VVD out. No Richarlison could dampen the appeal of DCL in future Everton games.

Chelski 3 Soton 3: Similar to Spurs, there is no doubt attack appeal remains with Chelski. Time for defensive assets, Especially James to be moved on. Soton Mr reliable Danny Ings remains an interest. Both sides were woeful defending.

Citeh 1 Arsenal 0: gone are the times of bucket loads of goals for Citeh, but worth a mention a slightly overweight Kun was back and Foden got an assist. Pool, Chelski, Spurs and ManU attacking assets maybe to consider over Citeh. Arsenal were woeful IMO but could have still scored a couple. Saka is the only Gunners player I would consider ATM. (Young Class)

Newcastle 1 ManU 4: ManU spent the first hour banging at locked doors. Not so sure they are over their slump. The Dutchman picked them up when he came on. Pogba added very little. Wilson still remains promising having being robbed of a goal by de Gea's great save.
Bruno can still be a good option too.

Shef Utd 1 Fulham 1: The most boring game of the weekend. Stay away from both IMO; neither offer much apart from Brewster at 4.5 being an enabler. Hard to call anything else as against decent sides, even less will be worthwhile.

Palace 1 Brighton 1: The shine of early good play is disappearing with Palace. I think 18 shots to 1 in Brightons favour and the one from palace was the penalty. Maupay still looks a good choice but Palace defenders seem the only way into their side, no matter their fixtures.
Lamptey is the little right footed Messi who would not surprise me if he has positional changes further up the field as he gets older. Clean sheets maybe scarce though.

Spurs 3 Hammers 3: Total class from Son and Kane who you should have probably both. They ripped hammers apart in 1st half, only to sit back ten yards in the second. Anonion had a quiet day but Soucek seems to be great for his price. Reguillon looked promising and Masuaku could do well when fixtures turn. Even in these time we won't see a comeback like Hammers for a long while.

Leicester 0 Villa 1: Neither side were close to their best. No vardy running channels seem to limit the foxes. Their full backs cannot operate so far forward with a lack of mobility in the central defensive setup. Grealish, Barkley and Martinez remain the picks at Villa offering good value.

Conclusion to date: Whatever side you have, outside of Kane/Son, resist chasing the ace each time a player gets a haul. I can't help but think Werner can really do well after half the world have sild him. Keep safe picks and live minimal amounts in defense.

Considering 3 transfers going for Kane, current team is:

Martinez, McCarthy - Robertson Saiss, Digne, Justin Lamptey - Son, Zaha, Salah, Barnes, Burke - Ings, Jimenez, DCL.

      a) Ings + Jimenez out for Kane + Watkins
      b) Jimenez + Barnes or Zaha out. Kane + cheap mid.
      c) Ings + Jimenez out for Kane + Che Adams
      d) a or b + Barnes for Grealish.

Want Kane badly, just don't know how to make him in

Devastating that van Dijk's has an ACL injury and perhaps even more worrying that the club have chosen not to put a timeframe on it - opening up the door that we may not see him again this season.

In better news, Alisson should be back for the West Ham (H) in GW7 as per Liverpool Echo. This coincides with a sea of green fixtures - they only play 2 of the top 6 for the rest of the year: SHU, WHU, mci, LEI, bha, WOL, ful, TOT, cry, WBA, new

I think, and I hope that Klopp goes to 3412 for this period:

        Alisson
        Fabinho - Matip - Gomez
        TAA - Henderson - Thiago - Robertson
        Firmino
        Salah - Mane

        - More numbers in defence providing protection for Gomez and TAA who've made poor starts to the season
        - Push TAA and Robbo higher up
        - Get Firmino away from the penalty box (let's face it, Klopp isn't going to drop him)
        - Get Salah and Mane as strikers with more emphasis on goals

Perhaps I'm living in hope here, but I think this is Liverpool's best solution for now. With the fixtures so good, I wouldn't be selling defensive assets without seeing how Klopp lines up.

3 at the back is never going to happen with Klopp. But i think the approach to games will akter a bit, maybe a bit more gung ho, as he sees that defence are more vulnerable hus attacking prowess could be called more upon. I would preger Fabinho as cb partner to either one of matip or gomes

it's not the players i picked (VVD!!!!) it's the fact that my time machine packed in a few weeks back, and my hindsight machine is working fine! I played the wildcard because i had had it with waiting for werner, and as i needed to make at least 3 transfers to get players i wanted, i thought a wildcard was the best option. I am never listening to me again!

The voices in my head!!! Sold VVD and Costa (kept him as he is facing his old club tonight) and brought in Mitchell and William! Strikers are fearless this season due to no crowd abuse, and i thing the lack of abuse is stopping defenders giving their all. So, i am going to downgrade all my defence to cheap starters (and Bellerin, as he was played out of position in midfield against city) as clean sheets are as rare as rocking horse sheet this season. put the money into attack.
