Pro Pundits - Az

Who are the best FPL assets to buy from Aston Villa?

Az dedicates his latest Pro Pundits column to the in-form Villans as he looks at the best defensive and attacking options from Dean Smith’s side.

Taking a break from looking at my own Fantasy Premier League team’s progress, I put the question out to you guys with the aim of finding out who people would be interested in reading about.

Not surprisingly, the favoured team to scrutinise was the only one in the top leagues of Europe to have won every match this year, the mighty Aston Villa.

Defensive numbers (first four Gameweeks)

Would you rather have Rodríguez or Grealish if you already had DCL?

Both are top picks. You can't really go wrong with either.
I have a certain preference for JRod as I feel he has a much higher ceiling.

    Any thoughts on my team?

    Guaita - Forster
    VVD - Saiss - Keane - Lamptey - Mitchell
    Salah - Son - Grealish - Zaha - Barnes
    Kane - Jim - Brewster

Obviously have to remove VVD this week. Im getting Targett most likely to cover AVL good fixtures. Then the plan is to remove Jimmy and Barnes down the line for Premium + cheapie. Sounds ok or moronic?

Hes on set pieces and I rate that highly. It's like a free chance of extra points

          • 12 Years
          3 years, 6 months ago

For that price, would you rate it over the Set Piece Threat of a Konsa for example? That's what I'm thinking about. Leaning towards bringing in one Villa defender, so I'm also assessing the options atm.

Yeah, cant quite squeeze Grealish to CHE mid, would have to downgrade Saiss to a cheapie. Honestly I'm just not convinced there is a good pick in CHE yet. Kai has looked shaky and gives an Özil vibe which I just don't like for FPL. Pulisic would be great, but fitness issues and the fact that Lampard still doesnt have a preferred starting 11 have been putting me off him.

Yeah definitely Aguero always worth a consideration.. would I personally get him.. probably not. I think it's a Kane Vs Aguero debate and from now until GW8 Kane wins. Possibly a future transfer

Any of these hits worth it? have 2.4m itb

A: Havertz >> Bruno....chelsea fixtures are mixed, man utd's are tough but bruno the talisman whereas havertz might not even start this gw
B: Jimmy >> Kane...tough one...two plum fixtures for Jimmy but Kane has the form and 3 great fixtures
C: Barnes >> 9.4m mid...Rodri? already have DCL though if that makes a diff. Had barnes for last two home games but not looking good

I believe you would have more value in defense if you bring in a defender from Villa along with a separate team GK (unless you're alright with a double up)

I'd like to throw this topic out here to get a bit of responses and see what others think and do.
When you feel that you've gone too much in the deep FPL-wise, what's your "temporary exit" strategy?
In other words, when you feel that you've become a bit too overwhelmed with FPL, what do you do to take your mind off of things, recharge and get back at it?

I have taken measures not to get overwhelmed. Such as not looking deeply at the stats except when I actually need to replace a player, and just listening to one podcast/source of info (fpl black box).

Physical excercise and good food (not takeaway but making it myself) are also good breaks from everything else

I had to quit for a few years tbh. My main problem was mini leagues. I joined again just before deadline with no mini leagues and having a great time now.

What is it getting to you?

Distractions help. I like video games and movies. Video games work better as easier to immerse and switch off thoughts. So finding a hobby is good. I turned one of mine into a business! Anxiety can be a blessing when focussed.

Just try to keep in control of your thoughts. Tell the ill thoughts to go away as soon as you realise they're consuming you. Don't allow yourself to be sucked under and consumed. And remember, when the fun stops, stop.

      I hope this helps

I appreciate the kind sentiments and honest words, mate.
Usually, when it gets a bit too tiring for me, I do something similar to Brosstan in terms of cooking to feel a more productive. I add some chill music as well. The latter is v important for me.
Very glad to see that you were able to grow a business out of this! That's impressive!

I took a 3 year break from FPL. Was very useful for perspective. I don't tilt anymore and once a deadline is hit I forget about how my players do and just watch it for the football.

I'm also finding that FanTeam is really helpful because while I might blank in FPL, I've hedged in a number of FanTeam drafts so if I lose somewhere I win somewhere else.

But definitely the 3 year break was so good for dealing with any issues with tilt I had. It's a game.

Hedging bets works for some but not for all. Very much a mental thing. Personally I am naturally very pessimistic and notice failures a lot more than successes. Hedging bets isn't a guarantee of success but it is often a guarantee of failure. E.g. if my team A players haul and team B players blank, I get upset that the team B players blanked.

    Guaita 4.0
    TAA James* KWP Lamptey 4.0
    Salah Son Foden* Pereira* Soucek
    Jimmy* Ings DCL

    * = players I would like to move out at some point soon.
Guys I'd really like to bring in are: Kane, Hamez, Chillwell or Konsa

What transfer should I prioritize? Or should I take a hit (or 2 :))?

Don’t take out Jiminez. Reliable goalscorer.

Pereira to Hamez for free this week, nothing else. It’s not a bad team at all, you’re just worrying about the players who you don’t own, as they scored well last week. Keep patient and don’t take unnecessary hits

I think I agree. So Kane and Hamez are moves to further improve the squad. But I also have a problem with James, since he isn't playing.

        So what to do first?

My thoughts are now on either Jimmy --> Kane or Pereira --> Hamez, because of the higher potential upside of those moves...And true: jimmy is a reliable pointscorer. But his/Wolves performances haven't really impressed me. Attacking wise they look a bit 'off'. Or is that overthinking it? 🙂

Thoughts on wildcarding - my team is by no means dreadful (see below) but most of my league has WC'd and am worried about being caught adrift. It's just so goddamn tempting!

    Martinez
    Trent / Chilwell / Justin
    Salah / J Rod / Sterling / Zaha
    DCL / Werner / Brewster

    (Walker-Peters & 3 non starters)

    1. Pukki Blinders

Doesn’t sound like a logical reason to WC to me, hold it to gain max value out of it

    A) Son + Maupay
    B) Kane + McGinn

Very much leaning towards A, what do people think?

    1. Tonyawesome69
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 6 months ago

Probably A but not much between them and I'm not a fan of Maupay as a FPL pick. He will get chances but I think he is a poor finisher. Upside, he is on pens

      1. Pukki Blinders
        • 4 Years

I'd probably go B, because Kane is an excellent captaincy option I think.
But A is also a viable option.

Can you stretch the money to upgrade McGinn to Barkley. Then surely B

      1. Pukki Blinders
        • 4 Years

Nope can’t afford Barkley or it would be an easy B... that’s the dilemma

Well then its a real 50/50 decision. Both good choices.
I think 1 plus for A is it gives you a 6.5m attacker slot. Easy to switch around to others in that bracket (for instance Antonio, as soon as WHU's fixtures clear up)

    A) I'm not a great fan of Maupay, very frustrating player to watch play. Gets in good positions, too often squanders them. Penalties a definite positive however considering the current climate.

    B) Villa playing well and probably have the better fixtures, I'm fan of McGinn so he gets my vote... I've just done Grealish in this GW as I like Villa a lot.

As for Kane vs Son honestly pick one and stick, both will get points over the season. Kane perhaps slightly better (penalties as mentioned above) but of course Son is cheaper!

Draft a WC and see how many changes you would make. For me the team is OK and you should concentrate on the weak link. I think you should look into Greenwood. He hasn't been in the squad for the last two games, don't know the reason for it.

I quite like it, it's different..

On WC myself and have decided against Justin because he doesn't have great fixtures in the next 5 (particularly given you are likely playing TAA and Reguilon every week) and then Peirera may be back by the time fixtures turn.

Not entirely sold on Greenwood or Podence, but otherwise solid.

Oh I misread it.. if that's your current team I wouldn't wildcard. It's different, as I say, but that isn't automatically a bad thing.

Thanks guys, maybe I'll hold on for at least one more GW!

Yeah I thought Greenwood would be a nice differential and cheap route into the attack, captained him last week and he didn't even get into the squad!

Maybe the wolves double up is a little too much, but from what i've read, Podence has been unluckly not to haul the last few games.

Monday: Sell Jimmy, especially for Kane, at 8.5 he's not explosive enough, not enough support this year, Wolves not attacking enough despite fixtures.
