Pro Pundits - Lateriser

Three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser on Aguero, Villa and a polarising FPL season

The 2019/20 number one Fantasy manager in India, Lateriser addresses a rollercoaster campaign, FPL ownership, Brighton, Villa, Sergio Aguero, his Gameweek 6 team and more in his latest Pro Pundits piece.

This season is not for the weak-hearted and there are just way too many good options in this game at present.

Before Project Restart last season, the premium player conversation primarily revolved around Liverpool and Manchester City assets. Now we have a Spurs team that have accumulated the most number of big chances in the league in the premium conversation, in addition to assets from Manchester United and Chelsea who have shown us enough in the recent past to be a part of this conversation.

You are going to have to develop a very thick skin this season as there will be many Gameweeks where players you own don’t get points and others are getting monster hauls. But on the flipside, the opportunities in this game are very enticing too.

We have Liverpool and Manchester City enjoying a decent bunch of fixtures in the next two Gameweeks and the likes of Sadio Mane (£11.9m), Raheem Sterling (£11.5m) and Sergio Aguero (£10.4m) all have ownerships of under 10% at the time of writing. Mane has looked very sharp this season and has the highest xG amongst all midfielders, and next faces an obliging Sheffield United side that have lost one of their best defenders for a long time and who just don’t look like the team from 2019/20.

Manchester City scored 95 goals in their season without Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) and that makes Sterling and Aguero perfectly viable ‘differential’ captaincy options should you fancy it – which brings me to my point.

This is something I’d spoken about in my very first article for Fantasy Football Scout and it is just something I want to reiterate. Given the wide range of options that we have this season, it is very important to find your identity as a Fantasy Premier League manager. This is what I said back then:

If you are going to get sleepless nights going without Mohamed Salah, don’t do it. It doesn’t suit your personality. It’s not good for your blood pressure and you don’t end up having fun. You’re better off playing the odds and percentages game because that is where your comfort zone lies.

The game has opened up very nicely for the ‘dullards’ as well as the ‘opportunists’ with the wide variety of options we have. Given the increased impact of social media on everything mental, if you can’t handle a huge haul from a highly owned player, get that highly owned player because going maverick isn’t for you.

I never talk a lot about ownership percentages but given the nature of the season, I thought it was important to address. Seeing the high cost of transfers that FPL managers have had to pay on the ‘Rough with the Smooth’ section on the Scoutcast this season made me want to talk about this because I get the sense that there are going to be many difficult FPL decisions this season leading to a high variance in outcome. You need to be aware of your personality and tailor your FPL approach accordingly. This season, variance is a lot higher than usual and I expect that trend to continue. Be prepared for it and remember that this is only a game, one which involves a fair amount of luck and unpredictability as well.

Now that philosophy is out of the way, I want to talk about a few more objective things.

What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

WC in GW9 is going to be glorious. Bruno and Martial against WBA and losing Son and Kane for Aguero and KDB prior to Fulham, Burnley and WBA at The Etihad. Absolutely glorious. Also the ideal time to get off Wolves and onto West Ham. Dream WC

Indeed it's when I had planned to use it before caving and using in GW5!

It should work out very well but, as we have seen, this season is going to have a load of surprises up its sleeve and I think an earlier or later WC could still pay dividends just as well.

Removing Kane and Son will just punish WCers. Most people will just have a wolves player they need to remove. No big deal

This. Dumping Wolves will be sensible if their current form continues. Dumping Son/Kane could be disastrous.

    Morning all,

    McCarthy (Nyland)
    TAA, Saiss, Dier, Taylor, Mitchell
    Salah, Son, Pulisic, Podence, Doucoure
    Werner, Adams, Wilson

3.2m in the bank, 2FT - would quite like Kane/Aguero

    a) Wilson, Doucoure, Dier > Kane, Bissouma, Konsa (-4)
    b) Wilson, Doucoure > Aguero, Bissouma
    c) Wilson, Doucoure, Dier > Aguero, Soucek, Konsa (-4)

Doing pretty well so far (99k OR), but every week it is a struggle to hold back and not to make some changes, always want to improve the squad. I have quite a chunk in the bank as well due to KDB to Zaha move last week.

Already brought Digne for Reece James
I have 3.6m in the bank

Would you : A) do nothing and play Justin against Arsenal away
    B) Dale Stephens to Grealish (Foden even?) for -4 and bench Justin
    C) Keinan Davis to DCW / Maupay for -4 and bench Justin

Kane and Watkins are other two strikers.. Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome

hahah I get it, usually doing something for a hit doesn't pay off for me, but when I make an early transfer, it is so hard not to do anything for the rest of the week.

I guess it is about whether I believe that any transfer will outscore Justin by at least 4 points, and I have no clue, Arsenal aren't that convincing at the moment..

Morning, lads. Currently at 6.5k with 2 FTs and 3.9 itb. McCarthy Nyland TAA Justin KWP Lascelles Taylor Salah Son James Pereira Bissouma Kane Wilson Mitrovic A) Wilson - > Aguero B) Wilson - > DCL C) Other suggestions? A Villa defender is something on my mind tbh. It should be noted that Aguero in would mean I would have no more cash itb. This would render me in need of downgrading TAA for more cash flow.

Don't agree with Chilwell everyone. Chelsea's defending is actually awful and they don't look like keeping many clean sheets. He does have attacking and bonus potential but at 5.5 is that enough?

Saiss isn't a guaranteed starter now Marcal's back.

Robbo/TAA are going to be top 2 scoring defenders IMO. Walker's an interesting option too. Wan Bissaka. Semedo the best Wolves pick.

              Agreed on Chillwell and Saiss.

Don't agree with Robbo/TAA prediction though, especially the state of their def w/injuries atm.

Wan B in the same boat as Chillwell. Attacking but poor defense. ManU with exactly zero CSs so far.

Walker a card magnet, Cancelo is a better option but not nailed. Although I would like someone from the City def...

I wish PvA would come back into the mix soon bc of his set piece duties. He's very Bainesy.

I'm having a tough time finding a R. James replacement. Maybe Reguillion or Cresswell.

              Already have:

              Martinez/Steer

I want to fit in a WHU defender on WC and am trying to make a decision between Masuaku and Cresswell. Can someone explain to me why Masuaku's xA (0.91) is higher than Cresswell's (0.60), while Cresswell has created 12 chances and Masuaku 6? Is the xA KPI purely based on open play situations?

Cresswell created 12 chances but of lower quality.
Musuaku created 6 chances but of higher quality.
xA KPI is based on the situation, yes, but you can't say it is purely based on open play.
A header from 10 yards from an open play situation has different xG/xA to a header from same position from a set piece ( based on the historical trends)

Masuaku is playing more advanced, sometimes as part of a front 3. I'm not sure how long he's nailed for there though.

I'm sort of regretting my move now of Jimi > Kane. Not because it's bad. It's a very good move.

But I really want Mane and I had Havertz > Mane sitting there as a really nice option.

    A) Mane + Jimi
    B) Havertz + Kane

It was a nice opportunity to take a strong differential and I opted against it. And now looking at future planning Mane > Sterling is much more natural than say Kane > Aguero (I don't trust Aguero this season). We will see. My future planning looks worse with Kane in.

Again, I think Mane + Jimi is more flexible. Mane > Sterling/KdB is one move.

Mane is also a really strong differential who has stats and fixtures on his side. We will see.

Just one additional transfer for any future plans you have.
          -4 points.

I think B could outscore A by 4 points easily in the coming few weeks.

        Yeah basically.

I would also be planning Jimi > Werner in GW7. The only problem, is that I'd be stuck with Reece James. Option B gives me James > Robertson as an option with the leftover money.

        It was a close call.

Already did the -4 hit. GTG? Bench ok?

    Ramsdale
    TAA Justin Mitchell
    Salah(C) Sterling Son Bissouma
    Kane DCL Watkins

    Steer Romeu KWP Taylor

    0.1 itb

If I had other ft then I would have done Rams to Martinez but that has to wait now but just had to get Kane in atm. Major reshuffling in defenc will have to wait untill WC one day.

It came up briefly in the DZ this morning. Some comments about him being bang average etc.

I know he is disliked as an fpl troll etc. but I think he is excellent. He seems much improved since his Everton days.

Hey inconsistency of starts hampered him at Chelsea. He’s looked great in the past couple of games.

I've took the punt. Likes being a big fish in the small pond. I feel he'll benefit from a friendly rivalry with Grealish. A few set pieces and the stats and his clear selfishness make him a decent option

I’m also about to get him in. Moving from a 3-4–3 to a 3-5-2. Not because of Ross, like. He’s an enabler to get another premium as well.

I wish he still played for Everton. I think people have forgotten just how good some of his goals were.

He was frustrating to watch at Everton at times. Held onto the ball too long and ran into dead ends. I think he looks much better now.

      1. ZeBestee
        • 9 Years

I don't think you need expensive backline. Lamptey has assists in his locker, and I believe Brighton will soon start getting cleansheets, Dallas is a good option for a very good Leeds side, Kilman is a risky one, Target has set pieces to his locker and plays for a very good defensive Villa, and Mitchell has been a decent 4M defender so far.
