Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 6?

It feels like 2017/18 all over again when it comes to Fantasy Premier League captaincy decisions right now.

It was back in the good-old days where we were faced with a choice between Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) and Harry Kane (£10.8m) ahead of a new Gameweek – and yet here we are in 2020, with the two sides impressing themselves on the latest debate for the armband.

The Captain Sensible article is back once again to help you pick the right option for the armband, using key underlying statistics for player form and the defences of their upcoming opponents.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) is leading this week’s Captain Poll as he is backed by half of our voters, specifically 48.5% The in-form Liverpool midfielder is facing Sheffield United in Gameweek 6, who are yet to win a Premier League game this season, with four defeats and one draw.

Meanwhile, nobody has recorded as many goal involvements in the opening five matches of the season as Harry Kane (£10.8m), who already has five goals, seven assists and 60 points.

The Tottenham striker also faces an out-of-form team on Monday, as Burnley are still looking for their first league victory of the season (three defeats, one draw).

Kane currently sits second in the Captain Poll, with nearly 20.0% of our users backing the Englishman.

Behind Kane, his counterpart Son Heung-min (£9.4m, 6.5% of votes), Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish (£7.2m, 5.0%) and Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling (£11.6m, 3.0% of votes) remain as the outside picks this week.

Once again, using some underlying data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area and combining the poll results, current form and analysis of the opposition, we are going to try to pick the best captain for Gameweek 6.

The best captain this week is TAA

    Reasons.

    1. Sheffield have actually the 5th best defence this year on underlying data and have the most underperforming side points wise (They should have 5 more points on the table)

Thus, i see them keeping it a low scoring game where Salah and Mane could be restricted. TAA despite being deeper still is creating alot of big chances and has set pieces. If liverpool keep a cleansheet he will most likely get bonus points. He also has the potential to score in other ways.

    2. Kane is playing Burnley, Spurs attack is overperforming, although Kane is not, Burnely are ranked the 2nd best defence this year based on underlying data. Despite missing Mee they should have conceded almost 4 goals less than they have. Both will regress - Burnley will improve and Spurs attack will fall back.

I see it been a tight 0-1 type game. Maybe even a 0-0

    3. No other candidates. West ham are performing well on all underlying data. Dont see city scoring alot. Villa are massively overperforming on underlying attacking data.

So , its TAA this week.

You're captaining TAA the week after VVD has been injured? Is Becker definitely back by then? I know Sheff have been pretty dire going forward but they are the type of team that often puts in unexpectedly good performances against big sides ad sometimes can break them down and catch them unawares.

They havent done so historically away from home against the top teams attacking wise.

Their defence is more the factor.

Such a small sample size means little, I mean just look at the teams Burnley have played this year.

Everyone said the same about West Ham being defensively solid and Kane and Son still ripped them apart.

Kane being rested tonight means I'll give him the armband, he's the man in form.

      1. FPL_trail_runner

Spurs finishing last week was exceptional to the level its not suistainable. Their xG was lower than west Ham

You play the game again 10 times and they dont score 3 in most of the games.

        1. F4L

Not when players are going through purple patches, everything goes in. Kane was a few inches away from 20 points, and set Bale up for a one on one as well.

Plus Klopp has already shown his willingness to manage Salah's minutes (could do the same with TAA), when you know Kane will play a full 90 with Mourinho putting out a near enough second team in Europe.

          1. FPL_trail_runner
            • 3 Years

            This is just confirmation bias

If a purple patch existed then a player would never stop scoring ever once they started. Kane is an elite striker and has put up great number for most of his career ( but dipped in past 1.5 years) . Nobody can sustain the numbers he is putting up per 90min currently.

Burnley away from home is not a captain game, the underlying stats show it

And also say Spurs are overperforming in attack.

            1. F4L
              • 9 Years

Kane always overperforms, ever since he became a regular he's scored more goals than xG had him down for. In his best season he "over performed" by 9 goals. And now he's posting crazy expected assist stats as well.

I think you have your mind set on not captaining a Spurs attacker, only time will tell who made the right call.

The overperformance here suggest Kane and Son will get 35 goals this season each + 20 more assists

Its not the same type of overperformance

Whenever I think of captaining TAA, it's because Liverpool have a plum fixture and in that case, it's usually Salah who has the stronger appeal. With no Alison or VVD, I think it's just too much of a risk backing Liverpool CS with the captaincy.

      1. FPL_trail_runner
        • 3 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

Its not such a plum fixture imo, Sheffield are a bottom 6 team overall - but their defence isnt a bottom 6 team.

So id much rather bet against their attack, which is bottom 6 and liverpool keeping the cleansheet

A cleansheet for Liverpool will mean in most cases TAA gets bonus points due to his passing and creation. Even before any actual output

If that's what you feel, then for sure go for it. It's not a bad option, I mean TAA was 4th highest scoring player in the game last season. Nailing a slightly punty/out there captain pick is one of the most satisifying things that can happen in the game!

I've TAA and Robbo double up so hoping Liverpool get the CS

        Indeed!

What folly to look at underlying data which is the best longterm predictor of goals scored and conceded and indeed overall player performance

I will instead captain the player who scored the most points last week forever going forward whether or not they are finishing at a rate above Messi - which of course is for sure to continue.

Some, Trent has more shots on target and big chances

            + set pieces

+ Trent appears better suited to bonus

if i could only captain a Liverpool defender this week it would be Robertson.
Personally i think Son and Kane are the best options this week but as i have both i'm going to go with the crowd and Salah.

              good luck...

    Maupay Mitrovic Jimenez

    Steer Taylor Burke Ferguson

    A) bench him and play Taylor/ Burke and hope for a point or two and bank a transfer.
    B) Ferguson > Kilman and play him v Newcastle. I was happy to be patient and wait till he's fit but no news on him for a while.
    C) Burke > Grealish/Barkley. Then downgrade Podence back to a 4.5m mid later to free up cash.
