Top 10k FPL managers and FFS poll voters disagree on Kane’s captain credentials

Harry Kane‘s (£10.8m) tightened his hold over the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers in Gameweek 6.

The in-form Spurs man, currently the top-scoring Fantasy asset in any position, has proved to be the most popular captain at this level for the latest round of matches.

49.6% of managers inside the top 10k felt Kane was the best option for the armband, perhaps swayed by the fact that he has four goals in his last two Premier League trips to Burnley.

The most interesting part of Kane winning the captaincy debate at the top level of FPL this week is the fact that he was largely overlooked for the armband on a worldwide scale and in Fantasy Football Scout’s latest poll.

Just 20.8% captained Kane overall, while he only mustered the support of just 18.7% of the Fantasy Football Scout vote.

At this early stage of the season, it is still difficult to insist with cast-iron certainty that the top 10k always know better than everybody else but this is perhaps the first time in 2020/21 that we have a chance to really test their opinion against the masses.

The difference in opinion between the two groups of managers certainly makes Kane’s effective ownership in the top 10k rather ominous.

For the second week in a row, he has the highest figure in this department in the top 10k, with effective ownership of 139.9%.

Meanwhile, the people’s choice Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) is less of a force at this level than our polls previously indicated.

Despite winning the Scout captaincy poll and earning more armbands in the world than anyone else, the Egyptian has the second-highest effective ownership among the top 10k for Gameweek 6 (108.7%).

Even without the captaincy, Kane is now the most popular player among the top 10k anyway.

His standard ownership at this level increased by roughly 19 percentage points between the Gameweek 5 and 6 deadlines, rising from 70.4% to 89.2%.

That takes him past Salah, whose ownership among these managers has dropped from 80% to 72.7%.

That drop sees Son Heung-min (£9.4m) overtake him as the top 10k’s most fashionable midfielder, although the Egyptian is still ahead on effective ownership when we take captaincy into account.

This week’s saga surrounding the fitness of James Rodríguez (£8.0m) has, unsurprisingly, seen his stock drop at this level too. He remains the third-most-popular, but he has lost 10 percentage points of ownership among the top 10k.

Jack Grealish (£7.2m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m) appear to have been among the chief replacements for Everton’s playmaker, as their selection rates increased by 7.8 and 9.6 percentage points respectively.

The sales of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) have had an impact at the top end of FPL as well as the rest of the world.

He was owned by 39.8% of the top 10k for Gameweek 5, more than any other defender. With the Gameweek 6 deadline now behind us, Alexander-Arnold sits in just 27.9% of teams at this level, Tyrick Mitchell (£4.2m) and James Justin (£4.8m) overtaking him as the most fashionable defenders.

Meanwhile, Emiliano Martínez (£4.8m) has finally crept into the top 10k template, now the second-most-popular goalkeeper with 31.7% backing at this level, although he failed to keep a clean sheet in Friday’s meeting with Leeds.

Chip usage was not particularly heavy in the top 10k for Gameweek 6.

The Wildcard was the most-used, although it was only deployed by 4.9% of managers at this level.

Meanwhile, while it can be easy to assume top 10k managers at this stage of the season have made a strong start following heavy chip usage, it is to their credit that 46.6% of them are still yet to use any at all.

36.9% have used one chip, almost certainly the Wildcard in most cases, which has been used by 38.2% of top 10k managers.

Is Castagne -> Reguilon for 1 of 2 FT's too sideways a move?

Wanted to bring Reguilon in before his price rise tonight. :/

That first half sub was such a brilliant move by Bielsa. Think about it, the one unique quality about Leeds is the how their entire team links when there's a counter. Take one person off, it would affect the entire counter movement.

Yeah, I think what he means is take Struijk out of the team (red card) and with 10 men they wouldn't be able to function. Hence subbing him to protect the system.

This is very true. It's so misleading. The vast majority of the top 10K are in there because they have rode Kane and Son's points. Of course ownership and captaincy is going to be high. Likewise, if you haven't owned Kane / Son then your rank is likely to have suffered. That's why overall ownership / captaincy is lower. It's really quite obvious.

Ross Barkley (£6.0m) is our choice to capitalise on Leeds’ issues at the back, offering decent value and more shots on target than any Villa player other than Ollie Watkins this season.

Thanks FFS Scout picks. You told me that Leeds had defensive issues.

Some of the content here is not based on underlying stats

Leeds with cooper out held Wolves to 0.6xgc

And villa have a overperforming attack.

Barkley was picked here cos he scored a once in a season long range goal in the last min last week. Then leeds were said to have a poor defence to feed the narrative.

        What's the narrative?

        1. FPL_trail_runner
          • 3 Years
          3 years, 5 months ago

That Villa will continue to perform this well and all of there players are fpl assests to invest in

Grealish is the only player from them who is for sure in the debate to be a season keepr, Meslier also in the same bracket for goalie, the other Villa players will drift in and out of fpl points throughout the year. But yes the narrative was Martinez, Konsa, Target Grealish Barkley and Watkins were all fpl options.

All the underlying data suggested before tonight that Villa were overperforming

I and some others called this result (not 3-0 mind) and backed leeds in fpl.

            3 years, 5 months ago

Are you suggesting they're not FPL options? Based on one defeat to Leeds? Don't get me wrong I trust the scout picks as much as the next guy (i.e. not at all) but nobody truly expected Villa assets south of 6m to be 'season keepers'. One return in 3 would be great returns for that price. They were obviously going to lose at some point, doesn't mean they'll lose the next one, and those players listed will continue to get points.

            1. FPL_trail_runner
              • 3 Years
              3 years, 5 months ago

I mean it seemed here the only fpl options to consider buying this week (bar Kane/Son) were from Villa

              Martinez
              Konza Target
              Grealish Barkley
              Watkins

as the touted players to get in for defence or attack was overkill

And then the narrative was ' sure leeds have a poor defence' to justify it.

I think they're good picks for the season. We can't expect Salah levels of return for 6-7m priced players.

Villa were caught out by the sheer athleticism of Leeds tonight. The first half was very even. I'd still back them to do well most games.

I do too, will be some value in Villa this year for sure

Just they dont have 6 genuine fpl options and using 4 games to justify this was wrong.

Bandwagons happen, it's always been the case. Differentials do exist though, for one week only I fully expected Trossard to outscore Grealish for example. However, I wouldn't want to hold Trossard long term, whereas Grealish has good fixtures until Christmas basically. Also, if you see everyone jumping on Villa and you truly believe they're a trap, take that as a good opportunity to get one up on the crowd. We're all going for a higher rank, after all.

Overreaction yes but the result wasn't so strange. I posted earlier in the week about a Leeds win and others did too. Maybe not a 3-0 win, mind you, but enough not to jump all in on Villa assets. We all get some right and some wrong, including the Pro Pundits at the scout.

I agree that a Leeds win isn't a crazy result but I'm referring to the scoreline. Also fully agree that talk of tripling up on Villa was pure madness - Have to feel that Pool game was a one-off.

One thing I gathered from BlackBox this week is that the number of goals this season is drastically higher than previous seasons but the number of clean sheets at this point of the season is practically the same as last season. That means that the narrative about defences being weaker isn't necessarily true, especially now that teams are getting into their rhythm a bit more having played a few games. Instead, games are more of a slippery slope where defences are more prone to collapses IF they are already behind. As a United fan I vividly remember that 6-1 against City about 10 years ago - it was 3-1 going into the 90th minute. Lose faith, and it gets ugly quickly. That's what's happening now, on a much larger scale, to more clubs, much earlier than the 90th minute.

The attacking numbers Leeds keep putting up ( Liverpool, Man city and tonight) make Bamford super underpriced, even if he only returns 1 in 3.

However if I buy him for Brewster i cant fund Son to KDB as planned in week 9 to get this :

      Meslier
      Ayling Robbo Trent
      KDB Sterling Salah Hamez
      DCL Brewster Antonio

Makes me tempted to actually get Bamford and fund Son to Kdb by selling DCL for Wilson who could make DCL with pens

This isn't aimed at Leeds specifically but I feel like this season has really exposed a lot of pundits for the frauds they are. They wax lyrical about the winning team after any given game - not just talking about how well they played on the day, but how well they'll do this season and how great their players are. Then the same team will get hammered the following week and all the talk will be about how they're suddenly nowhere near as good as the team that beat them this week.

It's the equivalent of chasing points in FPL in that it takes no skill and it's all hindsight. The only difference is that I don't get paid many thousands of pounds to jerk my knee out of its socket, sadly.

I’m biased but Saints have been ok, get a result against palace (who we battered but couldn’t break down) and spurs game was freakish. Should have been 3/0 at half time then just gave up.

        Still expecting top half finish

I'd say Southampton have done alright so far but therein lies another problem. Everything is lumped into one extreme or the other these days with no middle ground. Southampton, after a poor second half against Spurs, were suddenly the worst team to ever grace the Prem. Tottenham last week after 20 minutes were title contenders! It's so tiresome and lacking any objectivity.

Total frauds. I don't know your age but this gets worse every year and had been going on a good while. Well done for noticing and caring, most just repeat whatever the BS pundit had just said and change without any accountability just like they do!

I'm mid-20s but have seen it for years. It's 90% reactionary stuff based on who grabs headlines each weekend and very little analysis actually takes place. The worst thing is when some random nobody has 1 good performance and they spend 10 minutes going on about all his top class attributes, then you never hear about him again all season because it was a fluke. Playing FPL means I ain't falling for that too often!

Social media has resulted in us hearing from these frauds - as you put it - on a regular basis.

I was talking about TV pundits as I'm not really keen on most social media. I'm sure it applies there too but at least most on Twitter won't be getting paid bucketloads for their "expert opinion".

ah ok. Most pundits seem to be ex-footballers it seems and I'm sure they're under pressure to make explosive statements so they land a contract / are invited back. They're not going to dampen the enthusiasm after an immediate result.

Most ex-pros simply aren't that smart. Being a great player doesn't make you a great analyst or even an expert on how to play the game at a strategic level. This is why so many great players are awful managers. But of course being a former player gets you an easy gig behind the cameras.

Just want to start off by stating I'm not here to defend Pro Pundits. Everyone knows some of the content is basically filler.

However, as readers/viewers/players of the game, it's also down to us to wade through the crap and find what's useful. And there will always be value in seeing what the Pro Pundits believe, even if it's literally staring at the lot of them walking directly into traps. Part of the psychology of the game. And every now and again, you'll find something genuinely insightful that could be a benefit to your team for this week and beyond. Personally this season, I watch FPL Wire every week and it's great because not only are they 3 good FPL players, they also have wildly contrasting styles so you get a much wider perspective. Zophar and Lateriser TOGETHER give you a full view of a player/team, especially if they disagree. I haven't watched much of Blackbox but what I have watched has been fantastic and Mark and Az have touched on concepts which haven't occurred to me at all, many times. On this site, Captain Sensible is probably the most meaningful article each week and Jan (can't spell his surname) strikes me as someone who knows what he's talking about, always, even if he gets it wrong.

Again, not defending the rubbish, just saying that there's plenty of good stuff out there if you can find it.

OK I apologise for some reason I thought this was a dig at the pundits on the scout network. Sorry about that. However I'd like to think my points still stand

No worries, I should have specified TV pundits. I actually completely agree with you on FPL Wire and Captain Sensible being the most consistently useful resources (I haven't seen much of Black Box yet except Az's drunken wildcard stream which was class).

I'd say most hardcore FPL players and pundits put more genuine and original thought into their analysis than most ex-footballers on TV do. When Match of the Day is on I usually grab a drink or check my phone while the 'experts' are talking.

Has the boat sailed with DCL?

Had him for his 17 pointer vs West Brom and so stupidly took him out on wildcard ( didn’t really miss a whole lot of points tbf)

Can get him in this week tho for free for Maupay should I? ( he’s rising tonight guaranteed)
