How patience in Liverpool defence can help me bounce back from FPL Gameweek 6

Gameweek 6 was one of my worst in Fantasy Premier League history but it’s not the Gameweek score that maketh the manager, it is your response to it that really matters.

When I started writing this article, I was sitting on a net score of 11 points (yes, eleven) from nine players (yes, nine) including my captain Mohamed Salah (£12.4m). Son Heung-min (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£10.9m) added 15 points to that on Monday but a score of just 27 is not what I was hoping for at all.

I know I am not alone in scores like this for Gameweek 6, so I am writing about what went wrong and how I cope with that moving forward.

Ironically, I had really high hopes for this week. Triple Liverpool at home to a struggling Sheffield Untied side, the ever reliable captain Salah, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.7m) in great form, and appealing fixtures for the likes of Mat Ryan (£4.5m), Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.8m) and Ross Barkley (£6.0m). On paper, it was arguably my strongest-looking 11 of the season.

So with this is mind, I think it is so important for us to remember not all good decisions lead to good results in FPL. Ultimately, we pick our teams but we have absolutely no control over what happens on the pitch. If our player gets injured, misses a sitter or gets sent off (I’m looking at you Lucas) then that not something we have any influence over.

I decided to look at how we can look at bad scores objectively and work out how to improve our rank going forward rather than letting it spoil our weekend and make emotional decisions with regards to the next set of fixtures.

Here is my three-point plan for such scenarios.

  1. Identify the difference between bad decisions and what is bad luck. Last week’s score has no effect on next week’s score, but performances and statistics do. Rather than looking at a players bad score, look at his contribution on the pitch. The Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area is perfect for this.
  2. Try not to chase points. Jumping from player to player chasing points that have been and gone can be a frustrating circle. For example, hopping from the likes of Mitrovic, Ollie Watkins (£6.0m), Callum Wilson (£6.5m) and Patrick Bamford (£5.9m) is so tempting when we see all of these players returning double-digit hauls over the first six Gameweeks. But often we end up wasting precious transfers and missing all these points completely. I like to pick a player over a period of matches and trust they can provide me the value I am looking for. For example, I had a pre-conceived plan of sticking with Mitrovic until Gameweek 7 because of strong fixtures. I like to stay true to my game plans and if it doesn’t work so be it.
  3. Embrace the highs and lows. If you can’t enjoy a thrilling game because your captain hasn’t returned or you are secretly willing one of your forwards to score against the team you support, it is time to take a step back. After all, we play FPL to enhance our enjoyment of the game we love. Bad weeks are inevitable!

FORWARD PLANNING

A big talking point right now is what we do with Liverpool defensive assets now that Virgil van Dijk (£6.4m) is ruled out for a sustained period. As a Fantasy manager who has built a lot of success on the defensive double-up over the last two seasons, I feel it’s right I touch on this.

What we are seeing in the first six weeks is season like no other. We have seen some freak results and it seems teams have forgotten how to defend. However, I believe we will soon see a return to normality and Premier League managers will address the defensive issues. Manchester United’s rather dull, stalemate draw with Chelsea is perhaps is a good early example of this.

I think it is important to stick to my identity as a FPL manager, to give Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) more time to deliver the returns we know they are capable of.

As the old saying goes ‘You live by the sword, you die by the sword’. I was happy with what I saw from an attacking point of view again in Gameweek and, with Alisson (£5.9m) back in the side, I am still hopeful some clean sheets are imminent. As managers continue to ship out the full-backs in their droves, I’m hoping the patient approach will pay off once again.

Just for this season they should allow clubs to use their fans as players if there's too many injuries/covid cases.

A is where I'm heading from an upgrade on Havertz - just switched TAA to Dallas still have Zaha and not folding.

Think Chilwell excitement premature and Puli needs a bit of time too.

TAA will come good I'm sure but just don't see him value right now.

      Really decent

One issue is 4 at the back. There's so much value up top right now that I'd want 3 there as a matter of course.

Think - and have for a while - that Bamford is the perfect 8th attacker type possibly rotating with a mid. Think Leeds will be up there most of the season and he'll continue to get plenty of tap ins - the worldies are just a bonus.

Yus. As of now, you have to pick between Targett, Konsa, Coufal. Although, if you have Martinez in goal, choose a WHU def. Don't fancy doubling op any def atm

They've been impressive, to say the least. Adding to the good fixture run, their def would be huge points pool. If you can tho, find the extra 0.5 to get in Cresswell. He's the best of the bunch.

Yup, saw him play. He is going forward and putting in long crosses a lot, like a lot lot. Still the best def in WHU

    A) Play Maupay (TOT A) 343, with Kilman (CRY H)
    B) Bench him 442, with PVA and Kilman

    Best option this GW?

Fixtures still look great for PVA he just needs to force his way into the team. Would see how he gets on in the Wolves game and possibly the home game after before moving on. He could be an outstanding differential once he starts.

That was the reason I took him on. But did not expect him coming back on requiring 2 GWs, I'm confident he will start this GW, so would be assessing his performance. He actually played really well in the limited time he came on in GW6, had an assist attempt.

Do you see TOT conceding against BRI, after Brighton's performance against WBA H. Although ik TOT home record this season has been terrible

    Martinez
    Robo Semedo Lamptey Mitchell Dunne
    Son Salah Foden Mahrez Burke
    Ings DCL Jimi

    1 FT and 1.5 itb

    Problems
    1. No Kane and Chilwell
    2. Foden might blank after 90 min last night
    3. Mahrez blanking twice in a row so don't like him much as there are other good cheaper options

So how should I proceed here? Ready to take one hit. Please suggest

      No Kane is scary.

      Jimi > Kane
Mahrez > Cheapish mid. Costa/McGinn etc

More likely that Foden will start.

If you can't take the rotation you need to drop City assets because they don't suit your playstyle. The entire point of Mahrez and Foden is you start them every week and by the end of the season you find yourself with an excellent value asset despite being rotated.

True but that's just the inherent risk of City mids. I Sold Foden last week for Rodriguez - better reliability of selection and probs higher returns but Foden is still a really tidy pick as we saw. He's cheap enough that a benching here or there isn't much of an issue.

So keeping Foden and moving out Mahrez seems sensible

You have two city rn. Selling them would be tough, as, after 2 GWs, they have an excellent fixture run. Jimi off for Antonio (if fit) is a good move, in short term. Keep Foden, he has been impressive in his impact on the team. Although this is an unpopular opinion, ship lamps off, he is amazing, but BRI is not keeping CS in any way and his actual underlying numbers are quite subpar. You can get Chilly for him. Mahrez is the only city asset that I can recommend shipping out. Try getting one of the AVL boys. Mitchell is a rotation risk and Dunne won't play, so you need at least 1 reserve playing def.

What should be my move this GW? I am even thinking of saving an FT as I am not clear who to move out. Only problem in that is no Kane. But I guess Jimi might match him considering that I have to take hit to transfer Kane in

Whatever people are saying, Palace has looked sound in def, even if they concede, it won't be by much, so Jimi is not getting a significant haul according to me. Kane is playing a BRI def, which is looking really poor, especially after I saw that WBA second half.

I recommend you to take the hit because getting Kane in any later won't make a lotta sense, given their good run of games are ending in GW10.

You can’t remove players if they play 90 mins mid week. Foden didn’t play 90 in the league last week so he’ll be fine

      Similar sort of set up

Just lost Jim - very reluctantly - for Kane. On your set up I'd go to your choice of Zaha (on him here) or Grealish from Mahrez and Jim to Kane.

Think DCL and Ings offer value enough up top and Kane the oomph.

    Guaita - Forster
    Semedo- Chilwell - Reguilón
Son - Salah - JRod- Grealish
    Kane - DCL - Maupay
    Forster ( Lampety Bissouma Dunne)
    2 FT and 0.4 itb
    Any Thoughts ?

      Maupay to Bamford

Just think Bamford is looking like a really good long term hold. Still value at current price, Leeds will continue to score and he's at the pointy end and will get the tap ins. Maupay not a bad option - it's simply that Leeds are the better team and more likely to offer the long term hold imo

defo yes. Chilly is looking really explosive, and the mids and defs are handing him the ball to take it up the final third a lot, even when James is on the pitch.
