Unpredictable start to the FPL season making Football Index decisions hard to call

Sponsored by Football Index

Six matches into the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season and it’s fair to say that many managers are not happy.

The football has been so unpredictable, and the results so varied, that finding players producing consistent returns, week in, week out, has proved… tricky.

In fact, it’s boiled down to owning Harry Kane. Or Son Heung-min. And ideally both.

Even FPL experts have been left, at best, bemused.

So imagine what it’s like for someone trying to use FPL to guide his moves in another setting, Football Index.

In case you’re still not sure, Football Index (FI) is a kind of stock market where people use real money to bet on football.

You buy shares in individual players whose value can rise or fall depending on their performance both on and off the field. I’m new to FI and it’s beginning to show.

I’m still in profit, but it’s a figure in decline at present with the widespread unpredictability the season has brought so far.

Dividends – money paid out for the performance or media profile of my players – have been my saviour. Without them, I’d be making a loss right now.

I need to shake up my portfolio. Bring in new faces.

The problem is, only two of the seven players I currently own shares in would make me a profit if I were to sell.

It’s not like these players are doing badly. I own FI shares in three of the top 10 FPL forwards – Danny Ings, Raul Jimenez and Callum Wilson.

All three have had solid starts to the season, scoring four goals apiece. But it’s beginning to dawn on me that solid just doesn’t cut it on FI.

Traders don’t look just for solid performances. They consider many other factors that have an impact on the Index. It’s a bit like the FPL tendency towards knee-jerk decisions that some managers can’t help but display. Slow and steady might win the race, but crash, bang wallop is also a strongly adopted approach on FI, with big haulers paying out big dividends and attracting big trader interest.

As a result, I have three players in good form who would make me a loss if I were to sell them today.

And the less said about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the better.

My long-term bet in the Arsenal forward’s value has gotten off on the wrong foot, as Mikel Arteta continues to flirt with the idea of turning the Gunners into a David Moyes-like unit so intent on stopping the opposition that they forget how to actually play.

It’s a notion so dull that even Moyes doesn’t subscribe to it anymore, although Frank Lampard is another who seems to be getting a massive kick out of clean sheets.

Which means that another in my portfolio, Mason Mount, is just not cutting it at the moment with his reduced playing time.

He and Aubameyang are getting close to being sold now. The former should make me a profit, while the latter will not. At all. His sale will hurt, but it really needs to be done with Arteta’s current gameplan.

Then I can look to Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area and try to find the next big thing with the form and fixtures to direct my strategy on FI.

But it’s not going to be easy. The three teams with the best upcoming schedule are Crystal Palace (drab), Everton (squad issues) and Aston Villa (bubble burst?).

Chelsea and Manchester United are up there too and have Champions League football to offer the prospect of a tidy midweek dividend for decent performers.

But their players aren’t cheap and, as mentioned, Lampard’s current flirtation with owning a fleet of parked buses has compromised the otherwise excellent pedigree of his attackers.

Whatever I end up doing is likely to come with a short-term loss. But, with the bigger picture in good shape.

Who to go for at Man Utd, who could potentially stay in until new year.

    Bruno
    Rashford
    Greenwood

    Martial doesn't float my boat.

Rashford & Bruno are equal for me, but the 1m price difference means Rashford is probably the best value overall, Greenwood is a rotation risk.

keep, Greenwood might have sorted his attitude out (rumour?) and could get playing time.
Wouldn't play this week so hope you have a good sub in.

Imagine a game where you have 3 closed boxes and there is a prize in one of them. You choose one box but before you open it the host opens one of the other two boxes which is empty and ask you "do you want to change box that you picked for the other box that is left"? What do you do? Do you think that changing your decision matters?

Initially you think that there is no diference between sticking to box that you pick or changing decision for the other box as it looks like 50/50 decision but...it isn't 🙂
Sticking to your original pick gives you only 1/3 chance for winning as changing your decision gives you 2/3 chance to get the prize.

Yep. You move from a 1/3 chance to a 2/3 chance because if you switch, you win if you picked a non prize box in the first place (2/3 chance).

Does this have anything to do with FPL though?

The funny conundrum of this Monty Hall problem is that it is actually better to always switch.

You're basically making a choice at the beginning of 1/3. If you stick you're keeping those same odds of 1/3.

If you switch, you're increasing your odds to be 2/3 because one of the boxes no longer has a prize and is removed.

      3. StoichkovFPL

Box A, B, C. Lets say you picked box A.

If you stick there are 3 scenarios:
        1. You picked prize in box A (box B was opened empty and box C is empty) - you won
        2. You picked empty box A (box B was opened empty and box C has prize) - you lost
        3. You picked empty box A (box C was opened empty and box B has prize) - you lost
So only in option 1 you win.

If you change there are 3 scenarios:
        1. You picked prize in box A (box B was opened empty and box C which now is yours is empty) - you lost
        2. You picked empty box A (box B was opened empty and box C that you swaped has prize) - you won
        3. You picked empty box A (box C was opened empty and box B that you swaped has prize) - you won
So you win in 2 of 3 scenarios

        🙂

Aren't you missing 1 outcome in each set of scenarios?

          If you stick:
          4. You picked prize in box A (box C was opened empty and box B is empty) - you won

          If you change:
          4. You picked prize in box A (box C was opened empty and box B which now is yours is empty) - you lost

No. its same scenario. Name of the boxes "C" or "B" are just to make it easier.
There are 3 boxes so there only can be 3 scenarios: Prize in box A or in box B or in box C. You can pick just box A or B or C. All 3 possibilities if stick and 3 scenarios if chane are there.
            No other scenarios possible

By that logic you can say that your 2nd and 3rd scenarios are the same, and the actual 3rd scenario is picking the box that was eliminated.

              The actual situation is:
              Box A 1/3
              Box B 1/3
              Box C 1/3

You chose one of them, they eliminate one:
              Box I 1/2
              Box II 1/2

              That's all it is

The situation is 1/3 at the start, that's the main thing. If you pick a loser (2/3) and then swap you'll win.

                Box A has the prize

You pick B and the host removes C, if you swap you win

You pick C and the host then removes B, if you swap you win

Same works if you pick box C

You have to seperate scenario and outcome. There are still 4 possible scenarios that are equally likely which gives us 2 different outcomes (win or lose), each with a probability of 1/2. The correct option is still to switch doors but because you now have information which makes it a 50/50 choice instead of 1/3. I think.

Damn, it was a long time since i took a math class.

There are 4 scenarios in both actually:

          4. You picked prize in box A (box C was opened empty and box B is empty) - you won
          2/4 = 50%

          -------------
          4. You picked prize in box A (box C was opened empty and box B which now is yours is empty) - you lose
          2/4 = 50%

So it is the same probability. Which is pretty obvious

There's only 3 boxes so only 3 scenarios. If you stick then you need to have picked the winner from the outset which is a 33.33% chance. If you picked an empty box which is a 66.66% chance then you'll always win by switching.

Okay, yeah. That's conditional probability then.
You have to look at it as a whole, the way Stoichkov presented it is wrong. At the point after elimination (when looked at in isolation) the probability is 50%, only if you consider the initial situation (and the fact they can't discard the prize box) does a switch appear more likely to succeed

This is called the Monty Hall problem and people often incorrectly think that not switching isn’t the optimal option. Makes sense when you extend the problem to a thousand boxes and then open 998 empty boxes and offer up the choice again.

After the host reveals the empty box and there are 2 boxes left, wouldn't the odds should be 1/2 and not 2/3?

When you pick the first box, the odds were 1/3 ... if you were allowed to re-select the same box (as opposed to changing) would the odds of that choice also how be 1/2

You always switch. The simplest explanation I've had is that the only way you win if you keep your original box was picking the right box in the first place which is a 1/3 shot. If you picked the wrong box (a 2/3 shot) then you'll always win by switching

I'm torn on some options here with my 2FT. Obviously pending news on Antonio's fitness.

    A) Maupay > Antonio (roll 1FT)
    B) Maupay > Bamford (roll 1FT)
    C) Pulisic > Zaha (roll 1FT)
    D) Maupay, Puli > Antonio/ Bam, Zaha (2FT)
    E) Maupay, Puli > Adams, Rashford (2FT)

I know Pulisic *could* come good and with Ziyech back... but he will be sharing any returns across a pool of Werner, Puli, Ziyech, Havertz so I wonder if it's better to shift to a player more likely to score/ haul - i.e. Rash or Zaha.

    2FT 0.5itb
    Martinez
    Robbo, Chilwell, Dallas
    Salah, Son, Pulisic*, Grealish
    Kane, DCL, Maupay*
    (Forster) (KWP, Stephens, Braithwaite)

    Cheers

Genuinely stumped with this (2FT) 0ITB

    Martinez/Forster

    Chilwell/Dallas/KWP/Targett/Lamptey
    Salah/Sterling/Son/JRod/McGinn
    Kane/Wilson/Brewster

    Happy to keep Wilson.

Went double Villa def on my wildcard in GW5 and now considering Targett to Coufal just to not burn a transfer...

i'm reasonably content with McGinn as well, all four of the cheap defs are rotation material with him too.

I'll be selling Son/Kane for a Man U attacker soon so can upgrade him if needs be.

    Chillwell / Saiss / Justin / Lamptey / Mitchell
    Salah / Mane / Son / Rodriguez / Jorginho
    Kane / DCL / Brewster
    1FT, 0.3 ITB

    Couple questions:
    A) How is Justins and Mitchells gametime looking? Are they still expected to be dropped?
    B) Lamptey no clean sheets and diminishing returns. Worth keeping still?
    C) Kilman looking to keep his place? Is he a real option?
    D) Is it worth downgrading Jorginho to a 4.5 to upgrade Brewster to Bamford?

Probably Pulisic. But, I have a feeling he's going to do well this season especially.

He also looked very threatening when he came on last night and of course scored a goal in his 20-odd minutes on the pitch.

So, I shall be keeping and find another way of bringing Rashy in

I never pick the right captain. I may as well flip a coin. I have Salah at the mo, but consensus of opinion is leaning towards Son.

I'm going Kane captain. But, Son is equally good choice (better in some eyes).

Gotta captain Jorghino surely? Might not even be on penalties anymore after another miss last night.

I'd probably bench Jorginho as he is almost entirely reliant on penalties whereas the others have threat from open play. In which case with the rest of your team I probably wouldn't bother having him at all, get a cheaper midfielder and use the money elsewhere but each to their own.

      Who’s everyone’s captain this week?

        Kane (c) and Son (v)

But, honestly could swap them around as there is practically nothing between them. Penalties for Kane swung it for me though.

....and then the spurs game gets cancelled due to covid spike and boom...no captain 🙂
