Dugout Discussion

Foden benched for second consecutive Premier League match

Phil Foden (£6.6m) finds himself on the Manchester City bench for the second time in two Gameweeks as his side travels to face Sheffield United.

Despite coming into Gameweek 7 as the Citizens’ top option for shots in the box, big chances and shots on target this season, Foden will have hope for an impact substitute role again.

That said, the England international did the job last time out, coming onto score and register six points in a 1-1 draw with West Ham in Gameweek 6.

And, of course, this back-to-back benching is sure to slightly sure up his chances of start in Gameweek 8, although you never can tell with Pep Guardiola.

The two most popular Fantasy asset in Manchester City’s squad is in the starting line-up though, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) lining up in central midfield.

At 7.3% ownership, Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) remains something of a differential, despite averaging 5.8 points per game this season.

The Englishman is joined the front-three by Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m) and Ferran Torres (£6.9m) and it will be interesting to see if he occupies the false-nine position again with Sergio Aguero (£10.3m) and Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m) still both out injured.

Pre-match reports suggest that Torres could be leading the line, as he did against Marseilles, which might benefit Sterling better, considering his ability to cause problems in wide areas.

Guardiola confirmed the Spaniard is occupying the striker role in his pre-match comments.

Meanwhile, Rhian Brewster (£4.5m) starts up-front for Sheffield United again. It has only taken him attracting 6.8% ownership to be the Blades’ most fashionable option for Gameweek 7.

Sheffield United XI: Ramsdale; Stevens, Egan, Basham; Lowe, Osborn, Ampadu, Berge, Baldock; Brewster, McBurnie.

Manchester City XI: Ederson; Cancelo, Laporte, Dias, Walker; Rodrigo, De Bruyne; Torres, B Silva, Mahrez; Sterling.

Yet he kept Podence for all this time? Come on lol no one besides the managers had any idea that Saiss would be benched for Nouri, Foden has been great for City and while we all know the Pep roulette he could still do well and for 6.5m he’s definitely not a bad option if he comes on for 30mins and gets a return. RJames could start this week and when he starts he generally returns. If we all had a crystal ball the game would be easy, but people bashing other players decisions on here has been the worst it’s ever been IMO

I kept Podence who started and actually looked very good on the eye. Was quite unlucky last game. For info i gave him one last chance and he delivered.

I did say Saiss was a suprise but it had been coming as mentioned on here and the wolves forum.

James was a very bad pick. People making an assumption that their most reliable player and captain was going to be dropped for James based on nothing. Azpi wasnt match fit at the start.

Foden plays for Pep and has never been a regular. Sure he can be explosive and if he looked to start regular then great. Playing players who may not start from week to week doesn’t make sense

I think nobody expected Saiss to be benched for Nouri but they expected him to be benched for Marcal so whichever way you look at it he was expected to be benched last night even this site didn't have him in the starting line up. He is no longer an FPL option.

Foden is a great player but he just isn't a nailed starter and for a 6.5m midfielder that is a lot of money to be sitting on the bench but if people are happy with him coming off the bench they so be it.That said I think he will start next week against Liverpool.

James could start today and he couldn't but I prefer to have players in my team who I am confident as one can be that they will start

Have Mitchell as well but fully expect him to get his place back. I've 2FT so it's just a matter of seeing how to sort them out.

Foden/Saiss to Kilman/Grealish seem to be my initial thinking.

        Saiss won't play next week

James & Foden are just a rotation nightmare so for that reason alone they are not viable options in FPL

You need to pick players who you are confident will start the vast majority of the games and these 3 don't fall into that bracket

The cross was directed to Neto, defender won the aerial duel, fell to A-N who put it away. Podence never intended to and never did pass it to the goalscorer. It isn't defined as an assist under the rules of the game.

"And, of course, this back-to-back benching is sure to slightly sure up his chances of start in Gameweek 8, although you never can tell with Pep Guardiola."

After so many years, I expect better from FFS to be honest. It started with a number of articles on this site saying that Foden was 'expected' to start GW7 based on the fact that he was benched in GW6, totally ignoring the fact that he played 90 minutes away in Europe midweek. And now he's benched in GW7 we get this quote, again before the European games in midweek.

Best forget about minutes with Foden as we all knew was going to get benched semi-regularly but hoped he would return enough when he did play to be worthwhile. Limited minutes are already factored in to the equation.

Just look at returns over an extended period instead. Either he averages out enough points to justify his place in your team at that price or he doesn't.

Aye, he may well not be worth it.

But selling him because he didn't start a given game (or given games) is silly when that should have been something people accepted would happen when buying him.

A decision to sell should be based on those average returns, for good or ill. And obviously what you think his average returns will be over City's upcoming good fixtures.

          • 13 Years

Yeah true. Fact of the matter is though that it's easier to score points when you play more. So if he's consistently getting benched in the PL then that's worth considering.

I do agree with the Bowen, he may be the prefect replacement tbf but I still think Foden comes on this game and if he passes the eye test he isn’t a huge fire to put out at 6.5m, if he doesn’t and city smash Sheff then he’s probably gone

Better options for that price. How long is Antonio expected to be out for?

I suspect he is definitely back after the IB and maybe for the Fulham game as well

It's official. Mahrez is on my watchlist. Looks like Pep has finally came to his sense. It was about time. Right before he moves back to Barcelona

Mahrez has been poor so far. Slows them down so much.

Slows then down? Explain to a mere mortal, please...

Last week for example he could have squared it to Raz but took a touch too much and got tackled

Holds ball too much and trying those fancy dribbles when he should pass or push forward in full speed. He is too selfish aswell.

Did he slow Leicester down with his fancy dribbles, then? Leicester the fast-breaking team?

He is not slowing them down. After Sterling he is their biggest goal threat

    a, Saïss -> Zouma
    b. Saïss + Jiménez -> Kilman + Werner
    c. keep Saïss

    Martínez
    TAA, Saïss, Lamptey
    Son, Salah, Fernandes, Grealish
    Ings, Bamford, Jiménez

    Button, Burke, Mitchell, Dunne
2 free transfer, 0.1 million in the bank

Definitely not C. You have only 2 nailed defenders. I wouldn't touch that LCB/LWB rotation on Wolves as long as Kilman isn't my 5th defender. Yes, he's nailed in the short term, but I don't like to spend a FT on defenders regularly.

      So, A. Or Saiss -> Coufal/Cresswell

What difference will it make if games are behind closed doors and squads are isolated from nearly everyone and tested regularly?

If squads are isolated they can play. Can't do it if they are at home with families though.

He certainly did and could well do it again this week but never ideal hoping a player you own makes an appearance from the bench and scores
