Dugout Discussion

Foden benched for second consecutive Premier League match

Phil Foden (£6.6m) finds himself on the Manchester City bench for the second time in two Gameweeks as his side travels to face Sheffield United.

Despite coming into Gameweek 7 as the Citizens’ top option for shots in the box, big chances and shots on target this season, Foden will have hope for an impact substitute role again.

That said, the England international did the job last time out, coming onto score and register six points in a 1-1 draw with West Ham in Gameweek 6.

And, of course, this back-to-back benching is sure to slightly sure up his chances of start in Gameweek 8, although you never can tell with Pep Guardiola.

The two most popular Fantasy asset in Manchester City’s squad is in the starting line-up though, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) lining up in central midfield.

At 7.3% ownership, Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) remains something of a differential, despite averaging 5.8 points per game this season.

The Englishman is joined the front-three by Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m) and Ferran Torres (£6.9m) and it will be interesting to see if he occupies the false-nine position again with Sergio Aguero (£10.3m) and Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m) still both out injured.

Pre-match reports suggest that Torres could be leading the line, as he did against Marseilles, which might benefit Sterling better, considering his ability to cause problems in wide areas.

Guardiola confirmed the Spaniard is occupying the striker role in his pre-match comments.

Meanwhile, Rhian Brewster (£4.5m) starts up-front for Sheffield United again. It has only taken him attracting 6.8% ownership to be the Blades’ most fashionable option for Gameweek 7.

Sheffield United XI: Ramsdale; Stevens, Egan, Basham; Lowe, Osborn, Ampadu, Berge, Baldock; Brewster, McBurnie.

Manchester City XI: Ederson; Cancelo, Laporte, Dias, Walker; Rodrigo, De Bruyne; Torres, B Silva, Mahrez; Sterling.

I still think at this early stage of the season it's more meaningful to look at overall ownerships. Quite obvious KDB would have low ownership in the top 10K considering people wouldn't be in the top 10K if they were dragging 11.5m worth of deadwood

Don't think you get it. The top 10K now are not 'elite' managers of some sort - they're the people with the highest points so far. So they must have had players that scored high points, like Son, or Kane, or Salah. KDB got a haul in GW2 when he was low-owned and has blanked ever since. If you've had 11.5m worth of blanks in your team, unlikely you've got enough points to sit in top 10K

Without checking the figures that's presumably the highest owned City asset, by some distance? You can sort of understand though that people have had other priorities. Most of the game probably own Salah, Kane and Son. Most probably still own TAA or Robertson or both. KDB then has to contend with Sterling, Mane, Bruno, Rashford, Vardy etc for limited budget.

Not saying he's a bad pick - I'm retrospectively saying that ownership is quite normal, in fact it's strangely high for an expensive asset that's not done anything since his first game. If he does get going today then congrats to you for being an early adopter and by next week it'll probably be 20+% ownership

Having had to rely on both Mitchell and Saiss playing to actually field 11 this week, I now hope that Brewster does the unheard of - score a goal as he is my only sub. Otherwise, 9 players out of 11 with a Brewster 1pt off the bench will be upsetting

Don't own either Foden or Mahrez. But Mahrez is clearly a better player than Foden.

Foden is a hype machine. For someone that Pep called the 'most talented player he has seen' then Foden ain't shown it on the pitch nor does he play enough games to suggest he is that talented.

He's too slow on the ball always slows down the attacks on the right. Bernado on the right would have been better.

Comparing once TOTY Mahrez who won Leicester the League (Vardy and Kante the other 2 integral) and young Foden who still has a lot to prove. Its ridiculous.

Btw, I own Foden and although I hate Pep, I accept Mahrez is far the better player.

I think City need to return to previous years xg numbers for the Foden rotation to be worth it.
