Dugout Discussion

Foden benched for second consecutive Premier League match

Phil Foden (£6.6m) finds himself on the Manchester City bench for the second time in two Gameweeks as his side travels to face Sheffield United.

Despite coming into Gameweek 7 as the Citizens’ top option for shots in the box, big chances and shots on target this season, Foden will have hope for an impact substitute role again.

That said, the England international did the job last time out, coming onto score and register six points in a 1-1 draw with West Ham in Gameweek 6.

And, of course, this back-to-back benching is sure to slightly sure up his chances of start in Gameweek 8, although you never can tell with Pep Guardiola.

The two most popular Fantasy asset in Manchester City’s squad is in the starting line-up though, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) lining up in central midfield.

At 7.3% ownership, Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) remains something of a differential, despite averaging 5.8 points per game this season.

The Englishman is joined the front-three by Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m) and Ferran Torres (£6.9m) and it will be interesting to see if he occupies the false-nine position again with Sergio Aguero (£10.3m) and Gabriel Jesus (£9.3m) still both out injured.

Pre-match reports suggest that Torres could be leading the line, as he did against Marseilles, which might benefit Sterling better, considering his ability to cause problems in wide areas.

Guardiola confirmed the Spaniard is occupying the striker role in his pre-match comments.

Meanwhile, Rhian Brewster (£4.5m) starts up-front for Sheffield United again. It has only taken him attracting 6.8% ownership to be the Blades’ most fashionable option for Gameweek 7.

Sheffield United XI: Ramsdale; Stevens, Egan, Basham; Lowe, Osborn, Ampadu, Berge, Baldock; Brewster, McBurnie.

Manchester City XI: Ederson; Cancelo, Laporte, Dias, Walker; Rodrigo, De Bruyne; Torres, B Silva, Mahrez; Sterling.

Captaining Sterling when Salah/Son/Kane have those fixtures was just trying to be too clever though.

Surely upside chasing would be when the fixtures change, not when Salah/Kane and co also have a good fixture?

He is miles behind and chasing.

Your GW11 OR has a correlation coefficient of 0.8 with your final GW 38 OR.

It is not perfect, but it is a good indicator.

In FPL, you ned to get to be fairly highly ranked by GW11ish if you want to finish Top 10k. A by highly ranked I mean Top 500k. He is miles off.

Google Marc Rubinstein and look for his twitter thread on it. He ran the maths on the correlation coefficients at each GW.

Marc is a City hedge fund manager. The guy is smart and makes a hell of a lot of money out of using mathematics in his trading.

Meh this is just untrue. Loads of people have been able to make top 10K even if they're at 1M OR with just 10 weeks left.

            Loads......

How many is loads. 1000? 5000?

The anecdotal evidence is strong on statements like that because people who achieve it brag about it on forums like this. You never hear about the guy who goes from 100k to 500k because who brags about crap performance.

I mean clearly it's a middle ground, your points don't contradict each other. Correlation is based on the majority and will be applicable to the majority. The 99th percentile climbing millions in rank due to triple captaining Antonio for 78 points don't change that. Anyone can be that guy, but most people won't be

You've gone from saying 'loads' to 'some'. What you mean is a 'small minority'

As I said, 0.80 does not mean a *perfect* correlation, but it does indicate how the start in FPL makes a significant difference

So what you're basically saying is you're more likely do well if you're already doing well. I don't think u need mathematical models for that.

That's a simplistic way to look at things. A lot happens in the latter stages of a season, there is generally increased variance as teams get increasingly desperate/start visiting the beach, most experienced managers play they chips, etc.
