Pickford benched as £4.0m FPL defender Nkounkou deputises for banned Digne

An under-strength Everton will attempt to bounce back to winning ways at St James’ Park this afternoon, following their first defeat of the campaign against Southampton.

The Toffees face Newcastle United in the second of four Premier League matches to take place on Sunday, with kick-off on Tyneside at 14:00 GMT.

Carlo Ancelotti is without the suspended Lucas Digne (£6.1m) and Richarlison (£7.8m) this afternoon, while James Rodriguez (£7.9m) and Seamus Coleman (£4.9m) miss out through injury.

Budget Fantasy Premier League defenders Jonjoe Kenny (£4.3m) and Niels Nkounkou (£4.0m) are brought into the full-back positions in the absence of the aforementioned first-team regulars.

That defensive duo are among five changes that Ancelotti has made from the Gameweek 6 defeat on the south coast.

Andre Gomes (£5.5m) and Fabian Delph (£4.9m) are recalled in central midfield, while the most notable alteration sees Robin Olsen (£4.5m) replace the benched Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) between the posts.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.7m), who blanked for the first time this season in that defeat at Southampton, starts up front.

Cenk Tosun (£6.0m) returns from a lengthy lay-off and is among the substitutes.

As for the hosts, Steve Bruce makes one change to the team that drew 1-1 at Wolves last Sunday.

Sean Longstaff (£4.8m) comes into the centre of midfield in place of Ryan Fraser (£5.7m), who drops to the bench.

Jamaal Lascelles (£4.4m) has recovered from a knock to start in the heart of the defence for the Magpies.

Digne and Rodriguez were the most-sold FPL assets of Gameweek 7, with each player transferred out by over 400,000 Fantasy managers ahead of Friday’s deadline.

Only Calvert-Lewin and Callum Wilson (£6.5m) have double-digit ownerships among the two starting XIs today.

Newcastle United XI: Darlow, Schar, Lascelles, Fernandez, Lewis, Hendrick, S Longstaff, Murphy, Almiron, Saint-Maximin, Wilson

Everton XI: Olsen, Kenny, Keane, Mina, Nkounkou, Gomes, Doucoure, Sigurdsson, Allan, Delph, Calvert-Lewin

Independent of price and position which Chelsea attacker would you prefer:

    A) Werner
    B) Ziyech

Right now, Werner due to pens. But depending on Ziyech's minutes in the PL, he'll be an option after the IB.

      Ziyech is nailed.

Consider that both Willian & Pedro left, he's our only option wide right.

CHO best position is the left, Mount isn't a winger & Havertz didn't really deliver when tried there.

Lamps tried 4,2,3,1 to accommodate Havertz in the #10, he's now reverted to plan A, 4,3,3.

30 attacking returns from his last 40 games in all comps.

I expect him to take more set pieces off Chilwell going forward.

He has a wand of a left foot & Lamps is really happy with him.

He’s in the category of player where it doesn’t really matter what he does. Vast majority of active teams have him, but vast majority of those won’t have captained him.

Its time the referee association sat down and took a look at penalties. In 99% of the situation the penalty is a completely disproportionate punishment for the actual transgression taking place. A random kick on the back of the foot of a player facing away from the goal at the edge of the box should not be punished with an 80% expected goal. A random ball hitting the arm when the shot was headed for row Z should be not be punished with an 80% expected goal. It doesnt make any sense.

They need to come up with something else. Bring back indirect free kicks in the box imo, for everything except the most obvious penalty worthy incidents (last man fouls, handballs when the ball is a shot on target)

    1. Pukki Blinders
      • 4 Years

That would involve a brain, something the referee association does not have

I must say, a fantastically valid post Brosstan and agree completely.

One solution is an indirect free kick awarded rather than a penalty.

Its too curve ball to ever happen but I do agree with you.

Regarding handball if its unintentional it shouldn't be penalty. Or you get a penalty but have to take it from the D with a one step "run up".

      • 12 Years

They could have penalty spots at different distances from the goal, and award the penalty to be taken closer to or further from the goal, proportional to the foul.

      1. Big_Bear
        • 9 Years

This. Or the defending teams captain get to nominate the opposition teams penalty taker (outfield only).

Or allow 1 or 2 additional defenders on the goal line to help out the GK (Could be 5 FPL points for whoever "saves" the penalty)

Real problem, but no easy solution.

The way field hockey deals with it is a penalty corner (effectively 4 defenders and keeper and then as many attackers as you like around the dee. It's a set piece with a high scoring chance that heavily favours the attacker). Then for deliberate fouls etc you have a normal penalty.

Not quite sure the same could work for football.

A simple change would be to apply the same criteria for a foul whether it occurs in or outside the box - Often we see penalties for something that the ref would just wave play on if it was outside the box
