Arsenal’s FPL defenders offering greater value than attackers this season

Man United 0-1 Arsenal

  • Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.7m)
  • Assists: Hector Bellerin (£5.0m)
  • Bonus Points: Bellerin x3, Gabriel x2 (£5.1m), Aubameyang x1

A penalty from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.7m) was enough for Arsenal to win a dour match at Manchester United that even a mythical football purist would have struggled to enjoy.

The Gabon international’s spot-kick, earned when Paul Pogba (£7.8m) fouled Hector Bellerín (£5.0m), handed the Gunners their first league win at Old Trafford in 14 years.

It also extended United’s winless run at home to four league games this season in a match that was heavy on the footballing history but light on pretty much everything else.

Gunner Be Tighter

It is a mark of this topsy-turvy season that Liverpool (15) have conceded the most goals and Arsenal (seven) the least.

Under Mikel Arteta, the Gunners are clearly much harder to beat. They are also much harder to love, especially in Fantasy terms.

Despite that impressive defensive stat, Sunday’s win was only their second clean sheet of the campaign, making it tricky for Fantasy Premier League managers to rely on a backline that’s clearly solid, just not solid enough.

But when they do shut down the opposition, the bonus point credentials of centre-half Gabriel (£5.1m) shine very brightly indeed. He earned his 11.4% ownership two extra points on Sunday.

All this defensive goodness has come during a tough opening run for the Gunners – they’ve faced Liverpool, both Manchester clubs and Leicester over the last five Gameweeks.

If they can kick on as their schedule eases, the returning Rob Holding (£4.4m) looks a potential bargain if he stays fit and in favour.

Arteta has already switched between a four and a five at the back this campaign, heightening the appeal of the team’s centre-halves.

Boring, Boring Arsenal

It is much harder to big up Arsenal’s attacking assets though.

Aubameyang is a great case in point. Boosted by his newly-acquired FPL status as a midfielder, he was owned by three million managers at the start of the season.

Six games, one goal and an assist later, his eight-point return at Old Trafford – his best score this campaign – was enjoyed by just over a million Fantasy bosses.

At least Aubameyang had something to show for his work, thanks to his penalty-taking responsibilities.

Lone striker Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m) had a miserable afternoon involving one penalty area touch and no shots, although he did lead the way – alongside Luke Shaw (£4.9m) – for chances created, with two.

With Aston Villa and Leeds up next for the Gunners, the prospect of goals looks good. But who’s going to score them?

United We Stand (Down)

As for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, the return of Anthony Martial (£8.7m) from suspension probably cannot come soon enough.

Since he was dismissed against Spurs, United have fallen apart in that Tottenham debacle, left it very late to beat Newcastle and have now emerged goalless and with one point from home games against Chelsea and Arsenal.

The United coach started with a diamond formation on Sunday, with Mason Greenwood (£7.2m) nominally playing up front alongside Marcus Rashford (£9.6m).

It was a move that Arteta referenced post-match.

“They played a really tricky formation with four midfielders and two that constantly strain your back four.” – Mikel Arteta

Whereas Solskjaer was rather less enthused by his own master plan.

“The formation is down to the opposition. It depends on the team you play against and how you execute that shape yourself. Of course, today we were too sloppy, too many passes went astray and the rotations weren’t there. Too many things can go wrong in a game of football that maybe went wrong for us.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Greenwood did at least work Bernd Leno (£5.0m) – one of three (regulation) saves for the Arsenal keeper.

But it was a mark of United’s toothlessness that Rashford had just three touches, and no shots, in the box.

In fact, the team’s major offensive weapon ended up being Harry Maguire (£5.4m), whose aerial threat led to a match-leading four attempts and five touches in the penalty area as United hoped for the best from a series of corners and crosses.

The best never came and the hope is currently drifting away.

United now have a mixed bag (eve WBA sou whu) to find some of both before Gameweek 12’s Manchester derby.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw; McTominay, Fred (Matic 62); Pogba, Fernandes (van de Beek 75), Greenwood (Cavani 75); Rashford.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Leno; Bellerin, Holding, Gabriel, Tierney; Elneny, Partey; Saka, Willian (Maitland-Niles 86), Aubameyang (Mustafi 87); Lacazette (Nketiah 76).

First time this year looking for advice. Used 2FTs to do JRod, Maupay > Puli, Bamford and now I’m stuck.

    Martinez
    Reguilón Robertson Ayling/KWP
    Salah Son Grealish Pulisic*
    DCL Kane Bamford

    Forster McGinn* Mitchell

    1FT 0.1itb

    The questions are:
    1. Should I be taking any hits?
    2. Pulisic > ?
    3. Shipping McGinn a priority?
    4. Defense ok?

    Thanks all

    Saiss & Mitchell > Bellerin & Coufal

    Exact funds. 2FT.

Only issue is I have no Chelsea defenders.

    My defenders:

    Robbo
    Saiss
    Lamptey
    Justin
    Mitchell

Can't accomodate everyone, and chelsea defence cost 5.0 and above. You would do well using the extra fund on strengthening your mid and forward

    3. Mile Plankton
      • 11 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

My defence is same except that I have Reece James instead of Robbo.
      Can't you do Saiss->Zouma

Mitchell can stay there as a bench fodder. Other four should be enough.

Also, Mendy could be good Chelsea asset.

      1. JURGENAUT
        • 3 Years

I can do a straight swap of Saiss to Zouma.

However, Mitchell will fall tomorrow and I’ll only be able to sell at 4.0 for which there’s no replacements.

Right now I can sell Saiss & Mitchell for 9.3 combined with 0.2 itb giving me 9.5 for 2 defenders.

On the balance of things, I feel Bellerin & Coufal would be reasonable.

Just don’t know if I’m walking into a disaster with no Chelsea coverage.

Goalie is McCarthy and I’m happy with him.

If Mitchell falls, he will fall from £4.2 to £4.1. So, in either case, you'll be able to sell him for £4.1.

& I cannot do the Mitchell upgrade without transferring out Saiss first which isn’t idea as I wanted to wait a little bit with him, but Bellerin escaped a price rise tonight and I’m sure tomorrow he’ll definitely rise. So will have to pull the trigger soon

Bellerin is a good pick, didn't see ealier that he was so "cheap". With the fixtures coming for Arsenal and his offensive style, it's a decent pick. I wouldn't rush a transfer early in the week to get him though.

Bought at 4.0. He’s 4.2 right now but should he fall to 4.1 which he will, can only sell for 4.0 right?

I’d keep Mitchell as fodder for now. Still a chance that he will play. Saiss to Bellerin seems a decent option, although I’d prefer Zouma, especially with no other Chelsea def.

If you need the funds then Coufal is an option, although I’m not convinced about West Ham’s CS potential.

Roll the other FT for now.

That's what I was thinking, kepp until gw9. But he is uncertain to play and Soton are scoring regularly.

        And for other 4
        James is rotation risk;
        Lamp is injury risk;
        Mitchell is behind PVA in packing order;
Justin is also second option, but he is safe for now.

I could use a nailed on defender.

I know a lot can happen between now and then but I’m thinking of WC gwk10 to load up on City Utd Leicester assets who have great fixtures and offload Spurs Wolves Brighton etc. Curious to see those with WC if they have a target date to play it— international break maybe? Is Bamford on pens?
I don't like either with tough fixtures comming up. But Wilson is probably better choice between two of them going forward.

klich takes pens for leeds. also, i feel wilson is a better pick until gw13 when leeds fixtures turn to easier ones.

I have activated my Wildcard for next GW, so this is my team right now

    GK: Martinez, Forster
DEF: Saiss, Coufal, Cancelo, Chilwell, Mitchell
MID: Jorginho, Rashford, Son, Salah, Anguissa
    FOR: Kane, Bamford, DCL
    0.7 ITB

Who should I change? Btw I cant get rid of Rashford because "league rules". Thanks!

personally despite playign west brom id look for only one of son/kane and save yourself a transfer down the line, their fixtures get bad— prob use the cash to upgrade jorginho to grealish

Saiss out for sure. Not a fan of the Jorginho pick. Soucek instead maybe? Prefer Wilson and Watkins to Bamford.

I’d go Mandy instead of Martinez. Villa showing signs of weakness at the back. That’s double Chelsea defence, obviously. I’d go Dias over Cancelo for security of starts. Get rid of Saiss to fund those moves.

Leeds were naive at the start of the match, leaving 2 on 2 and with Leicester’s quality on the counter, they punished them early on. It was all Leeds after half-time, Bielsa having tweaked the formation. Leicester were clinical as the game wore on. They’ve got quality off the bench these days. Vardy looking a serious fpl option again. He needs so few chances to rack up the points.

Nice, thanks. Seems like I was wrong to discount them before the season, they're doing very well. I thought no Europe would have had a bigger effect! Vardy is playing phenomenally too, wow.

Yeah. His goal record in the league is so impressive. Looking like he’s going to hit those numbers again. Plus, Leicester get plenty of penalties, which is another factor to consider. He hadn’t been off the pitch long when they were awarded another.

I was all set on bringing in either Rash or Fernandes, but now considering a front line of Kane, Vardy, DCL.

Kane -> Vardy seems like the move I'll make GW10, let's see. It's him or a United asset and I like what I'm seeing from Leicester, the Wolves game will be interesting - I want to see how they deal with a strong defense.

Is Creswell worth 0.6 or 0.7 more than Coufal, Masuaku and Balbuena.
Is any of them rotation risk or not nailed on?

    1. Third Eye Vision
      • 11 Years

Suggestions that Masuaku’s place would be under threat if they changed formation at the back. I think Coufal would keep his place regardless. Not sure about Balbuena. Think Coufal offers more going forward too, so get him unless the 0.1 is crucial.

        Thanks.
I was thinking exactly that, who could be dropped if they switch to 4 at the back.
Creswell is not an attcking threat if he plays as CB, so I'll probably go for Coufal. Hopefully, he'll serve well.

I need a Saiss replacement and was thinking Coufal. I’m just mulling over a Saints or Villa defender instead. Maybe Saints have the most CS potential.

            Same here
I am thinking Saiss to Coufal or Vestergaard.
Saints could do better, but I want Coufal as a differential, as my rival has Vestergaard. I hope he's done scoring.

Reluctant to drop Kane, he’s only blanked in the first game of the season. Incredible consistency so far. but Vardy definitely looking like an option instead of someone else.

    1. TAA + Jimenez -> Chilwell + Wilson/Bamford. (Leaves 4.2m/4.7m ITB).
    2. TAA + Jimenez -> Coufal/Holding + Wilson/Bamford. Leaves 5.6m ITB to change Barkley-> KDB/Ster next GW.
    3. Other moves.

    McCarthy.
    TAA, Robbo, Ayling.
    Salah, Barkley, Podence, Son.
    Kane, Jimenez, DCL.
    Button, Justin, Mitchell, Bissouma.
2ft, 0.7m ITB. WC still to play and may use soon enough.

I like all of them. I’m less sure of KDB at the moment. I guess he’ll be more of an option once Aguero or Jesus get fit.

      Chilwell over Zouma long term.

Son & DCL long term. Both well underpriced this season.
