The Fantasy Flutter: Betting odds on the weekend’s Premier League action

Sponsored by bet365

The FPL deadline may have passed at a ridiculously early time but there are still eight Premier League matches to go of Gameweek 8, ergo plenty of matches on which to have a small wager.

Every Saturday morning, we combine Fantasy football with a flutter as we take a punt on the upcoming top-flight fixtures.

Focusing on the games taking place over the next two days, we’ll be looking to the data available in our Premium Members Area to inspire a few sensibly staked bets this weekend.

The odds featured in this piece are all provided by our official sportsbook partner, bet365.

Please gamble responsibly and always remember: when the fun stops, stop.

Bet365 to be Fantasy Football Scout's official sportsbook partner in 2020/21

HAMMER TIME

West Ham United’s long-awaited fixture swing is finally here, with the Hammers now set to enjoy a favourable run of matches from Gameweeks 8-20.

It all starts with a home game against Fulham who, despite picking up their first win of the season in Gameweek 7, are still conceding at a rate of two goals per match in 2020/21.

West Ham will have to make do without Michail Antonio for the time being but there is still plenty of attacking menace in this Hammers side: they have already found a way past Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Wolves and Leicester over the last six Gameweeks, scoring at a rate of over two goals per match in that time.

Jarrod Bowen, scorer of three of those goals, is 6/1 with bet365 to open the scoring this evening – longer odds than the less-then-clinical Aleksandar Mitrovic and Sebastien Haller (both 9/2).

And there could be even better value to be had in east London.

Tomas Soucek, who has had more attempts on goal and shots in the box than any other West Ham midfielder this season, is 15/2 to net the first goal at the London Stadium this weekend.

The Czech international might be without a goal to his name in 2020/21 but he has pedigree, having scored on three occasions in seven post-restart matches this summer.

And might he even be on penalties? Regular takers Noble and Antonio are currently sidelined, while Soucek took 13 spot-kicks for Slavia Prague in the two seasons before moving to England.

Pablo Fornals, who has more FPL attacking turns to his name than any other West Ham player this season, is an even bigger 9/1 to score first against the Cottagers.

While it can be hard to second-guess who will break the deadlock in any given game, the bet365 first goalscorer market gives punters the opportunity to bet each way on their players, as one would in a horse race – the details of which are below.

Each Way First Goalscorers

Place an Each Way First Goalscorer bet on any Soccer match.

If your player scores at any time during the game in 90 minutes play, we will pay you out at 1/3 odds for unlimited places.

BLUNT BLADES

It’s now five clean sheets in a row for Chelsea in all competitions, with the Blues’ backline galvanised by the arrival of Edouard Mendy, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell.

And up next for Frank Lampard’s troops are Sheffield United, who have scored only three goals all season – two of which came from the spot.

No Premier League side has registered fewer shots on target than the Blades in 2020/21.

There’ll be plenty of Fantasy managers rooting for a Chelsea clean sheet at Stamford Bridge and a shut-out for the hosts is available at even money with bet365, which seems very reasonable given the contrasting form of the two teams.

A Chelsea win to nil is 5/4, meanwhile.

Chris Wilder’s side have allowed more headed chances than any other team this season, which makes great reading for a goal-crazed Kurt Zouma, who has found the net on three occasions in the last seven Gameweeks.

The French centre-back is 22/1 to score first in this fixture with bet365.

NIL-NIL DESPERANDUM

In the first meeting between Wolves and Leicester in 2019/20, no-one scored.

In the second meeting between Wolves and Leicester in 2019/20, no-one scored.

In Sunday’s meeting between Wolves and Leicester, will someone score?

With bet365’s Bore Draw Money Back new customer offer, there is at least the consolation of getting your stake refunded if the match does end up being a goalless stinker.

No side has kept as many clean sheets as Wolves this season, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s pre-match words confirming that his side have gone back to basics after their pummeling by West Ham:

The West Ham game really showed us. It was our main focus after that and you can see an improvement on our organisation; more compact, more solid, not allowing too many chances, and things that are part of us.

But the West Ham game was a big moment for us in terms of what we quickly need to improve. You cannot be in the game if you are not strong enough in defence and you cannot think about competing well. The starting point was obvious.

A 0-0 at the King Power is 7/1 with bet365 but for those wishing to punt on goals, knowing that there is the fall-back of a refund in the event of a scoreless draw, a bet on Jamie Vardy to score first in a 1-0 Leicester win is 14/1.

Bore Draw Money Back

Refund for any Soccer game that finishes 0-0 at bet365.

I'd get rid of Taylor too, I plan to. Burnley were very look to get a CS last night, Brighton pummelled them and a more clinical team would have scored a couple.

It is rather less frustrating to see my bench with two red flagged players. Seeing yellow and red scattering makes me feel wanting to sort out. Anyone else feels the same? I have Ferguson and Mitchell. No other flag in the team.

I always feel like that but important to realise that it’s mostly just your ocd brain wanting to see no flags

2/3 of my defence was flagged yesterdsy, chances are they both play and lamptey already got 6 points so wait and see over the IB break if any news

          That's quite the loaded question.

There's a lot to be said for the psychology involved in this game. The way we as individuals manage our teams says something about us. We're all different. We all have the potential to process the same information differently and therefore respond differently.

It's actually a very interesting concept and goes into how we view the short term vs the long term and how that manifests itself in actions/decision making.

It's similar to how Fantasy managers will view similarly performing assets and tend to value the more expensive one as it's almost 'implied' that the cheaper player is being lucky, and isn't actually as good as they appear. We like the shiny objects even if their only superior quality is how much they shine.

There's a lot behind taking hits, feeling the urge to change something even though it's fine and a feeling of unrest at not interfering. It might be beneficial to do a bit of reading into it.

            Good analysis

Fantasy is reflecting my personality as I have no patience in my life.
Believe it or not fantasy is a tool I use to be more calculative in my real life tool.

To a certain extent, this has worked out but still a long way to go.

It's not random the fact that I had a tough week at work and I took a hit to remove Martinez for Mendy

It was probably the stupidest decision I've ever done as the reasoning behind it is not logical

        2. Brosstan
          • 9 Years
          3 years, 4 months ago

Hits normally don't pay off unless the player you are removing isn't going to play. I think there's also a case for hitting in a premium with an absolute plum fixture if you are going to captain them, but that can normally be avoided with better planning.

Took two hits this week with 2 FTs to do a mini wildcard with Pulisic and Saiss needing to go. One of my new recruits was Wilson, so it’s going well so far.

I’d only taken one hit before that. I find I can be patient for a while and then I reward my patience with indulgent rashness. Which upon reflection probably does quite reflect my personality.

This would make a good item for the scoutcast.

Rubbish Saturday. I’m actually glad it’s gone so poorly as hopefully it’s a lesson learnt. But probably not. Had I just done Pulisic to Ziyech I’d have banked an FT and would also have played Taylor. Better get some decent returns today or I’ll be annoyed for two weeks!!

Nothing wrong with hits, they would not exist if they were always a bad strategy. Its more about how you enjoy the game. This year my hits have not worked so far, although this week I took a few and I m confident they ll work. If you had next week a game like MCI - FUL and you did not take a hit to bring at least one MCI player even if the game ended 1-0 you d have played wrong imo. You need to chase the points to come. I disagree with taking hits when Bamford scored a hattrick to bring him in since he wont repeat it soon but the players with potential to give more than one returns before an easier game are totally worth it. Patience rewards sometimes, but hits are fun!

And this is where patience comes into it. You rarely take the hit/s for one week’s returns so if it doesn’t pay off immediately just sit tight and have faith in your moves. Which is why this looming international break couldn’t come at a worse time for me.

Obviously you cant change a player just because he blanked, else we would take 5-6 hits every week. Int Break is not that different from previous weeks, most of the owned players had midweek games so you could end up with one - two questionable players even with a four day gap.

People do though. The ragers. We’ve all been guilty of it. Well, most of us. Another personality reflection there.

And I was referring more to being patient with a 2 week wait rather than the risk of injury. Although of course that also comes into it.

What do we think of Richarlison from this week? His stats before his red card were very good (0.63 xG and 025 xA) and he now has 3 very good fixtures (ful, LEE, bur). He’s on penalties as well.

Coufal two assists, clean sheet... no worries.

TBH, I chose him too, but that was weeks ago. Remember to look at your trades over a few weeks. It's hard, only the present matters... Vestergaard does look ok. Lamptey looks awesome on-screen. WHU are good, but possibly behind SOU now.

Who are the other two defenders you’re starting? I agree that Coufal’s fixture was the best, but why own Lamptey if you’re not starting him at home v Burnley? Ditto re Vestergard and Newcastle. Almost a case for an early BB there!

What fires? Seems decent enough. Maybe shift Bruno and Saiss? TAA is a difficult one-he will come good I’m sure, and I assume you’ve had him from GW1 so maybe keep rolling those dice?

Fingers crossed for a 4pts well spent.

Robbo > Coufal and Trossard > Ziyech.

            Has left me with...

            McCarthy
            Chilwell/Reguilon/Coufal
            Salah(c)/Sterling/Bruno/Ziyech/Grealish
            DCL/Bamford

B all day long!!! He plays as a wingback/fullback for a top team which has conceded the least number of goals and is not subject to rotation risk. Maitland-niles and Cedric play in the European matches.

If you’ve still got Robbo then you won’t shift him until WC

I think one of Kane and Son and one of James and DCL remains ok. Fixture swings won’t stop spurs and Everton scoring goals, may just limit it. Personally I did James to Zaha last week and am leaning towards Son to Sterling next week

I agree that if i was going to keep a Spurs player this has to be Kane but at the end i think i will keep Son too cause they carry all their attack and he loves counter attacks vs stronger oppositions. I might just end up ditching Robbo and upgrading Jrod to KDB/Mane

Robbo is a 7.0m winger playing for a side that scores a lot of goals. Ditching him is a bad idea imo.

I've done so many possible rejigs for getting in City, and I think of those players listed above the only one I'm going to lose is Kane. What makes it easier is that I think there are only 2, maybe 3 solid picks among the City players: a defender, probably Cancelo (others might argue Diaz), & KDB. Sterling is a possible but i think you're going to want KDB before him and he's poor value in terms of the damage it does to your team if you try to squeeze them both in. The forwards are too injury prone and prone to rotation (which I expect to be worse this time because they'll want to protect them and not end up with the situation they've had for the last couple of weeks).

If I had a gun to my head to lose one more it would probably be Jrod (he's an easy switch to Zaha, Ziyech, Maddison maybe or even Foden if you want to punt on another City).

I'm looking at something like this for GW 10 (with a hit)

              Martinez
              Robertson Chillwell Cancelo
              Salah KDB Son Grealish Jrod
              DCL Bamford

              4.0 Lamptey Coufal Brewster

There is no need of keeping Robbo if you have 4 others great defs like you do (and i do too). I would prefer to spend the Robbo money for a stronger attack

Robbo's fixtures 10 to 18 are outstanding, even better than City's. The problem is, where do you put the money? Even with all that cash you can't stretch to anyone with good forma and fixtures (Fernandes? - no thanks). Don't want to lose DCL for a rotation-risk Jesus. The obvious is Son to Sterling but i want to keep one of the Spurs boys and think Son + Robbo outscores Sterling + a good 4.5 rotation over those fixtures. The decent 4.5s are cover for Cancello's inevitable rotation and injuries (I don't really count Brewster).

It depends how risk-averse you are. I like nailed players.

You really think they are going to score 175 points each (on average).. Haha!!

Such is the nature of this season my friend. 175 maybe too optimistic yes 😉

Both of them won't get more than 150 for sure and for that also they will need to have a good season.

They have been having a really fine season so far. Nailing down a place will be most important.
At least for jota, the set up allows him to be potentially in the mix for points when pool dominate

Keep Burnley’s Taylor or shift for Coufal / KWP?

Is Adams now more essential than Bamford at that third forward price point ? 🙂

Stop chasing points mate. If you have Bamford, keep him.

Mitrovic is the best in that bracket 😉

I brought him over the last international break and took him out for Kane the following Gameweek. It was the best decision ever!!

Should probably have kept him and got Kane

He has 8 goals/assists in 8 games. One of the highest points scoring players atm. He cost 6.6 and plays for Newcastle. He will blank often, and you'll never know when.

Nah he’s a 6.6m striker who is never going to score every week

If Jota gets regular starts I am doubling up on Pool for sure with this team starting GW10:

              Martinez
              Lamptey Coufal Dallas
              Salah Sterling Son Jota
              Vardy DCL Martial

That defense though, and i guess bench is nothing much to talk about?
                Great attacks but. Nice structure

Going cheap on defense. Someone like Lamptey has more points than TAA. Can quickly shuffle around if expensive defenders start to pick up. Bench has starters too:

                  Steere Taylor Lewis Bissouma

Not taking a punt, but I do have Souček and think he's bound to score tonight... been knocking on that door for weeks now.
