Watkins making strong case for Villa double-up with in-form Grealish

Arsenal 0-3 Aston Villa

  • Goals: Ollie Watkins x2 (£6.0m)
  • Own goals: Bukayo Saka (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Matt Targett (£4.5m), Ross Barkley (£6.0m), Jack Grealish (£7.4m)
  • Bonus points: Watkins x3, Targett x2, Barkley x1

THE GREAL DEAL

Jack Grealish (£7.5m) has firmly established himself in the current template for success among Fantasy Premier League managers after yet another attacking return against Arsenal.

Following a Gameweek 8 assist, the Aston Villa midfielder has involved himself in 10 of his team’s 18 goals this season (55.6%) and averaged 8.6 points per game in 2020/21.

The England international does not look like letting up either, running the show in Villa’s impressive 3-0 win at Arsenal, who came into Sunday evening’s clash with the Premier League’s best defensive record.

As is usually the case with this all-action midfield asset, Grealish could easily have left the Emirates Stadium with a third double-figure haul of the season as he assisted a John McGinn (£5.5m) goal ruled out for offside against Ross Barkley (£6.0m) in the first period before seeing his second-half penalty box effort cleared off the line by Kieran Tierney (£5.4m).

Unsurprisingly, Fantasy managers are taking note of Grealish’s excellent displays, and ability to convert them into points, increasing the pressure on non-owners.

He came into Gameweek 8 in 57.9% of squads inside the top 10,000 worldwide rankings, only Son Heung-min (87.1%), Harry Kane (86.7%) and Mohamed Salah (65.3%) owned by more at that level.

With Brighton (home), West Ham (away), Newcastle (home), Wolves (away), Burnley (home), West Bromwich Albion (away) and Crystal Palace (home) the next seven teams to face Aston Villa, it is certainly not too late to exploit Grealish’s favourable form and fixtures, his price already rising to £7.5m as of Tuesday morning.

1.21 GIGA-WATS

The kind nature of Aston Villa’s fixtures, as well as their ability to score goals, certainly justifies anyone looking at a double-up on their attacking assets.

Even better, there is a seriously viable candidate to join Grealish in our squads right now, Ollie Watkins (£6.1m) registering a 13-point haul at Arsenal thanks to a brace and maximum bonus.

Those goals took the former Exeter City and Brentford forward to seven attacking returns for the season, all of them coming in Villa’s last five matches, an average of 8.6 points per game.

Crucially, the timing of Watkins’ form and fixtures could be perfect for anyone in need of replacing Callum Wilson (£6.6m), should his hamstring injury prove to be a long-term one. We are likely to find out more about it on the other side of the international break.

And while Bamford may be one to consider as another alternative Wilson replacement, Watkins might even find himself as the go-to option for anyone concerned about Leeds’ fixtures, as they face Arsenal (home), Everton (away), Chelsea (away) and West Ham (home) in the next four. Over the last four Gameweeks, Bamford has scored 28 points to Watkins’ 24, so the two players are largely tracking at the same level of output but the latter has better fixtures by far.

BARK AND BITE

Watkins is not the only kindly-priced option to pair with Grealish though, as Barkley added his third attacking return of the last five Gameweeks against Arsenal.

During that time, he has averaged 5.8 points per game and, ahead of Gameweek 9, he was pushed into a more advanced role against Arsenal.

Dean Smith has mostly favoured 4-3-3 since the turn of the year as he sought to shore up last season’s defensive problems.

However, in recent weeks the Villa manager has begun lining his troops up in more of a 4-2-3-1, asking McGinn and Douglas Luiz (£4.9m) to sit slightly deeper and affording Barkley a number 10 role.

SAFE HANDS?

A first clean sheet since Gameweek 5 was welcome news for the 26.8% invested in Emiliano Martínez (£4.8m) although Villa’s clean sheet potential for their kind run of fixtures is still arguably up in the air.

Smith’s men were fortunate not to concede at Arsenal, Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m) spurning a golden chance at the back post, which he headed over in the first half.

Then, in the second half, Rob Holding (£4.4m) was afforded too much time to get on the end of Gabriel‘s (£5.1m) cross. Had offensive players been given the chance to attack that space, they might well have scored.

Remember, of course, Villa’s upcoming opponents Brighton have blanked in just one match this season and West Ham have found the net against Liverpool, Manchester City and Spurs.

Arsenal XI (3-4-2-1): Leno; Tierney, Gabriel, Holding; Saka, Elneny, Partey (Ceballos 46′), Bellerín; Aubameyang, Willian (Pépé 65′); Lacazette (Nketiah 65′).

Aston Villa XI (4-2-3-1): Martínez; Targett, Mings, Konsa, Cash; McGinn, D Luiz; Grealish, Barkley, Trézéguet (El Ghazi 88′); Watkins.

Not that scared of Bamford yet - I'm still not convinced, everyone saying he's improved from the champs, but in reality despite having many many Big chances he is still missing them at a similar rate to how many he missed in the champs? He will score, and be a very option at 6m, but he wont score hatricks every week. More than enough cover in the rest of the team to cover any points scored by him. The ones you really want to be scared of are Bruno / Any of the city attack when they explode

Hi Guys, £1.0m ITB and 2 FT...

    Martinez; Forster
    Robbo; Chilwell; Coufal; Lamptey; Mitchell
    Salah; Son; Grealish; Rodriguez; Soucek
    Kane; DCL; Watkins

Rank currently 774K. Big green arrows in last two weeks after a very slow start.

Any suggestions on what to do over the IB? Thinking to use one FT and save the other so that I have 2 FT for GW10, when I'll probably be looking to bring in City players.

Not keen to drop Son or Kane now. Kane is long-term keeper this season I think.

Maybe just upgrade Mitchell or is that a waste?

    Cheers!

I have pretty much the same team as you except Kilman instead of Mitchell.

I've already transferred out Kane for Vardy (might even captain Vardy Vs Liverpool). Next week I'm planning Robbo/Son to Cancelo/KDB.

I could live to regret dumping out my spurs assets but I've decided to go for it and stick with it.

Interesting - thanks for that! Have considered downgrading Robbo to free up funds to move Son on. But not sure I want to do that this week - a week early for City players I think, esp given their attacking form is not at all convincing (yet).

Other move I was considering was JRod to Ziyech. Even with Richarlison back and some decent fixtures I don't really fancy Everton at the moment. Ziyech looks like he can offer more of a threat and at the very least pick up some assists.

Yeah, I've pondered this too. Ziyech does looks great! Again though, kinda feels like the wrong week to lose Rodriguez with Everton vs Fulham and then two good fixtures after.

I feel like the next 3-4 fixtures for CHE and EVE are very similar. Ziyech is tempting me because Chelsea have looked much better than Everton recently.

I'll need to think on this one.

Watkins looks really good in a v. attacking Villa team. Patience require though as he won't return every week. But clearly capable of big scores.

I had him on my bench for the hatrick against Pool. Since then he's blanked twice (I think) and returned in the other two. Last weekend's brace was a big rank booster for me.

I'm keeping him, Kane and DCL for the forseeable barring injuries.

Any Brighton fans care to wager on Welbeck? Had two great chances at the weekend and had 13 penalty box touches as well.

Could be a good bench player at 5.5

Isn't amazing that Ziyech created 4 big chances in his first 2 games that he started?
I worry about his only 1 shot a little bit but given his older season's he had 3.5 shots per game before some time ago so I think he won't keep it less than 1 spg

In this 1 game barkley outperformed Grealish yes. But if you want to look at stats, look at grealish stats for the season and he is head and shoulders above barkley. He's in the same realm as the top Mids in the game. There is also the factor of being the talisman for a team, which doesnt translate into numbers. But if they need to win the game, who is the go to guy? Grealish. He will get many more points than barkley

You know fortunes are made by folk who gamble on unlikely double ups sometimes.

Your question should be Barkley or Grealish or both.

You’ll find plenty who will double up on Grealish and Watkins (brought both in last week) but that’s only because it has a better looking rhythm than looking at two mids from the same team for many, especially fixtures based picks....the reality is it might not be much different...but cheaper.

Anyone else going to go with Castagne over other premiums if he's fully fit for after the int break? Fulham, Sheff, and Brighton after Pool

I had him earlier in the season and was happy before he's injured. Took him out for Cancelo GW7 and is happy as well.

I just think this is similar to Saiss earlier ... jumped in got the points and then move away when it's proven not nailed. But he may be nailed fully, so ...

Great player and pick, if you have another city Def as he isn't going to be nailed in my opinion. Pep already hinted in his praise, he can work on his defending. He will prefer mendy with a natural left foot in some games

Mitchell just dropped in price so depends on your price points n team I guess. If you had asked yesterday I’d have said Mitchell to save .1... today, I’d say Saiss
To Coufal/Cressweel depending on your team

Oooh. That’s tough. I see you’re a member. What I normally do is check fixtures and they are similar, so I’d then compare them both over 4 weeks..I’ve done that and for me it would be Targett. Check out their stats n decide. You may be surprised what you see under shot/chances/pen area touches etc compared. I was!

Saiss - leave mitchell, he will have only cost you 4m in the first place - do you need a 5th defender

  23. Tonyawesome69
    • 5 Years
    3 years, 4 months ago

    Which one would you pick?
    1. Cancelo - Stats and fixtures look great but some doubt about how nailed he is with Mendy due back and Pep roulette
    2. Coufal - Looks steady at 4.5 with potential assists and bps. Use the saving funds on attack.

    1.5itb 2ft
    Martinez Peacock
    Chilwell Taylor Justin Ayling TAA
    Grealish Salah Son Rodriguez Bissouma
    DCL Kane Vassilev

You think Cancelo is the more aggressive pick with higher potential of points compared to Coufal? I can switch Justin to Coufal later once all LEI main defs are back,

Indeed. Love how he's not panicing despite being quite low ranked (3.5m). Thats what gets you through to the end of a season - sticking with your guns, not making rash decisions and letting your decisions play out over several Gws not just 1 week punts.

He is really good manager always read his comments here but the phrase "arguably the best Fpl manager tin the world" is wrong imo.No one is the best fpl manager.

Haha no I guess not - could also argue that no FPL manager can be the best in the world unless theyve won the whole thing! Which Tbh not all winners have the best consistent histories

Not really no, look at the hall of fame. There are almost certainly more consistent managers.

He is absolutely very very good, but purely off his finishes alone you can say he isn't the best.

Most difficult captain decision of the season for me but I feel I'll go Mane (C) for this one. World class player at home with incredible underlying stats and passing the eye test with flying colors. His backheel pass against City... my God!

I know Im going against the norm and FFS status quo, but there is no way Im ditching my Spurs assets. Everyone is talking about the fixtures, but I think Son & Kane will thrive playing vs better opposition exploring the counter. We shall see who´s right.=>

For me I don't want expensive players who I won't captain.
Spurs have been limping across the line in the past few games, Kane is the one i would consider keeping over son as he seems to be their main creator and obvs takes penalties

Define the “norm”? This place shifts to herd mentality at times which isnt normal! Im keeping Son as his talent and propensity to score big against any opponent is still there. Always a big upside with him.

Top 10k 10% Plus Ownership Players with Difficult Fixtures

    McCarthy
    KWP
    JWP
    Kilman
    Jimenez
    Coady
    Son
    Kane

    In 3 GWs
    JRod
    DCL

If these players start underperforming then in theory the top 10k scores start dropping.
If you can bring in form players in these positions it should help you gain ground.

It will take the top 10k weeks to remove these underperforming players. The casuals won't want to remove them at first so they will likely drop rank first.

Many will not be able to create a new team for this next 8 week cycle and will drop rank.
This new change presents a good opportunity to go up the ranks from now until Jan.

The seasoned managers will be making a push into the top 100k and beyond from GW9 with planning for the fixture swings.

Just my thoughts hope they don't offend anyone.

You're absolutely right, Kane and Son are the two main men here. Cost a lot and with very difficult fixtures. I'm gambling on removing them, the reward is well worth the risk to me. If they continue hauling though, that could well be season over.

    Mendy, Button
    Chilly, Reguilon, Coufal, Justin, 3.9
    Salah, Son, Ziyech, James, Grealish
    Kane, DCL, Brewster

What do you think about my team? Thinking of going Reguilon and Son to Cresswell and Bruno for a hit. I would captain Bruno right away. Decent moves?
