Sky Sports Fantasy Football: Five picks to consider after the international break

With another international break halting the Premier League action, we take a look at some of the form players in Sky Sports Fantasy Football in recent weeks.

These are not the highest-scoring players in the game nor necessarily the most popular picks, but they are nevertheless assets to consider for those looking to steal a march in their mini-leagues or climb the overall leaderboard.

A reminder that you have until 12:30pm on Saturday 21 November to make any changes to your Sky side, so waiting until the players are back from international duty and after the pre-Gameweek 11 press conferences have been and gone is perhaps the best policy given the volume of injuries and illnesses we are witnessing at present.

Hakim Ziyech – £9.4m

The omens were positive with Hakim Ziyech from the outset, with the former Ajax man registering four shots on target and scoring in Chelsea’s 4-0 win at Krasnodar in October.

Ziyech has since recorded 11-point hauls in back-to-back matches against Burnley and Sheffield United, so it could be said that the international break has come at the wrong time for his Fantasy owners.

In that two-game spell, the Moroccan international has made three goals, scored one and earned a Man of the Match award, which came against Sheffield United thanks to his two assists.

With Newcastle United up next, Ziyech could be about to make it three double-figure scores in succession.

Patrick Bamford – £8.2m

Patrick Bamford continues to defy the odds and more importantly the critics, netting seven goals from his opening eight Premier League matches. It puts him on 70 points in Sky and places him fifth in the overall points chart, which is a testament to his solid start to the current campaign.

The Englishman also tops the value-for-money table, registering 8.54 points per million spent.

The Leeds frontman has recorded 26 shots this campaign, which has helped him to shooting bonus in four of his appearances. The Whites do create an abundance of opportunities and the majority of what they do will come through Bamford or involve him in the end product, meaning he is worthy of consideration for the coming weeks.

Ben Chilwell – £9m

We spoke about Ben Chilwell a couple of weeks ago, explaining how he had gone under the radar with his 35 points from only three games. Fast forward another two matches and the full-back has only gone from strength to strength.

The England international has accrued 59 points from his five appearances this term, averaging just under 12 points per match. That puts him second in the defenders’ charts, despite playing a significant number of games less.

His ownership was at 11.96% a matter of weeks ago and now stands at 16.4%, with Chilwell currently owned by 36% of the top 1,000 Sky managers.

With two goals, two assists, three clean sheets and a Man of the Match award in his first five games, £9m is looking like a snip.

Youri Tielemans – £8.3m

Youri Tielemans has helped his Leicester City comrades to the top of the Premier League table with another great start to the season. His three goals, two of which have come from the spot in Jamie Vardy’s absence, have contributed to his 47 points, placing him sixth in the midfielder charts.

A more sustainable source of the Belgian’s points comes from the tiered bonus. In his eight matches, he has recorded bonus points on seven occasions, with four from passing, two from shots and one from tackles.

At £8.3m and with some favourable fixtures in Gameweeks 12-14 (maybe even Gameweek 11 if we consider Liverpool’s injury-hit defence), he could be a canny pick.

Alex McCarthy – £6.6m

As a rule of thumb and barring any injuries, we’d suggest keeping the goalkeeper transfers down to an absolute minimum over the course of a campaign and taking a longer-term view of the man between the posts.

Selecting a shot-stopper who can steadily bring in the points over an extended period of time is key and Alex McCarthy could fit the bill.

The Southampton custodian has had a solid start to 2020/21, producing 41 points from his eight appearances. That may not sound ground-breaking but it allows you to concentrate on your attacking players without worrying about your number one.

McCarthy has kept four clean sheets in those eight games, which is an impressive record. When you take into account his lowly ownership figure of just 1.52%, he could be a sensible differential option for the weeks and months ahead.

Irish team has been a disaster with Covid procedures from the start. Then again I've heard enough from people about the wait times for results here so I shouldn't be surprised.

True but stuff like Adam Connolly not getting to play in a Euro 2020 playoff game because he moved from the seat he was supposed to sit in and then sat too close to someone that then got a positive Covid test (which eventually turned out to be a false positive) shouldn't have happened. (Although when I mentioned the wait times I meant in general in Ireland in some areas rather than just the team.)

Agree about the Connolly situation .
Was a bit of a farce. But I doubt the slow return of some results in certain parts of Ireland has any impact on the Ireland team. A bigger worry is the fact we can't score goals and don't look late scoring. When you see some of the teams who have made it to the euros, we are really heading down the pan.

Very true. I think there's talent there but the team is far away from the days of the likes of the 2 Keanes, Duff, Holland, etc. I think people still hang onto an idea that the team has great capabilities but I just don't think it's there at the moment and the sooner people accept that, we can move on and hopefully upwards by trying to improve the football we play.

Yeah agree totally. The amount of ejits on social media today calling for Kenny to be sacked is unreal. Some people haven't a clue. Same ones probably thought Delaney was God. We have what we have and Kenny deserves a chance.

Watkins vs Bamford really does feel a tough call on a wildcard, even with Grealish locked into my team. Solution could be to go for both alongside DCL.

    Watkins:
+ Great fixtures for the foreseeable future
    + Seemingly on penalties
    + 90 minute man
    + Posting great stats
    - Points and stats have come in 2 unusual games against Liv and Ars.
    - Can Villa keep this momentum?

    Bamford:
    + Seems favoured by Bielsa
    + Plays for a gung-ho attacking team
+ Focal point of Leeds' attack
    + Also posting great stats
    - Leeds' fixtures over the next 3 are difficult. Can we really see them scoring more than 1 or 2 against ARS, eve and che?
    - Not on penalties

My plan is to go all three. Other option is going Watkins then doing DCL to Bamford when fixtures turn in 3 GWs time.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking too. Antonio is in my thoughts but we don't know how he'll be immediately after injury (feels like a riskier pick when Watkins/Villa and Bamford/Leeds are in goalscoring form).

Also, I'm not completely sold on West Ham's 'good' fixtures:
        - shu (Wilder will want a reaction after Chelsea)
        - AVL (tightened up in defence)
        - MUN (can't see WHU scoring many here)

Both could be good, it’s something I’m considering next week in order to get the big 3 of salah Bruno Kdb in midfield comes with its downsides of course as a big vardy party or Kane haul could hurt but may well be a risk worth taking

Yeah I'm set on that midfield. Vardy and Kane always capable of a haul but DCL, Bamford and Watkins all have potential to score well too.

Playing it safe - I have bruno in this week and will cap, because wont it bug you if bruno hauls and you miss a massive opportunity? Likewise if salah hauls u also own so u will hedge that. I also don't buy that bruno has a "bad" home record, he didn't last year, he had 2goals and 5assists in 7 games. Interesting more assists at home than goal threat but thats still points and still a goal or assist avg per game. Though I'll keep an eye on his involvement for Portugal but likely he's not involved that much for the national team and may actually have some semblance of a rest and be raring to go

No, every time Bruno hauls I just remember that nobody in my ML owns him. I prefer the boost of getting those points and e.g a (C) blank from Salah than the other way round.

I'm captaining Vardy, as silly as it may sound. I was tempted to do it against Leeds as I thought that game would suit him perfectly and opted against it and I've been tempted to do it against Liverpool for the same reason so I'm just going for it this time. Man Utd have been very poor at home (and unpredictable in general) and West Brom have improved defensively of late. Even after last week I'm still contemplating getting rid of Bruno soon because you don't know what Utd will turn up week to week.

Don't get rid of Bruno, that's madness. They don't need to turn up when a player has a 66% goal involvement for a team who have scored 12 in 8. That's 1.1 goal involvements per game

          • 3 Years

I know, I guess it's just that I feel like they could have a bad run at any minute as their fixtures don't inspire me and he had a few games where he wasn't involved anything like he normally is (although I don't think it was all his fault, system wasn't working and there were a lot of other players not performing), and for 10.5 I feel like I could use that better. He does like playing away though and they have a double header of away games after WBA so I'll certainly stick for now.

Food for thought for anyone going with a Man Utd player as their captain. In their last five visits to Old Trafford, WBA have won three times and United have scored a grand total of three goals across the five games. I have Rashford too but won't be trusting him with the captaincy.

The IB and risk of plenty of players getting covid might really mess up some teams, really need to hold on to my FTs until the pressers. Even if on a WC one might be forced to leave out players you really want for the long run. Not sure if it's such a good thing to be on your WC right now.

I'm recently thinking a lot about the variance in the xG statistics. By the variance I mean the fact that, if a team has only 1 shot with 0.5 xG they can only score 1 goal, however if a team has 5 shots with 0.1 xG each, they have 0.5 xG but also a chance to score more than 1 goal, even a tiny chance to score 5. And I was wondering whether we shouldn't also account for it in the various stats, especially for the game statistics (like team A should've won because they had 1.8 xG and team B only 0.6 xG). Having the mean and the deviation we should be able to calculate the probabilities from the distribution (which one though?). Same with individuall players' statistics, maybe adding a 95% range or something would be better? That would also draw us to a conclusion that it's better to have many shots from range that few or one high quality chance which I'm not sure is true. I think I have to make some analysis about it. Thoughts? Is there maybe a study covering that already?

I would expect some have done such a thing but would be interested in hearing the verdict. Wondering what's behind the RMT and other score prediction tools around. What I know as a user it's not that helpful when 'variance' is high. Also, how does it look this 'COVID' impacted era compared to the previous seasons data?

    Which combo?

    A) Vardy + Ziyech + Coufal/Lindelof (3-4-3)
    B) Bruno + Ziyech + Lewis (3-5-2)
    C) Antonio/Bamford + Sterling + Cancelo (3-4-3)

KDB in the team. Rest of defence: Robertson, Chilwell and Lamptey.

C the strongest across the board, but I like B (given that Lewis is going to be on your bench more often that not, right)?

I found an interesting tool. Che Adams overall this season is starting to perform as expected (because he overperformed in the last 3 or 4 games). https://danny.page/expected_season_goals.html In half of the simulations he would have scored more goals though.

I've got Reece James from last wild card and looking to downgrade Robertson and have issues with Saiss and Mitchell to solve. Who's best option to replace Robertson with?

    A) Chilwell
    B) Cancelo
    C) Cresswell

    Best move this week?

    McCarthy
    TAA Chilwell Coufal Taylor Mitchell
    Salah Son Foden Soucek
    Kane Werner DCL

    A. TAA > any def
    B. Foden > Jota
    C. Both -4
    D. WC (will prob do it in next few weeks anyway)

Why has coady got to isolate for 2 weeks after being in close contact with someone who tested positive via track and trace but has returned 2 negative results since, yet the entire england team who were in contact with browne are ok to carry on training ready for weekend game?
These international matches are just silly right now....rumours of some brazilian players testing positive aswell...
