Salah tests positive for coronavirus – Egyptian FA

Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) has tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Egypt.

The Egyptian Football Association announced on Friday that the Liverpool midfielder returned a positive test ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Togo but is asymptomatic.

The (translated) statement read:

The medical swab conducted on the mission of our first national football team showed that our international player, Mohamed Salah, the star of Liverpool, was infected with the coronavirus after his test came out positive – although he does not suffer from any symptoms.

[He] was subject to the medical protocol after the coordination of the national team doctor, Dr Muhammad Abu Al-Ola, with his English club, Liverpool, in addition to isolating him in his room and also isolating all contacts.

In a later announcement, Egypt confirmed that a second test backed up the findings of the first:

At the time of writing, Liverpool have yet to confirm the news.

Barring any further developments, Salah will now have to undergo a period of self-isolation and will very likely be unavailable for the Gameweek 9 visit of Leicester City.

The Reds are already injury-ravaged heading into that fixture, with Joe Gomez (£5.4m) joining Virgil van Dijk (£6.3m) on the sidelines and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) also a major doubt with a calf problem.

Sadio Mane (£12.0m) of course tested positive for coronavirus last month, returning to training at Melwood after a 10-day period of self-isolation and featuring for the Reds in the Merseyside derby, 15 days after his initial diagnosis.

Salah could feasibly return in Gameweek 10, then, if a similar timeframe of recovery, isolation and return to training pans out – although there is also the small matter of a flight back to England in between.

We have already seen West Bromwich Albion’s Callum Robinson (£5.5m) withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad after returning a positive test of his own.

Wolves’ Conor Coady (£5.0m) is also self-isolating after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Earlier on Friday, Ireland revealed that Alan Browne had returned a positive coronavirus test after playing against England – although the Football Association of Ireland added that “no close contacts of the player” had been identified.

Don't worry. I've seen this person's posts over the last few weeks.

You'll only know if he's missing 2 GWs after the Leicester match.

Sure, Brighton. Probably back for Wolves who may not let up much... but oh wait he has Fulham after that and will definitely be back.

My point is, you can't tell before Leicester if he will miss two matches.

By the time Brighton comes around, it'll be back down to potentially missing 1 match.

          You have no certainty.

If you want to sell him this week it's a leap of faith because you want get confirmation he misses 2 GWs ahead of the deadline most probably.

That's incredible. I'm trying to assist you in thinking about a question critically.

You want a middy-coddled answer which doesn't marry up with the real-word example you are being presented with.

Forget that it's a hypothetical question. If you know before GW9 that he'll definitely miss GW9 and GW10 will you sell Salah?

                  Possibly.

However the fallacy in the question being asked is that there is no way of 'knowing this' right now - so your the decision making process is flawed form the outset.

Rather that giving an answer which completely side-steps the reality, I'm arguing the case to think logically.

Spent a night in Albuquerque en route to Santa Fe a few years back; remember it being uncomfortably humid.

It's finally cooled off the past week or two here in SoCal. Thanksgiving looking decidedly stunted and quiet this year, which would be a good thing. You stay safe too, pal.

Those who have a player who can score more than 2 pts on the bench there is no point of selling Mo unless you have no captain choice for this week

There is the loss of value, and the fact that he could be out more games, losing more value...or you can swap him for someone like Bruno, he drops .2, and you buy him back

If Salah is only missing one PL match I may keep.

People will gain advantage by having more money in play. We can get Rash/Bruno and than Son to Salah if needed

The Egyptian authorities said he's self isolating in his room. So even if he somehow makes it back in time for gw10 he will likely be unfit to start the game.

I train 5 or 6 times per week, if I miss 2 weeks of training my fitness and strength levels all noticeably drop.

Used my FT this week to do Sterling -> Bruno (C). Mostly because I lack a proper captain this GW.
Obviously have some good fixtures coming up, but already have KDB, and I think the value in Ziyech, Grealish, Son, Bruno, Zaha and such is better.

If you are on a wildcard, and have had Salah thoughout the season, would you include him in you team?

Until Friday week and you know more about him and other players before GW9. Could lose value moving him out and buying him back if he tests negative and clear to play v Leicester.

    Out: Salah Son Saiss
    In: KDB Bruno Cancelo

It’s only one game, surely we should all keep Salah? Especially as he’s now 12.4

            Depends on your bench.

Depends on more than that. It depends on the value of 1 or 2 transfers, it depends what else happens to your team in the meantime, on price changes etc

Right now I find it tough to see how benching s premium for one week is worse than using most likely two transfers on that player alone, potentially veering into hits if more goes wrong and losing value. Average ppg is 8ish. It just... isn't worth it?

I’ve been questioning whether he is such a must-have anyways....look at all the players who have scored within 10 points of him, and how much cheaper many of them are

It's a good point. And it's the age old question of balancing value with total score. If you sell for one of those players who is £2-4m cheaper (i.e. Grealish, Bamford, Son, Vardy - many of whom people have already), you have to guarantee you make up those 10 less points elsewhere with the spare cash. Easily do-able, but you have to get the right player. I guess it comes down to the fact that Salah feels like the safest source of points

Yeah, he and DCL seem like the most likely to get a goal almost every game...but at 12.4 is that enough? I have him, but am not bothered by losing him for a few weeks

That’s my thinking as well. Although part of me is thinking his price might crash down, so the value I’ve got tied up in him won’t matter anyway.

Hopefully it will just be one match he misses- it should be if he was following the UK guidance (isolate for 10 days unless he develops symptoms), but I’ve got no idea what the Egyptian Covid isolation rules are!

Two strikers, same xG, same number of goals. Would you rather the one who has a greater number of chances, but they're smaller chances, and takes more shots - or a striker who gets a smaller number of chances, but they're bigger chances, and scores the same number of goals from fewer shots?

The chances missed could impact an FPL forwards BPS. But if it was my team he might miss those chances but a teammate could capitalise from a rebound, keeper's mistake etc. I also think missing chances can drain the confidence of most strikers.
