Salah tests positive for coronavirus – Egyptian FA

Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) has tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Egypt.

The Egyptian Football Association announced on Friday that the Liverpool midfielder returned a positive test ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Togo but is asymptomatic.

The (translated) statement read:

The medical swab conducted on the mission of our first national football team showed that our international player, Mohamed Salah, the star of Liverpool, was infected with the coronavirus after his test came out positive – although he does not suffer from any symptoms.

[He] was subject to the medical protocol after the coordination of the national team doctor, Dr Muhammad Abu Al-Ola, with his English club, Liverpool, in addition to isolating him in his room and also isolating all contacts.

In a later announcement, Egypt confirmed that a second test backed up the findings of the first:

At the time of writing, Liverpool have yet to confirm the news.

Barring any further developments, Salah will now have to undergo a period of self-isolation and will very likely be unavailable for the Gameweek 9 visit of Leicester City.

The Reds are already injury-ravaged heading into that fixture, with Joe Gomez (£5.4m) joining Virgil van Dijk (£6.3m) on the sidelines and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) also a major doubt with a calf problem.

Sadio Mane (£12.0m) of course tested positive for coronavirus last month, returning to training at Melwood after a 10-day period of self-isolation and featuring for the Reds in the Merseyside derby, 15 days after his initial diagnosis.

Salah could feasibly return in Gameweek 10, then, if a similar timeframe of recovery, isolation and return to training pans out – although there is also the small matter of a flight back to England in between.

We have already seen West Bromwich Albion’s Callum Robinson (£5.5m) withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad after returning a positive test of his own.

Wolves’ Conor Coady (£5.0m) is also self-isolating after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Earlier on Friday, Ireland revealed that Alan Browne had returned a positive coronavirus test after playing against England – although the Football Association of Ireland added that “no close contacts of the player” had been identified.

The only scenario I'd be moving salah on is if I had 2ft banked, no bench cover and wouldn't be losing too much tv from it.

This looks like a -4 as it stands, TM, to me. But hard to call exact swaps yet until we have a better idea on Salah.

TAA out to a 4.5 would give great funds for two attacking moves

With two transfers in the sky rocket, I do think for a couple of hits over next two weeks you can perform major surgery and get a team you like. Looks a bit ropey now in places (I guess you're hit-averse, looking at some players still there?) perhaps, but can be changed a lot for not much damage.
          I think, anyway

From the time of actually being infected it can take 5 days until you test positive and until then you are likely to get a negative result, this is why many countries require two negative tests 7 days apart to ensure travellers can leave a quarantine.

For Salah to have tested positive he must had already had Covid for a few days at least.

We will know over the next few days a bit more, but if he does not develop symptoms or they are mild he will be will be fine.

Long Covid sufferers are those had have had quite severe symptoms and suffer further issues after recovery over a longer period of time as a consequence ... I doubt Salah is going to fall into this category

I'd have thought he'll go down, loads of days to do so - rest of this week, then next at least. Bound to fall at least once. So I think you'd be all right.

Surely what he has now is Salah, and he's debating how to deal with it?
Points will also be zero, so 'points over value' doesn't really stand, here.

So I guess I'm saying that's crap advice.

The issue seems to be the risk of buying him back for more than he sells him for, therefore hold him and bench him.

My point is so what, lose some value but get a player with a higher ceiling than your incoming bench.

For me it’s Bruno and captaining him, so I will lose .1 maybe but gamble that against maybe getting 10 more points than my bench fodder may get me

          #points over value

          1. Bennerman
            • 5 Years
            3 years, 4 months ago

But he bought him for 12.3 so clearly he won't lose value, so not really the instance to invoke the 'points over value' rule

            1. Hotdogs for Tea
              • 8 Years
              3 years, 4 months ago

yes he did, but the question is a worry it seems based on Salah’s value, I suggested ignore the value side of it, but you are right he may not even lose any value and in that case my advice is even sounder 😉

It is probable that he can buy him back for the same sell price, but it is also possible that Salah could drop .2 also ... who knows ?

              1. Bennerman
                • 5 Years
                3 years, 4 months ago

Well exactly. I'm certain he will drop one, in which case value doesn't matter in this specific case, and I'm minded that he will drop two - which becomes an issue contrary to what you're espousing, as he could both sell a non-scoring player and save value in the case of selling him now and buying him back for 12.2, in the meantime him having scored no points.

                All theoretical of course, anyeay

    GW 9 | Vardy (liv), Berge/Soucek, Mane
    GW 10-11 | Mane -> Salah

GW 9 | Werner (new), Berge vs Soucek (will have to play both), bench Salah
    GW 10 | Werner -> Vardy (ful)

I am not allergic to taking hits if needed. Also if I moved Salah he will come back for Fulham GW12. Don’t think Salah is essential next 3.

Salah is never really really essential. The point of him is that he never costs you any transfers

It's just kicking the can down the road and imo transfers/hits look way more appealing before GW10

I might have to give up one of TAA or Aubameyang in one of my draft leagues...

I just feel the money would be better spent on undrained options like Cancelo, Maddison, Jota, Jesus, Antonio.

Thinking long term, would you give up either Trent or Auba?

    1. Bennerman
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

Admittedly only having played draft only twice, knowing it's long-term to get rid of either makes it harder. Imagine some other punk raking in their points for the rest of the season.
Saying that, when I played it I was dead chuffed with my initial pick of KDB. It was the injury season and I kept him for ages, getting rid would have been far better. I just couldn't let go of such an asset for far too long, cost me.

I've not helped here either way

I’ve 2.5 itb and 2 FTs. Have Kane, Son and Salah and not much of a bench. Considering the following:

    9: Salah to Bruno
    10. Son to Salah
At some point in the future: Bruno to Son

Leaves my other change for necessities. Thoughts?

Yes but considering they will be for city, Utd, villa who all have decent fixtures now anyway you could probably use it now to take advantage of everyone else flailing around over the IB and still set yourself up for the doubles

    McCarthy
    Chilwell Zouma Sais
    Salah* KDB Son Podance
    Jimenez DCL Maupay

    Bench: Soucek, Konsa, Mitchell

    Any opinion appreciated.

Depends on Salah I think - maybe next week better as there'll be more visibility, you probs don't want to WC while not knowing whether or not you're including the Egyptian in your draft?

Yup just do it now, you'll end up with pretty much the same players whether wc this week or next week, and Man City are favourites to beat spurs anyway

Is Drossard > Soucek my best move here? Happy to hold Salah for a bit to see how his situation develops. Thanks.

    Martinez (Forster)
    Chilwell, KWP, Coufal, Saiss, Mitchell
    Bruno, Salah, Grealish, Son, Trossard
    Kane, DCL, Brewster
    1 FT; £0.8M ITB.

(PS: Don't want to roll FT because I also have Mitchell and Saiss to worry about)

If Salah ends up being out for two gameweeks then he's likely to drop enough so that the majority don't lose value on him.

Also, the option of Bruno could easily get those points back in the interim.

Are we that sure he's only out for the 1 gw. I don't think he would need rushing back for Brighton...

    1. caldracula
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

No one knows yet, wait for more news. If he’s out for one week then bench. If it’s two then it’s an easy move to KDB/Bruno even for a hit.

    2. Pacer.
      • 9 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

If he is symptomless then 'rushing back' won't be a thing

Besides. Once Leicester beat Liverpool at Anfield I don't think they'll be taking anything for granted

    3. El Presidente
      • 4 Years

No one knows. I understand both sides of the argument tbh. If it's about TV and you don't have bench alternatives maybe sell, but if you have bench cover and ends up being just one GW out it seems silly to spend 2 transfers taking him out and bringing him back... No?

      1. Heiro
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

Yes it's a tricky one. I have Brewster and Justin on the bench with Podence playing.

Worried about Bruno against West brom. Gonna be sick if I'm sitting here watching Bruno get 15 points, all to save 0.1 on Salah and a transfer.

On a WC, let's try to keep it simple.

    1. Get Vardy (liv) now
    Start Berge/Soucek
    Get Mane this week
    Mane to Salah whenever fit

    2. Get Werner (new)
Berge vs Soucek (will have to play both)
    Bench Salah
Vardy in for Werner next week

Mo and Delap to Jota and Vardy for - 8 is tempting me as a short and medium term fix for a depleted squad.
