Salah tests positive for coronavirus – Egyptian FA

Mohamed Salah (£12.4m) has tested positive for coronavirus while on international duty with Egypt.

The Egyptian Football Association announced on Friday that the Liverpool midfielder returned a positive test ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Togo but is asymptomatic.

The (translated) statement read:

The medical swab conducted on the mission of our first national football team showed that our international player, Mohamed Salah, the star of Liverpool, was infected with the coronavirus after his test came out positive – although he does not suffer from any symptoms.

[He] was subject to the medical protocol after the coordination of the national team doctor, Dr Muhammad Abu Al-Ola, with his English club, Liverpool, in addition to isolating him in his room and also isolating all contacts.

In a later announcement, Egypt confirmed that a second test backed up the findings of the first:

At the time of writing, Liverpool have yet to confirm the news.

Barring any further developments, Salah will now have to undergo a period of self-isolation and will very likely be unavailable for the Gameweek 9 visit of Leicester City.

The Reds are already injury-ravaged heading into that fixture, with Joe Gomez (£5.4m) joining Virgil van Dijk (£6.3m) on the sidelines and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) also a major doubt with a calf problem.

Sadio Mane (£12.0m) of course tested positive for coronavirus last month, returning to training at Melwood after a 10-day period of self-isolation and featuring for the Reds in the Merseyside derby, 15 days after his initial diagnosis.

Salah could feasibly return in Gameweek 10, then, if a similar timeframe of recovery, isolation and return to training pans out – although there is also the small matter of a flight back to England in between.

We have already seen West Bromwich Albion’s Callum Robinson (£5.5m) withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad after returning a positive test of his own.

Wolves’ Conor Coady (£5.0m) is also self-isolating after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Earlier on Friday, Ireland revealed that Alan Browne had returned a positive coronavirus test after playing against England – although the Football Association of Ireland added that “no close contacts of the player” had been identified.

B is less likely to get 0 points than A from goals conceded (higher floor)

Yet, A is more capable of a haul (higher ceiling)

Fixture-wise: Wolves attack is less potent than the current Villa attack, with S'oton more reliable to park a bus to secure a late draw or consolidate a win than Brighton. Yet, Lamptey is more likely to score

Lamptey has amazing open play threat, Vest has undeniable set-piece threat, with some good dead ball deliverers in that team (esp JWP)

It's a coin toss for me

Patience will be rewarded 😉 none of the defs likely to get clean sheets, a rare attacking return. So would go for the attacker.

Though I’m considering playing Taylor over Brewster as Brewster seems less likely to score than Podence

So Salah cannot leave Egypt till confirmed clear of Covid, two checks after quarantine period.
Broken bubble requirements will need to be re introduced to come inline with rest of team.
What are the UK requirements, protocols for returning from Egypt?
I cannot see him taking part in either of Pools next two prem games?

Egyptian authorities declared that Salah got Covid19 but no one else. They then retracted that statement and a few hours later declared that 3 members of the group had tested positive for Covid19 but we don't know who.

This looks to me like they thought Salah got Covid at the wedding so tried to cover it up by claiming others in the team have it also. Therefore we are left to assume that Salah could have gotten Covid from a team mate etc. They obviously knew that the wedding didn't comply to Covid security protocols from the images and video evidence online.

The authorities were reported to be responsible for Salahs Covid security arrangements when he went to the wedding.

Price changes shouldn't really affect your decision in this case. Will you want Salah back after he's fit? I know I will immediately because of captaincy, and this would essentially mean another transfer (-4 hit given how important transfers will be). I'm not going for it because I don't see Bruno scoring 8 more points than my bench option during this short period.

      1. DannyDrinkVodka
        • 4 Years

I think Bruno will certainly outscore my first bench option by 8 points in the interim, besides I don’t really see any opportunities to captain Salah until GW12

@Brosstan I was personally laughing at the funny names.

But it's important to know who has signed it [Great Barrington Declaration]. It's certainly not 175,000 pandemic experts, nor even 175,000 'serious scientists'. It's not like it was passed around the University of Oxford for signatures from esteemed colleagues. They were clearly looking for volume. Not to mention it's sponsored by a libertarian think tank. You can't have people sign your declaration and demand that people pay attention if you don't allow scrutiny over who actually signed it. It's just part of the deal. It descredits the declaration only insofar as it discrets the narrative that 175,000 people who know better have signed it.

Not everything has to be an argument mate.

The folks that initiated the Great Barrington declaration do not claim that 175,000 experts have signed it, and to assume this is folly; what is interesting is the list of experts on their home page which includes a nobel prize winner amongst a whole host of other reputable names.

I would recommend anyone that is interested watch this podcast I am linking which is thought provoking in its content, especially in relation to those countries that have initiated lockdowns such as the UK.

Yeah this isn't a normal week where salah out of the picture might make me think mane could hog the points, this is VvD and Trent, two players crucial to attack development, Gomez and Salah out. This is a fairly dire situation and I feel very comfortable not having any liverpool players going into this. Also very happy to bring Justin on for Salah, expecting a 2 pointer but knowing there is a fair chance of some kind of return

Pool have a deeper squad than most PL teams. Will be tricker than normally but they need to get used to not always having their best 11. If they lost Allison and had to depend on Adrian it would be worse.

I agree with this, but, it's leicester. They've won six in a row in all comps, scoring 15 and conceding two. Liverpool's form is fine but these are major hits to them, not to mention fabinho potentially being OOP. I don't fancy any liverpool player picking up points as a given

Cheers..... I guess if it is 1 game missing I'll bench.

But if its 2 games missing ill need to lose.

Just hope there is clarity next week

    Keep or sale Salah?

Sell, don’t let anyone convince you to bench 12+ million for what could be multiple GWs

Two gameweeks. Not rocket science. Sell or keep are viable depending on situation

What if, after you sell Salah, one of your other players does their hamstring and will be out for months? Prob sell but at least keep him until Friday.

Depends on circumstances. I am not selling at all. I am happy with my bench and it's just 2 gameweeks. It all depends on your team and transfer situation. There is nothing wrong with your plan. It's just not the only move. There are legitimate options

I have read salah only has to isolate for 10 days. So this would mean 1 league game missed. So in that scenario bench him.

If it turns out he is likely to miss more than 1 game I think sell

He cannot return from Egypt till clear, then Pools & UK protocols kick in.
1 player cannot jeperdise the squad?

Perhaps - while I don't know the ins and outs of protocols - there is clearly special rules for elite athletes.

Media reports say he's likely to miss Leicester and then the champs league game. So hopefully backdoor gw10. Hopefully there will be some clarity next week

Salah’s second COVID-19 test returned a positive sample, meaning he’ll now self-isolate and return to Merseyside just before the Brighton game – which to Jurgen Klopp’s likely fury – is the 12:30 kick off on the Saturday after a Wednesday Champions League tie.

Roll the transfer. Suck it up and use your bench. Mini WC in GW10 if it looks good and you could be going into beautiful fixtures with Chilwell (TAA), KdB (Son), Vardy (Kane) if the spurs players don't haul in GW9 and complicate matters

    On a WC, help needed!

    Martinez Forster
    PvA Lamptey Justin Taylor Lewis
Salah/Mane KdB Bruno (Soucek vs Berge)
    Werner/Vardy Richarlison Watkins

    1. Bench : Salah
Play : Werner (new), Soucek & Berge
    GW 10 : Werner -> Vardy (FUL)

    B) Play : Mane, Vardy (liv), Soucek
    GW 10-11 : Mane -> Salah
    Probably miss Werner's haul.

It appears to me those with low team value are most likely to be looking for a justification to sell Salah.

Nope, just a hunch as so many wanted to bring in Bruno before the Salah news and couldn't really afford to.

Four South Korean internationals have tested positive for coronavirus. Son is not one of them but he has been quarantining in his hotel room until further test results this morning, which will decide whether their game with Mexico takes place in Austria tonight

Have Salah, Foden & Wilson and only 1 FT.
Going to be a long week waiting for news till Friday.

Definitely doing Foden ➡️ Grealish for free.

    If Wilson is not fit:

    A) Wilson ➡️ Bamford/Antonio
    (Keep Salah and start Bissouma)

    B) Salah ➡️ KDB/Bruno
    (Keep Wilson and start Bissouma)

    C) Salah & Wilson ➡️ Bruno & Vardy
(Will sell Kane, Son & Bruno in GW11-12 to get KDB & Salah back)

    Appreciate your help! 🙂

C, gives the option of keeping Bruno or doubling up on kdb and sterling if you don't bring Salah back immediately

      My guess would be

      Mane
      Jota - Firmino - Shaqiri
      Wijnaldum - Henderson
      Robbo - Matip - Fabinho/Phillips - Milner
      Alisson

Lots of possible combinations though, especially in the front 4 - if he uses one.
