Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope: Which FPL players are nearing a one-match ban?

Those who keep an eye on the Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for several Premier League players.

The respite provided by the final international break of 2020 seems like a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

The yellow card amnesty is not until after the completion of a team’s 19 league fixtures (more on that later), after which the threshold moves up from five to ten bookings.

Those Fantasy Premier League assets already sitting on three and especially four cautions still have a long way to go before they are in the clear, then.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

There is only one player who is currently a solitary yellow card away from suspension: Leicester City’s Jonny Evans (£5.5m).

The Northern Ireland international has managed to rack up four cautions in just five league appearances this season, the latest of which came in Gameweek 8.

With Caglar Soyuncu (£5.3m) a longer-term absentee and news awaited on the severity of Wesley Fofana’s (£5.0m) knee injury, the Foxes can’t afford to lose many more bodies at the heart of their defence.

Evans’ four bookings have come from just six fouls conceded, at least, so the experienced stopper is hardly flirting with danger on a regular basis.

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

While Evans is out in front on his own on four bookings, there is a baker’s dozen of Premier League players who are just a caution behind.

Most are lower-owned FPL assets and/or agricultural midfield types but there are a handful of semi-popular options within the list.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) boasts a double-digit ownership, while Hector Bellerin (£5.1m) was among the top five most-bought defenders of Gameweek 8.

Those two players sit in 19.7% and 16.4% of the top 10,000 squads respectively.

John McGinn (£5.5m) saw his ownership increase sixfold after his early-season heroics, while Mateusz Klich‘s (£5.6m) own purple patch of form and penalty-taking responsibilities have seen him become the fifth most-popular budget midfield option under £6.0m.

Of the 14 players on three or four yellow cards, Klich has committed the most fouls. Indeed, only two top-flight players have fouled the opposition on more occasions than the Pole (19).

There are no surprises to see Oriel Romeu (£4.5m) on the above table: the Southampton midfield spoiler and emergency bench fodder option has racked up over ten times as many yellow cards as he has FPL attacking returns in his Premier League career.

John Lundstram‘s (£5.1m) name appearing on the list would have been headline news in 2019/20 but given his recategorization as an FPL midfielder, uncertain future at Bramall Lane and plummeting ownership, he is but a mere footnote this season.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

As we mentioned in the introduction, the yellow card threshold is raised to ten after 19 league fixtures.

In most seasons, that would ordinarily mean after the completion of Gameweek 19 – but this is no ordinary campaign.

Aston Villa, Burnley, Manchester City and Manchester United are a game behind the other 16 top-flight clubs, with word awaited on the rearrangement of their respective Blank Gameweek 1 fixtures.

We have also yet to see how a complicated-looking January schedule pans out, with the ‘Matchweek 18’ games split into two and sandwiching Gameweek 19.

And any unexpected postponements between now and then would, of course, further affect the ’19th fixture’ cut-off point.

The threshold for ten yellow cards is after 32 league matches, which will be mid-April at the earliest.

Players collecting ten bookings before that point will serve a two-game ban.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

    Mo Salah or No Salah

Pros and cons if he is out for the match vs Leicester

    Pros
    1) Savings.
Money itb, no matter who’s coming in.
    2) 1 or 2 games
You get a player who will play in 2 games and not in one.
E.g. You hold on Salah and you have a match with Brighton (away).
If you replace him with Bruno you have a player for 2 games: West Brom and Southampton.
    3) Captaincy.
GW 10 and GW 11 you have better captain options with Kdb, Vardy, and Calvert Lewin.

    Cons
    1) Value.
He is now worth £ 12.4, for those who took him at £ 12.0.
When you’ll get him back you’ll have to pay more.
However if you get rid of him now at £ 12.2 and his0 price drops to £ 12.3 or even £ 12.2, little harm.
    2) Form.
He has his best start in the first 8 games in fpl, even better than the year 17/18 when he broke the absolute record of points with 303.
    3) Fixtures.
Liverpool may be plagued by many absences but the eases off after GW14
But is it too far? GW is on Boxing Day.

Man City with 2 great games at home and Bruno with 2 games away….I am very tempted to get rid of him.

    Thoughts?

If one game definitely keeping, two games becomes slightly trickier but still think I will keep. Have Soucek coming in, and he has potential for returns.

I think one of kdb or raz with cancelo is better than kdb and raz together.
You can't find the right captain if you have both and it's gonna be very frustrating.
        Less money spend as well

I dont believe he´s gonna be ready for BHA. My benchmark is CR7, also a mega star, aguably THE mega star. He got diagnosed on a IB as well didnt play France vs Portugal and missed 3 league games + 1CL game for Juventus and he was in Portugal not in Egypt.

From the moment he joined utd ha hasn't a single blank away.
Not a single one and he has 2 away games in the next 3 with Brom at home.

It's related to how United set up.
Home Bruno & United tend to keep possession and be aggressive in possession.

Away tgey set up for counter attacking style. He is a energy battery so doesn't get tired hence keep making runs in box.

I was waiting for you haha!

Another interesting fact is that Pogba has played 4 times more than 60 mins.

Bruno has all his banks in 3 of these games and the 4th was the penalty vs Brighton after the final whistle

I don't think Pogba affects Bruno attacking wise too much. He affects United's defensive shape when not in possession (which makes Bruno run more to grab possession but as i said above the lad is extremely fit hence doesn't get tired despite pressing like madman over whole game)

    Martinez | Forster

    1a. Jota) 1b) Zaha, 1c) Eze
    2. Salah & Podence => Bruno/Rashford & Jota for -4.
    3. Save FT and play Lamptey/Bissouma for Salah.

The general consensus among math people is that "multiplication by juxtaposition" (that is, multiplying by just putting things next to each other, rather than using the "×" sign) indicates that the juxtaposed values must be multiplied together before processing other operations.

I think you can include Klopp and Mourinho in that. I can see a war of words on the horizon after this IB between clubs and county. Not going well is it?

Well and truly blowing up in the face of whoever made the decision to just carry on with Internationals. Stupid idea.

I get it with the PL, The masters, The TDF and such like...it’s how they make their living....so they either do it in a limited way or the sport goes bust. Some of the stuff football is indulging in is completely unnecessary.

We're slightly hypocrite about international games in general 🙂
In UCL also United travelled to Turkey.

But yes, that's money ball. So important for economic structure of club football. But as you said international friendlies can be scrapped completely.

What can be done is organising qualifiers over summer break. 1 month near by stadiums. Just like UCL last season.

Don't agree. Someone called a pandemic and to carry on with international friendlies is nonsense (are there any fans at the game? It's a spectator sport after all). To flout the rules and invite Iceland to play at Wembley is just ridiculous, regardless of which camp you're in. Bring in Leeds or a championship side to give em a good run all day 🙂

Playing in a "safe" country like Albania would be dumber - I expect Denmark has higher Covid figures than Albania due to better testing / diagnosis

Good point also - I just don't see the point of international friendlies, during a global pandemic. There are FA cup teams and similar in other leagues that give teams a good run for their money. Keep it local, invite fans, let's get on with the game 🙂

Kane & Son have City so going to steer away from that.

Did he? Sometimes players are better in their national squad than their club side. I don’t believe he’s become a bad player but he’s clearly struggling with goal scoring opportunities at Liverpool at the moment. I think the same about Jimenez but in his case he seems lost without that regular supply from the wings without Docherty and Jota and opportunities are coming straight down the middle from the midfield. Maybe Jota is displacing Firmino like Bale seemed to bypass Son last weekend?

Already taken a -4, have no idea what to do with my team, don't really like it and struggling with rank atm.

Any ideas? Thinking of taking another hit to take Salah out as Bissouma won't do anything, maybe Ziyech which would allow me to upgrade Son to KDB and Bowen to James. Might even play FH if I get another few injuries lol

This Salah thing isn’t that bad. Look at it as a guaranteed time injury during international break. We all no how long he has to isolate for so surely it’s not as bad as say KDB’s injury in the last IB. Is he isn’t he. In this case he is. 10 days from yesterday. Back gw10 probably mid week champions league. It’s only one week in reality. Much better than a hammy or groin injury.

You're going to need your FH chip to manage the split GW18 or FA Cup blanks. There is nothing going on this week that can't be fixed with patience, and maybe a hit or two nearer the deadline.

Why is skypsports saying he's "a doubt"?

      https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12010/12132489/mohamed-salah-liverpool-forward-a-doubt-for-leicester-clash-after-second-test-confirms-covid-19

Are there scenarios where Salah can actually play Leiceister?

None. 10 days isolation. Tested positve Friday means the Leicester game is 8 days into his isolation.

Agree, they shouldn't say "doubt" then.

Play Cancelo though it's difficult to give a decent verdict w/o context

      How is this move looking?

      Salah + Son > Mane + Sterling (-4)

Just enough for this,5th -4 in a row but looks good

Already have KDB? I'd prefer him but yeah it could definitely pay off with City's fixtures.

Dont have KDB,will go with Sterling.

Won’t mean squat. More likely score more now as he needs to bonus to pay his insurance premium. 😉
