Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope: Which FPL players are nearing a one-match ban?

Those who keep an eye on the Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for several Premier League players.

The respite provided by the final international break of 2020 seems like a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

The yellow card amnesty is not until after the completion of a team’s 19 league fixtures (more on that later), after which the threshold moves up from five to ten bookings.

Those Fantasy Premier League assets already sitting on three and especially four cautions still have a long way to go before they are in the clear, then.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

There is only one player who is currently a solitary yellow card away from suspension: Leicester City’s Jonny Evans (£5.5m).

The Northern Ireland international has managed to rack up four cautions in just five league appearances this season, the latest of which came in Gameweek 8.

With Caglar Soyuncu (£5.3m) a longer-term absentee and news awaited on the severity of Wesley Fofana’s (£5.0m) knee injury, the Foxes can’t afford to lose many more bodies at the heart of their defence.

Evans’ four bookings have come from just six fouls conceded, at least, so the experienced stopper is hardly flirting with danger on a regular basis.

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

While Evans is out in front on his own on four bookings, there is a baker’s dozen of Premier League players who are just a caution behind.

Most are lower-owned FPL assets and/or agricultural midfield types but there are a handful of semi-popular options within the list.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) boasts a double-digit ownership, while Hector Bellerin (£5.1m) was among the top five most-bought defenders of Gameweek 8.

Those two players sit in 19.7% and 16.4% of the top 10,000 squads respectively.

John McGinn (£5.5m) saw his ownership increase sixfold after his early-season heroics, while Mateusz Klich‘s (£5.6m) own purple patch of form and penalty-taking responsibilities have seen him become the fifth most-popular budget midfield option under £6.0m.

Of the 14 players on three or four yellow cards, Klich has committed the most fouls. Indeed, only two top-flight players have fouled the opposition on more occasions than the Pole (19).

There are no surprises to see Oriel Romeu (£4.5m) on the above table: the Southampton midfield spoiler and emergency bench fodder option has racked up over ten times as many yellow cards as he has FPL attacking returns in his Premier League career.

John Lundstram‘s (£5.1m) name appearing on the list would have been headline news in 2019/20 but given his recategorization as an FPL midfielder, uncertain future at Bramall Lane and plummeting ownership, he is but a mere footnote this season.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

As we mentioned in the introduction, the yellow card threshold is raised to ten after 19 league fixtures.

In most seasons, that would ordinarily mean after the completion of Gameweek 19 – but this is no ordinary campaign.

Aston Villa, Burnley, Manchester City and Manchester United are a game behind the other 16 top-flight clubs, with word awaited on the rearrangement of their respective Blank Gameweek 1 fixtures.

We have also yet to see how a complicated-looking January schedule pans out, with the ‘Matchweek 18’ games split into two and sandwiching Gameweek 19.

And any unexpected postponements between now and then would, of course, further affect the ’19th fixture’ cut-off point.

The threshold for ten yellow cards is after 32 league matches, which will be mid-April at the earliest.

Players collecting ten bookings before that point will serve a two-game ban.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

Looking to fill X, Y and Z with one of the following options before moving to Salah, Bamford and Soucek in GW12. Have a little wiggle room with money itb.

    (i) Two of Ziyech, Zaha or Hamez + Richarlison

    WC draft:

    McCarthy / (Forster)
    R James / Chilwell / Cancelo / (J Lewis) / (Coufal)
    KDB / Sterling / Bruno / Grealish / (Stephens)
    DCL / Bamford / Watkins

    1.6 in the banks.

Thoughts? The Chelsea double up is a risk but feel that James and Chilwell have such good attacking potential. Think Sterling only needs a goal to get himself going, and with those fixtures...

Thank you. Got Ziyech in at 8.0 before his Sheff Utd haul so he's in my team currently. Love him as a player but struggling to fit him in. Could move to 3-5-2 and get rid of Watkins, but would have less in the bank to bring Salah back down the line.

Look at the pool of budget strikers you can move to when you get injuries/loss of form. Do you really want a team where your options for your entire front line amount to about 3 players

Yeah, this is a very good point. I remember wildcarding into a frontline of Pukki, Haller and Ashley Barnes(!) early last season. All dropped off form and I used that as a lesson learnt.

Everton, Villa and Leeds are look good attacking teams this season, no? If I stick with this front 3, would just be hoping that my midfield compensates for any loss of form.

        1. Pacer.

Yes. DCL looks great, no doubt. But not one of those strikers has real pedigree and there is a real chance they could all misfire. 2 don't even have pens or set pieces. Replacements all play for average to rubbish teams so there's a high chance they won't be firing, or may be crocked. 3 other players simply isn't enough to service a frontline of 3 players. You're also in a position where if a mid price or premium really starts hitting it hard then you're stuffed.

This is what I would've thought too however Olson has me reconsidering.

I'm thinking the likes of Ziyech, Zaha, Hamez, etc. can cover for when the cheap strikers are out of form.

          Eg.
Werner + Hamez + Soucek vs. Watkins + Hamez + Ziyech

I just think anyone going all out with 3 budgets is going to be chasing their tail. The risks are well documented. Mitigate them by going with 1 or 2 budgets and at least a 9.5 but preferably a kane or Vardy. The power midfield is usually a mistake in my experience because it is bought at the expense of balance and flexibility

I see what you mean. I just feel that with City's upcoming fixtures, both Sterling and KDB could go nuts. And Bruno looks great as a Salah 'placeholder' for the next 2 or 3. I wouldn't usually go for 2 budgets in Bamford or Watkins, but I feel we've seen enough from Everton, Leeds and Villa already which shows they're 3 good, attacking sides.

Everton and Villa have good fixtures for the next few. Leeds not so much, but they've shown they can create/score against anyone.

I think what's swaying me towards Sterling is that I don't want to have to choose just 1 of KDB or Sterling, as you can't tell which one of them will haul. Cover both bases and just get both, is what I'm thinking - especially for this fixture run while Salah looks out for at least a week or so.

I’ve changed my planned transfers 3 or 4 times since the end of last gw - if I’d made the moves early to save cash I’d be looking at a -8 or -12 or not fielding a full team. Who knows what injuries/Covid situation will be in next week. Think having all the info is way more beneficial then 0.1 or 0.2

Salah will miss one game at the most i reckon so if you want him back i would say no.
Bruno is a great long term pick either way.

Congratulations on knocking us out of the Munster championship btw.
Looks like Cork will win their first football title since 2012 when they meet Tipp in the final.

Cheers, it’s scant reward for years in the wilderness but it’ll be great for the team/management at large.
Might be the boost they need!

Yeah ye needed it alright and it would be good for us too in the long term if we were getting stiffer competition from Cork like they used give us in the olden days.

Just a pity the pubs are closed up because that will be an epic celebration around Cork city if/when the win the title.

In drafting a WC team, I am wondering how others are approaching your bench.

How many enablers have you opted for?
Full (albeit cheap) playing bench in case of COVID?

      2 enablers usually both def

cheap enablers are fine, but they must be nailed

If by "enabler" you mean minimum-priced player, I've got 2 (4.0 def and 4.5 mid). Hopefully they'll all play, although I acknowledge Phillips is not risk-free.

2 ft and 0.5m itb.bi would like Bruno, but how to get him. I am considering rodriguez + wilson to Bruno + Davis (4.3) but have to do it tonight if so

    Mccarthy - 4m
    Justin - Lamptey - Zouma - Mitchell - Chillwell
    Salah - Son - rodriguez - grealish - Zaha
    Kane - dcl - wilson

Was originally considering Son, Robbo > Bruno, Cancelo (-4) but now with Salah out prob for a couple I’m unsure... what do you think?

(Btw I bought Salah for 12.0 fwiw)

    1FT 0.8itb

    Martinez
    Robbo, Chilwell, Cresswell
    Salah*, Son, Ziyech, Grealish
    Kane, DCL, Bamford
    (Forster) (KWP, Stephens, Branthwaite)

Unsure whether Bruno or KDB is the right choice for this GW

    Cheers

I’d have a plan to get salah back in but to me this is an opportunity to get ahead and with no obvious captain this week I can go for Bruno who then has 2 nice away games. Can then monitor salah situation and get him back in - probably will involve a -4 tho but hoping it can pay off

            Yeh I don’t disagree.

What about Robbo? Just hold and use later to fund other moves if he does nothing vs LEI?

I think if salah is missing 1 or 2 games then I’d be happy to hold robbo. Although he still has 2 Scotland games to get through so who knows what’ll happen! Wouldn’t rule out your original planned transfers but just feels wrong to remove 2 good players like robbo and son when salah is very unlikely to play. I’d wait until last minute to do your moves and hopefully we’ll get some confirmation on salah

Yep will def wait to make moves! Stuff the price changes!

                Could even do:
Salah, Son > Bruno, KDB (-4) to be a bit spicy 😉

Only issue is I’m currently left with 0.3itb after that move. Too many price swings before deadline and the move is dead

I’m becoming increasingly tempted to WC as this week goes on, despite rolling 2FTs into this week.

    From:

    Martinez McCarthy
    TAA Dier Saiss Justin Balbuena
    Salah Son Grealish Podence Bissouma
    Kane DCL Wilson

    To:

    Martinez McCarthy
    Chilwell Cancelo Cresswell Justin Burn
    KdB Bruno Ziyech Grealish Bissouma
    Kane DCL Watkins

Feels like an upgrade and addresses the Wolves pair (ropey) and the Liverpool pair (worrying).

Any glaring holes in the WC team, do you reckon?

Yeah I’d been happy to try and maybe do 3 transfers -4, but really Dier’s fixtures are bad now, Saiss not first choice, TAA injured, Podence rubbish, Salah out, Wilson probably out. It’s become a lot of fires to deal with all of a sudden.

In the KdB v Vardy debate, how much of a factor is GW 12-17 rotation?

Two midweek fixtures in 3 weeks.

At 33 and with a few muscle tweaks in the last year, I feel like Brendan could hand Jamie a rest over that period. That said, Kev could feasibly get 1 rest in there given Pep roulette.

    Thoughts?

Hard to second guess pep but personally would go kdb every time with those fixtures - for me there’s bigger upside potential as well with kdb compared to Vardy

        • 12 Years

Fair - I always feel like Vardy is just as likely to get a double digit haul, but maybe my perception is skewed by more recent results

Vardy isn't really needed in Europa League so I don't think he is too much at risk until the Christmas period.

There is some rotation risk with KDB although it's probably less than the rest of their attackers including Sterling.
