Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope: Which FPL players are nearing a one-match ban?

Those who keep an eye on the Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for several Premier League players.

The respite provided by the final international break of 2020 seems like a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

The yellow card amnesty is not until after the completion of a team’s 19 league fixtures (more on that later), after which the threshold moves up from five to ten bookings.

Those Fantasy Premier League assets already sitting on three and especially four cautions still have a long way to go before they are in the clear, then.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

There is only one player who is currently a solitary yellow card away from suspension: Leicester City’s Jonny Evans (£5.5m).

The Northern Ireland international has managed to rack up four cautions in just five league appearances this season, the latest of which came in Gameweek 8.

With Caglar Soyuncu (£5.3m) a longer-term absentee and news awaited on the severity of Wesley Fofana’s (£5.0m) knee injury, the Foxes can’t afford to lose many more bodies at the heart of their defence.

Evans’ four bookings have come from just six fouls conceded, at least, so the experienced stopper is hardly flirting with danger on a regular basis.

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

While Evans is out in front on his own on four bookings, there is a baker’s dozen of Premier League players who are just a caution behind.

Most are lower-owned FPL assets and/or agricultural midfield types but there are a handful of semi-popular options within the list.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) boasts a double-digit ownership, while Hector Bellerin (£5.1m) was among the top five most-bought defenders of Gameweek 8.

Those two players sit in 19.7% and 16.4% of the top 10,000 squads respectively.

John McGinn (£5.5m) saw his ownership increase sixfold after his early-season heroics, while Mateusz Klich‘s (£5.6m) own purple patch of form and penalty-taking responsibilities have seen him become the fifth most-popular budget midfield option under £6.0m.

Of the 14 players on three or four yellow cards, Klich has committed the most fouls. Indeed, only two top-flight players have fouled the opposition on more occasions than the Pole (19).

There are no surprises to see Oriel Romeu (£4.5m) on the above table: the Southampton midfield spoiler and emergency bench fodder option has racked up over ten times as many yellow cards as he has FPL attacking returns in his Premier League career.

John Lundstram‘s (£5.1m) name appearing on the list would have been headline news in 2019/20 but given his recategorization as an FPL midfielder, uncertain future at Bramall Lane and plummeting ownership, he is but a mere footnote this season.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

As we mentioned in the introduction, the yellow card threshold is raised to ten after 19 league fixtures.

In most seasons, that would ordinarily mean after the completion of Gameweek 19 – but this is no ordinary campaign.

Aston Villa, Burnley, Manchester City and Manchester United are a game behind the other 16 top-flight clubs, with word awaited on the rearrangement of their respective Blank Gameweek 1 fixtures.

We have also yet to see how a complicated-looking January schedule pans out, with the ‘Matchweek 18’ games split into two and sandwiching Gameweek 19.

And any unexpected postponements between now and then would, of course, further affect the ’19th fixture’ cut-off point.

The threshold for ten yellow cards is after 32 league matches, which will be mid-April at the earliest.

Players collecting ten bookings before that point will serve a two-game ban.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

First article published at 10:13 yesterday, second one at 20:50 when new information had emerged regarding Salah experiencing quote “mild symptoms”. Can’t see him playing against Leicester personally, beyond that it’s anyone’s guess. All depends on when he tests negative and how he’s getting on fitness wise.

Big chance Salah is only out for 1 game right? Bit surprised that so many want to sell him. Will cost us 2 FT’s to sell and bring back.

No-one knows. If he started developing symptoms and got worse, though unlikely , it could be more than 2 PL games. Wait and see.

Mo Salah will have another swab test after 5 days, if it was negative he will travel back to England, if it was positive he will wait another 5 days and then have another swab test. (twitter.com)

Hopefully we'll know by the deadline.

I think we'll know by the deadline if he's out for 1 or 2. If he's out for only 1 it's not worth the 2 FTs for me because the replacement will not be worth cover the cost of 2 FTs in 1 GW, so I'll keep.

Price drops are a complete mystery. Every season people try and work them out and constantly get it wrong. Even the price prediction sites struggle. Then there's the old "it must be wildcard transfers" cop out of course 🙂 .

Here is the fact - FPL use a secret formula. They tweak it constantly throughout the season. No FPL manager will know how price changes work in the current set up.

    How to handle Salah?

    A) Keep and play Brewster H WHU or Taylor H CRY

    C) Sell Salah for KDB, Mane or Ziyech for -4

Similar dilemma but already have Ziyech. Think KDB plays too deep on occasion for me, I also don’t like Sterling as an asset sim for City I’ll probably end up going defence next GW. I digress, and think given the bench I’d go Salah to someone!!

I think it's a good looking team, although I'd lose one of the big-hitters to fund Soucek to Grealish in midfield and upgrade PVA & Taylor to Chillwell & Cancelo..

You can only Cap one of Mane/Vardy/Bruno/KDB every week so I don't think it's worth having all from a value perspective either.

Not because of Covid, but I've actually wanted 2 free transfers for a while now. I think it would make the game much more fun/hands on. You could certainly take a few more 'one week punts'.

I used to play Fantasy MLS and that was great fun, unlimited transfers every week!!!!

It was actually more fun before that. Unlimited transfer ruined the game for me 😀

Are people actually selling Salah? If he's asymptomatic then I'd expect he comes back firing (like Mane did). Brighton and Fulham in two of the next 3 is ideal.

We can't be sure right now though. If he misses Brighton then it's Wolves in GW11. Can easily get him back for Fulham in GW12 then.

bench for one match, but can't have that many 'missed points' for more than one match
too much doubt to say he will be ready for Brighton 5 days later. Especially with all the troubles liverpool have had recently with personnel, I think they'll be extra cautious

They would have nothing to be 'extra cautious' about. He is not injured. He'll quarantine and miss one PL match, just like Mane did.

There is no way to tell that as he needs to test negative and that duration differs from person to person. It took Ronaldo 19 days to turn negative eventhough he was asymptomatic.

Yes why would u hold +12m on ur bench? Just get him back when its sure hes fine.

The problem for me is the lack of other decent captain options this week and the fact that Fernandes is the stand-out pick.

Stubbornly hanging on to him while others are moving for Bruno/KDB/Mane, etc might not be the best decision.

I did salah to Bruno last but Please help on these options either a) son to ziyech or b) delap to Watkins ?

I know a -8 sounds mental but I really think these moves might be worth it. Any thoughts?

Trent, Foden, Salah --> Cresswell, Bruno, Mane

I don't think a -8 is too big a deal this week tbh. Injuries all over the place, Salah Covid news, etc means plenty will be taking hits.

You're also giving yourself a great captaincy option with those moves.

well the -8 is worth it for having 3 starters for the next 2-4 weeks (as it stands)

I'm very adverse of taking hits and have already used my 2FT this week leaving me with the below squad. My defence is in shambles after I have had 2x Liverpool until this week. Would you WC?

    McCharty/Steer
    Robertson/Chillwell/Dallas/Saïss/Ferguson
    Fernandes/Son/Grealish/Zaha/Bissouma
    Werner/Calwert-Lewin/Bamford

£3.8M in the bank. If I don't WC, I could potentially take a hit for Saïss->Cancelo/Digne

When are you saving your WC for? I usually try to keep it as long as possible too, maybe just take a -4 and ship Ferguson to Coufal, the others still might play. The rest of the squad looks fine, many much worse off.

Absolutely no reason to hit or WC when you will field a decent 11. I would personally save the WC for GW10 and load up on City players.

Suspect most are happy to move Salah on because they're replacing him with a captaincy option i.e Bruno or KDB - I want Ziyech but have reservations on taking that hit even if Mo is out for 2 GWs.

TV almost 105 now. Need the premium picks to all start firing together

That's an impressive TV. Makes the biggest difference when you have an abundance of premium captaincy picks.

Do you think the emergence of value picks and their respective points accrued and points potential justify any player having a midfield or forward line with many premium pick currently or in the near future?

Considering this argument on WC atm as I think the budget picks such as Hamez, DCL, Bamford, Watkins, Grealish, Zaha, Ziyech have outperformed the likes of Salah, Mané, KdB, Sterling, Vardy, Werner thus far. Exceptions have been Son and Kane who has been value for their prices even.

As long as he budget picks keep firing ots advabtage those with lowers TVs but im just hoping we see somenregression from players priced low..which is what u would expect from those picks

The obvious advantage is when the dgws kick in and u can get premium dgw picks from each side but thats a long way to go

Perhaps the lack of crowds will have some bearing on a regression happening or not.

          Good point.
