Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope: Which FPL players are nearing a one-match ban?

Those who keep an eye on the Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for several Premier League players.

The respite provided by the final international break of 2020 seems like a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

The yellow card amnesty is not until after the completion of a team’s 19 league fixtures (more on that later), after which the threshold moves up from five to ten bookings.

Those Fantasy Premier League assets already sitting on three and especially four cautions still have a long way to go before they are in the clear, then.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

There is only one player who is currently a solitary yellow card away from suspension: Leicester City’s Jonny Evans (£5.5m).

The Northern Ireland international has managed to rack up four cautions in just five league appearances this season, the latest of which came in Gameweek 8.

With Caglar Soyuncu (£5.3m) a longer-term absentee and news awaited on the severity of Wesley Fofana’s (£5.0m) knee injury, the Foxes can’t afford to lose many more bodies at the heart of their defence.

Evans’ four bookings have come from just six fouls conceded, at least, so the experienced stopper is hardly flirting with danger on a regular basis.

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

While Evans is out in front on his own on four bookings, there is a baker’s dozen of Premier League players who are just a caution behind.

Most are lower-owned FPL assets and/or agricultural midfield types but there are a handful of semi-popular options within the list.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) boasts a double-digit ownership, while Hector Bellerin (£5.1m) was among the top five most-bought defenders of Gameweek 8.

Those two players sit in 19.7% and 16.4% of the top 10,000 squads respectively.

John McGinn (£5.5m) saw his ownership increase sixfold after his early-season heroics, while Mateusz Klich‘s (£5.6m) own purple patch of form and penalty-taking responsibilities have seen him become the fifth most-popular budget midfield option under £6.0m.

Of the 14 players on three or four yellow cards, Klich has committed the most fouls. Indeed, only two top-flight players have fouled the opposition on more occasions than the Pole (19).

There are no surprises to see Oriel Romeu (£4.5m) on the above table: the Southampton midfield spoiler and emergency bench fodder option has racked up over ten times as many yellow cards as he has FPL attacking returns in his Premier League career.

John Lundstram‘s (£5.1m) name appearing on the list would have been headline news in 2019/20 but given his recategorization as an FPL midfielder, uncertain future at Bramall Lane and plummeting ownership, he is but a mere footnote this season.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

As we mentioned in the introduction, the yellow card threshold is raised to ten after 19 league fixtures.

In most seasons, that would ordinarily mean after the completion of Gameweek 19 – but this is no ordinary campaign.

Aston Villa, Burnley, Manchester City and Manchester United are a game behind the other 16 top-flight clubs, with word awaited on the rearrangement of their respective Blank Gameweek 1 fixtures.

We have also yet to see how a complicated-looking January schedule pans out, with the ‘Matchweek 18’ games split into two and sandwiching Gameweek 19.

And any unexpected postponements between now and then would, of course, further affect the ’19th fixture’ cut-off point.

The threshold for ten yellow cards is after 32 league matches, which will be mid-April at the earliest.

Players collecting ten bookings before that point will serve a two-game ban.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

All should take a 5-day rest and be back here on Friday. Any formation and substitution suggestion is almost meaningless until Friday or even Saturday afternoon. You may have a rough plan but cannot and should not decide yet.

Certainly I feel that DCL's point ceiling this week could match if not exceed Bruno's. A brace for DCL isn't off the cards.

And I know that I shouldn't be drawing conclusions here but it's difficult not to be aware of Bruno's patterns of hauling away rather home. Probably a silly correlation to make.

To be devils advocate, I agree DCL is a possibly great option for cap this week as Fulham are terrible at defending. However Everton have been awful recently, you can say rodriguez was missing but then he was back and the game against Newcastle was awful. Sure rich is back but there's a small doubt that Everton are out of form, however dcl has still looked dangerous. On the other hand, everyone saying bruno likely to blank because its a home game, last year his home stats were 2goals and 5 assists in 7 starts. So no blanks.. more assists than goals, but still heavily involved. His sample of 2 or 3 home games this year doesnt show any real trend, so he is still very likely to do damage against West brom!

both are good choices but I think we need to own Bruno this week, he has a high ceiling and only owned by 25%.

I have James Rod & DCL so I feel I have the Everton game covered without captaining DCL.

I'd be a much bigger fan of the guy if he wasn't a tax dodger who goes to great lengths to avoid paying his fair share like the rest of us.

Moving to Monaco to be a tax exile. Setting up a company to rent out private jets - with him being the sole 'customer' - just so he avoids paying tax on buying an aircraft.

There's a guy who has completely lost touch with his Stevenage roots and all that this country has done for him.

    Martinez - (4.0)
    Robbo - James - Lamptey- Coufal - (4.0)
    Son - Grealish - Foden - (Salah) - (4.5)
    Kane - Werner - DCL

Logical move is to do Foden -> Jota/Barkley and bench Salah right?

I think you're best saving a transfer and benching salah. Fine team for next week. Would prefer to have 2xfers to upgrade foden. Dont think jota or barkley are good long term options, since you have grealish also. Probably consider dropping robbo or werner to fund foden > someone better. Find enough for kdb? Bruno? Or ziyech

    Werner DCL Watkins

    A: Salah > KDB
    B: Keep and bench

    GW10 Wener > Vardy
    GW11 Save
    GW12 ? (Zaha? > Ziyech?) - unsure
GW13 Vardy (mid) > KDB Bamford

You want to drop bruno when he has city (full of goals), Sheffield and Leeds? I think the simplest answer here is, make a team with salah in, bench him and keep bruno as well. Build your team around the players to keep for a season, bruno and salah are those in my opinion. Jumping between salah, bruno, kdb, sterling etc, you will just miss the points because you csnt call a "tough" fixture when these players deliver whatever the fixture

Wrong. Building your team around the players to keep for a season is wrong. You should build your team around the players to keep between wildcards or keep from second wildcard til the end. Such set-and-forgets should be the cheap ones. Swapping between big hitters is essential as you can't have them all and you can pinpoint specific fixtures for maximum upside and captaincy hauls.
But people become myopic because of the TV/ SV myth and lose their balls through fear of losing value.
Such conservative, stunted management from others, especially the denizens of FFS, allows the true elite players to nail good ranks every season.

See FFS used to be great for community spirit and the sense that we had a proper inside track.
Then posters like yourself and some others come and pollute the boards with annoying rubbish, like this casual thing.
Your comments sometimes are funny - I do actually like that type of humour. But it has to be done from a position of prestige and excellence, which you don't posess. If someone has an elite history and chooses to wind others up, then fair enough - if it's done with a bit of panache and subtelty.
You go around calling people casual and calling people out for having no top 10Ks and yet your history is dreadful. That just doesn't make sense and makes you look the flog (whatever that is). I don't get how you can't see that.

Having gks for 8.5 definitely has its merits, that .5 or 1m saving can make a difference but its still a matter of personal preference. Arguably this season, due to the fact we have so many mid and lower priced options performing really well that saving that 0.5m isn't actually making a huge difference id say. Some years however, there has been times when the premium options were absolutely on fire, and if you could squeeze in that 1 extra salah/mane/kdb etc, that 0.5m could pay huge dividends. Also add.. if you are rotating 2x 5.0m+ gas then

      I'm gunna move him on.

I was always planning a Son > Bruno transfer anyway. So may as well move on Salah instead. Then the following week I'll bring in KDB for Son.

Then it's just a case of when (not if) I bring Mo back into my team

Yeah, no doubting you can get by.

But Salah > Bruno (c) would give you a dose of double Bruno instead of whoever you are playing instead of Salah.

Sergio Ramos has now surpassed Buffon as the most capped European player with 177 caps. And that for a Spain team which, on average, has probably been the best international side over the last 15-20 years. He may not be a popular character among neutrals but it's a phenomenal achievement.

Is having Saiss, Podence, TAA, Salah, Callum Wilson, plus Dier whose fixtures turn rotten enough reason to WC? I’m beginning to think it is, and that my 2FTs can’t fix enough fires even with a -4?

    Rest is:

    McCarthy Martinez
    Balbuena Justin (Saiss TAA Dier)
    Son Grealish Bissouma (Podence Salah)
    Kane DCL (Wilson)

Yes I wish, now I know, that I’d used my 2FTs in previous weeks and started WC early to catch the risers and fallers, but I might need to change at least 3 there just to field a worthwhile team.

Issues are saiss, Taa dier and podence like you said. Wilson not so bad, fixtures change a bit soon, comparable to owning Bamford etc so would hold for now. Depends how keen you are to jump on the fixture change for City, if a wc can change your team structure to get kdb / bruno / cancelo etc then its probably a yes. But equally I'd say you can just about manage for a couple of weeks but will take a few gws to change. However.. having held a wc until now, id still think there's alot to be gained using it towards to end to build a team for the potential doubles happening I believe around gw18 for City and utd

      1. Black Knights
        • 12 Years

I reckon I’m gonna go for it mate. City, United, Villa, Burnley with the DGWs, and I reckon I’ll have 2,1,2,0/1 from them on WC anyway. So that’ll be covered. I’m looking at at least back to back -4s even now, without anything else going wrong.
