My FPL Gameweek 9 transfer plans and whether I’ll be keeping or selling Salah

Three-time top 5k finisher Az reveals his current Gameweek 9 plans in his latest Pro Pundits column.

So after my article last week, I’m back to give my thoughts about the, quite frankly, chaotic international break and what it means for my own team going forward.

I’m writing this on Tuesday evening and I currently have three “flags” in my team: Ben Chilwell (£6.0m), Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) and Tyrick Mitchell (£4.1m). This could all change in the next few days but I’m feeling quite lucky, as I know plenty of managers have the likes of Raheem Sterling (£11.5m), Marcus Rashford (£9.6m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m) and even Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) and are sweating on their fitness and availability for the weekend.

It’s a difficult time, and if you’ve made early moves, don’t beat yourself up. While it is generally advisable to wait as long as possible to gather as much information as you can, sometimes price fluctuations mean that you have to take a risk to avoid being “locked out” of the moves that you want to make.

In the October international break, I made some early moves that made me a tidy profit of £0.6m on my team value. Okay, it meant that I had to play the Wildcard the same week when issues started to arise, but I still think that it was an acceptable risk for that kind of team value. It was only the late injury to Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) that really forced my hand, and without that, I’d probably still have it in my pocket.

Those without Wildcards or even Free Hits need to factor this into their decision making, but as always, sometimes the early moves can pay off and set you up nicely for the weeks ahead. I cannot say I wouldn’t have moved early to dump the likes of Alexander-Arnold, Callum Wilson (£6.6m), Mitchell or Danny Ings (£8.3m), who we are all fairly sure aren’t going to make miraculous recoveries for the next Gameweek.

Is now the right time for some restructuring? 2

Armed with only one free transfer this week, I have shown patience over the international break. In my previous article, I talked up the upcoming potential of the likes of De Bruyne and Bruno Fernandes (£10.6m) but have yet to make an official move for either player.

Salah’s fitness status is weighing on my mind.

I am keeping Salah. Hope he won't take long. Any info when is he returning?

We need NORAD to track his movement like they do for Santa on Christmas Eve.

Support for DCL (C), very cool.

I'm interested to see what KDB's ownership will be after his 25 points come West Brom and Burnley.

    im completely lost...

    Mendy/Nyland
    James/Coufal/TAA/Mithcell/Dunne
    Salah/Zaha/Foden/Son/Burke
    DCL/Kane/Watkins

I need to get out TAA, Foden and probably Salah now but don't want to take a -8. I can't rely on bench as none are playing (nightmare)

    A) Free hit
    B) -8 and take out salah, TAA & Foden
    C) -4 and take out TAA & Salah. Hope that Foden gets some minutes
    D) -4 and take out TAA & Foden. Accept that I have one blank in my team and bench salah for next GW.
    E) other - please say if you have a better idea (Yes I've already wildcarded lol)

      D) personally - Foden is dead weight and Salah is probably only out for one game, so saves you a -4 and a transfer next week.

Respectfully disagree on Foden, plan on keeping him as part of a KDB Cancelo triple-up from GW 11

D and bring in Grealish and maybe Cancelo (to set you up for next 10 GWs)

I have a very similar front 8. I'm doing TAA and Foden to Targett and Ziyech (-4) personally

Which wildcard option do you prefer?

    A:
    Martinez, Martin
    Chilwell, Cancelo, Cresswell, Justin, Phillips
    Mane, Grealish, Bruno, Ziyech, Riedewald
    Werner, Bamford, DCL

    B:
    Martinez, Martin
    Chilwell, Cancelo, Coufal, Justin, Phillips
    Mane, Grealish, Bruno, Ziyech, Riedewald
    Vardy, Bamford, DCL

Would do Mane > Salah when he's back.

    Cheers

Umm so its basically Vardy + Coufal vs Werner + Cresswell? I would prefer Werner + Coufal + KDB (over Bruno)

yep that's it. I'd rather have kept Cresswell but only obvious way to afford Vardy is to downgrade to Coufal. I get your point on KDB and that's a transfer I'd be considering in the future, but Bruno is the man on form right now

I’m unfortunately on a free hit with many injuries, hopefully it can pay off..

    Martinez
    Digne Maguire Van Aanholt
    Rashford Fernandes Ziyech DeBruyne
    Calvert-Lewin Werner Watkins

Other options are Grealish/Vardy for DeBruyne/Watkins
    How does this look?

get maguire out your team. I think I'd want Grealish and Vardy on a FH as well.

        In the short term Watkins
I don't have him either , Grealish , will come in soon enough though. So at least get one of the two soonest , depending on your team structure,

        TAA needs to go now

Watkins short term looks better, but long term I prefer Bamford

I think Freakish is one of the best players in the game with great fixtures. Not essential but prefer him to Watkins

I wouldn't hold TAA any longer. I'm getting out as part of my first hit, to use the money in attack

I think it'll make things more interesting as people need to think outside the box a little more and have to make bigger decisions. Still naturally devolves into a line of similar action at one point for a lot (Salah to Bruno, TAA to Chilwell, etc.) but it still changes things up and those decisions then mean Salah has a lower ownership and people have to decide when and/or how to get him back in (and a good performance from Bruno can make that a more difficult decision).

          • 3 Years

Absolutely, and that’s was kinda the point I was getting to.
Anyone can change to the most “fashionable” players at anytime.
But people that have put a bit of thought in won’t need to take hits galore to achieve that.
Same with DGW’s at the end of the season, prior planning always helps imo. Winging it only gets you so far... that’s what I preach anyway, but I’m still rubbish at this game haha!

Definitely, but let's be honest a large part of FPL is luck more than anything, I have a squad with 11 players + a GK and if it sticks that way (which I think it should as I don't think I have any playing tonight, excepting possible covid cases appearing) I should be good to roll my FT as I've got a good few players I want but I'm not sure who I'm willing to let go of, and patience in general has done me well this season with most players that didn't kick on immediately. Tables and leagues will definitely be shaken up over the next few weeks that's for sure, this is the first year in a while where I'm making a big effort to do well and weirdly enough that actually means with the extra planning and keeping an open mind I'm actually making less transfers than usual and looking at the longer game more often, but I've been clinging around just behind the top few of my leagues so I'm hoping these few weeks might help me catch up like yourself!

It's an opportunity to overcome the more-fortunate people from the early season:

        My terrible sins were:

        (1) I had Aubameyang! and Captained Once
        (2) I had TAA! and Captained Once
        (3) I had Werner not King Kane to start the season!
        (4) I sold Son when Mourinho said he was injured for "several weeks"
        (5) I once owned Martial, Greenwood, Saiss, Dier, Ramsdale and Eagan

For a brief moment, I ranked about 4.0M! Now much better.

I don’t think owning Auba or TAA are terrible sins.
But yeah, I fell into the Werner trap at the start even after saying it was madness to pick an unproven foreign striker.

Son to Bruno GW2 will haunt me for the rest of my life... it’s even in the back of my head when thinking about shipping son this week!

Thoughts on my current team, 2FTs and 0.4 itb

Will hold Salah if he’s just out for one game. Planning on doing downgrading TAA to then allow Son to Sterling or KDB for the following GW

      Ryan
      TAA, dier, kwp, Taylor, Ferguson
      Salah, Bruno, son, grealish, Bissouma
      Dcl, Werner, adams

      Sound good? Or other priorities?

Personally I see them as very different options.

Vardy - proven, reliable goalscorer on pens. Not many other big hitting strikers/Kane placeholders.

Barnes - unreliable finisher, no set pieces, others could take his place, much better options at his price.

        Just my opinion

I can see that point, depends on your squad.

If you don't have Grealish or possibly Ziyech I'd move on. And if you can turn him into a KDB or Bruno then even more so

Doesn't really impact whether he'll be able to play this weekend, of course, but will mean this rumbles into next GW. I'm guessing there will still be a couple of opportunities for Salah to return a positive test next week, by which time he'll have completed his 10 day isolation period. I'm benching and hoping for a positive update next week.

Think earlier reports suggested that he'd have another swab within 4/5 days of previous positive test. So could mean that he gets tested again Monday and then sometime later in the week - hopefully before the Saturday!

Median time of getting a negative RT-PCR test from the day of onset of symptoms (mild symptoms in this case probably starting on 12th or 13th Nov) is around 7-10 days. So I'd say he will have around 50% chance of getting a negative result on 21st Nov. There is no use of getting repeated tests every alternate day.
