Football Index: Fixture congestion means more In-Play Dividend possibilities

Sponsored by Football Index

The final international break of the year is almost done and normality can return – or what passes for ‘normality’ in this unpredictable 2020/21 campaign, anyway.

There’s certainly going to be no let-up in the madness of it all over the next month and a bit, with many clubs in action twice a week right the way through until the New Year.

But how will that affect your Football Index chances? Potentially rather well, as it happens.

For those that don’t know, Football Index (FI) is a kind of stock market where people use real money to bet on football.

You buy shares in individual players whose value can rise or fall depending on their performance both on and off the field.

I’m actively using FI this season with more than a nod to Fantasy Premier League (FPL), seeing which aspects of each game marry up, and which don’t.

Whatever type of football game you might currently be playing, this time of the year is always a busy one. But in keeping with the, let’s just say, different nature of this season, you’d need an ‘insanely’ in front of that ‘busy’ to adequately describe things from now until the start of 2021.

This could be a good time to place a bet in Football Index, then, with In-Play Dividends (IPDs) awarded for goals, assists and clean sheets for the first 30 days that you own a share in a player.

Unlike FPL, Football Index managers can earn performance dividends from European competitions, meaning the three rounds of UEFA Champions League and Europa League fixtures still to be played between now and early December could bring in extra earnings while also boosting share price values.

So there’s plenty of opportunity to find some good earners from the seven Premier League clubs who are playing on the continent over the next few weeks: these sides will, depending on the TV schedule, face up to nine fixtures in the 30 days from Gameweek 9 inclusive.

Domestically, the Manchester teams have decent schedules over the next few weeks, although they do face each other in Gameweek 12.

City’s home matches look particularly inviting, with Burnley, Fulham, West Brom and Newcastle to come before the year’s end.

Ferran Torres (£1.56) has been used sparingly by Pep Guardiola since his summer move, but he announced himself to many with a hat-trick for Spain against Germany this week.

Someone with even fewer Premier League minutes (109 v Torres’ 239) is Sergio Aguero (£1.38).

The striker seems to be recovering well from a hamstring injury picked up at West Ham last month and although Guardiola will have to manage his pitch-time when he returns, his proven pedigree and relative freshness could mean he has a big role to play over the festive fixture pile-up.

Over at United, their winless start to the league season at home will take some of the shine off an otherwise solid schedule.

If you’ve got the money, the ever-reliable Bruno Fernandes (£6.63) is expensive, but he’s started every league match (and two of three Champions League games) this campaign and has five goals and three assists to his name domestically.

And if you want fresher blood, Alex Telles (£1.71) seems to have put his COVID-19 issues behind him and could finally get a good run in the side with Luke Shaw currently out with a hamstring injury.

Another under-used player has been Chelsea midfielder Hakim Ziyech (£3.00).

He’s now fit and firing, with a goal and three assists from his first two league starts for the Blues, and looks under-priced.

As for the final member of the Champions League contingent, Liverpool, their defensive crisis might tempt a trade for centre-half Nathaniel Phillips (£0.52), although the Reds have managed just one clean sheet in the league all season.

Instead, it could be a case of turning misfortune – the positive COVID test involving Mohamed Salah (£3.11) – into success.

The Egyptian is currently in self-isolation, meaning he won’t be available for the Reds in the short-term.

He is, however, not showing any symptoms, which suggests he’ll be fit and ready to play once he’s clear of the virus.

Salah is having an excellent season, with eight goals in the league already. An enforced lay-off could well mean he’ll be fresh and in-form just when opponents are in desperate need of a rest.

Keep an eye on Jurgen Klopp’s virtual media gatherings, then, for word on the Egyptian’s return – Salah has been a prolific performer over the festive period in the last few years and he could rack up plenty of goals and assists in a multi-game, 30-day IPD window.

He’s also bound to get plenty of coverage in the press as his recovery is monitored, which could lead to some Media Dividends.

I know this has been discussed for a while now, but good news is that Salah will most likely be back for Brighton so missing 1 game is not too bad.

His 10-day quarantine period began on Friday last week and as soon as he returns a negative test, as long as it falls outside of said 10 days, he is okay to return and resume training with the squad. Last Friday was the 13th, so if he returns a negative on the 23rd he is fine to come back since he has served his 10-day quarantine. All good.

That doesn't mean he'll test negative though.

Ronaldo tested positive 18 times in 13 days. He was out from Oct 13-30. And then there's match fitness to consider. I don't think we can count on Salah being back for GW 10 at all.

There are no guarantees, but most people I believe are fine within 10 days, hence the 10-day quarantine. Nothing is certain, but then again FPL is a game based on assumptions and stats. Statistically, he should be back. Don't want to tempt fate too much though

He is out for the Brighton game as he tested positive again this Wednesday so the clock re-sets. So he can’t play or train again until at least the 29th of Nov. He needs a negative test to leave isolation as well.

why does the clock reset after a positive test? if you keep testing him every single day, there will be a day when he is positive and the next test would be negative. i dont get why does he need to stay in Egypt for 9 more days after that?
imo if he tests negative and was first positive 10 days or more ago, he should be allowed to travel

The only headline I can find so far that says he misses 2 league games is from The Sun, which, I'm not making a value judgment on their accuracy, and it concerns me. One game is a best case scenario. Just because he's fit, doesn't mean he will shift the virus within days. I'm leaning towards getting Bruno in for him, especially as my other captain candidates are DCL and Grealish, which are ok but not as good a Bruno.

Would you make the moves for -4?

Would captain KDB this week instead of Mane or Rashford.

Frustrates me that the official FPL twitter page is always tweeting their millions of followers which players to captain or buy. Sometimes low ownership differentials that I've had my eye on, are suddenly owned by the masses due to this.

I'm sure it never used to be like this.

I don't really get the thinking of most on Bruno Fernandes. Even people thinking of buying him this week seem to be thinking of selling him soon after. He has been a great FPL option from the moment he joined the league and I'm sure he was held in high regard from owners last season. My question is what's changed? Is it his price? The other options available? He seems to be as reliable as he's always been and despite what you think of Utd he appears to be a great FPL option.

FYI, I'm not a Utd fan but I have owned Fernandes since GW2, very happy for doing so too! 🙂

United have looked poor overall and paying premium for a player that isn't from City, Pool or Spurs feels a bit speculative.

I agree with this although Bruno's ability to score points is almost independent of the team's performances which makes him a good FPL asset generally regardless of team form.

However I don't buy the idea of getting him now with the plan to ditch him again after only 2-3 weeks - at that price you stick for longer otherwise it's pointless.

Thing is, this week he is a captaincy option when other options are meh and if Salah is back for Fulham and you can get him then that makes sense.

I agree on Utd being less impressive this season but Fernandes still seems to be the main man when they do get anything. I think he's likely be up there with the likes of Salah, Mane, KDB, Kane etc. Possibly even outscore them.

Bumping spurs into the 'worth paying premium for' based on a 8 games? Makes it even more odd you'd ignore a much more extended run of premium returns. Stop listening to your feelings and just do the maths, the sample size is big enough to cover rain or shine

Actually... Bruno hasn't played that many top 6 sides. He came into United's team when they were already through most of the tough games. Go look at the PL games yourself. It's not as clear cut as you make it seem.

I'm getting him in for a hit this GW and intend on keeping him for the long haul. Seems a reliable captain option at a time when these have been very thin on the ground for me this season.

Yeah bit annoying this in a weird way. Owning him this season and getting his decent returns whilst many were ignoring made him a bit of a differential. Now the Salah injury means he will be much more owned.

Yeah I guess this sort of thing is the answer for most. It's not that he's a bad option, he''s just that one too many to fit in. Be interesting to see in another few game weeks how he's points return compares to the other premiums.

Agreed. Don't understand all these transfer plans flying about, Salah out Bruno in, Bruno out KDB in, etc etc. Why bring him in and then ship him, for me the point is to keep him for the season now. Last season, albiet he had less than half a season, but he had the best pts per game of anybody. KDB 2nd, very impressive considering he played all season. Now most years the highest pts per game is roughly between 7-8. Nobody can consistently hit over 8 for an entire season. Bruno came in last season and avged 8.5, and this season so far 7.5. Roughly this is about 8.1 avg over 21 games, thats quite a good sample size and an incredibly good average pts. This may drop a bit because not even Salah can reach 8 over a season, but it shows that he is up there as one of the best assets in the game. All the top scoring players currently, Kane, Son etc, are averaging around 10 or 11 points per game, and like I mentioned, noone in the last couple of seasons has gone anywhere near that average for a whole season so its not sustainable for me.

Anyways point being, bring in Bruno, and keep Bruno, should be the plan. Forget fixtures, thats not the point. If you had flip flopped with KDB last season in and out of your team you'd have been totally screwed missing hauls. You can't predict the hauls so the best bet is keep a player for a long period and then see.

Last year it only required 2359 points total (62.1 per week). I expect it will be a bit higher this year with more DGWs.

      McCarthy (Button)
      Lamptey-Chillwell-Semedo-KWP (Ferguson)
      Ziyech-Bruno (C)-Rodriguez (Bissouma, Salah)
      Wilson*-Kane-Adams

Already on a -4 and less faith that Wilson is fit for this weekend.

1- Move Salah or Wilson for -8?
      2- WC?
      3- Hold tight?

      Any thoughts appreciated.

Tough call. I am only a McCarthy owner. So I am probably bias, but I just dont trust Burnley against many sides this season, so would probably go McCarthy, even though they have the tougher fixture.

Ziyech Grealish DCL captain dilemma is burning me.
      DCL has the sure goal
Ziyech has the sure assists(maybe 2)
Grealish has blank or haul and I'm currently on him

DCL the best option. Chelsea game against newcastle is not the given everyone thinks it is - Newcastle aren't great but are a bit of a bogey team for chelsea, theyve won 2 out of the last 5, and all the last 5 games have been low scoring games, 1-0, 2-1, never more than 2 goals. Grealish also another great option tbh, only slight is brighton are a weird enigma, having statistically the 2nd best xGC, but clearly letting in a lot of goals. I would stick with the most obvious and safest feeling option, Fulham are shocking at defending - Everton have Rich and James back, Fulham have concede the most headed chances in the league, who loves headers? DCL.. Simples 🙂

Great thinking. I believe the same thing for NewChe. If Everton scores 3 then it will be an amazing captain choice but I'm still not sure because if Villa is in forn Vs Brighton then they can manage score 2-3 and Grealish scored in both games Vs BHA last season and it was only the only team against who he got 2 returns in one game. So I'm still unsure about whether I shouldn't captain Grealish but DCL is imo the safest of all...

Brighton concedes 1 goal per 2 shots but the problem is that they play in a way that they don't concede lots of shots. Villa though likes shooting a lot so it's a higher risk for a higher reward if Villa is on top of their form

Peeps, do I take a -4 to do Ferguson to Coufal? Never been a big fan of taking hits, let alone for defenders, but I feel like this one in particular would give me a decent bench and covers any future benchings of Cancelo.

      Martinez
Chilwell - Cancelo - Lamptey (Mitchell - Ferguson*)
      Son - Hamez - Grealish(C) - Bowen (Salah)
      Kane - DCL - Brewster

Other transfer this week was TAA - Cancelo.

      Cheers!

I'd take a hit to remove Salah for KdB. You'll want KdB next week anyway and you put most of your money on the field. Salah can come back in GW12.

Yes, KDB was going to be my transfer next week. Always had it in my head that if Salah was out for more than 1, then KDB comes in this week instead. Can always do Son > Salah next week instead if Salah is indeed back. I may bite the bullet on the value loss and do get KDB for Salah this week. Cheers

      Hi guys
      Thoughts on this?

      Pre wildcard team:
      McCarthy / Steer
      Chilwell - Ayling - KWP - Justin - Mitchell
      Bowen - Son - Salah. - Fernandes - Biisouma

      Wildcard team:
      McCarthy / Forster
Chilwell - Cancelo - Justin - Neco Williams - Targett
      Grealish - Ziyech - Mane - KDB - Fernandes
      DCL - Brewster - Watkins

      Can’t decide on:
      A) Mane & Brewster
      B) Jota & Vardy

A - will allow me to get Salah for Mane when Salah returns.
B - Jota and Vardy could haul big but would leave me with 8 attackers. Benching nightmare

Between Dallas and Ayling. Ayling assist potential, Dallas goal potential. I would pick Dallas personally, like a cheeky goal from a defender. The leeds defence is quite off-putting though, very bad stats wise but maybe they just concede a lot of chances but some games blow a team away 3-0.

Either full back, both pretty attacking. Ayling in the box for corners possibly edges it for me.

Highly original question - rest of midfield is Ziyech, Mane, Hamez, Podence

      1. Keep Salah
      2. Sell for Bruno (-4)
      3. Sell for KDB (-4)
      4. Sell for Grealish (means a -8 getting rid of Steer as have Watkins/Martinez)
      5. Salah & Jimenez to Bruno & Vardy (-8)
