International Football

How many minutes did FPL assets play over the international break?

The final international break of 2020 has come to an end, with a number of Premier League clubs counting the cost of their players’ involvement with their respective countries.

Even by usual standards, we’ve seen a higher-than-average number of Fantasy Premier League flags appearing over the last fortnight thanks to a combination of injury and illness.

Our Team News tab and our press conference round-up (in both article and video form) will cover everything on the fitness front but it is fatigue we’re focusing more on in this article as we look at how many minutes each FPL asset clocked up while on international duty.

Some nations crammed in a triple-header of games over the last fortnight, with a handful of top-flight players taking part in all three of their respective country’s matches.

As well as on-field exertions, long-haul flights back from further afield may also be a consideration ahead of Gameweek 9.

MOST MINUTES PLAYED

To the best of our knowledge, these were the players who racked up the most minutes over the international break:

FURTHEST TRAVELLED AND LATEST RETURNEES

Many of the matches that took place over the international break, including the friendlies involving the USA, Mexico and South Korea, were staged in Europe.

There were a number of World Cup qualifiers held in South America, however, so the likes of James Rodriguez (£7.9m), Richarlison (£7.8m), Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) and Alex Telles (£5.5m) have had to endure long-haul flights back from their respective countries after being in action late on Tuesday or in the early hours of Wednesday morning (UK time).

Thiago Silva (£5.5m), indeed, looks set to miss Gameweek 9 as a result of his late return.

The South American countries weren’t the last ones in action, however, with a host of European teams – including England, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands – contesting UEFA Nations League games as late as Wednesday evening.

Players such as Sadio Mane (£12.1m), Hakim Ziyech (£8.2m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) have all been in African Cup of Nations qualifying duty in their home continent, meanwhile, although all those games were wrapped up by Tuesday afternoon at the latest.

The dates for all of the international games in November are available here.

CLUB-BY-CLUB ROUND-UP

The team-by-team guide below breaks down the minutes that each player has played per international match over the last week or so, with a total given at the end.

Any players with an asterisk next to their names withdrew from their countries’ squads either midway through the international break or picked up an injury at the back-end of it.

As mentioned earlier, we’ll have further details on any lingering fitness concerns in our pre-Gameweek 9 team news round-up on Friday.

I don’t think I would lose son (who’s fit for a -4) would rather sell Salah (who can get back in again when fit)

I agree. Are leicester defensively sound? They too are hit with injuries. No soyuncu, ndidi, and with Fofana a doubt. I think pool could do well.

I see people are buying Mane with one of the arguments being he has already had Covid19.
But out of those who have so far contracted Covid19, how many have actually performed well after recovering?

He's fine to pick up. He's not my first choice Mo replacement (KdB is) but I would pick him up 2nd if I already owned KdB.

He's scored and looked sharp since coming back. My bigger concern is that Mane doesn't play better with Salah out.

Depends on the effect the virus actually had on the person's lungs. If asymptomatic, there's a good chance it was just like the flu, or better. It doesn't affect everybody equally

Potentially yes, but City haven't been free scoring with or without Jesus in the side. I think Aguero will still be first choice starter, bang in a 60 minute hattrick then get rested. And that's fine with me.

    Aaaaaand another -8! Kane + Salah + Son > DCL + JRod + KDB

    Mart
    Chilwell Cancelo Coufal
    (C) Bruno KDB Ziyech JRod Jack
    DCL Bam

    Steer Kilman Vest Brewster

Got funds for Kilman to Dias GW10, then JRod to Salah GW12 (or earlier, if pushed). Steer to another 4.0 GK will happen with a future spare FT, since Heaton's almost back to displace him as the Mart backup

So many captaincy options... Son was my only blank last GW in the whole XI, and he was my captain. I'm not even bothered anymore. Set it on Bruno since the deadline, and I'll leave it there unless there's news

Son to KDB isn't worth it? I feel it is, and I know that might just be me. Rolling with it

    1. puhd

Good moves, but a -8 to get rod of Kane and Son is a little hard to swallow!

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

Looking at fixtures and sustainable performance data over previous points. I sold DCL in GW7 with a plan to get him back GW9. He didn't harm me, even with a late winner in one game and a fluke assist in the other. It's how I play, so it's easier for me

Every Spurs explosion has come with a caveat: S'oton suicide line, Martial red, West Ham's 20-minute absence. They've looked like normal premiums in other games, and I know I can sell normal premiums who have their type of upcoming fixture run (opponent defence stats, not whether Mou will pull out a win or not)... For premiums with clearly better runs... For a hit

    2. thegaffer82
      • 12 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

Nah. A -8 to remove 2 players who are in form. And, removing Salah as part of that when you are going to bring him back. Don't sound like great moves to me.

But, not as bad as your plan to remove your 4.0mil non-playing GK for another 4.0mil non-playing GK in the future. Transfers are way too precious to waste one on that.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

Salah, Covid-19 +: Leicester, Brighton, Wolves. Switched him to JRod: Fulham, Leeds, Burnley. After which I'll switch back to Salah

Son: City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Palace, Liverpool, Leicester, Wolves. Switched him to KDB: Spurs, Burnley, Fulham, Man U, West Brom, S'oton, Newcastle, and a DGW soon after

Kane: Son's fixtures. Switched him to DCL... I don't even need to explain this

I don't believe that past points correctly predict future points, especially due to the anomalies in each Spurs explosion. I got Son and Kane because I thought they could carry that ruthlessness over to their easier games, but they couldn't. This was enough proof to me that what you're seeing as "form" is an accumulation of anomalies in each of those games. Remove the unsustainable factors, and Spurs premiums have behaved like other premiums this season... Making it very easy for me to switch to players with better games

Also, I have no fear of selling an unavailable player for someone who has three better fixtures coming up. Every FPL asset is replaceable, even by someone much cheaper, if all you want is points

      2. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years

Steer to another 4.0 GK with a SPARE FT in the future. Since it's not obvious enough, I'll state it: selling Steer when Heaton is back will free up a useful third Villa player slot, since Steer loses his utility in my squad as a cheap backup keeper guaranteed to come in for my main keeper, Martinez. The switch would be to enable a 3rd Villa asset elsewhere in the team if needed, like Targett to replace Vest by GW13

          Also consider mid-term

Look at Kane/Son fixtures 28th Dec, 2nd Jan (100% Kane (C) essential, then next two game weeks.

7 transfers between now and then. Removing Kane and Son and replacing them takes about 75% of your FTs between now and then.

IMO there are just far better rotations, bigger fires to fight, players with no value locked into them etc

I honestly don't think it's worth tying up almost all my moves between now and Christmas (or taking hits) on two players who will very likely return just at average levels

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 5 Years
            3 years, 4 months ago

GW16? Transfers around then will be focused on the GW19 DGW, making Spurs less essential than you're implying

Also, see how Spurs have performed in their easier fixtures this season. They didn't explode against Newcastle, Brighton, Burnley or West Brom. West Ham and S'oton were due to clear anomalies

I'm seeing beyond just the 20 pointers. They aren't the assets that their current points make them out to be. I can see that, and I know I might be the only one who sees that, and I've decided based on that assessment

Nowhere else in my squad needs any form of upgrade or change, except second GK. It's right here in the post

          2. Ze_Austin
            • 5 Years
            3 years, 4 months ago

Note that at no point have I stated nor implied that Spurs would blank. I just don't see them exploding with the regularity that has brought them to their current point tallies, because I don't see those anomalies PREDICTABLY repeating themselves in fixtures against tough defences. Will Spurs force someone to play S'oton's highline? Will Spurs force another red card in the first half? Will Spurs force another team to switch off for the first 20 minutes? I don't see those scenarios repeating against the good defences they're about to face for 7 GWs, so I now see them as premiums taking up the budget I can spend on other premiums with better fixtures in those 7 GWs. This is why I made the switch

            1. Pacer.

I dunno. You seen to be trying too hard here to wrap reasons around your decisions. They're apparently struggling to break down teams, but also don't keep them in 'tough' fixtures against expansive teams. Their scores were anomolies that won't happen again, but let's project all performed that fit a narrative of underperforming etc. Ultimately, I don't really have any confidence in anyone's predictions about where this is going for them. So I'm going to keep them as they are quality, both essentially and very heavily involved in everything Spurs do. But if you're kicking your heels for what to do with your transfers then fair enough. For me, I'll hokey cokey KdB and Salah for their great fixture and the GW12 captaincy.

Expect rubbish teams to be depleted and exhausted then (Christmas and after) rather than now. DGW or not expect an absolutely ludicrous shift back to Kane and EO captaincy during that period if players remain fit.

              1. Ze_Austin
                • 5 Years
                3 years, 4 months ago

I said I don't see the anomalies that happened in those three games repeating themselves in any game. They have not exploded in any game without an anomaly, against tough teams (Everton GW1) or easy teams (Newcastle, Brighton, Burnley and West Brom). The anomalies have happened in one tough game (Martial's red) and two "easy" games (West Ham's 20 minutes and S'oton's high line)

When playing any level of difficulty of fixture without an unexpected unpredictable event happening, Spurs players have performed like normal premium players, or sometimes worse

So I choose to view them as normal premium players, and I've switched them to the premiums who have a higher chance of predictable explosive returns in their easier games

And yes, their explosive scores were anomalies that were unlikely to happen even when they happened, and haven't repeated themselves since then: S'oton has performed better in defence since then (remember when Leicester thumped them last season? Didn't repeat); West Ham has stayed focused even when playing Liverpool; Man U hasn't gotten another red card

If none of this sounds logical, then I guess there's no way to show you. I'm not trying to tell you why you should do what I did. I'm explaining my logic, which you've somehow interpreted as wrapping reasons around a decision, rather than discussing the reasons

Do you believe those three games didn't involve any anomalies?

Do you think Spurs have impressed in every match without those anomalies?

Do you see those unpredictable anomalies repeating themselves in the future games?

I said I bought Spurs premiums because I thought they could carry over that ruthlessness of the abnormal games into easier games where they were expected to get more chances, especially against a team like Brighton that plays an open game (so, not only against parked buses), but they didn't impress. Not blanks and woeful performances, but... Normal

                Normal premiums

That's my issue with them. Normal premiums vs other normal premiums who have better fixtures

GW16 is far away, and Kane or Son or both can be gotten with 2FTs or -4. I won't keep a player from GWs 9 to 15 because I want him by GW16

We're injured/unavailable all over the pitch: defensive talismans, creative talismans, goal threat talismans

We're decimated, and it's a fact. Klopp will squeeze out wins and might thump a team or two, but this isn't City that had been rotating players forever. This is a team of talismans who aren't available for now

      1. waltzingmatildas

I don't know. Klopp lost the Champions League - came back and won it the next year. Lost the league and came back and won it convincingly the next year.
I think this might be where he thrives - siege mentality and all. But we'll see I guess.

Really think there is something approaching a bus parking coming. Pool cannot go toe to toe with this Leicester team as they could be blown away within 20 minutes. That ALOMST happened last year, before it swung and you completely took them apart. No way you'll do that with this team. Respect will be shown. Maybe Mane will return, but it won't be rock and roll football
