International Football

How many minutes did FPL assets play over the international break?

The final international break of 2020 has come to an end, with a number of Premier League clubs counting the cost of their players’ involvement with their respective countries.

Even by usual standards, we’ve seen a higher-than-average number of Fantasy Premier League flags appearing over the last fortnight thanks to a combination of injury and illness.

Our Team News tab and our press conference round-up (in both article and video form) will cover everything on the fitness front but it is fatigue we’re focusing more on in this article as we look at how many minutes each FPL asset clocked up while on international duty.

Some nations crammed in a triple-header of games over the last fortnight, with a handful of top-flight players taking part in all three of their respective country’s matches.

As well as on-field exertions, long-haul flights back from further afield may also be a consideration ahead of Gameweek 9.

MOST MINUTES PLAYED

To the best of our knowledge, these were the players who racked up the most minutes over the international break:

FURTHEST TRAVELLED AND LATEST RETURNEES

Many of the matches that took place over the international break, including the friendlies involving the USA, Mexico and South Korea, were staged in Europe.

There were a number of World Cup qualifiers held in South America, however, so the likes of James Rodriguez (£7.9m), Richarlison (£7.8m), Roberto Firmino (£9.2m) and Alex Telles (£5.5m) have had to endure long-haul flights back from their respective countries after being in action late on Tuesday or in the early hours of Wednesday morning (UK time).

Thiago Silva (£5.5m), indeed, looks set to miss Gameweek 9 as a result of his late return.

The South American countries weren’t the last ones in action, however, with a host of European teams – including England, Scotland, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands – contesting UEFA Nations League games as late as Wednesday evening.

Players such as Sadio Mane (£12.1m), Hakim Ziyech (£8.2m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.2m) have all been in African Cup of Nations qualifying duty in their home continent, meanwhile, although all those games were wrapped up by Tuesday afternoon at the latest.

The dates for all of the international games in November are available here.

CLUB-BY-CLUB ROUND-UP

The team-by-team guide below breaks down the minutes that each player has played per international match over the last week or so, with a total given at the end.

Any players with an asterisk next to their names withdrew from their countries’ squads either midway through the international break or picked up an injury at the back-end of it.

As mentioned earlier, we’ll have further details on any lingering fitness concerns in our pre-Gameweek 9 team news round-up on Friday.

      B) because of Saiss losing his spot (to Cancelo)

      C) is a luxury transfer and could easily backfire in any given GW.

      A) is a solid move if the rest of your DF is fine (but obviously you have Saiss so it isn't)

    A) Salah -> Grealish
    B) Salah-> KDB

the other will come in regardless next week. I have son, kane and sterling so will be highly leveraged in the spurs city game if I bring in KDB if that makes a difference

    Help with this mess

    Martinez McCarthy
    Robertson Dallas Lamptey Taylor Mitchell
    Salah Son Auba Costa Phillips
    Kane DCL Davis

Thinking Salah to Rodriguez then Son > KDB next week.

Or would you do something different or more for -points

Salah to Bruno this week with captain. Wait and see, maybe kane to vardy the next. Son more likely to do well with spurs likely to counter attack

      Would completely revitalise your miss

No Chelsea cover so would do Salah > Ziyech
Would also do Auba>Bruno for a minus 4 as arsenal don't look like scoring goals

      Then son> KDB next week

Can anyone explain the maths behind why Salah would miss the Brighton game? (Assuming he get's a negative result next week).

hmm and Saturday 28th is the 10th day. Throw in limited training and it's unclear when he'll leave Egypt and it does seem increasingly like he's out.

This just feels like the Son 'injury' again, where i waited and waited then changed at the last minute and he goes crazy!

No it's from date of first positive test (if symptomatic) or date of first symptoms. Egyptian FA appeared to announce Salah tested positive last Friday (although I guess they could've known sooner) so 10 days should be up by Nov 23rd. Salah would still have to record a negative test before returning to training though.

Yep and in a medically equipped flight apparently, so this doesn't impact quarantine rules. I think he'll almost certainly miss Leicester game given the timeline outlined above, but I'm guessing Liverpool are pushing to have him back for Atalanta (in theory his 10 days of self-isolation should be up by then so he has an outside chance of making that game). Even if he does miss out on Atalanta then I'm cautiously optimistic about him being back for Brighton. I'm not transferring him out anyway.

next to zero chance he's ready for atalanta. the fact that brighton is only 5 days after Leicester game is a HUGE doubt without a current negative test

Yeah I've said it is an outside chance of him making that game. More confident for Brighton.

Yes this^. Many people mis-intepreting the rules, but its 10 days from the first positive test. So long as he tests negative before Monday, he can be cleared for training Tuesday and would make the brighton game.

I simply dont like the uncertainty. 100% out this week and looking 70-30 for next week. I am chasing in my ML, so easier to transfer him out and bring in points for this weekend and wait and see. Plus avoid price drops and price increase over the coming days.

I'd maybe wait for Klopp's press conference later then, as you might get a firmer idea of whether he's out or not. To add context to my decision I've already taken a -4 this week (Kane -> Watkins; Podence -> Bruno) so I'm not keen on taking a -8 to ship him out.

A Mccarthy (0.3 cheaper, back up in Forster in case injury/covid, mixed fixtures, can get Targett for villa defensive cover)

Which of these WC teams do you prefer? I am currently on A.

        A)
        McCarthy - 4m
        Justin - Targett - James - Dias - Coufal
        KdB - Bruno - Zaha* - Grealish - Bissouma
        DCL* - Kane - Bamford
+ 1,7 ITB (an easier way to Bruno -> Salah when fit again)

        B)
        McCarthy - 4m
        Justin - Targett - James - Dias - Coufal
        KdB - Bruno - Jota* - Grealish - Bissouma
        Vardy* - Kane - Bamford
+ 0,2 ITB (would probably do Vardy + Bruno out to get Salah back in after two GW's)

        Bottomed

I’m leaning towards saving WC this week and doing it the week after. Thoughts?

        McCarthy Steer

        TAA Robbo Chilwell Justin Mitchell

        Salah Son Grealish Soucek Bissouma

        Kane DCL Mitrovic

Maybe just go Salah to Bruno with one free transfer or would you WC now?

Should've decided on WC earlier. Could have built some price rises.

I'd do that move of Salah > Bruno (c) and then immediately hit WC next week.

Bit hindsighty? I don't think that team necessarily needed a WC when this IB began & waiting is the right play this season. Prices be damned.

No you're right. But my point is that when you WC you should WC at the start of the week instead of panic hitting it late on.

I think it's better for his team to just make the FT and then hit the button next week.

Yeah course that's ideal to catch those prices but sometimes you're weighing up a possible -4/-8 for example vs hitting the button, and need information to help decide.

Personally I have a potential WC team that I'll either do later on after pressers, or just push ahead with my -8 over two weeks.

Southampton seem to be improving in defence so I think get yourself a piece of that with KWP.

Coufal best value so I think go with him, and probably Lamptey as well.

Leeds defence is better than they've shown recently though, and Phillips back will help them a lot... so Ayling or Dallas deserve consideration.

        Martinez/Steer
        Chilwell Saiss Taylor Ayling Mitchell
        Salah* Son Grealish Podence Anguissa
        Werner DCL Kane

Options i'm thinking of are Salah + Podence + Kane for a -4:
        a) Bruno + KDB + Bamford (leaves me with 2 mil in the bank with which I can do Werner to Vardy next week or get in Salah in 2-3 GWs)
        b) KDB + JRod + Vardy

Got four transfers planned over the next two gameweeks for a total -8. Only taken one hit so far this season and it seems like the right time to jump off Spurs so I’m planning Son and Kane to Grealish and Vardy this week and Foden and Jimenez to De Bruyne and Bamford next week. Seem reasonable?
