Top 10k FPL managers refuse to ditch Kane and Son double-up for Gameweek 9

The top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have largely kept faith with Tottenham Hotspur despite their recent fixture-swing.

And it looks as if they have already been vindicated in that decision.

65% of these managers held onto the attacking double-up of Harry Kane (£11.0m) and Son Heung-min (£9.5m) for a tricky meeting with Manchester City, each one of them registering an attacking return.

Specifically, 86.7% of this rank bracket took Kane into Gameweek 8, his ownership at that level shrinking only as low as 85.4% for Saturday’s visit of the Citizens to north London.

Counting his yellow card, Kane scored four points thanks to his assist for Giovani Lo Celso‘s (£6.9m) second-half finish, extending his run without a blank to eight matches.

And, despite the difficulty of this match on paper, 26.2% of the top 10k still trusted Kane with the captaincy. Only Bruno Fernandes (£10.7m), backed by 28.3%, convinced more managers in that bracket to captain him than the Spurs man.

That ensured Kane still wields significant power in the top 10k, offering effective ownership at that level of 111.4%, the most of any player.

With Fernandes, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m) and Hakim Ziyech (£8.2m) enticing Fantasy managers in midfield, it is unsurprising that Son Heung-min (£9.5m) suffered a higher loss of owners in the top 10k.

The South Korean boasted 87.1% ownership at this level for Gameweek 8, which dropped to 74.1% for Gameweek 9.

However, the majority of his backers kept faith in Son, despite the Manchester City fixture, as he remains the most popular midfielder in the top 10k.

These managers were richly rewarded at the first hurdle, as Son scored 10 points in Gameweek 9, finding the net, keeping a clean sheet and earning two bonus.

Courtesy of Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.3m) enforced absence, Fernandes bursts into the template for Gameweek 9, already selected by 48.9% of the top 10k.

He has already racked up significant sway at this level, considering that he was the most captained by top 10k managers for Gameweek 9. That made for effective ownership of 77.2%, the second-highest of any FPL player.

An 11-point score for Gameweek 9 means Fernandes has already made an impact on the upper echelons of the Fantasy rankings.

With Liverpool defenders falling even further by the wayside this season, it is no shock to see the majority of re-modelling in the top 10k came at the back for Gameweek 9.

Chilwell, Werner start for Chelsea as Wilson fails to make Newcastle squad

Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) remains the most-popular defender in the top 10k although his ownership at this level swelled considerably from 34.6% to 49.1%.

Romain Saïss (£5.2m) has left the top-five defenders among top 10k managers, replaced as the third-most-popular by Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.6m).

Meanwhile, even Kurt Zouma (£5.4m) has dropped out of the top five, Max Kilman (£4.3m) finally creeping in, sat in 23.9% of top 10k teams.

Sunday’s meeting between Fulham and Everton at Craven Cottage has boosted the Fantasy potential of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.8m).

His top 10k ownership has increased by 8.4 percentage points over the international break while he arrived in Gameweek 9 as the third-most-popular captain option at this level (12.4%).

The number of managers in the top 10k who are yet to deploy a chip continues to get smaller.

After the Gameweek 9 deadline, just 28.6% of these have kept their entire complement intact, while 45% have now used at least one chip.

As you can see, the Wildcard was the most popular of those for Gameweek, used by 6.9% of the top 10k.

Interestingly, we see the continued commitment to Spurs players even here, with Kane kept by 59% of top 10k Wildcards and 41.7% of such managers retaining Son.

Odd to celebrate a Rashford (c) blank. But I was honestly super happy to see him just play considering I had Lamptey first on my bench.

Oh well. Just my 2nd captaincy fail this season. It's not that bad.

Kane can score 4 in any match as well + he's on pens.

You can't own them all. If you tried to draft in everyone better value than those you own you'd go mad.

What if you used the transfer you'd have made to swap Kane for Werner to swap Salah for Bruno.

How would those points stack up ?

KDB or Fernandes more 'essential' moving forward?

    1. tafrère

Really hard to tell. KDB blanked today and Bruno scored, but it could have easily be the opposite. United & City not clicking atm. What if none of those two were essentials really ? I know it sounds crazy, but you can have a very strong team with Vardy/Kane, Salah & Son as your premiums.

      1. Bojam
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

Not crazy at all imo. Neither are 'essential' but if you want one I'd go form over fixtures. Bruno is delivering fairly consistent hauls, KDB isn't (yet). With you on Kane, Son & Salah.

I know 'essential' is a bit of a dirty word

      but

For me 3 players have to be in your squad when fit above any other:

      Salah
      KDB
      Bruno Fernandes

Maybe a 4th and add to Son to that list...

Villa are unpredictable. Probably to be expected though from a (likely) mid-table team. Grealish and Watkins remain good options given price and ability to haul. But need to ride the rough like this week with the smooth (e.g last GW). Dunno about the defence long-term but happy enough to stick with Martinez over this run of good fixtures.

    A) Jimenez -> DCL
    B) Jimenez- > Werner
    C) Jimenez, Bissouma -> Delap, KDB (-4), switch to 3-5-2

    1. Bojam
      • 6 Years

Not C for me. KDB hasn't done much yet to warrant this and you'd get lumped with a non-playing bench fodder in a season when actually having a bench is important.

I'd probably go A given Everton's fixtures in the short-term look sweet. See what they do tomorrow. B could also work - Werner is returning consistently though no major hauls yet (right?).

    Team now:

    Werner Jimi DCL

Could be like this or similair:

    Aguero Vardy Brewster

Absolutely not mate, your squad is spot on..

I'd get rid of Rashford & Jimenez for KDB and whatever striker you can afford. Maybe a cheapo to give you £ for Chilwell who for me is gonna be the only defender to rival TAA & Robertson (who will come good). Werner for Vardy maybe, I see he is in your WC plan

You can sort that already good squad with 2-3 transfers

Disclaimer - i used my WC in Week 2, and have done last 5-6 seasons, so pinch of salt and all that 🙂

One more thing: have a plan to quickly get Salah back in once he is back in the LFC team, and be brutal whether it is KBD, Bruno, Son or Vardy who gets the chop... because Salah will hit 200+ again without a doubt

If any other reason is needed look at Fabio Borges who basically doesn't just own Salah he pretty much just makes him captain every week with the odd switch, and reaps the benefit

Could Jimi Son Rashford > KDB Jota Vardy(c) -8 be better then wildcarding? Other options are Son/Rash Jimi > KDB Richarlison(for example) -4, or just Jimi > Vardy for free

Im short on Ras/Son > KDB for free

Kane is full of confidence, fully fit and clearly happy under Mourinho. Complete transformation from end of last season.

He made complete mugs of both Laporte and Dias today, both very good players.

I don't own him for one reason or another.. but that is a VERY dangerous game

Vardy looks so appealing though, Kane realistically is my only way of getting him. Big decision to make

Its not that bad, but I made the decision to keep kane and not son because son has poor records against those teams, and kane has great records. Unfortunate outcome for me today but bruno equalled sons points lost so ill take it on the chin and am happy going forward.

Any long term idea as to what to do with this team?

    Ryan, 4m
    Chilwell, Lamptey, Justin, Mitchell, Dunne
    Salah, KDB, Son, Jota, Podence
    DCL, Vardy, Bamford

    Thoughts will be largely appreciated

Would've loved Cancelo in the team for City's easy run of fixtures. But just can't see myself taking Chilwell out. Justin plays against Fulham (high clean sheet potential) next week. So probably after GW 10, with 2 FTs
        Podence+Justin --> Cancelo+4.3m/4.5m Mid

All my plans had been to take a hit do get KDB for son next week, it’s getting harder to do it, still feels like the right move... or just get salah back...

Sterling a viable KDB alternative..? Or important to find that extra 0.1?

Harry Kane is on 7 goals 9 assists
Son on 9 goals 2 assists

Yet both on the same points....despite 45% goal involvement by Kane

Shows the value of a mid over fwd ..

With Lamptey out I’m losing patience, so tempted to Dbl up Man City defense, just got in Cancelo (for Trent) this week, and tempted by Dias (I also own sterling).. Is it worth a hit over playing Brewster?? Surely over the next 4 it would be worth it?

is Kane to Vardy the more logical one?

What do you think about KDB for the next 3 games? I watched City today and KDB was quite active, had a few situations, could score. Someone told me to quit him because City is weak this season. Would you like KDB in your squad?

    Where would you go here?
    1. WC and be done with it.
    2. Jimenez-> Vardy.
    3. Kane -> Vardy.
    4. Bruno/ Son -> KDB.
May need to deal with Barkley too although I ll neep if not serious.

    McCarthy.
    Cancelo, Chilwell, Justin.
    Grealish, Fernandes, Son, Barkley.
    Jimenez, Kane, DCL.
    Button, Mitchell, Ayling, Bissouma.
1ft, 3.3m ITB. WC in hand.

How would you fit Kdb or Vardy in?

    Rashford - Bruno - Son - Podence - Bissuma
    Kane - DCL - Adams

2FTs and 5.0itb (0.5 off doing Podence to Kdb)

If it makes you feel any better they haven't been playing well all season, he hasn't been playing well most of the season, and if it takes a hit for you to get him then the probability he'll badly punish you is even lower.

Basically don't panic and work out your best move
