Top 10k FPL managers refuse to ditch Kane and Son double-up for Gameweek 9

The top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have largely kept faith with Tottenham Hotspur despite their recent fixture-swing.

And it looks as if they have already been vindicated in that decision.

65% of these managers held onto the attacking double-up of Harry Kane (£11.0m) and Son Heung-min (£9.5m) for a tricky meeting with Manchester City, each one of them registering an attacking return.

Specifically, 86.7% of this rank bracket took Kane into Gameweek 8, his ownership at that level shrinking only as low as 85.4% for Saturday’s visit of the Citizens to north London.

Counting his yellow card, Kane scored four points thanks to his assist for Giovani Lo Celso‘s (£6.9m) second-half finish, extending his run without a blank to eight matches.

And, despite the difficulty of this match on paper, 26.2% of the top 10k still trusted Kane with the captaincy. Only Bruno Fernandes (£10.7m), backed by 28.3%, convinced more managers in that bracket to captain him than the Spurs man.

That ensured Kane still wields significant power in the top 10k, offering effective ownership at that level of 111.4%, the most of any player.

With Fernandes, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.6m) and Hakim Ziyech (£8.2m) enticing Fantasy managers in midfield, it is unsurprising that Son Heung-min (£9.5m) suffered a higher loss of owners in the top 10k.

The South Korean boasted 87.1% ownership at this level for Gameweek 8, which dropped to 74.1% for Gameweek 9.

However, the majority of his backers kept faith in Son, despite the Manchester City fixture, as he remains the most popular midfielder in the top 10k.

These managers were richly rewarded at the first hurdle, as Son scored 10 points in Gameweek 9, finding the net, keeping a clean sheet and earning two bonus.

Courtesy of Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.3m) enforced absence, Fernandes bursts into the template for Gameweek 9, already selected by 48.9% of the top 10k.

He has already racked up significant sway at this level, considering that he was the most captained by top 10k managers for Gameweek 9. That made for effective ownership of 77.2%, the second-highest of any FPL player.

An 11-point score for Gameweek 9 means Fernandes has already made an impact on the upper echelons of the Fantasy rankings.

With Liverpool defenders falling even further by the wayside this season, it is no shock to see the majority of re-modelling in the top 10k came at the back for Gameweek 9.

Chilwell, Werner start for Chelsea as Wilson fails to make Newcastle squad

Ben Chilwell (£6.0m) remains the most-popular defender in the top 10k although his ownership at this level swelled considerably from 34.6% to 49.1%.

Romain Saïss (£5.2m) has left the top-five defenders among top 10k managers, replaced as the third-most-popular by Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.6m).

Meanwhile, even Kurt Zouma (£5.4m) has dropped out of the top five, Max Kilman (£4.3m) finally creeping in, sat in 23.9% of top 10k teams.

Sunday’s meeting between Fulham and Everton at Craven Cottage has boosted the Fantasy potential of Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.8m).

His top 10k ownership has increased by 8.4 percentage points over the international break while he arrived in Gameweek 9 as the third-most-popular captain option at this level (12.4%).

The number of managers in the top 10k who are yet to deploy a chip continues to get smaller.

After the Gameweek 9 deadline, just 28.6% of these have kept their entire complement intact, while 45% have now used at least one chip.

As you can see, the Wildcard was the most popular of those for Gameweek, used by 6.9% of the top 10k.

Interestingly, we see the continued commitment to Spurs players even here, with Kane kept by 59% of top 10k Wildcards and 41.7% of such managers retaining Son.

What kind of voodoo magic should I try out to get points from Burke and Mitchell? Around 10 points per player will be acceptable...

Calling all other Salah keepers and Grealish captainers. If there are any. Another dreadful week looming and this disaster of a season continues. I know it’s only gw9 but it already feels like the weeks are running out. I fear overthinking is doing me in once again.

Up until about GW5 I was over half way down my mini league, and just above me was a new guy to the game, who auto picked his team and had so far made no transfers....he still hasn't now, and thankfully I am above him and going in the right direction and he is closer to the bottom. But I did wonder what the hell I was doing wrong ;o(

Def not a Fulham fan Haha - DCL ownership is huge and besides Fernandes who I captained, all the the other top picks have failed to score - except DCL. Just because I have him doesn't mean it's better for my OR if he score. I thought it's kinda obvious

My original plan was Son/Jimi to KDB/Bamford but unsure now:

          Martinez
          Robbo, Zouma, Coufal
          Salah, Son, Bruno, Zaha, Grealish
          DCL, Jimi

          A) stick to plan - Son/DCL to KDB/Bam?
          B) Robbo/Jimi to Cancelo/Vardy?
          C) Bruno to KDB?

Captaincy strategy for the next few weeks.

          GW 10 : KDB
          GW 11 : Sterling
          GW 12 : Salah
          GW 13 : KDB/Sterling

Benching Foden is the real crime, we look much better with him on the pitch. Incredible how Bernardo and Mahrez are starting instead of him.

I still have Foden having read that City fans value him and want him starting. Also returns decently when given minutes. Surely after last nights showing, he'll start vs Burnley, what do you think?

Sorry, I have no idea mate. If he gets benched midweek then I would be more optimistic about him starting but it's a tricky situation. Pep sees Foden as a winger and that spot has Sterling/Mahrez/Torres all competing. The fact that Sterling got benched and Foden STILL didn't start is very worrying.

A lot of people seemingly falling into the “grass is always greener” trap this morning.

Harry Kane has returned in his last eight fixtures. Him and Son are the top two scorers in the game. Yet people are looking to ship them out, (sometimes for a hit!) for Vardy (who I understand then wanting) and city players who have looked average at best this season.

There’s a reason that these two have a combined ownership of about 2/3 of the top 10k

Yeah too many trying to be ahead of the curve, I'll jump on City when they show form. I'm sure it's coming and those fixtures are good but in this case I don't mind being a week late, happy with just KDB and still owning Son and Kane for now

They may be in red hot form, but their ceiling is still very low for the next 6 weeks. Who’s to say their form doesn’t start dropping off? Plenty of upside elsewhere imo

I’ll admit that I got lucky. If is wasn’t for salah getting the rona, I was set on Son to Sterling/KDB. Now I’ll be continuing to monitor city and wait until they look like scoring a hatful (might bring in Foden or Torres as a fifth mid)

Because the people who owned him got returns in the first 8 fixtures... This early in the season, owning top scorers = top10k. Let’s see how things shake out over another 8 before we start crowning player of the year or drawing conclusions from top 10k selection.

I’m not suggesting they’re players of the year. But to give away four points to bring in any of the city team who played yesterday, or even against Sheff Utd, strikes me as chasing rather than making a sensible choice.

Vardy is different, he’s someone I’d like in my side. But I 100% wouldn’t remove Kane to get him

City is historically far better, kdb and sterling have been outscoring Kane and son for a long time and fixtures took a swing for both. It’s not like you can’t see the logic behind it.

I definitely see the thinking, but it’s not logical. City have looked pretty average, even against poor sides. But it’s a hopeful move rather than one based on stats.

I was guilty of the opposite in 2015, figuring Vardy and Mahrez were flashes in the pan. It took me months to get them in

They will probably (but based on what I’ve seen by no means certainly) get top four. That will be helped by their squad size and their ability to rotate far better than other sides as the fixtures pile up.

Winning games doesn’t equate to bagging loads of fantasy points. Sterling has two goals and an assist; KDB a goal and three assists (and a missed pen). City just don’t currently look like battering a team, so it’s hope rather than expectation that they do. It doesn’t mean it won’t happen, but it’s illogical to say it definitely will

I'm very interested in seeing how Chelsea (A) goes. Now a strong defense with Silva and Mendy and Lampard's 2-0 up on Jose so far but their offensive style of play opens them up to the counter. Lamps may try to avoid Pep's mistake and play 3ATB, sitting back to frustrate.

attacking the fixtures with the intention of getting Son and/or Kane when the fixtures turn back for them ... which ever way you cut this cake the odds are in your favour over the season getting your premium attackers lined up against WBA, Fulham, Leeds etc. rather than City & Chelsea

The game is changing and the old strategy of keeping players that are considered ‘essential’ and refusing to take hits, well it’s just not working anymore; it’s no coincidence that the famous FPL players are struggling more and more in recent years and that top 10k spot is a distant memory for most 😉

How is this an “old” strategy? Chasing fixtures is equally “old”, surely?

I’m not saying that Sterling definitely won’t haul in the next few weeks. But I struggle to see an argument for taking a hit to have a guy who looks cold replace one who currently needs only a single chance. Now if I was looking to replace Rashford or similar then it might be a different story

it’s what I hear all the time, you can’t sell Salah / Kane / KDB because they are season keepers, it will take two transfers to get them back blah blah blah ... in the meantime people are benching Salah and getting 1 point off their bench instead of selling him for Bruno or James Rod against WBA & Fulham this week - it’s old school take your time stuff

If Salah is playing Brighton & Son playing Chelsea then I will seriously consider selling Son to get Salah, rather than ‘old school’ holding Son (you can consider any similar players in that scenario) 🙂

There’s a difference between shipping a player because he’s injured/got the lurgey and because he’s playing a slightly better team. I got rid of Salah for Bruno the second his second COVID test came back positive. I can always get him back, but a nailed on 0 points isn’t happening for £12m!

However, I do see him as something of a season keeper and fixture proof. Once he’s fit, I’ll have him back. If City start to look like battering teams again, then I’ll look to get on that bus. But for now I’m happy with my fairly consistent returns from the spurs duo

same as me, but I won’t rush him back with KDB playing Burnley & Fulham, Everton (James) playing Burnley & Leeds, Palace (Zaha) playing Newcastle & WBA, Vardy v SU & Fulham ... he is more likely to come back in for Bruno 🙂

For me a key reason it gets harder to consistently achieve top 10k is sites like this and the information it provides to the masses.

Anyhow, I still adopt my “old” strategy and will stick with it!

If picking players who are scoring points is “old”, then I don’t want to be “new”

the game is about trying to get the most points each week and that does not necessarily mean holding or buying players that scored points the week before, no matter who they are .... imho 🙂

            McCarthy
            Chillwell, Justin, Coady
            Bruno, Son, Grealish, Salah Soucek
            DCL, Jimenez

            Forster, Ayling, Brewster, TAA

            0.0m ITB, 1 free transfer

            Worth a -4 ?
            TAA, Jimenez > Cancelo, Vardy

            Thanks

I'm not surprised that so many of the top 10k kept the Kane/Son double up given that most of them would have had more urgent issues like Salah and TAA to deal with. Kane just 2% off the most popular captaincy option against City does surprise me, however.

yip, was set to sell Son (had 3 Spurs) for Bruno but Salah (luckily) forced my transfer hand but with James Rod, Bruno & DCL etc it meant Kane was never a captain option for me.

Funny how Kane’s heat map is darkest in his own defensive half v City

he is transforming into an attacking midfielder, looking how many assists he's getting.

Prior to this GW Tariq Lamptey was number 1 threat on the ICT index, however, despite a great first half in particular he has now dropped to second. Who has usurped him? I can’t for the life of me figure it out

Hey guys. Was overwhelmed by the amount of support last stream for the first FPL Live! on Friday. Thank you so much. The first FPL Reacts! stream is happening in 12 hours time, feel free to drop by and see what all the fuss was about. Those that did had a right laugh and we ended up going for 7 hours:

            https://www.twitch.tv/spearmintspaff

We got to 50 viewers at one point last week and I’m humbled. Thanks again and maybe see a few of you in today’s stream. I also want to say thank you to my friend Yung who posted without me knowing about the stream.

Those of you that are sceptical I am happy to give you a little background on myself and FPL:
Top finishes – 18th FPL, 25th Sky, 2nd Mirror, 71st Daily Mail and 1st UFPL Monthly (for proof go check out the media section on my Twitter @SpearmintSpaff though I would prefer you to come join us live!).

TL:DR – I play too much FPL, come check me out on Twitch as we react to GWK 9 live in 12 hours time.

            Peace out, DZ!
