Analysing Fernandes and United’s other FPL assets after narrow West Brom win

Manchester United 1-0 West Bromwich Albion

  • Goals: Bruno Fernandes (£10.7m)
  • Assists: Juan Mata (£5.9m)
  • Bonus: Fernandes x3, Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m) x2, Victor Lindelof (£4.9m) x1

A twice-taken Bruno Fernandes (£10.7m) penalty was just enough for Manchester United to see off a spirited, if limited, West Brom side.

It was the Red Devils’ first league win at Old Trafford this season, prompting a relief-heavy comment from manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer:

We needed that win at home. It’s never comfortable against players of this quality.

FERNANDES TO THE FORE

Over-hyping the opposition continues to be a Solskjaer trait because the Baggies were organised and committed, but that was generally where their qualities ended.

Then again, there wasn’t much of the good stuff on display from the home side either, with midfielder Fernandes the best of an average lot on the night.

That was the most pleasing Fantasy Premier League (FPL) aspect of the match as the 34.5%-owned midfielder was by far the most popular player on the pitch.

His ownership had been boosted by a Gameweek-leading one million-plus new owners for the West Brom encounter and yet another penalty – seven of his 14 goals for the club have come from the spot – meant he produced a second straight double-digit return for his managers old and new.

He did require a re-take to score it, however, when his first attempt was saved by the excellent Sam Johnstone (£4.5m), albeit from well off his goal-line.

But the goal was just reward for an influential performance from Fernandes.

He created two of the game’s three big chances, which forced fine saves by Johnstone from Anthony Martial (£8.7m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) respectively, and scored from the other one.

Fernandes’ form, and United’s fixtures, are tempting more managers into the midfielder’s fold – he’s currently one of the most popular purchases for Gameweek 10.

And a pleasant mix of matches over the next six Gameweeks, with four games away and the two at home against more progressive opposition in Manchester City and Leeds, should better suit United’s counter-attacking strengths.

NOT SO FORWARD THINKING

Penalties have nourished Fernandes owners through thin times. There’s not a lot of sustenance available for the team’s other attacking options.

On another day and against a rather less inspired keeper, both Martial and Rashford might have found the net.

But the former has had a truly terrible season so far, with more red cards than goals, while Rashford’s last four starts – which have included three stints up front – have produced just one assist.

Solskjaer has handed four starts out of the last five to Juan Mata (£5.9m) and it was the veteran’s cross that drew the handball for Saturday’s penalty award.

The Spaniard now has two assists from those starts, but his lack of pace does the side few favours and his freer role seems to compromise Fernandes’ ability to get forward at times.

Many United fans would rather see the more dynamic Donny van de Beek (£6.7m) given a chance in Mata’s place, a move that the conservative Solskjaer is yet to make, and might not even have contemplated.

The manager did provide an update on another midfielder – Paul Pogba (£7.7m):

Paul got a knock in the last game (for France) and he started feeling it yesterday after the session. Well, he felt it before the session, but he couldn’t carry on. Hopefully, he’ll be okay for Tuesday.

But the only attacking game in town at the moment remains Fernandes. United have had 109 attempts so far this season and just over a fifth (24) have come solely from him.

DEFENSIVE DIVIDENDS

At least the team’s backline is starting to produce points, with two clean sheets (and just two goals conceded) over the last four Gameweeks.

The side’s most popular defender, Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.4m and 9.2%), brought in two bonus points, and eight overall, while Alex Telles (£5.5m) marked his league debut with a solid return for his 1.2% ownership.

United’s schedule is attractive enough to suggest more clean sheets can be kept for the foreseeable future.

But the prospect of attacking returns from the flanks remains remote.

United’s full-backs – including the injured Luke Shaw (£4.8m) – have created nine chances between them this season.

That’s a total bettered by six defenders on their own, while West Ham’s Ryan Fredericks (£4.3m) can match that tally from just three appearances.

Until Solskjaer risks pushing his wide men further forward, Harry Maguire (£5.4m) is probably the better bet as a consistent attacking threat.

The centre-half’s 13 attempts this season is joint-top among defenders.

As for the Baggies, manager Slaven Bilic was understandably bitter about VAR overturning a penalty award when Fernandes tackled Conor Gallagher (£5.5m):

I’m very disappointed with the result and the decisions from the referee.

But from a Fantasy perspective, the less said about a team with just six goals and one clean sheet from nine games, the better.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Telles; Matic, Fred (McTominay 84); Mata (Cavani 62), Fernandes, Rashford (van de Beek 79); Martial.

West Bromwich Albion XI (5-4-1): Johnstone; Furlong, Bartley, Ivanovic (Krovinovic 79), Ajayi, Townsend; Gallagher, Sawyers, Diangana (Robson-Kanu 62), Pereira; Grant (Robinson 62).

    Martinez
    Coufal Trent Van Aanholt
    Salah Son Sterling Zaha
Kane Wilson Brewster(give a chance vs WB)

    Bissouma LampteyX Branthwaite

    So I’m looking at a -8

    Trent/Kane/Wilson to Calvert-Lewin/Vardy(C)/Cancelo

Could backfire of course but on the face of it you would expect to make up those 8 points in next 2 GWs at most and DCL is essential.

I need Calvert-Lewin, luckily bought on Free hit and Captained this week, I can see a big Vardy score, and Kane although very good is playing more in the hole than our and out striker..

is there some upside in moving on bruno to sterling to attack those two nice home games? (Then move Sterling to Salah afterwards)

Feels dumb but I like the idea of triple city to try and get some big greens (already own KDB and Dias)

With Sterling, the eye test is a good way to judge when he is about to explode. I haven’t seen the spark in him yet but if I owned him I certainly wouldn’t be selling him.

Thoughts would be appreciated on what to do here:

    Martinez (Forster)
Ayling - Robbo - Chilwell (Lamptey) (Mitchell)
Son - Salah - Bruno - Hamez (Burke)
    Bamford - Watkins - DCL

    £2.6 m ITB. 1FT

I was originally targeting Son -> KDB, or even Robbo -> Cancelo and Hamez -> KDB for a -4 this week, but now reluctant to transfer out Son and Robbo for a City attack that looks like it is in sustained decline.

Now I'm thinking of using my FT to do Mitchell -> Cancelo this week, which would give me arguably the three best defensive assets in the game (with Robbo and Chilwell). It also allows me to significantly upgrade a bench option, and I'll still have enough money ITB to either move Hamez for Ziyech the following week, or even Bruno to KDB if I see enough signs that City's attack is beginning to click.

Cancelo is obviously a great option for two GWs but I think your Team will be quite unbalanced then. I would consider Robertson & Hamez out for Cancelo & KDB. A lot of people are going to be taking some risks with transfers this week I should think. I'm holding onto Son regardless.

      1. Tinfoil Deathstar
        • 3 Years

Thanks. Unbalanced in what sense? Too much money in defence? Tbh I think there are signs that teams are beginning to tighten up defensively and Cancelo should also allow me an entry into City attacking returns without fully committing at this stage.

        1. Catastrophe
          • 13 Years
          3 years, 4 months ago

Yeah, you would have a lot tied up in defence whereas a lot are going for cheaper options to load up in Midfield. Fair points though in that Cancelo gets forward well as of course does Robertson.

            • 3 Years

Sure. I could still have a midfield of Ziyech - Son - Salah - Fernandes for GW11 though after bringing in Cancelo for Mitchell this week, which I think is pretty tasty and gives me enough options for captaincy outside Citeh. Ziyech looks like Chelsea's KDB equivalent to me and at £3m cheaper.

Its waaaay to early to be comparing Ziyech with KDB!

A fully firing KDB is involved in everything Man City do - Ziyech is a winger and does not have the same involvement

I disagree with Catasrophe in that i think owning three (or even four) 5million + defenders is a good move, there's loads of points to be reaped in this bracket

Of course KDB & Sterling are the best options but do you reckon so 5M price difference can be justified compared to Foden?

Foden is obviously high risk / high reward but the way I see it, it's a bit unlikely Sterling and KDB hauls withouth Foden having a bite at it. If the games are won for City, Foden might be brought in to manage first teamers gametime and we know what Foden can do in 20 minutes when City are free scoring.

I even think Foden might be part of the starting line up for the coming games as City will have to face deep lying defense and since the departur of Dilva, City have struggled to unlock them. Foden could bring this to City.

It does not matter. You're not looking for past points. You're looking for future ones. He has 3 goals in 3 games in CL. He scored a hat-trick vs Germany. He's started all of the last 3.

fait point but I don't think Torres is more nailed than Foden to be honest. He played against tottenham because sterling was injured but once sterling is back and Jesus/aguero playing in 9, I think he's not nailed any more

I do. That might be the difference. I think Torres starts most of the next few games. He's versatile and can play RW and LW too, even at CF.

I sold Foden this week because he's no longer in favor. 4 games in a row without a PL start is not good. There's a difference between rotation risk and out of favor.

He scored two against BUR last season for a 16 pointer.
City's fan are pushing hard for him to start and don't understand why Pep isn't.

Plus, he's an easy swap to Jota/Barkley/bowen/trossard/van de beek etc. I think it's great to have an aggressive rotating slot at +- 6.5M in our team this season. You'll have plenty of player popping up at some point with a crazy 3 or 4 GW runs

I think it’s clutching at straws just because he once haul’d again burnley

It’s not an aggressive slot when he comes on for a 1 pointer, you have nailed 90 min players like zaha and greilish for less than a million more

You have a similar team to mine (posted above) and same starting midfield. I was planning on getting in KDB this week but I think I'm going to pass until I see more evidence of them clicking. Interesting article in The Athletic this week suggesting City are in sustained decline, particularly in ball recoveries and that attack has become blunted without Aguero. Tbh I'm far more tempted to upgrade Hamez to Ziyech next week, at this stage. At more than 3m cheaper than KDB it looks like he could post similar returns.

Thanks pal, interesting point about City - the eye test backs that, can easily see them winning the next few by small margins. Hamez does have to go, agreed, good shout on Ziyech as you don't have Werner. They're scoring for fun and worth the investment - fixtures aren't even as bad as everyone's making out.

No worries. To be honest, I think you have more than enough captaincy options in Salah, Bruno and Werner, to compensate for the fear of not owning Citeh. Too many good options this year to regard them as being essential, despite their fixture run.

Trying to figure out which premium assets should I keep or get.

Starting with a questions: Which one from Son and Kane would you keep?
Also, keeping Kane would mean no Vardy - prime (c) option for the next GW, followed by Sheffield and Brighton games.

Martial awful. He should be dropped for Cavani to be honest. In the 20mins Cavani played he must have run as much as Martial did all game. Showing him how a top class CF should play, making runs, dragging defenders out, being aggressive and non-static. Martial actually looked improved put on the left so I wonder if this is something that may happen more often now..

Friendly neighborhood spiderman sort of post:

If any of you have been considering Vardy, but have been put-off by the non-penalty xg, try the following comparisons:
    1. Non-Penalty xG for Vardy 2019 vs 2020. Now look at the points tally in 2019
    2. xG and just plain old G vs relegation fodder and vs the rest in 2019

    You're welcome 🙂

What to do here? 1ft and 0.6 itb. In hindsight I propably should not have done Salah -> Stelring last week... Hoping it can pay off in the next 2 gameweeks.

    A. Grealish

    A) Ziyech, 4.6D & 4.6D
    B) Grealish, Zouma & 4.6D
    C) Jota, Zouma & Cancelo

    Rest of Team:

    Martinez
    Chilwell, X, X
    Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Son, X
    DCL, Bamford

    (Steer, Kilman, Brewster, Mitchell)

Thinking A with Coufal & KWP. Not sure I fancy Jota with weak bench and much prefer Ziyech to Grealish.

The other one will go for Salah for the Fulham game, so basically who will score more in the next few fixtures?

      Rashford

Zaha, Werner, Son - all left sided forwards - have already exploited Southampton's high line.

I have the same dilemma as majority of people on here .... needing to make some big decisions on the premium assets... I need to pick 1 from Group A and 2 from Group B below.... have added my brief assessment

    GROUP A:
Kane (che, ARS, cry, liv) - Has been in amazing form but clearly fixtures are not great and he is playing a lot deeper (more assists/ assisting the assister rather than goals?)
Vardy (FUL, shu, BHA, EVE) - Consistently good form - high xG but less overall xGI. Fixtures v good

    GROUP B:
Salah (bha, WOL, ful, TOT) - Will (hopefully) be just back in time - questions over peak fitness. Decent fixtures. Blistering form pre-Covid
KDB (BUR, FUL, mun, WBA) - Consistently good chance creation combined with excellent fixtures - unavoidable? We know the potential
Son (che, ARS, cry, liv) - Good form and positioning, seems relatively fixture proof although fixtures are bad - up against the better defences
Bruno (sou, whu, MCI, shu) - Consistently grinding out points and the next 3 away matches (usually good for Bruno) are easier fixtures. Still needs pens.....

    My front 8 is currently:

    Bruno, Son, Ziyech, Grealish (Stephens)
    Kane, DCL, Bamford

With only 1FT, I don't fancy taking hits for these kinds of premium switch decisions so need to be careful! Initial thoughts are to hold off from Salah this week and either do Kane > Vardy or Bruno > KDB

    Thoughts?
    Cheers

Priority is City for me. I don't look back. It's all about the points potential coming up. City had 22 goal attempts vs Spurs (who have the best defense in the league). They will score and they play 3 of the worst teams in the next 4 at home.

I agree with you. I think KDB is silly to ignore. However I also think Vardy may be a better pick at the moment than Kane.

I just got Bruno in but he is the easiest way into KDB .... makes me feel a bit silly doing that move though!
