Zaha self-isolating as Eze and Taylor shrug off yellow flags for Burnley v Palace

Wilfried Zaha (£7.4m) has been omitted from Crystal Palace’s matchday sqaud as they travel to face Burnley in Gameweek 9.

Roy Hodgson revealed on Monday afternoon that the midfielder is self-isolating, although it was not yet confirmed that he was doing so because of his own positive coronavirus (COVID-19) test, or because of someone he was in contact with.

Michy Batshuayi (£5.8m) comes in for Zaha, starting up-front alongside Jordan Ayew (£5.7m) in a 4-4-2 formation.

There is slightly more encouraging news for Palace fans as Eberechi Eze (£5.8m) has overcome his muscle injury to start on the left-hand side of midfield.

Patrick van Aanholt (£5.4m), who has the best minutes per shot of any Palace player since Gameweek 3, is at left-back once again, this time rooting Tyrick Mitchell (£4.1m) to the bench, who finally returns from his knock.

Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) has shrugged off his yellow flag to start at Turf Moor, the Burnley defender behind only Nick Pope (£5.4m) for points per million spent among his colleagues this season.

Jay Rodriguez (£5.8m) starts alongside Chris Wood (£6.2m) up-front for Sean Dyche’s men, relegating Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) to the bench.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; C Taylor, Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; McNeil, Brownhill, Westwood, Gudmundsson; Rodriguez, Wood.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; van Aanholt, Dann, Kouyate, Clyne; Eze, Riedewald, McArthur, Townsend; Ayew, Batshuayi.

    Martinez
    Robbo - Chilwell - Coufal
    Bruno (C) - Son - Grealish - Zaha
    Kane - DCL - Bamford
    (Forster) - (Dallas - Bissouma - Mitchell)
    4.0 ITB - 1 FT

    A) Zaha -> Jota
    B) Zaha + Robbo -> Salah + Cancelo (-4)
    C) Zaha + Robbo -> Salah + Bellerin/Fofana (saves £ for Bruno -> KDB later)

Yeah Rudiger could get some games 😀

But in truth, I think Reece James is fairly nailed. He will only miss odd games. I don't even think he's less nailed than Chilwell. Chilwell occasionally gets little injuries and needs rest. James is a truck and playing really well.

Zouma has won most aerial duels in whole Europe (top leagues). I think he has goals and bonus in him. James has a higher competition for the festive period and Lampard on the other hand stated that he will manage Silva minutes

Jota has started 4 PL games, including one where Mane had COVID and one where Salah had COVID. Firmino has never been benched.

In the 2 games where all 4 played (Sheff Utd + Man City), Liverpool played 4-2-3-1 with:

    Jota --- Firmino --- Mane
    ----------- Salah -------------

Do Liverpool fans think you switch to that formation going forwards?

No, I think all 3 are going to come into a good run both attacking and defensively so justifies itself. If you are going to downgrade, Cancelo is prone to Pep roulette.

    Martinez - Forster
    Robbo - Zouma - Targett - Kilman - Lamptey
    Son - Bruno - Jrod - Barkley - Soucek
    Kane - DCL - Adams

1FT, 3.3ITB - hadn't really considered Vardy before but have just seen Leicester's upcoming fixtures! Will probably deal with defence next week.

Its getting very clear now that rather swapping out players for a week or 2, we need a very strong bench as well as a strong 11.
Gone are the days of a premium 11. It needs to be a very good 15.

      Disagree.

I have never had my 3rd bench (4.3m forward) needed. Not once. You transfer out players who are injury risks and have a spare 4.5m defender in case of the odd injury/benching.

    5. Salarrivederci
      • 7 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

      Disagree.
You don't need a 'very strong bench' or 'very good 15' 🙂

You just need your cheap bench players to return 1-2 points if one of your players misses out.
As an example I think Brewster is the perfect 8'th attacking player this season.
Should have played better to nail down a starting spot, but will likely start most matches. Even if he does'nt start he will get subbed in around 70'.

Not really interested in a cheap midfielder since the welth of good options is amazing this year:

In defense you just need something like: Kilman and/or Lewis and/or Lamptey and your bench is amazing.

In goal you either need the backup keeper or 2 cheap 4.5's in case of Covid-19 strikes.

In total no more than 18.5 on your bench is needed.

      1. TheTruth
        • 4 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

Good points. But brewster is not worth the 4.5 mill in my opnion. Lampty is good value. I’d rather have a 3 forwards that will give me points and pay the extra....even if i rotate him depending on injuries and fixtures.
Example: Watkins Wilson DCL is better and cheaper then Kane ings Brewster. Especially if I can use the extra funds to invest in a good 4th and 5th midfielder or defender.
It all depends how you look at it. But I understand ur view. Its how I played the game before. But now its all changed with the rotation and injury issues.

        1. Salarrivederci
          • 7 Years
          3 years, 4 months ago

          Well you either need a 4.5 attacker or 4.5 midfielder to bench? can't play 2-5-3 😉 !
And I think the midfielders are simply more exiting to own compared to the forwards 😉

That is why I think Brewster is the best 4.5 bench player week in and week out.

The cheapest way is to go 4.0, 4.0, 4.0 and 4.5, but I think you can throw in 1.0 more in your bench this season

Over one gameweek, maybe, but over many GWs those 4pts will be paid back with interest. The player has up until the next WC to pay it back.

If you have transfer congestion coming up with lots of key moves you want to make, I wouldn't be against doing some housekeeping at the back for a hit, it should have long term benefits imo.

Transfer congestion is a massive point.

If you know you're wanting to make those moves, because they'll gain you points in the medium-term (or even short-term)... make them.

          Dragging your heels otherwise.
