Fernandes’ fine FPL form mirrored in recent Football Index dividend returns

Sponsored by Football Index

Less is rarely more at Christmas time, and it’s certainly not going to be that way with this year’s festive football schedule.

Tapping into the busiest of players over that time frame will be key across all Fantasy games, with Football Index no exception.

Football Index (FI) is a kind of stock market where people use real money to bet on football.

You buy shares in individual players whose value can rise or fall depending on their performance both on and off the field.

I’m actively using FI this season with more than a nod to Fantasy Premier League (FPL), seeing which aspects of each game marry up, and which don’t.

And the one that’s marrying up more times than Henry VIII at present is the continued supremacy of Bruno Fernandes (£8.64).

Above: Media Dividends winners over the last five days

The Manchester United midfielder has taken Fantasy Premier League (FPL) by storm since arriving from Portugal last winter.

He managed eight league goals and as many assists from his first half a season and hasn’t let up this campaign. He already has six goals and three assists and only four players in FPL have more points.

And since mentioning him in last week’s article, his price in FI has shot up by £2.

Above: Fernandes has been in the running for Match-Day Dividends in each of his last three games

Dividends are driving Fernandes’ popularity. He’s led the way in the Media Dividend standings twice in three days this week and backed that up with a Match-Day Dividend based on Saturday’s win over West Brom.

When you factor in players also earning traders In-Play Dividends for the first 30 days after the share purchase, then it’s no surprise many are now bumping up his price by surfing the Fernandes wave.

And seeing as he’s some way off his FI peak price of £11.34 in July this year, there’s evidence to suggest he still has much to give.

Man United have no fewer than 11 fixtures to play between now until January 2, 2021, ten of which – the Premier League and Champions League games – are eligible for In-Play and Match-Day Dividends.

Fernandes may not feature in all of those games, but he’s clearly the key man for United and will start most.

A win at home to Paris Saint Germain would secure a place in the Champions League knockout stages, freeing up one final group stage fixture for major squad rotation by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Fernandes has appeared in one of the team’s two League Cup fixtures, but being rested for the quarter-final tie against Everton would also make sense ahead of three games in eight days across Christmas and the new year.

One interesting twist emerged from this week’s win in Europe over Istanbul Basaksehir.

Solskjaer has been sparing, to put it mildly, in his use of new signing Donny van de Beek (£1.83) this season.

But he started both the former Ajax man and Fernandes in midfield against the Turkish team and they worked very well together, with de Beek impressing in a deeper role.

If the manager continues with that line-up, de Beek looks under-priced, particularly as he is also the obvious player to fill the Fernandes role when the Portugal international is rested.

These selection conundrums will, of course, be played out across the Premier League and especially regarding teams with European commitments. But those extra fixtures also to offer the potential for even more FI returns.

With that in mind, Liverpool’s Diogo Jota (£2.68) could be worth monitoring.

He’s only started four league games this season, but crucially that includes three of the last four, and he’s still managed four goals from 392 Premier League minutes – Sadio Mane (£2.02) has the same returns from 707 minutes.

Jota also has four goals from three Champions League appearances and his value, which has risen nearly £1 in less than a week, should continue on that upward trend with the Reds’ domestic schedule looking so enticing:

Vardy is averaging 2.66 pts a game at home. Overpriced imo.
Son and Kane up against a suspect Chelsea defense.
      Mahrez surely starting.
Transferring Jimenez and/or Ziyech seems like a good idea.

-12 is hard to repay. Not sure I'd want to lose both Spurs assets right now; I'm not certain I want to lose either. Can you afford just Ziyech->KDB? Or do that and downgrade Jimi maybe - depending on your bench - ready to get Salah later. If you're sure Vardy outscores Kane, then just Kane->Vardy (C) is a start.

A lot of sideways moves in that. Jimi and Mahrez could probably go, but impossible to tell without seeing the full team and money in the bank.

      Is it regulated by FCA/FSCS?

Doesn't really make sense as the performance of a player is basically all speculative... a player might be going through a personal issue that nobody knows about which decreases his performances.

Probably not the most liquid assets neither.

      1. Alberto Tomba
        • 11 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

I believe not, it says on the website "regulated by the Jersey Gambling Commission and by the UK Gambling Commission" so it's regulated as a gambling website, even though it holds itself as selling retail investment products. It should be regulated, and will end up in tears.

        1. Bruce Lee
          • 5 Years

I know a few that use it because they think they can predict who will do well... which is mental to me. It should be seen as a gambling website as you say. Shame they have packaged it as an investment vehicle.

Never been interested, best stick with the traditional stocks.

With traditional stocks etc they are high risk but at least you are actually buying something, however Football Index is a fabricated unit of a player that doesn't actually exist. Even Bitcoin etc at least actually exist. Here there's no regulator of how the prices are changed, so essentially the Index can change prices to make money as works for them.

Football Index is basically spread betting. Your investment goes down you lose, your investment goes up Football Index has to pay.
Potentially the company can go bust if more people make a profit than a loss.
Speadbetting companies pay out on small wins but play tricks to not pay out on the big bets.
Its the same as a casino, you are betting against the house, and in gambling the house tends not to lose.

Just for the record - and not saying anyone should get involved or not - but the key difference here is dividends. The value of your hold can go up or down, but if you buy players that earn you regular dividends you can very easily pay off the entire value of your hold and then still have the hold to sell on.

There is a lot of negativity around FI at the moment due to recent changes to the platform, but fundamentally it's a fun concept with a lot of growth still to come - and that growth should (in principle) also lift player prices.

Just my opinion and of course do your own research etc - it operates like a stock market but is absolutely a gambling site so should be treated as such.

        1. Alberto Tomba
          • 11 Years
          3 years, 4 months ago

It's not really even on a par with most betting though, because these 'dividends' or movements in price, aren't attributable to a real life event; a flip of a coin, landing on black or red, greater than 2.5 goals. The figures are made up by the FI. so of course they will set it to take your money over time.

Where you say growth in the platform, that is simply an increase of people investing in a made up asset - which is exactly what a ponzi scheme is.

Sorry if this is a bit negative, I'm an investment professional that doesn't like the potential for people to be misled.

The dividends are determined by real life events. The price movement delta has been worked out at around 900 shares - and there is a commitment to implement more user-facing transparency on this (as they have been bringing in in other areas).

I appreciate it's a bookmakers but not in the traditional sense. They make their money by taking a cut of trades, not by 'manipulating figures to take your money over time'.

Who do you think will find form and step up to score big this GW, and why?

Maybe someone who hasn't had a double digit score in a while, has a series of no attacking returns, or has very low ownership.

Have you seen something in someone's play or in their stats to make you think they could be ready for a breakout GW?

Rashford if he lines up on the left for United vs Saints. Southampton have given up a lot of chances down KWP's right hand side and similar pacey left sided forwards such as Zaha, Werner, Son have all done well against their backline. However, after the midweek performance Cavani may start up front meaning Martial is on the left and then Rashford is on the right.

I guess Bamford doesn't count as a differential but I do think he'll do well this week

I hope he stays quiet for another two weeks, until I get him in GW12

      Sterling

Looked bright against Olympiacos and up against a Pope-less Burnley and playing directly against Lowton

Literally can't win. Keep and he won't start, sell and he hauls.

If like me, you've kept since week 3, gotta give him these 2 games surely? Binning him off GW12 regardless.

The forgotten man, Kyle Walker, to be the GW's top performer with a goal, assist & CS 🙂

    Best captain pick?

    A. Mane (against a weak and Lampteyless Brighton right flank)

    B. KDB (against a Popeless deplorable Burnley side)

They rested a whole load of players in the CL, Mane wasn't one of them, and now they can't afford to rest in the following CL tie because they lost. He could get a rest in the PL.

He had his rest during his quarantine period. He will be fine I don’t think Pool can afford to rest or the league will slip out of their hands

No, I think he will play too, but there is definitely a seed of doubt.

    A. Zaha to Jota, Maupay to Bamford, captain Bruno

    B. Zaha to Jota, Kane to Vardy(c)

    C. Zaha to Salah(c), Kane to Bamford

      Another way to see it:
      A. Jota + Bamford + Kane
      B. Jota + Maupay + Vardy
      C. Salah + Maupay + Bamford

So tempted to do Kane to vardy. However, I was planning to captain Bruno.
Has to be vardy captain right?!

Do you really prefer Vardy at home vs. Kane in a London derby?

Wouldn't say KDB has been terrible had chances, had a good amount of expected assists, a haul is just round the corner

What improvements can I make with 1 FT and 1.1m?

    McCarthy
    Chilwell, Justin, Killman (Dallas, Taylor)
    Bruno, KDB, Son, Jota (Reed)
    Kane, DCL, Adams
